    Oculus Rift Ships, SDK Updated

Facebook’s Oculus announced pre-orders for the Oculus Rift virtual reality device in January for $599. The company just announced that shipping to over 20 countries and regions is now underway. Kickstarter units are shipping today while the first pre-ordered Rifts will start shipping mid-week, and arrive shortly thereafter.

There are already over 30 games available on the Oculus Store, which can be played immediately. They’re also launching Oculus Video for Rift today. This features thousands of Facebook 360 videos and “the best of” Vimeo and Twitch livestreams.

“We’ll be adding feature-length movies, new partners, and lots more content to Oculus Video soon,” a spokesperson for the company tells us in an email.

Oculus 360 Photos lets users explore 200,000 places.

The device also comes with Farlands, which is described as an alien world and a “new kind of VR experience”. This was created by Oculus and built with Epic’s Unreal Engine 4. It was designed specifically for the Rift.

Developers will be pleased to know that the Oculus PC SDK 1.3 is now available on the Oculus Developer Center. It includes new features, including support for the consumer Rift, app lifecycle support, native integrations with the latest releases of Unity and Unreal Engine, and Asynchronous Timewarp (ATW). You can learn more about that here.

  • Google Just Renamed The Chromecast App

Google Just Renamed The Chromecast App

Google announced that it has renamed the Chromecast app to fit better with its strategy of providing cast technology across more device. When the app was first launched, the Chromecast name made sense because Chromecast was the only device that utilized it at the time, and Google had to do so some branding around that device, which has since proven pretty popular.

Since Chromecast was released, however, more devices have emerged to use Google Cast, including speakers, Android TVs, game consoles, etc.

Now, the app is simply called the Google Cast app. The updated app is rolling out this week on both Android and iOS.

Along with this announcement, Google announced support from the new VIZIO SmartCat P-Series displays and VIZIO soundbars and speakers.

“The P-series now comes with Google Cast built in, which means you can use your smartphone or tablet as your remote to cast your favorite entertainment directly to the big screen,” says product manager Adam Champy. “Simply tap the Cast button from apps like Netflix to watch Daredevil, YouTube to stream daredevil stunts, or Google Play Music to get pumped for your own stunts. You can also mirror any website from the Chrome browser on your laptop. So whether you’re planning your next vacation and looking through flights and hotels with the family, or want to share a video from your last epic trip, just look for the Google Cast extension in the corner of your desktop browser.”

“The P-Series also supports casting Ultra HD (up to 4K) and Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range content (bright, clear colors!),” Champy adds. “Included with every P-series is VIZIO’s 6” Android tablet remote, a tablet that lives in the living room and can cast all your favorite content.”

  • Amazon Unveils Echo Dot and Amazon Tap

Amazon Unveils Echo Dot and Amazon Tap

Amazon announced two new Alexa-enabled devices called Echo Dot and Amazon Tap.

Describing the former, an Amazon spokesperson tells WebProNews, “Echo Dot is a hands-free, voice controlled device that uses the same far-field voice recognition as Echo. Directly connect Echo Dot to speakers with an audio cable or via Bluetooth, and add voice-control to your home stereo system. Plus, with its small built-in speaker, you can place Echo Dot in the bedroom and use it as a smart alarm clock, or in any room as a voice assistant to control smart home devices and more.”

The device is available for $89.99 exclusively for Prime members through Alexa Voice Shopping. To order an Echo Dot, existing Echo and Fire TV customers can just say “Alexa, order an Echo Dot.”

You can check out the device here.

“Amazon Tap is an Alexa-enabled portable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi speaker that offers rich, full-range sound,” the spokesperson says. “Just tap the microphone button and ask for music, hear the news, search for information, order a pizza, and more with the Alexa Voice Service. Amazon Tap is now available for pre-order for $129.99. You can check that out here.

