  • LG G2 Smartphone Officially Announced

LG Electronics today finally revealed its latest flagship Android smartphone, the LG G2 – not to be confused with the (now ancient, in tech terms) G2 smartphone released by HTC three years ago. LG’s device had been much teased in the weeks leading up to today’s announcement event in New York.

The G2 will have a 5.2-inch screen with a full HD resolution of 1080 x 1920. Its processor is a 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 and it comes with 2GB of RAM. It’s rear-facing camera is 13MP, and its front-facing one is 2.1MP. The G2 comes with either 32GB or 16GB of storage and comes in a black or white case. The phone will be running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, though LG has also included its own software.

One unique feature of the device is its button placement. The G2 has no side buttons. Instead, LG has put volume and power buttons on the back of the smartphone, just below the rear-facing camera. The company claims that this feature will lead to more “control” and fewer dropped smartphones.

“Our definition of innovation today is technology that truly resonates with consumers,” said Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG. “We have always listened to and learned from consumers in pursuit of innovation. We took these insights to new heights in developing LG G2, the most exciting and ambitious mobile phone in our company’s history.”

The G2 will begin rolling out across world markets starting today. South Korea will be the first market to get the device, with North America, Europe, and “other key markets” getting the device sometime over the next eight weeks, depending on country and mobile provider.

"T-Mobile ignited the spark that set the Android world ablaze two years ago with the launch of the world’s first Android-powered mobile phone, the T-Mobile G1, which remains an important milestone for both T-Mobile and the Android operating system," said T-Mobile USA chief technology and innovation officer, Cole Brodman. "Now, with the launch of the T-Mobile G2, we are re-teaming with our partners at Google and HTC to provide T-Mobile customers with another first — the first Android smartphone designed to deliver 4G speeds on our new network."

"One of the advantages of an open platform is the opportunity for developers to create rich mobile experiences and seamlessly get those experiences into the hands of consumers," said Google VP, Engineering, Andy Rubin. "From new services, such as Voice Actions, to mobile applications, developer-led Android innovation is flourishing. On Android Market alone, the number of applications available to consumers has grown from just 50 applications two years ago to more than 80,000 applications today."

"Two years ago, HTC and T-Mobile worked together to deliver the world’s first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1. From that start, Android has grown to be the leading smartphone platform in the U.S., and one of the most popular globally," said HTC CEO Peter Chou. "With today’s announcement of the G2, HTC and T-Mobile are once again bringing a breakthrough Android product to market."

Current T-Mobile customers will get exclusive access to preorder the G2 starting later this month.
  • The G2 to Deliver “Tight Integration” with Google Services

A teaser page for G2 from T-Mobile was discovered. It says, "The T-Mobile G2 will deliver tight integration with Google services and break new ground as the first smartphone designed to run at 4G speeds on our new HSPA+ network. In the coming weeks, we’ll share more details about the G2 and offer exclusive first access to current T-Mobile customers."

The G1 was of course the first Android phone, which launched 2 years ago.

Speaking of Microsoft, Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7 will feature Bing Maps. Bing’s Chris Pendleton writes:

With the impending release of Windows Phone 7, I’ve been working with both the Windows Phone and XNA teams on creating experiences that will involve Bing Maps. As a preview, Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst is the first game to be shown and announced to use an XNA control with Bing Maps for Windows Phone 7. Hot. The game uses Bing Maps as a backdrop for an attack and tank-like game for blowing stuff up (or protecting stuff). Here are a couple screenshots used from within the game.

Speaking of Bing, it’s still in third place in the U.S. search market according to data released by Hitwise today. However, Yahoo has begun putting Bing into its search results this week, so that should be significantly different next month.
