  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Draws Torrent Piracy

As Forbes’ Andy Greenberg is reporting, HBO’s Game of Thrones is a huge hit in the file-sharing community, and is on track to be the most downloaded show of 2012.

Accorrding to BitTorrent-tracking and analysis firm Big Champagne, the second season of the shaow has been downloaded more than 25 million times last month. Downloading peaked after April 30th’s episode, with 2.5 million downloads in a day.

By TorrentFreaks estimation, the show was second to Dexter last year in terms of total downloads. Game of Thrones was downloaded 3.4 million times last year, almost 40,000 more viewers than the actual broadcast on HBO. But if you look at the statistics of shows airing on network television, you notice they have a lot more viewers than they have downloads. It seems people who cannot afford to pay for premium cable shows are much more apt to just download them for free anyway.

My solution would be to offer these shows as part of a side package, so customers can see the shows they want without having to pay for cable and the premium service, which can cost $60 or more per month. A subscription to just Game of Thrones could cost a lot less and lure a lot of non-subscribers away from piracy.

This comic from the Oatmeal summarizes the dilemma well.

  • Mad Men and Game of Thrones Battle For Sunday Night Boozing Supremacy

Does anybody else feel certain cravings while watching particular TV shows?

Wait, does that sound weird? Let me elaborate.

Every time I would watch The Sopranos, I’d want a cigarette. Watching Lost always made me thirsty for a giant glass of water. And whenever I sat down to watch Weeds, well, you know.

Since 2007, AMC’s Mad Men has been the unchallenged leader in on-screen vices. Copious amounts of boozing, chain smoking, infidelity, and even some recreational drug use. If you can sit through an episode of Mad Men without pouring yourself a glass of bourbon, power to you my friend.

But in the last year, Mad Men has seen a challenger in the realm of imbibing. HBO’s Game of Thrones has come along and put a goblet of wine in nearly every character’s hand at any given moment. I don’t think I’ve seen Tyrion Lannister in a scene without an adult accompaniment. Have you?

While that might be a bit of an exaggeration, the people of Westeros sure do love their drink. But do they love it more than the senses-dulling figures of the 1960’s New York ad scene? The folks over at Vulture have compiled a drink off – every instance of alcohol consumption from the first few episodes of each show’s new season. Before you watch it, take your guess. Which cast is hitting the sauce the hardest?

Surprised? It looks like our champion remains undefeated. While the people of Mad Men have noticeably cut back on the Lucky Strikes, the fifth season shows no sign of cutting back on the booze.

Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political and sexual intrigue is pervasive. Robert Baratheon, King of Westeros, asks his old friend Eddard, Lord Stark, to serve as Hand of the King, or highest official. Secretly warned that the previous Hand was assassinated, Eddard accepts in order to investigate further. Meanwhile the Queen’s family, the Lannisters, may be hatching a plot to take power. Across the sea, the last members of the previous and deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also scheming to regain the throne. The friction between the houses Stark, Lannister and Baratheon, and with the remaining great houses Greyjoy, Tully, Arryn, and Tyrell, leads to full-scale war. All while a very ancient evil awakens in the farthest north. Amidst the war and political confusion, a neglected military order of misfits, the Night’s Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and icy horrors beyond.

  • Game of Thrones Gets a Playmobil Remake

We often see version of films, TV shows, and other motion picture art remade with Legos, but it’s been awhile since I’ve seen a proper Playmobil version of something. In fact, until I did some digging, I couldn’t remember ever seeing one. After some searching, I found an awesome Playmobil Joy Division video, but we’ll get to that later.

Because first up, we have today’s coolest trailer – a remake of the original Game of Thrones season one trailer, with Playmobil toys.

You all know Playmobil, right? The nearly 40-year-old company has been completing with the likes of Lego for a couple of decades in the toy-person market, as well as the realm of toy train, cars, buildings, etc. If you’ve never built your own Playmobil diorama, you probably had a weird childhood.