Amazon’s Echo has proven to be a popular device, particularly compared to its failed Fire Phone. The company said it was the number one best seller across all $100+ products available on Amazon.com on Black Friday. In November, Amazon Echo was added to the inventories of 3,000 stores throughout the U.S. including The Home Depot, Staples, Sears, Brookstone, Radioshack, Fred Meyer, P.C. Richard & Son, and others.

Echo gained new support from Spotify and Uber about a month ago.

Portable battery boosters are a great idea. Trouble is you’ve always left them at home when your phone decides to haemorrhage its last 20% of battery and leave you in the lurch.

With today’s announcement, SpaceIL is the first of the 16 Lunar X Prize teams to book a ride off the planet. If the mission succeeds, it will be the first Israeli mission — as well as the first private spaceflight mission — to soft-land a vehicle on the lunar surface. Eran Privman, CEO of SpaceIL, claimed the group isn’t focused on the competition, but they are confident they can win. “I promise you once we land on the Moon, we’ll look around and see we are the first,” he said.

Only three nations have ever landed a spacecraft intact on the Moon: the United States, Russia, and China. Many countries have slammed lunar orbiters or probes into the Moon to study its environment, but gently landing a spacecraft is trickier. The Moon is big enough to have a gravitational pull, but it doesn’t have an atmosphere to slow incoming objects. Spacecraft in lunar orbit must fire retro-rockets, very precisely, in the opposite direction of the Moon. That way they can slowly descend without slamming into the rock. It’s a delicate procedure that usually requires a lot of time and money, which is why only government agencies have been able to do it up until now.

Amazon Claims Record Weekend For Its Devices

Amazon says it had a record holiday shopping weekend for sales of its devices. While the company didn’t reveal any hard numbers, it says it sold “millions of devices” and 3x over last year.

The top-selling products across all of the products available on Amazon.com on Black Friday were Amazon devices. #1 was Fire and #2 was Fire TV Stick. Of course it probably helps that the company recently removed the competition from its site.

Amazon Fire TV sales were up more than 6x year over year for the holiday shopping weekend, the company says, noting that from July through October (the last month for which there is data) Fire TV has been the top streaming media player in the US, across all retailers.

On Black Friday, Amazon Echo was the top seller across all $100+ products on Amazon.com, according to the company. The new $49.99 Fire tablet is the fastest-selling Amazon tablet ever, with millions sold since launch, it says. Amazon sold “hundreds of thousands” of Kindle e-readers over the weekend.

“We’re excited that millions of customers will be opening new Amazon devices this holiday season. This has already been the biggest holiday shopping season for Amazon devices, and we’re energized by the year over year growth for all of our product categories,” said Dave Limp, Senior Vice President, Amazon Devices. “With a sub-$50 price point for one or $250 for a six-pack, we’ve reached a tipping point with Fire—it is our fastest-selling tablet ever. We’ve already built millions—and we’re ramping up production to build millions more.”

There are stats about online shopping on Thanksgiving and Black Friday in general from a variety of sources here.

  • Microsoft’s Zune Completely Dead Now

    Microsoft’s Zune Completely Dead Now

Microsoft first released the Zune as its competitor to Apple’s iPod in 2006. While the device looked promising at the time, it just didn’t work out. It was discontinued in 2011, but the brand and some associated capabilities have lingered around in the meantime.

That ends now. A couple months ago, Microsoft announced the official retirement of the Zune brand. From Microsoft Support:

As of November 15, 2015, Zune services will be retired. You will no longer be able to stream or download content to your device from the Zune music service. However, Zune devices will still function as music players and any MP3 content that you own on the Zune device will remain there. You’ll also be able to transfer music to and from your Zune player.

Existing Zune Music Pass subscriptions will be converted to Groove Music Pass subscriptions.

Note If you’ve received a 25-digit code and it doesn’t work, wait until the day of the month your subscription began before trying again. If you don’t know what day that is, you can find it in your Microsoft account, or you can contact Xbox Support. (For example, if your annual subscription began on February 5, then it would be the 5th of the month.)

If you’re still clinging to your Zune, I’m afraid the time has come to loosen your grip and evolve with the times.

