  • Stevie Nicks on American Horror Story: Coven

Stevie Nicks on American Horror Story: Coven

The queen of one of rock’s most influential bands joins forces with one of television’s most popular shows to entertain and spook audiences everywhere. That’s right, it’s finally time for Stevie Nicks to make her much-talked about appearance on the third season of American Horror Story: Coven.

It’s true there’s been a lot of buzz about Nicks, but surprisingly the talk has mostly been generated on the show. Lily Rabe’s character Misty Day, a bayou, swamp witch obsessed with the band and the head diva, constantly references how Nicks is the “supreme” witch. Fleetwood Mac’s music plays the soundtrack to almost every scene that Rabe’s character is featured in giving Nick’s eventual arrival even more buildup.

But fans of the show and band have won’t have to wait much longer for the grand appearance of Miss Nicks because the “twirling” front-woman is the guest of honor for tonight’s episode appropriately titled, “The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks.”

Jessica Lange’s character (Fiona) calls upon Nicks’ in an effort to out Day as the next Supreme.

So what did Nicks’ have to say about her time on the set with some of television’s scariest, most badass, witchy-women?

“I felt like I had entered into the coolest club ever,” she said. ” Everybody was just so supportive of me because they knew that’s not what I do.”

Nicks’ even dished on Lange saying, “she is scary, right? Oh my God. And she’s beautiful. She moves like a cat. And she’s always in beautiful black, not the cheap black–it’s Chanel, all the good stuff. She’s totally stylish. And, uh, let’s not forget, she’s also crazy.”

Nicks’ even went on to discuss her early career and accusations of being a witch.

“In the beginning of my career, the whole idea that some wacky, creepy people were writing, “You’re a witch, you’re a witch!” was so arresting,” she said. And there I am like, “No, I’m not! I just wear black because it makes me look thinner you idiots.” I stopped wearing black for like a year. Then I was just like, “OK, just bring it freaks. I’m not going to wear apricot.”

She then said, “So when all this came along, I was like, “what, really, am I going to turn this down because of all that past nonsense?” I’m way too old and I’ve been through way too much to give up an opportunity like this. I’m fearless. You have to be fearless in life.”

You can catch American Horror Story: Coven on FX tonight at 10 pm.

  • American Horror Story: Golden Globe Nominations

American Horror Story is in it’s third season, scaring audiences with it’s delightfully creepy take on witchcraft and voodoo in The Coven. With lead witch, Jessica Lange terrorizing every week, it’s no surprise the 64-year-old actress received her second nomination for her work in the show.

But this year, it’s an even bigger honor for Lange since she went from being nominated for Best Supporting Actress (in which she won) to a nomination for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie.

Who is Lange competing against this year? It looks like she’ll be up against Helena Bonham Cater, Burton & Taylor, Rebecca Ferguson, The White Queen, Helen Mirren, Phil Spector and lastly, Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake.

Along with the Best Actress nomination, The Coven was nominated for Best TV Movie or Miniseries along. The competition for the award falls between Behind the Candelabra, Dancing on the Edge, Top of the Lake and The White Queen.

  • ‘American Horror Story’ Season 2 (Asylum) Gets Netflix Release Date

‘American Horror Story’ Season 2 (Asylum) Gets Netflix Release Date

We now have a Netflix release date for American Horror Story: Season 2 (Asylum). You’ll be able to stream it on December 7th (yep, tomorrow).

Fans of the show have been eagerly anticipating its return to Netflix, even as the third season only has two episodes left on FX. Luckily, since each season is a separate story, it should make little to no difference which order you watch them in.

We had initially speculated that Netflix might make Asylum available for streaming in November, as the first season became available in November of 2012. Netflix added last year’s season of Sons of Anarchy (another FX show) in October, a year after it added the previous season, so it seemed reasonable to expect similar treatment of American Horror Story.

This turned out to not quite be the case.Even before we had a hard release date, we learned last month that AHS would return to Netflix in December.

In case you’re interested, Netflix has also added the eighth season of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to its streaming line-up.

  • Sons of Anarchy Kills Major Character

Sons of Anarchy Kills Major Character

Before you read on, be wary that this article contains major spoilers and plot point discussion for the FX series Sons of Anarchy. If you haven’t seen the show, or the most recent episode, I recommend you stop reading… now.

