  • Dishonored Launch Trailer Highlights Outstanding Reviews

Dishonored, the dystopian, steampunkish magical-assassin game was released today, and already comparisons to the Thief and Deus Ex series’, as well as “game of the year” talk are being thrown around earnest.

To accompany the game’s launch, Bethesda has released one final trailer for the game, highlighting quotes from some of the outstanding reviews the game has been getting. It also shows many of the powers players can acquire during their playthrough and just how those powers can unleash destruction on unsuspecting guards and enemies.

What the trailer doesn’t show very well is that the game itself is very much stealth-based. Sure, players can rampage through the game, sliding their dagger into necks and calling on swarms of rats to devour guards, but the levels are designed for a more subtle, exploratory approach. For a look at how each of these styles of play will differ, check out the interactive trailer released by Bethesda last week, or the E3 walkthroughs that highlight both play styles.

  • New Hitman: Absolution Trailer is Full of Death

Another week is here, and another Hitman: Absolution trailer is here. Fresh off their trailer series featuring the bad guys of the game, Square Enix today released the first in a series of trailers that will show off the options will have while playing as Agent 47.

Today’s trailer, seen below is called “Kill Mode” and demonstrates the wide variety of ways players will be able to assassinate their targets. Players can be as subtle as poisoning or as bombastic as a John Woo-style shootout.

From the look of things, the kills in Absolution are more about style than anything else. This fits well with the type of game IO Interactive has said it is going for, which is based on 70s-era grindhouse and exploitation movies.

  • New Terraria Trailer Teases Extra Content For Consoles

If there is anything games such as Minecraft or platforms such as Xbox LIVE Arcade and Steam have taught us, it’s that gamers don’t necessarily need amazing graphics to enjoy a game. Provide an engaging or fun gameplay experience and gamers will overlook plenty of shortcomings, including graphics. New services such as Steam Greenlight have even put indie games front-and-center, rather than dismissing them as a niche product.

Today 505 Games, the publisher of the indie success Terraria, released a preview trailer for the console version of their game. It, of course, looks the same as the PC version of the game, but the trailer does tease that extra content will be coming for console gamers.

Terraria is, as 505 Games describes it, a “block-building” action-adventure sandbox game. Players take on the side-scrolling adventure to explore huge game worlds, collect materials and loot, and craft things. The high-concept for Terraria is “2-D Minecraft,” but the game has differentiated itself in both style and substance from the Mojang game.

“The block-building genre has taken the world by storm and Terraria has garnered a massive following through its increased focus on adventure and discovery.” said Tim Woodley, head of global brand for 505 Games. “We’re looking forward to bringing an already hugely successful experience to a brand new console audience and we can’t wait for the existing Terraria fan base to experience all-new content.”

Terraria will be available on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network starting in “early 2013.”

  • New Far Cry 3 Trailer Shows Off Bad Guy

New Far Cry 3 Trailer Shows Off Bad Guy

The delay of Far Cry 3 until December 4th ticked off plenty of fans, some of whom had pre-ordered the game back in spring. Still, the delay has been beneficial for fans of game trailers, as new Far Cry footage is now almost constantly being released.

Today’s new Far Cry 3 trailer shows many of the same features that have already been shown, but focuses on a single bad guy. It seems Ubisoft is using the same marketing methods Square Enix is using for Hitman: Absolution. This week’s Far Cry baddie is Hoyt Volker, who leads a group of privateers and commands a large mercenary army.

The trailer is accompanies by some pretty laughable narration. The best line? “His privateer army can do a lot more than walk and chew gum at the same time – they’ve been trained to kill.” That’s wonderfully cheesy, but I’m betting the developers of the game are going for a tone that’s a bit more gritty and real for the actual game. Here’s hoping the writing for the game is better than for the trailer narration.

  • 007 Legends’ Fifth Movie Revealed: Goldfinger

It’s certainly a James Bond year. As the car and beer commercial tie-ins for the new movie, Skyfall, begin to flood the media, gamers are hoping for a video game tie-in that can bring back the glory days of Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64. While Bond games since Goldeneye haven’t been as wildly successful, 007 Legends is hoping to buck that trend.

Today, Activision has announced that the fifth Bond movie that will be a part of 007 Legends is Goldfinger. As the third James Bond flim, Goldfinger starred the original Bond, Sean Connery. In 007 Legends, however, bond will be portrayed by Daniel Craig’s modern likeness in all of the classic Bond movies depicted.