And I hope we all know Game of Thrones by now. The widely populat book series by George R.R. Martin has been turned into and even more popular TV series on HBO. It’s currently into its second season, and only getting better. Let’s just put it this way: I can’t wait for my weekend to end so I can watch Game of Thrones on Sunday evening. I know how bad that sounds.

So it’s no surprise that I think that this video, courtesy of HSMprojects, it pretty great. Check it out below:

Remember what I said before about stumbling across another awesome sto-motion Playmobil creation. Here, you can have that too:

  • Game Of Thrones Minecraft Project Progresses With Tour Of Westeros

Game Of Thrones Minecraft Project Progresses With Tour Of Westeros

It’s old news that the Minecraft community is massively creative. They’ve created tons of awesome places and contraptions inside the game, some more mind-blowing than others, but all unique and impressive. For instance, Hyrulecraft recreated The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, while some players took it upon themselves to create a pretty cool Rube Goldberg machine. Last month, one of the more impressive things I’ve seen in a while happened within the world of Minecraft, as someone built a functioning graphic/scientific calculator within the game.

In early March, we told you about a Minecraft project to map out the world of Game of Thrones – which you may know from the massively popular HBO show or the George R.R. Martin series beginning with “A Song of Ice and Fire.” They had mapped out King’s Landing, and it was rather impressive.

Now, the Westeros Craft project expands to this: A “tour of Westeros,” featuring Winterfell, Kings Landing, and The Eyrie. It’s just great stuff – check it out below:

“Hey Game of Thrones fans! This is just a taste of whats available and what’s to come on the WesterosCraft Minecraft server!” More, you say? I’ll take it.

  • Game of Thrones Season Premiere Breaks Series Ratings Record

The second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones has unquestionably been one of the most highly-anticipated television events of the year. Millions of people have waited eagerly for the show to return. On Sunday night, they got their wish. The second season premier aired Sunday night on HBO.

To say that it was a hit would be an understatement. According to data published today by Variety, nearly 4 million people watched “The North Rememberes,” the first episode of the new season, when it aired on Sunday night. To be precise, 3.86 million viewers watched the show when it aired in its regular time slot at 9 PM on Sunday. Second and third airings at 10 and 11 PM drew 1.48 million and 943,000 viewers, respectively. All told, 6.28 million people watched the episode during one of its three airings on Sunday night. The episode passed last season’s finale to become the most-watched single telecast in the show’s short history. The initial telecast of that episode drew 3.04 million viewers.

Game of Thrones is based on George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. The first season dealt with the events of the first novel, A Game of Thrones, while this season will deal with the events of the second, A Clash of Kings. The fifth volume in the series, A Dance with Dragons, was released last summer. The series is currently projected to have two more books, though Martin has said that more could be added. The enormous scope of the series, coupled with the expense of turning it into a cable show, has led many to wonder whether HBO will actually manage to complete the series. While the first season was a smash hit, prompting HBO to order a second after just a few episodes, it remains to be seen whether later seasons will prove as popular.

And now, because it’s always worth a watch, here’s the most recent trailer:

Did you tune in to the new season of Game of Thrones on Sunday night? How likely is HBO to continue making the show for all seven (or more) volumes of the series? Let us know what you think in the comments.

  • Game Of Thrones Invaded By My Little Pony

Game Of Thrones Invaded By My Little Pony

The hotly anticipated second season of Game of Thrones premiers tonight on HBO. Fans have come to expect big things from the series, but what if this season was slightly off? What if George R. R. Martin’s universe was invaded by ponies?

As you all know, “Game of Thrones” is an epic fantasy that is sometimes dark and sometimes violent, but it’s always entertaining. It’s highly regarded as one of the best fantasy universes ever created and fans the world over are captivated by the political intrigue and characters that make up R. R. Martin’s universe.

Then you have “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic,” the 2010 reboot of the Hasbro brand that has created a similarly large fanbase of grown men called bronies. They love the series for its slick animation, ageless appeal and sometimes off the wall humor.