Leading into this week, the boys of SAMCRO were prepared to end their gun-dealing relationship with the real IRA by liberating ex-president Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) from an in-transit prison truck. Morrow was going to take over position of “supervisor of Irish gun distribution” on the West Coast.

Well, that didn’t really go as planned. When the Sons liberated Clay, they executed IRA gun-dealer Galen O’Shea, and staged a firefight in an airport office, where a slow-paced scene showcased the emotional execution of Morrow’s character.

EntertainmentWeekly caught up with both showrunner Kurt Sutter and Ron Perlman.

When asked about the decision to kill Clay now, Sutter said, “Ultimately he made choices that hurt a lot of other people, that came back to hurt him. And for me, the betrayal of Gemma at the end of last season was the thing that broke him. Once she broke that connection, once she said okay, you’re too despicable for me and to the point where she betrayed him, then it really became the beginning of the end for him.”

Sutter added, “I didn’t suddenly expect people to turn around and have compassion for this guy, though I think a lot of people were wondering, oh, yes, it’s all a plan. It’s all a play. He’s got something else up his sleeve because that’s who Clay is… He really does want to do the right thing by Gemma. And so, that by [the 10th episode] when you think okay, they’ve done everything they could to keep this guy alive and they’re going to keep him alive … when you have some sense that maybe you don’t hate Clay as much as you used to … that’s when we kill Clay.”

Perlman likened the role to that of Claudius in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a story Sutter has admitted he borrowed from. “Claudius doesn’t make it to Act 5,” Perlman said, “so I was ready for this.”

When the interviewer asked Perlman about the Hamlet connection, he said “Anything you’re going to assume about Sons of Anarchy is pure speculation. We’ve already seen that Hamlet is the superstructure … the guy who kills the king and marries the queen and takes over the crown. The stepson who’s trying to put all this together with the help of these voices that are visiting him in the form of the manuscript.”

“When you put on that crown, some sh– happens and it ain’t pretty and it ain’t ordered and it almost controls you,” Perlman said of Jax’s ascension. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the seventh season is going to really shine a light on the price that Jax Teller plays, simply because he’s risen to this level of power.”

  • “American Horror Story” Picked Up For 4th Season

“American Horror Story” has been a huge hit for FX since its inaugural season in 2011, but the third installment–“Coven”–has already proven itself to be the biggest season so far, and it’s only four episodes in. Now, it’s been announced that the show will indeed be back for a fourth cycle, and Jessica Lange will return with it.

Because of the show’s unusual format–each season is it’s own series, with different characters, plotlines, and actors–it was a question worth asking at the beginning if fans would keep tuning in. But tune in they have, and the show and it’s actors have received 34 Emmy nominations since 2011.

“Put simply, Ryan Murphy is a master television producer,” FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said. “Every year, they create a riveting and brilliant new miniseries. AHS: Coven is the best yet, and I have no doubt that the next installment will be even better.”

Lange, who has starred in all three installments, says that the current season brings in a little levity after the second cycle, which got pretty dark with tales of depraved nuns and torture.

“I think Ryan was maybe even surprised by how fast and how dark it got last year,” Lange said. “Of course, that’s right up my alley. I like that a lot. But I think this season was a deliberate attempt to lighten it and add some humor. And I’m not against humor; my sensibilities just always tend toward the more tragic or the darker.”

As for the actress’s role in the next cycle, mum’s the word; Murphy isn’t giving anything away except to say that it’s something Lange has wanted to do for a long time.

“I can’t say anything. All I’ll say is, Jessica Lange has always wanted to play a Marlene Dietrich figure, and now she gets to,” he teased.

  • ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ Premiere Gets Director Commentary

American Horror Story returned to FX last week with the debut of its third season, Coven. The season follows the series’ established pattern of telling a different story from the previous one. This time it’s about witches.

Early reactions have been pretty positive (having Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett probably helps).

The official American Horror Story YouTube channel has released a new seven-minute video of director/co-executive producer Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and director of photography Michael Gol talking about the first episode, titled “Bitchcraft”.

The second episode debuts on FX tonight.