Each of the other announced movies represented in 007 Legends are from a different era of Bond. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service will represent the aborted George Lazenby era of Bond, Moonraker will showcase the most ridiculous aspects of the Roger Moore Era, License to Kill shows off Timothy Dalton’s 80’s Bond, and Die Another Day caps off Pierce Brosnan’s Bond career. It has already been announced that 007 Legends will feature feature six movie-themed missions, so it’s likely a Daniel Craig Bond movie will be the sixth.

In the Goldfinger mission, Bond will be tasked with investigating and stopping Auric Goldfinger from explosively manipulating world gold prices. With help from pilot Pussy Galore, Bond will storm Fort Knox to battle the pint-sized Oddjob and his razor-sharp bowler hat.

Check out the trailer for the Goldfinger mission below, complete with one of the most famous lines from a James Bond movie: “No Mr. Bond! I expect you to die!”

  • Last Assassin’s Creed III Vid Doc Shows Off Setting

Though it has been hard to keep up with, the fourth and last Inside Assassin’s Creed episode has finally been released. Where previous episodes have focused on the characters or weapons in the game, today’s addition shows the care that Assassin’s Creed III‘s developers have taken to create a historically accurate setting.

The most impressive feat mentioned in the video is that the developers have recreated 18th century versions of Boston, New York, and the American countryside. “We had to go back and get our historian to find us accurat maps from the era of what Boston and New York looked like,” said Steven Masters, lead game designer for Assassin’s Creed III. “These are actual replicas of the cities.”

In addition to the historical accuracy, the cities have been designed for the same free-running featured in previous Assassin’s Creed games. And while “the frontier,” as developers call it, isn’t as populated, there are still plenty of activities to participate in out in the wilderness. Players will be able to hunt and free-run across the boughs of trees.

  • New Dishonored Developer Diary Discusses “End Game”

With the launch of Dishonored less than one month away, Bethesda and Arkane Studios are wrapping up their four-part series of developer documentaries. Where last week’s dev diary video focused on immersing players in the steampunk dystopia that the developers have created created, this week’s video discusses what final tweaks the developers are making to the game now that it is finished.

It’s clear from this video and the others that the creators of Dishonored are in love with their game. They talk about wanting players to feel like a supernatural assassin, to see the consequences of their actions spread throughout the game world. Listening to them, its hard not to share in their excitement. Viktor Antonov, a visual design director on the game, described it as, “A mixture of romantic, mysterious atmosphere, and a lot of violence and adrenelline mixed together.”

Players will soon get a chance to experience Dishonored and decide for themselves whether these developers’ hard work has paid off. The game is set for an October 9th release in North America and an October 12th release throughout Europe.

  • Borderlands 2 Launch Trailer Released on the Eve of Launch

The trailers for Borderlands 2 have so far been fantastic. Specifically, the launch date announcement trailer was fun for those who enjoy dubstep, and the later “Wimoweh” trailer calmed things down for those who enjoy the classics.

Today, on the eve of the game’s launch, 2K and Gearbox released the launch trailer for Borderlands 2. While it doesn’t have the flash and creativity of the previous trailers, it does set the stage for what players can expect to find themselves up against.

It appears that the vault hunters will racing Handsome Jack to a special vault that contains an unnamed horror. A horror that could end all life on Pandora. Save the planet, yada, yada…

Anyway, while the story is sure to be a nice touch, there are “bazillions” of guns to collect, starting in less than 24 hours. Check out the last trailer before players get their hands on the title itself:

  • New Assassin’s Creed III Vid Doc Reveals Assassin

It’s clear that the marketing budget for AAA gaming titles is now huge. In addition to Microsoft releasing a flood of Halo 4 documentaries, a web series, and trailers, Ubisoft has been keeping pace by releasing a ton of preview content for Assassin’s Creed III.

Some of the content, such as the preview for the underwhelming Mayan Ruins pre-order mission, has been disappointing. The developer video documentary shorts, however, have been a wealth of information about the characters, gameplay, and setting of Assassin’s Creed III. They have revealed just what was going on in the developer’s minds when they decided to set the next game in one of Ubisoft’s flagship IP’s during the American Revolution.

The third documentary short out of four was released this week, and it delves into the background of the main character of Assassin’s Creed III, Connor. As half Native American, half European, it appears Connor will find himself, literally, embodying the conflict between the new world and the old.