YouTube user adecoy95 has decided to mash up the two properties in a fitting tribute to both. He “ponifies” the Game of Thrones opening into a video that is 20 percent cooler than all the rest. Your mileage may vary as the sight of replacing characters from “Game of Thrones” may send you into fits, but I think the majority of nerds can appreciate it. For those that find mash up offensive to their nerd cred, check out today’s Foxtrot comic. It’s written just for those who would kill if Game of Thrones ever came under the rule of ponies.

This isn’t the first time, however, that fantasy and My Little Pony have been mashed up to stellar results. Here’s some of our favorites:

  • New Game of Thrones RPG Trailer Brings Blood, Betrayal, and The Black

Watchers of the Game of Thrones series on HBO only have a few more days to wait before winter comes, as the second season premiere debuts on April 1st. Players of the Game of Thrones RPG, however must wait until May 15th.

The game, coming to you from Cyanide Studios and Atlus publishing, is based on George R.R. Martin’s epic novel A Song of Ice and Fire as well as the immensely popular television series. According to the studio, the game won’t be an exact recreation of the novel, but will use it as a taking-off point for a new adventure altogether. That doesn’t mean that your favorite characters will be absent from the RPG, but you will have new plotlines and characters – two of which will be integral to the story.

    From Atlus:

The world of George R. R. Martin’s famous series opens further to reveal a new chapter of the story, written under supervision of the author! Travel familiar locations and meet recognizable characters as you take on the roles of two former soldiers of Robert’s Rebellion who have made choices that led them in different directions. Now, despite divergent goals, they must come together to deal with common enemies, surviving countless battles and foiling the plot that threatens the kingdom.

They’ve just released a new trailer, titled “This is War.” Check it out below:

Earlier this month, a pretty sweet gameplay trailer surfaced. And you can still pre-order the game through selected outlets like GameStop, HBO, or Amazon, and if you do you’ll receive a limited edition art book while supplies last.

  • Game of Thrones March Madness, Fill Out Your Bracket

Don’t you just love it when someone with a bit of creativity comes up with an idea meshing two amazing things into one? A Game of Thrones fan has done just that, pitting characters from the book/show against each other in a March Madness style bracket.

    It’s Westeros Madness!

The bracket creator describes the tournament, “It’s March Madness, Westeros style. Grab a pencil and fill out your brackets, then vote for your favorite characters from season one each round. 32 characters, one month, one champion. To those naysayers who ask how we can measure something as intangible as a character’s intrinsic worth, I say that’s exactly what tournaments are for. Check back throughout the month and by April 1 we’ll have a champion— just in time for the premier of season two. (Note: I’m not affiliated with HBO or George R.R. Martin. Just a fan.)

Just like in the college basketball variety, there have been some wild upsets in the first round of the tournament. Joffrey Baratheon, a #2 seed, fell to a relatively unknown character, Renly Baratheon, a #7 seed. It’s pretty obvious to see what happened, as Joffrey represents the ultimate “I really want to punch this character in the face” mentality. Most of the first season of the show was me sitting in my recliner yelling at the screen for someone to stab the little prick in the neck. But at the least he was an actual character. He deserved to make it past the first round.

Here’s how the tournament looks after the first round of voting is done, making for some interesting match-ups in the second round…

    (image)

After looking at how people voted in the first round, I think my Final Four is going to be Khal Drogo, Ned Stark, Tyrion Lannister, and Arya Stark. With the championship match putting Tyrion Lannister against Khal Drogo, in what would be an amazing fight to see take place. With Tyrion winning of course.

So, who do you have winning it all?

  • Game Of Thrones RPG Gameplay Trailer Surfaces

It was announced last year that Atlus would be publishing an RPG based on the wildly popular book and TV series, Game of Thrones. While the announcement was met with excitement, there was some disappointment that the game would focus on two new characters to the world’s fictions instead of the characters in the books.