  • Google Unveils New Nexus Phones, Pixel C Tablet

Google Unveils New Nexus Phones, Pixel C Tablet

Google made a bunch of announcements at a press event today, including the new Chromecast and Chromecast Audio, which we talked about here. Among the announcements were three new Android devices from the company.

Two of these are new Nexus phones: the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X. Both include a new fingerprint sensor called Nexus Imprint and Android Pay in the U.S. Google describes the devices:

Nexus 6P is the first all-metal-body Nexus phone. Built in collaboration with Huawei, this 5.7” phone is crafted from aeronautical-grade aluminum, with a USB Type-C port for fast charging, a powerful 64-bit processor, and a 12.3 MP camera sensor with massive 1.55µm pixels (hello, better photos!). The Nexus 6P starts at $499.

You’re not the only one who misses your Nexus 5. We’ve joined forces with LG to bring it back with the new Nexus 5X, which gives you great performance in a compact and light package, with a beautiful 5.2” screen and the same 12.3 MP camera and Type-C port as the Nexus 6P. Nexus 5X starts at $379.

The third device is a new tablet called the Pixel C, which while being an Android device, is being placed in a family of products with Google’s Chromebook Pixel. It has a full-size keyboard that attaches magnetically and an aluminum design, as well as a USB Type-C port.

Screen Shot 2015-09-29 at 2.22.10 PM

The phones are available for pre-order on the Google Store in the US, UK, Ireland, and Japan. It’s unclear exactly when the tablet will be available, but Google says it will be in time for the holidays. It will start at $499.

The newest version of Android (Marshmallow) is set to roll out next week.

  • Netflix, Hulu And Others Headed To Virtual Reality

Netflix, Hulu And Others Headed To Virtual Reality

You’ll soon be able to watch Netflix, Hulu, and other video streaming services in virtual reality, it was revealed today at an Oculus developers conference.

At first, the new experiences will just let you watch content like normal in virtual reality settings. For example, you’ll be able to watch Seinfeld on Hulu while sitting on a virtual version of Jerry’s couch.

Hulu says its new VR app will be available this fall with immersive 3D environments from which you can watch anything from its library of content. Eventually, it will include original VR content beginning with a short film from the people behind RocketJump: The Show, which is produced by Lionsgate and RocketJump. From Hulu’s announcement:

The range of experiences will include viewers transporting themselves into a comfortable living room setting to catch the latest episode of the Hulu Original Difficult People. Viewers can also choose to view Hulu’s library of premium content including movies and current season TV in a classic movie theater setting. Seinfeld fans can choose to be transported on to the blue couch in Jerry’s iconic apartment to watch favorite episodes of the series.

“Hulu lives at the intersection of technology and entertainment, and this is a great example,” said Julian Eggebrecht, Hulu VP of Device Platforms. “Providing viewers with dynamic environments of their choice and themed around their favorite shows provides a whole new level of engagement, which together with our cinematic VR experiences makes Hulu an exciting VR destination.”

Hulu will also create and house a variety of cinematic VR films across multiple genres that transport viewers into new worlds and change the way they experience and interact with Hulu. The first of these is the ground-breaking VR short film “The Big One,” on which Hulu partnered with Lionsgate to bring Freddie Wong and his RocketJump brand into the virtual reality space. “The Big One” will become a bonus short for Freddie Wong’s new Hulu series, RocketJump: The Show, which chronicles his filmmaking adventures. Produced by Lionsgate in tandem with RocketJump and VR innovator WEVR, “The Big One” invites users to witness a meteor shower that soon turns into an apocalyptic nightmare. The end is near, and Hulu VR viewers will have a front row seat.

They’re not giving a release date yet.

Netflix is offering a virtual living room experience that’s immediately available for Oculus.

“We’ve been working with Oculus to develop a Netflix app for Samsung Gear VR,” says Anthony Park, VP of Engineering at Netflix. “The app includes a Netflix Living Room, allowing members to get the Netflix experience from the comfort of a virtual couch, wherever they bring their Gear VR headset. It’s available to Oculus users today.”