This week’s video also shows how deeply Connor will be involved in the American Revolution. Players will get to be a part of the Battle of Bunker Hill, meet George Washington, and dispatch what looks to be hundreds of Redcoats.

  • Guild Wars 2 Sales Resume, New Trailer Released

Almost two weeks ago, ArenaNet suspended sales of Guild Wars 2 after its servers were inundated by an overwhelming flood of new players. Needless to say, the game has been a resounding success so far.

However, fantastic, overcrowded game launches are something of a trope in the MMO world these days, and a game must work hard to keep the attention of increasingly fickle MMO fans. Guild Wars 2 already uses a free-to-play model, though, which should put it a step ahead of games that are only now transitioning to free-to-play.

This week, ArenaNet announced that Guild Wars 2 is once again available for purchase through retailers and the Guild Wars 2 website. The company has used its respite from sales to beef up its server numbers in North America and Europe, and to double its number of customer support agents. The company states that the Trading Post should be working better now.

“Preserving the customer experience has always been our top priority,” said Mike O’Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet. “We’re supporting Guild Wars 2 for the long run. We’ll always do what it takes to deliver the best online gaming experience for our customers, even when that means throttling sales.”

That’s a pretty bold statement, but one that is sure to resonate with MMO fans. ArenaNet certainly did put its money where its mouth is, though, and suspending sales cannot have been an easy decision.

As a re-release celebration, ArenaNet has released the new “Our Time is Now” launch trailer. The company touts that the trailer is directed by James McTeigue, the director of movies such as V For Vendetta and Ninja Assassin.

  • New Assassin’s Creed III Trailer Shows Mayan Ruins Pre-Order Mission

Ubisoft may have ditched its game-breaking always-on DRM requirements, but the company is still driving the pre-order exclusives into the ground. For Assassin’s Creed III, players who pre-order the game from GameStop will receive an exclusive, day-one DLC mission called Lost Mayan Ruins.

Today Ubisoft released a trailer for the bonus level, and it looks way more boring than its name suggests. No enemies are shown in the ruins, so it appears to be a simple climb-and-fetch mission slapped together so that Ubisoft didn’t just give GameStop pre-orderers the real object of the mission: the Sawtooth Sword. The sword is evidently the long lost treasure of Captain Kidd. If it’s as amazing and “legendary” as the video makes it out to be, it might be game-breaking.

No matter how many times gamers are subjected to retailer-specific, day-one DLC and add-ons it, unfortunately, seems the scheme is here to stay. Even Nintendo is getting in on the action, at least in a small way. As long as gamers keep pre-ordering from brick-and-mortar stores for the chance to have their game character, during the American Revolution, travel all the way to Mexico to retrieve the sword of a Scottish privateer, then retailer-specific DLC will be here to stay.

  • New Resident Evil 6 Trailers Released

Resident Evil fans have already been treated to plenty of Resident Evil 6 gameplay footage. They’ve been shown what they can expect to get in their shiny collector’s editions. Capcom has shown off their idea of a Resident Evil 6 endgame, and Dragon’s Dogma owners have had access to the demo since July.

Now, though, with less than one month to go before release day, Capcom has unleashed the real marketing. Today sees the debut of two new TV spots for the game, both titled “No Hope Left.” One features clips from Resident Evil 6’s cutscenes, while the other is a cinematic that shows the reaction of real people to…something. The release of the “C” Virus, I guess. Their faces are full of despair.

Both trailers are slightly depressing, but hopefully they foreshadow that some closure is finally coming to a few of the story arcs in the Resident Evil franchise.

  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown Preorders and Gameplay Walkthrough

XCOM: Enemy Unknown may not be the most highly anticipated game launch of the 2012 holiday season, but it is one of the more interesting and original titles coming this fall. The game allows players to take on the role of XCOM commander, managing resources and technology research back at base, while also directly commanding soldiers on the tactical, turn-based sci-fi battlefields.

Today, 2K Games and Firaxis Games announced that XCOM: Enemy Unknown is now available for preorder at all major gaming retailers. It is offering pre-orderers some exclusive DLC called the Elite Soldier Pack, which consists of aesthetic customizations for players’ soldiers and an X-COM: UFO Defense-inspired soldier. The game has a scheduled release date of October 9 in the U.S.