Lord of the Rings: The Third Age pulled a similar story with outside characters looking in and it worked well because it was a fun game. I’m sure some fans will be disappointed, but just having an RPG set in Westeros should be a form of wish fulfillment for most gamers.

The recently released trailer focuses on the gameplay that the Game of Thrones RPG will be implementing. If it looks familiar to you, then you probably played BioWare’s RPG epic Dragon Age: Origins. This isn’t a bad thing since Dragon Age: Origins was pretty awesome.

It does do a few things that sets it apart from BioWare’s RPG series, especially with the active-pause battle system. While Dragon Age would pause the game outright to let you issue orders or use skills, Game of Thrones just slows down time. The developers claim this is to have the game retain the urgency that Game of Thrones is known for. It’s also a good move gameplay wise since it keeps the tension on the player.

Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think:

If the trailer has made you even more excited for the game, you can preorder it to get a really nice Game of Thrones art book.

  • Game of Thrones Season 2 Trailer: “The More You Love”

We’re less than a month away from the second season premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones. To help build anticipation for the show, a new trailer has been released online. “The More You Love” highlights some of the many plot twists that will take place in Westeros during the second season of the show. Check out the trailer for yourself below:

For those of you not familiar with the show, below is a brief synopsis:

Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plots, lust and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men…all will play the Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones season 2 premieres on HBO on April 1, 2012.

  • Simpsons Opening Sequence Goes All Game of Thrones

Last night, Fox’s long-staying The Simpsons featured a pretty awesome opening sequence which paid homage to HBO’s Game of Thrones.

At first the intro seems normal, but everything changes when Marge hits homer and sends him flying him through the garage wall. We’re then greeted with Springfield, transformed into Westeros. The intro shows all the iconic Springfield buildings being built up from the ground, equipped with spinning gears while the Game of Thrones theme plays in the background. It’s very well done, and you should check it out for yourself below.

Sure, it’s not much… but this will have to tide you over until the second season of Game of Thrones debuts on April 1st.

What did you think of the opening sequence? Let us know in the comments section below.

  • Game of Thrones Minecraft Project Maps King’s Landing

Game of Throne fans, your favorite Minecraft project has arrived. A King’s Landing map picked up on reddit, generating a large enough buzz that it made its way to me. According to their website, there are 5-7 people working on its construction, and as of February 27th, they’re 10% done.

Looking pretty hefty already for a project being 10% completed.

The project will be taking advantage of the Minecraft 1.2 update, which allows structures to increase their height even further. According to the project directors, this will allow them to make an even more impressive Eyrie (pictured below).

    Game of Thrones Eyrie

For those familiar with the Game of Thrones show, the Eyrie was featured in the first season.

They hope to have the project completed within the next few months. I will be tracking the page, so if any significant updates are made, you can find them here.

  • Netflix Might Become Part of Cable Packages

At the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in San Francisco Tuesday, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings stated that he envisions cable TV evolving into an on-demand internet platform, and that Netflix will become just another cable provider. “It’s not in the short term, but it’s in the natural direction for us in the long term. Many (cable service providers) would like to have a competitor to HBO, and they would bid us off of HBO,” said Reed.

Hastings went on to identify HBO’s Go service as being a a top competitor to Netflix, and downplayed what he refeered to as “copycat” competitors, naming Amazon and their Instant Video service. “It’s very easy for companies to over-estimate copycat competition and not see the real threat,” said Hastings, who went on to cite long-defunct internet browser Netscape – “You go back to 1995, and you talk to the Netscape sales force and ask them what their No. 1 competition is, and they’d say Spy Glass, which was taking a little market share from them at the time. But the real competition was Microsoft and bundling.”

Hastings made his remarks on the same day HBO announced that Go would be available on Xbox Live on April 1st, the same day as the season premiere of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones. Hastings also mentioned that in the Netflix focus on HBO’s evolution, producing original content is very relevant, along with pushing availability on multiple platforms. So, there might be a Netflix-produced series down the line.

  • Game of Thrones Season 2 Trailer: “Power and Grace”

Brace yourself… season 2 of Game of Thrones is nearly upon us.