The Netflix Tech Blog is featuring a post from Oculus CTO John Carmack, who gets into how they built it.

Beyond Netflix and Hulu, Vimeo, Twitch, and Tivo are also reportedly on board. Facebook and YouTube of course are already providing 360-degree videos ideal for the virtual reality experience. Facebook announced the launch of its videos in the News Feed earlier this week.

Also announced at the conference is a new $99 Samsung Gear VR headset that makes use of the Oculus platform, which should serve a a major component in getting this stuff to the masses.

  • Amazon Just Unveiled A Bunch Of New Fire Devices

Amazon has been making headlines over the failure of its Fire Phone, but its Fire tablets and Fire TV devices live on with new models just being unveiled in time for the holiday shopping season. The company announced a new Fire tablet, new Fire HD tablet models, and a new Fire Kids Edition tablet as well as a new Fire TV model and new Fire TV Gaming Edition.

    New Fire Tablet

First up is the new Fire tablet (pictured above). This is a $49.99 device that Amazon says has the best display on any tablet under $50. It has a quad-core processor, 7” IPS display, front- and rear-facing cameras, and up to 128GB of expandable storage.

“Today, we’re taking another step in our mission to deliver premium products at non-premium prices,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. “The all-new Fire features a quad-core processor, is incredibly durable, and is backed by the Amazon content ecosystem, the new Amazon Underground, and Amazon customer service with Mayday Screen Sharing. Fire sets a new bar for what customers should expect from a low cost tablet.”

    New Fire HD Tablets

Next up is the new line of Fire HD tablets, which Amazon has designed from the ground up with an 8” or 10.1” widescreen HD display, a thinner and lighter design, quad-core processor, stereo speakers, front- and rear-facing cameras, and microSD card support for up to 128GB.

    new-fire

The tablets come with Amazon’s latest operating system, Fire OS 5 “Bellini”. This includes an updated user interface, deeper integration of Amazon services and literally hundreds of new and upgraded features and updates. One of these is On Deck, which automatically keeps your tablet current with popular Prime movies and TV shows as well as Amazon’s original programming. It uses available storage “opportunistically in a special shadow mode,” as Amazon puts it. When you download something, it makes room for your selected content, so you have to clear out space yourself.

You can get a look at more of the features here.

The Fire HD 8 with the 8″ display is $149.99. The HD 10 with the 10.1″ display is $229.99. They ship on September 30.

    New Fire Kids Edition

The New Fire Kids Edition is also built from the ground up, and is now cheaper at $100. It comes with a year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, a “kid-proof case,” and a 2-year guarantee which lets you return it “if anything happens,” and they’ll replace it for free.

Screen Shot 2015-09-17 at 10.58.58 AM

It gives kids access to over 20,000 “age-appropriate” sites and YouTube videos curated by Amazon’s “experts,” and with FreeTime, they’ll be able to access over 10,000 books, videos, educational apps, and games, which is double the selection from last year.

    New Fire TV

According to Amazon, the new Fire TV is 75% more powerful. It includes “best-in-class” Wi-Fi, support for Alexa (Amazon’s virtual assistant software), and supports 4K Ultra HD. The company says it offers the most 4K Ultra HD movies, and is half the price of any other 4K Ultra HD streaming media player.”

Screen Shot 2015-09-17 at 11.05.04 AM

The device includes voice features powered by Alexa, which let you ask for music, information, weather, traffic, etc.

It provides access to over 3,000 channels, apps, and games. It’s available for pre-order for $99.99 and ships October 5.

There’s also a new Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote that also includes voice search and Alexa integration. That’s $49.99 and ships October 22.

“The team has packed an incredible amount of technology and innovation into a tiny package,” said Bezos. “The new Fire TV includes 4K support, more processing power, Alexa integration, the largest selection, and exclusive features—for less than $100. The new Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote brings voice search and Alexa integration for less than $50. These are powerful devices at incredible prices.”