Also, as a bonus, 2K Games today released a gameplay demonstration that was shown in secret at E3 and PAX. The trailer shows off combat in the game and demonstrates some of the tactics and weapons players will be using against the unknown alien threat:

  • New Hitman: Absolution ICA File Trailer Released

The run-up to Hitman: Absolution has been packed with content and not a little controversy. Square Enix announced back in May that the game will be released on November 20 and then released some pre-launch DLC for customers who pre-ordered at GameStop. Then came the trailers.

More specifically, then came the nuns trailer, which featured tall, leggy women in skimpy leather outfits wearing nun habits. The video understandably caused accusations of sexism and misogyny, and IO Interactive promptly apologized.

IO then began releasing teaser trailers featuring the backstory of the villians in Hitman: Absolution, including the nuns. The vignettes revealed that the game is told in the style of a 70s-era exploitation movie, making the ridiculous costumes and conceits at least make sense in context.

Today IO released its latest “ICA File” trailer, this one featuring the villain named Blake Dexter. Dexter is a good-old-boy weapons manufacturer who uses violence to forward his business. He will be voiced by Kieth Carradine, who TV viewers may know as Frank Lundy from Dexter or Wild Bill Hickok from Deadwood.

  • New The Last of Us Gameplay Footage Shows Stealthy Gameplay

When the gameplay footage of The Last of Us was shown at Sony’s big E3 press conference this year, it was presented as an ultra-realistic post-apocalyptic survival story. It also showed brutal footage that included brutal and disturbingly graphic violence. Faces were smashed and shot in a presentation that fit well with E3 2012’s running theme of ultraviolence.

So, it’s obvious that The Last of Us can be played with a sort of gung-ho brutality. Perhaps, though, Sony’s E3 presentation was more about showing how the impressive enemy AI reacted to quickly changing combat situations. Today, Sony has released more The Last of Us gameplay footage from the recent Penny Arcade Expo Prime in Seattle. This time, exploration and stealth are highlighted, showing that force isn’t the only option for gamers. As you can see, though, a battle seems to be inevitable:

For what it’s worth, the footage was posted to the PlayStation blog by Eric Monacelli, community strategist at Naughty Dog. Monacelli’s blog post stated that the developers didn’t want gamers to be stuck with crappy smartphone hidden-camera footage of the gameplay.

  • New Halo 4 Trailer Shows Behind-the-Scenes Footage

Many gamers are trepidatious about one of the biggest video game franchises changing developers, but Microsoft is out to convince everyone that Halo is in good hands.

Halo 4 is the most anticipated Xbox 360 game of 2012, and many details about the game are already known. A live-action web series called Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn will build a small preface to the game’s story. All that’s left is for the developers behind the game to be showcased.

This weekend at the Penny Arcade Expo, Microsoft revealed a new trailer that showcases the people who have worked on Halo 4. As shown below, it appears that the developers are passionate about the Halo series, That will be a welcome relief to gamers, since Microsoft could have just slapped together a terrible Halo sequel and made money.

  • New Assassin’s Creed III Trailer Discusses Weapons of the 18th Century

The release of Assassin’s Creed III is now only two months away (unless you want it on PC), and the marketing team for the game has revealed nearly all the secrets to the game’s background and that of it’s PlayStation Vita tie-in game, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation.

Now the team behind Ubisoft’s new game is revealing some of the behind-the-scenes footage of the game’s development. Last week, the first of a four-part documentary series called Inside Assassin’s Creed III showed off the hard work of the development team and outlined why the American Revolution was chosen as a setting.

The second part of the documentary, seen below, shows off the weapons and combat system of Assassin’s Creed III. Setting the game during the American Revolution is a huge change for the series, and the design team states that they took their time to find period-specific weapons for Connor to use when slicing up redcoats. The Native American assassin primarily uses a tomahawk, bow, and rope dart. The combat system was apparently designed to be more free-flowing and allow for quick escapes.

Next week’s portion of the documentary has been teased as being about the game’s main character, Connor.

  • New XCOM: Enemy Unknown Trailer Released

New XCOM: Enemy Unknown Trailer Released

The latest trailer for 2K Games’ XCOM: Enemy Unknown highlights the sacrifices players are going to have to make if they hope to push back the alien invasion. As commander, gamers will have to balance sending soldiers to die with the costs of training those soldiers.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a sequel to the original XCOM, which was released nearly two decades ago in 1993. The sequel will feature action and strategy gameplay, as gamers have to recruit and train soldiers, perform research, and develop tactics to combat an alien invasion. If gamers are looking for some good interplanetary-war science fiction gaming this fall that isn’t Halo 4, XCOM might be a good option.