From the way the first season ended, we pretty much know what to expect from season 2, and it can’t get her soon enough. To help build hype for the show, HBO debuted a new trailer for the second season through their video app/site HBO Go this past weekend. Check it out for yourself below.

Game of Thrones returns on April 1st.

  • Game of Thrones RPG Gets a Limited Edition Art Book

For gamers, winter isn’t coming until mid-may, but you have a chance to get your hands on some awesome Game of Thrones materials if you pre-order with a specific set of retailers.

Cyanide Studios’ upcoming RPG “Game of Thrones” is based on the bestselling George R. R. Martin book A Song of Ice and Fire and of course the hit HBO series set to kick off its second season in April. The game will be a “whole new adventure” that “offers alternate play [with] two brand new characters: Allester, the red priest and Mors, the night watchman.” It won’t be an exact recreation of the novel, but a companion piece offering new plots and characters interacting with the ones you know and love.

And if you pre-order the game through GameStop, EB Games, HBO, or Amazon, you will get a limited edition hardcover art book (while supplies last, of course). It will contain concept art and developer notes, and ATLUS (the publisher) thinks that it will excite fans of the book and the show alike.

    More details from ATLUS:

…[S]ixty-four full color pages of sketches, renders, photos, and screenshots from the game accompanied by compelling text and commentary from the game’s developers. The book will also include rare behind the scenes materials, like a portrait of the development team signed with a special message from author George R. R. Martin himself. The art book–measuring 8.5″ wide and 11″ tall–is hardbound, meticulously composed, and printed on premium stock, a true labor of love worthy of the series and its fans.

Here are some early images from the book:

The game is set to launch on console and PC on May 15th. Check out the official trailer below:

  • Game of Thrones Season 2 Trailer “Shadow” Is Unsurprisingly Epic

Game of Thrones Season 2 Trailer “Shadow” Is Unsurprisingly Epic

Winter is coming. Not only that, but so are quite a few nerdgasms as HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones is almost back for its second season.

HBO has just released the newest teaser trailer for the season, and it shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that it looks awesome. All of your favorite characters like Tyrion Lannister & Daenerys Targaryen play a part in the trailer, as do some of the show’s most hated like the wretched Joffrey. Check it out below:

The season two premiere is set to take place on April 1st, unless it’s some sort of cruel April Fools Joke.

Twitter is buzzing about the little tease:

  • Game of Thrones, The Killing Season Finales Battle it Out on Twitter

First off, here’s the obligatory Spoiler Alert – SPOILERS LIE AHEAD. Now having said that, if either one of the Game of Thrones or The Killing season finales are currently sitting on your DVR, get off the interwebs and go watch them – immediately.

Because both did not fail to interest, although some might argue that one failed to deliver.

AMC has begun and ended every promo for The Killing with the question “Who Killed Rosie Larsen?” Part of the appeal of a show that sets itself up in the way The Killing did is in the solving of the mystery itself. When you kick your show off with a murder and then frame the show around the day-by-day activities of all those affected by the young girl’s death, it is unavoidable that most people will demand some sort of closure by the end of the season.

But after 13 episodes, we still don’t know who the hell killed Rosie Larsen.

Critics of The Killing have been vocal during the show’s freshman season. They have cited the lack of emotional connection to the characters and the superfluous feel of some of the side plots. Others have said it rains too damn much, even for Seattle. Some have lamented AMC’s programming choices, proclaiming that the short-lived series Rubicon was better (out of your mind). But to this writer, it has been a compelling season.

Did the season finale pull the rug out from under us? Absolutely. But that doesn’t make it bad television. Are we, as viewers, so trained to expect answers and closure at the end of things that we can’t appreciate a good cliffhanger anymore? Sure, I have plenty of issues with the first season – enough to concern me going forward. But do I think the season finale was the worst thing ever? Definitely not.