Finally, there’s a new Fire TV Gaming Edition that combines Fire TV with a new game controller, a 32 GB microSD card, and includes two games: Shovel Knight and Disney’s Ducktales. The controller includes a headphone jack. This will run you $139.99.

  • Amazon Makes Echo Smart Device Available To The Masses

Last year, Amazon unveiled Echo, its smart device that serves as a speaker and a virtual assistant. Until now, it’s been available on an invitation basis, but on Tuesday, Amazon announced that it’s now available to all customers.

You can now pre-order the device for $179.99, and it will begin shipping on July 14. It also has some new features.

“The customer response to Amazon Echo has been incredibly positive, and we’ve been working hard to build more as quickly as possible. We are grateful to our early customers for their incredible engagement and for providing us with invaluable feedback to help shape Echo as it evolves—with their help, we’ve been able to add features like Audible, Pandora, home automation, sports scores, calendar, and more,” said Greg Hart, Vice President of Amazon Echo. “We’re excited to get Echo into the hands of even more customers and continue to invent new features and experiences.”

With one new feature, users can use Echo to switch on a lamp, turn on a fan or heater, dim the lights, etc. thanks to integration with Belkin WeMo and Philips Hue products.

You can now pause and skip tracks, and gives tracks thumbs up and down on Pandora and listen to audiobooks from Audible. You can say, “Alexa, read my book” to do this. Alexa is the “brain” behind Echo, by the way. It also supports Whispersync for Voice so you can switch between reading and listening without losing your place.

There’s new Google Calendar integration and the ability to re-order Prime-eligible products.

“If you’re low on kitchen supplies, want to restock on snacks, or need more rolls of duct tape for the garage, simply ask Echo to place an order for you,” the company explains. “Echo uses your order history and can order the Prime-eligible item for you using your default payment and shipping settings. If Echo can’t find the requested item in your order history, it may suggest an item for your approval using Amazon’s Choice, which picks highly-rated, well-priced, Prime-eligible products.”

You can create “if this then that” recipes using shopping and to-do lists, and use Echo to add items to Evernote, email your to-do list to your spouse, and add your list to your phone.

You can also use Echo to get sports scores and schedules and get traffic info.

Finally, there are personalized streaming music stations from Prime Music and customized news from more sources including The Economist, NPR Business, TMZ, and ESPN Radio via TuneIn.

A free SDK, which developers have already been using in private beta, will roll out later this year.

Now check out this parody of the device.

  • Amazon Launches New Store for Shark Tank Stuff

Ok, not just Shark Tank stuff – Amazon wants to sell you all the hot new gadgets and gizmos.

The company has just launched a new storefront called Amazon Exclusives, which “gives customers direct access to innovative new products from popular up-and-coming brands [including] electronics accessories, toys, sporting equipment and much more.”

Amazon’s “exclusives” are products from companies that have chosen to sell their products only on Amazon and their own websites and physical stores, of course.

And one of the big sources for these sorts of products is ABC’s hit reality show Shark Tank.

Right now, the Exclusives stores is pretty bare bones, offering Jackery mobile charging products, standup paddleboards for Tower Paddle Boards, iPhone optic lensmaker Olloclip, and Zackees, an LED glove that lets bikers give turn signals.

“Our mission on behalf of customers is to make Amazon the destination for brands and innovators to launch and sell their products, providing our customers early access to new products,” said Peter Faricy, VP of Amazon Marketplace. “We understand that helping brands gain exposure for their award-winning new products is beneficial to customers that desire to be the first to have the hot new item.”

“New brands are popping up everywhere, and it can be difficult for consumers to find and evaluate new items online. The Amazon Exclusives store provides a great environment for customers to explore hot new items,” said Stephan Aarstol, founder and CEO for Tower Paddle Boards, based in the San Diego area. “For consumers, this new shopping experience is a big win because they get the confidence of shopping on Amazon plus early access to the style and innovation of these rising star brands.”