The game is scheduled for release on October 9th in the U.S. Check out the “Casualties of War” trailer below to see some of the frightening, brutal enemies and valiant soldiers that will clash in XCOM: Enemies Unknown.

  • New Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation Info and Trailer From Gamescom

Gamescom 2012 is shaping up to be the best gaming conference of the year. While developers and publishers teased gamers at E3 with hints of what is to come, Gamescom is becoming a show-and-tell-all event. Of course, part of the reason for this is that the holiday buying season, and therefore the release dates of major titles, are just on the horizon.

Assassin’s Creed III is only a little over two months away (though not for PC gamers), and anticipation for what is already one of the most anticipated games of the year is still increasing.

At Gamescom this week Ubisoft has unveiled yet another trailer for Assassin’s Creed, this time for Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, which is the PlayStation Vita version of Assassin’s Creed III. The trailer shows how the female assassin Aveline de Grandpré will make her way in an 18th century version of New Orleans:

Martin Capel, a Producer at Ubisoft also provided answers about Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation for a global q & a session at Gamescom. When asked about Aveline, Capel stated:

“What I can tell you about Aveline is that she is of mixed heritage – her father is French and her mother African. She is born of a form of temporary marriage called plaçage, where wealthy young men would typically take an African, Chinese or Native American women for a bride before they later found a more “acceptable” French bride. Plaçage was created because not enough French women could be persuaded to immigrate to the New World, and resulted in many children. Some of the children were pressed into slavery, while others were truly loved by their fathers, and were raised and educated with all the benefits that their father’s wealth could bring.

“Aveline is one of these lucky ones.

“As she grows, Aveline sees New Orleans from both sides – the luxury and social position that her father’s money brings, contrasted by the treatment she sees of those who share her mother’s heritage. Becoming a young woman, Aveline’s inner strength and confidence develop – she becomes an opponent of slavery, while her father’s love, wealth and status shields her from repercussions from the more conservative elements.”

  • Thief 4 Trailer Leaked Online

Fans of the Thief series of video games have been waiting for another Thief game for longer than we’ve all been waiting for Half Life 3, if you don’t count the episodes. In the past eight years, gamers have seen stealth gameplay incorporated into lots of games, but it hasn’t been the focus of many. The Assassin’s Creed franchise perhaps comes closest to the feel of Thief, though it is a long way from anything other than a spiritual successor.

You can see why, then, it is so exciting that footage of a new Thief game has surfaced online. It has been known for several years now that the developers at Eidos Montreal have been working on Thief 4. Eidos Montreal was the development team that created last year’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The folks over at Enizr were evidently following the studio closely enough to notice when a lighting and compositing artist at Eidos Montreal named Eric Wong put out a demo reel of his work – including a 30-second clip of Thief 4 CGI work.

As Enizr mentions, the posting is gone now, but the leak has already spread to YouTube. Though there is no gameplay footage in the leak, take a look at the clip below to see some poor-quality next-generation Thief action:

  • Halo 4 Live-Action Commercial Preview

    Halo 4 Live-Action Commercial Preview

Halo 4 was, unless you are an Usher fan, undoubtedly the highlight of Microsoft’s E3 press conference. The gameplay shown there gave gamers a taste of what they can expect when the game launches this fall. It included a new planet, a crashing ship, an alien sphere, new artificial enemies, and lots of Cortana.

This summer, Microsoft is officially launching its marketing campaign for the game, and it looks as if they are sparing no expense. A live-action commercial for the game has been released online, and it shows what happens in the seconds leading up to the ship crash in the gameplay footage shown at E3. Watch as the starship U.N.S.C. Infinity is scanned by an alien intelligence and then dragged through what appears to be a Dyson Sphere-type structure. What that sphere and the artificial aliens have to do with the story in Halo 4 is anyone’s guess. However, the weapons that Master Chief finds are of Forerunner origin, leading me to believe the new planet might have been constructed as a safe-haven from inevitable Halo activations. Check out the ad below, as well as the gameplay footage already released and decide for yourself what exactly is going on:

A word about the date shown at the end of the spot: the commercial is meant to be shown in the U.K., so don’t get your hopes up thinking the game was released this week. Compared to the U.S., the month and day in dates are swapped when shown in most European countries. The release date for the game is still November 6 and is already available for pre-order.