But alas, the Twitterverse tends to disagree with me. Except for a select few, that is. Most of the comments on Twitter last night and this morning have been negative. Anger and frustration seem to be the most common emotions. Take for instance Entertainment Weekly writer Jeff Jensen, Office star Mindy Kaling and Scrubs/Cougar Town writer Christa Miller’s take on the finale –

I don’t regret watching The Killing, but I am disappointed. 11 hours ago via Twitter for iPhone · powered by @socialditto

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore and LOST’s Damon Lindelof defended The Killing finale, commenting on the reaction they were seeing on Twitter –

This was a great season finale 2 #thekilling. Many won’t like it-they want their pretend world 2 b tidied up cause the real 1 is such a mess 7 hours ago via OpenBeak · powered by @socialditto

Bullshit. 12 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

No spoilers. Previous tweet clearly being attributed in the wrong way. Not my reaction to THE KILLING, but my reaction to the reaction. 11 hours ago via Twitterrific · powered by @socialditto

If the common response to The Killing was disappointment, then the common response to the Game of Thrones finale was excitement.

And rightfully so. What an incredible end to an epic season. The entire first season of the fantasy series based on the George R.R. Martin novels was a masterpiece in slow, compelling storytelling. The show proved its confidence and trust in its audience with the penultimate episode’s dispatching of the main character. And the season finale ended with the promise of a spectacular season two.

    And, um, baby dragons?

I know I’m gushing, but I’m not the only one. Modern Family’s Danny Zuker sure seems to approve –

Don’t get me wrong, LOVE Mad Men, but it never made me want to forge my own sword & bring house Lannister to it’s knees. #GoT #GeekGasm 11 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Twitter was pretty unified behind the awesomeness of the finale. Here are some of the top tweets –

The biggest loss in Game of Thrones isn’t Ned. It’s the people who decided to stop watching after episode nine. THEIR loss. #gameofthrones 7 hours ago via Echofon · powered by @socialditto

  • Sean Bean Gets Badass Reputation on Twitter

Veteran British actor and recent Game of Thrones star Sean Bean is currently gaining quite the reputation on Twitter. Today, a story came out about a Sunday night incident at a bar that involves all the elements of a real life hero story – chivalry, bravery, and a hard man with little regard for his personal safety.

In fact Sean Bean was apparently stabbed in the arm with a piece of glass after confronting a man who had harassed his female companion. While Bean was having a smoke with 30 year-old Playboy model April Summers, a passer-by made inappropriate comments about her. Bean confronted the man. Later that night, the man attacked him. Instead of seeking medical attention, he instead decided to go back inside the bar and have another drink. According to the DailyMail:

The four-time married star was apparently attacked outside the Hill Bar and Brasserie in Camden, North West London late on Sunday evening.

Mr Bean was said to have a cut arm and a bruised face, according to witnesses.

However, extraordinarily, he declined to attend hospital.

Instead, the star walked back into the bar and, after staff gave him aid from a first aid kit, ordered another drink.

A member of staff said: ‘Sean is a regular here and we’ve never had any problems before. He was with a very attractive woman and an incident occurred outside the bar.

‘He came in with a cut on his arm and a bruise on his eyebrow. We saw to his injuries with the first aid kit.He seemed ok and wanted to have another drink.’

So Sean Bean protected a woman’s honor, fought off an attacker and went back to the bar for a drink (I bet it was straight whiskey).

As the story of this started gaining steam, he has become a trending topic on Twitter, with nearly every tweet about him discussing his badassery.

Sean Bean has been in the news lately due to the breakout hit show Game of Thrones on HBO. I will give no spoilers as to why, but suffice to say his impact on the show has been enormous. If you don’t watch the show – you should. And if you do but haven’t seen the latest episode – you need to do that as soon as possible. Please.

The Sean Bean-arm-stab-drink-order-story is bound to be remembered fondly, in the same way that German filmmaker and all around awesome individual Werner Herzog is remembered for taking a bullet and continuing an interview. It was okay to Herzog, as “it was not a significant bullet.”