Of course, Shark Tank products aren’t the only products that’ll appear in the Exclusives store. If Amazon wants to give virtual shelf space to new and up-and-coming products, it could be a good place for crowdsourced products to land.

  • Google Glass Will Be Back When It’s ‘Perfect’

Last month, Google Glass Explorer Edition went off the market. While it’s been pretty clear that the device would be back in one capacity or another, a plethora of articles have been written about how the device is “dead”.

Glass in the form which we’ve come to know it does pretty much appear to be dead, but Under Ivy Ross and Nest CEO Tony Fadell, Google is building a new version. We won’t see this one, however, until it’s really ready for prime time.

The New York Times ran a big piece about the rise and fall of Glass, and towards the end, it shared this bit:

“Early Glass efforts have broken ground and allowed us to learn what’s important to consumers and enterprises alike,” Mr. Fadell said in a statement. “I’m excited to be working with Ivy to provide direction and support as she leads the team and we work together to integrate those learnings into future products.”

Several people with knowledge of Mr. Fadell’s plans for Glass said he was going to redesign the product from scratch and would not release it until it was complete. “There will be no public experimentation,” one adviser to Mr. Fadell said. “Tony is a product guy and he’s not going to release something until it’s perfect.”

It’s going to be interesting to see what they come up with the next time around, and whether or not it will suffer from the same kind of ridicule the first edition did.

  • Google Glass: If You Want One, You Better Get It Now

As has been widely reported, Google Glass, at least in its current form, is going away. Google says it will continue to develop the technology, and we might see a different version somewhere down the line, but the Glass Explorer Edition that has been the focus of Google’s efforts since unveiling the device, is no more.

According to TechCrunch, this is actually the last day you’ll be able to order the device from the Google Play Store, so if you want to own a piece of history (and wish to plunk down $1,500 for it), you better act fast. Of course, you’ll probably still be able to find the device for sale elsewhere (like eBay).

Google is listing the device as “in stock” in five different colors. Be the only one on your block with an obsolete Glass Explorer Edition in tangerine.

As others have noted, you’re not likely to be seeing any software updates for the device, so if you grab one, I hope you like it just the way it is.

Google has restructured its Google Glass division, moving it over to the Google X “moonshot” lab, where it will be its own department led by Ivy Ross. Ross and the Glass unit will reportedly report to Nest CEO Tony Fadell.

Take a look back at three years of ridicule Google has been the focus of with this fun compilation. Warning: there’s a lot of Robert Scoble in the shower.

  • Google Glass: Looking Back On 3 Years Of Ridicule

It was nearly three years ago that Google first unveiled its “crazy future glasses,” under the label Project Glass, which would go on to become known as simply “Google Glass”. Now, as you may have heard, Google is halting general sales, though the Glass at Work program will continue. The team and leadership of the Glass unit is making some changes, and they’ll continue to work on future versions apparently, but the Google Glass we’ve all come accustomed to is no more.

I thought it might be fun to take a look back at some memorable Glass moments since launch that might have led to where it’s at now.

Let’s start with the original introduction video:

This was a concept video designed to introduce the world to Glass and the types of things it might be capable of. It wasn’t a representation of what was actually available, but more of a vision of how Google was approaching this new technology. While it certainly captured plenty of imagination, it also quickly became the subject of parody and ridicule.

One of the first ones demonstrated Glass as a new way to hurt yourself:

Here were a a few other first impressions:

“Google’s transition into the new Microsoft is now complete: fancy-pants sci-fi concept video to promote stunningly awkward augmented reality glasses.” – John Gruber (Daring Fireball)

“I fail to see how wearing this technology on your face means it’s out of the way.” – Joe Stracci

And that was all within one day of the announcement. From the very beginning, many just couldn’t take the device seriously, and unfortunately for Google, that just never wore off.

I’m not sure how much Sergey Brin wearing it around helped things.

More parodies quickly flooded YouTube. Here’d the Windows version:

And the version from Jimmy Kimmel Live:

And of course the version that fills your eyes with ads:

And the one where the guy gets hit by a car:

And the one that ends with the guy unzipping his pants as he gets ready for a ChatRoulette session:

    And the “meme glasses” one:

Here’s a picture of Google’s own Matt Cutts from mid-2012:

Here’s one of Brin seemingly making those around him uncomfortable:

Here’s a later story about a reporter from The Verge wearing Glass and making the Palins uncomfortable.

Also in mid 2012, we looked at the short film Sight, which showed us a dark side of Glass-like technology:

Google tried really hard to pitch Glass as fashionable.

    Remember the Fashion Week collaboration:

Newt Gingrich did his part to up the cool factor, as did Michelle Bachmann:

And Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan:

…but the fashion thing never quite panned out. Even Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt recognized this obstacle two years before Project Glass was announced.

“I’m not sure you really want to walk through town with these odd glasses on, you know, looking like an airforce jetfighter or something,” he said in an interview. “But I’m sure people will. I mean, as I was driving by here, I saw people riding their Segways, you know, looking like normal pedestrians.”

That’s about sixteen minutes into the following video.

And when has someone riding a Segway ever looked like a normal pedestrian?

The great “White Men Wearing Google Glass” Tumblr emerged in 2013, and you could hardly look at anything Google Glass-related on the internet without running into the iconic Robert Scoble in the shower image.

    robert scoble google glass shower

    robert scoble google glass shower

Even Scoble eventually came to a stunning realization about Glass:

    The Ridicule Continues…

Shortly after that, Saturday Night Live had a sketch making fun of Glass. That was also around the time when one CEO made headlines after saying that Google Glass would “definitely get someone punched in the face. Scott Heiferman from Meetup said:

“It basically means that you’re gonna be an asshole. It’s easier and easier for you to ignore real people around you, and sometimes that’s totally fine, but on this relentless pursuit – the train is barreling down, and saying, distraction is just a fact of life. We have to consider what it means.”

“And I’m not saying like, ‘Let’s sit back and ponder the nature of culture, and the future of society,’ in that way. I’m just saying, you gotta punch someone in the face wearing Google Glasses.”

In fact, the term “Glasshole” became widely used. Google actually had to put out guidelines on how to not be one.

Mid-2013 really saw a major revival of Google Glass ridicule. Here’s a video that came out showing how ridiculous people might look taking pictures with the device:

Even by about six months later, Conan O’Brien was doing Glass bits.

    Other Problems

Then there were the driving ban obstacles, not to mention the various venues that wouldn’t allow you to wear the devices (movie theaters, strip clubs, casinos, restaurants, bars, etc.).

The bar thing even got so bad that one San Francisco bar decided to capitalize on it by giving free drinks to “outcast” glassholes.

Here’s someone that got a ticket for wearing Glass while driving:

Granted, the court did eventually dismiss the ticket, evan as lawmakers continued to push for driving bans.

A guy who wore Glass at a movie was hassled by the feds.

Of course many were always put off by the privacy implications of the device. In 2013, we saw the device jailbroken and used to remove all indication that the device was recording video. Congress eventually became concerned.

Words like these from Google’s own Glass FAQ probably didn’t help anything either:

Glass isn’t for everyone. Like when wearing glasses, some people may feel eye strain or get a headache. If you’ve had Lasik surgery, ask your doctor about risks of eye impact damage before using Glass. Don’t let children under 13 use Glass as it could harm developing vision. Also, kids might break Glass or hurt themselves, and Google’s terms of service don’t permit those under 13 to register a Google account.

The Glass price tag should not be overlooked. A 2013 survey found that few were willing to fork over the $1,500 Google wanted. In fact, $500 was pushing it for a lot of people. Most who responded with interest in the device were willing to pay $200 to $300.

That’s not even getting into the price of accessories:

In May, 2014, Google finally started letting anyone in the U.S. buy Google Glass. How many people have you seen wearing the device around since then? Besides on the Internet. Zero? Yeah, me too.

After that, Google hired a fashion marketer to once again try to up the cool factor. We see how well that’s worked.

This past June, Glass became the object of ridicule once again in a Daily Show segment:

Then the world got to watch old people be confused by the device.

In July, Glass founder Babak Parviz went to go work for Amazon. In September, a study warned us over the dangers of texting and driving with Google Glass. In October, we learned that there is such a thing as Google Glass addiction, which can lead to involuntary temple tapping.

By last month, the tech blogosphere was all but proclaiming Google Glass dead in its current form, but that the technology behind it could find new and useful applications, particularly in work settings. From the sound of it, that’s still likely the type of stuff we’re going to see from Glass in the future. Just what that entails remains to be seen.

Despite all of the ridicule Glass has endured, you’ve got to give Google credit for trying something interesting and different. Even if it doesn’t catch on in the sense that people everywhere are wearing it all the time, we’ve seen plenty of interesting use cases across various industries. We’ve even seen it used in a brain surgery. Hate and laugh all you want, but Glass shouldn’t be considered a total bust, and Google is probably only just getting started with it. Don’t forget about the contact lenses.

  • CES: Sony’s New $1,100 Walkman Can Soon Be Yours (Complete With Outdated Android Jelly Bean)

Sony unveiled its new Walkman at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It will reportedly cost just north of $1,100. Seems pretty reasonable.

Business Insider says Sony hasn’t set price for the device yet, but both The Verge and CBS News are reporting about $1,120.

The Walkman NW-ZX2 is due out in the spring, and runs Android Jelly Bean, the third most recent build of Google’s operating system. Sold yet?

Price tag and outdated operating system aside, those who have had a chance to fiddle with the device at the show do seem pretty impressed by it. Everyone is noting that it is strictly for hard core audiophiles, and at that price it would have to be, wouldn’t it?

So what’s so great about it? It’s made for playing high resolution audio, minimally compressing files for optimum sound quality. BI’s Lisa Eadicicco, who says she was blown away by the device, recounts:

Sony described it to us like this — imagine you have a sheet of paper, and you need to give it to someone 20 feet away from you without moving closer to them. Simply throwing the sheet of paper wont work, you’d need to crumple it up into a ball. But, once you do that, the paper becomes wrinkled and its quality is compromised. That’s how compression works with audio and video files, too.

Here’s what Sony itself has to say about the device:

Experience High-Resolution audio like never before with the Walkman NW-ZX2 which can reproduce master quality recordings just as the artists originally intended. The S-Master™ HX digital amplifier, uniquely developed for Hi-Res audio playback, reduces distortion and noise while reproducing wide frequency response for a clearer acoustic experience. It is also equipped with DSEE HX™ technology, allowing streaming sources which are not Hi-Res quality to be upscaled to provide higher quality sound.

The NW- ZX2 supports digital music files up to 192 kHz/24 bit and compatible file formats are MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, AIFF, WAV and ALAC including DSD[1]. It also comes with 128GB of built-in memory, as well as micro SD card slot, Wi-Fi and a large capacity Lithium-ion battery that provides up to 60-hours[2] of music playback per charge.

Sporting a frame with rounded sides carved out of aluminum alloy, the Walkman NW-ZX2 features a striking design and highly rigid case. Adoption of the gold-plated copperplate in the structure has resulted in an extremely stable ground due to its low electric resistivity. The powerful bass and the improved sense of stereo have been realized due to a number of audio components , such as the enhancement of power supply by using of electric double layer capacitors , OS-CON and large capacity Li-ion battery. The other refinements that also contribute to the high-quality sound are thick-film copper-layer PCBs, OFC cables and high-purity lead-free solder. These enable the NW-ZX2 to achieve a higher sound resolution by reducing the impedance.

The Verge gives us an up close and personal look, though I don’t see any way to convince someone about the quality of this device without having them actually listen to it.

Still, we’ll take everyone’s word for it. It probably does sound pretty good. Of course you have to download your audio files in high resolution, so it’s probably not going to be incredibly remarkable for your existing music library, or streaming from services like Spotify.