  • ‘Damages’ Season 5 (The FInal Season) Gets A Netflix Release Date

Netflix is about to add the fifth and final season of FX’s legal thriller Damages to its streaming catalog. The other four seasons are already available, so subscribers will be able to watch the entire series.

Season 5 will become available on October 14th.

Here’s the Netflix description for the show, just in case you’ve never watched it:

Emmy winner Glenn Close is riveting as lawyer extraordinaire Patty Hewes, whose intellect is as boundless as her morals are skimpy. With her devoted colleague, Tom Shayes, and conflicted protégé, Ellen Parsons, Patty rules the New York legal scene.

Netflix has been adding a lot of TV content lately, with more on the way. This past week, they also released the final season of Gossip Girl.

  • When Will ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ Season 8 Hit Netflix?

Update: Season 8 is now available for streaming. American Horror Story: Season 2 is due in December.

With the ninth season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia already in progress, fans are no doubt wondering when the last season is going to hit Netflix. We haven’t heard a date for when it will be available for streaming yet, and it’s already out on DVD.

In fact, Netflix currently offers it through its DVD service:

    Sunny on DVD

While we can only speculate, it seems like a December release is likely at this point, considering that Netflix debuted the other seasons in December last year.

Netflix does continue to add streaming content from FX. It recently added seasons of Louie and The League, for example.

Still, fans continue to wait for Netflix to catch up on the last seasons of Sunny, American Horror Story and Sons of Anarchy. Perhaps lending more weight to the speculation of the November addition of Sunny: Season 8, these other two shows have also yet to reach their anniversaries of prior season Netflix releases.

Season 4 of Sons hit Netflix in late October last year, with the first season of American Horror Story appearing in late November. If these shows follow suit this year, it will certainly give us a better idea of what to expect next year, provided unforeseen circumstances don’t change anything.

Either way, Sunny fans can expect to see a McPoyle brother in Netflix’s House of Cards early next year.

  • When Will ‘American Horror Story’ Season 2 (Asylum) Hit Netflix?

With the third season of American Horror Story (Coven) on the way, fans are wondering when the last season is going to hit Netflix. We haven’t heard a date for when it will be available for streaming yet, but it does come to DVD on October 8th, and Netflix confirms that it too will have the discs available on that date.

You might think that we could expect Season 2 to become available for streaming at the same time, but that remains to be seen. Netflix has been a little late getting some of the FX shows this season. It still doesn’t have the last seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Sons of Anarchy available for streaming, though they’re both currently available on DVD, and the new seasons have already started.

They are still getting FX content, however. Last year’s season of The League recently made its Netflix streaming debut, and the latest season of Louie just became available.

I would imagine we’ll be seeing American Horror Story: Asylum hitting Netflix streaming sometime within the next couple months. Keep in mind, the second season was already underway on FX last year before Netflix announced the availability of Season 1 in November.

Season 3 will debut on FX on October 9th. Here’s star Angela Bassett talking to Arsenio Hall:

  • American Psycho Series Being Developed At FX

American Psycho wasn’t for everyone, but you can’t argue that it is a cult classic… but does it really need to be a television series?

It’s being reported that FX is developing a series that will act as the direct sequel to American Psycho. If you’re wondering about that Mila Kunis sequel, well like everyone else they’re acting as if it never happened. The series will supposedly focus on Christian Bale’s Patrick Bateman, with some minor changes to the setting of the story.

“The drama series fast forwards from the late 1980s, when the movie was set, to present day. It will feature serial killer Patrick Bateman, now in his mid-50’s but as outrageous and lethal as ever, taking on a protégé in a sadistic social experiment who will become every bit his equal — a next generation American Psycho.”

With series like Hannibal and Bates Motel doing well, it only makes sense for FX to scoop up American Psycho and try to take it to series.

Below you can view some of the more memorable scenes from the movie (viewer discretion is advised):

  • ‘Sons of Anarchy’: Robocop Joins For Sixth Ride

Sons of Anarchy is one of those television shows you just can’t look away from. Writer, producer, and creator Kurt Sutter was a writer for FX’s hit cop drama The Shield, which effectively cleaned house each year at the Emmy’s, so it was hardly surprising when the retiring of Michael Chiklis’ anti-cop Vic Mackey brought a new series of twisted characters to traverse our televisions in search of fortune and glory. Sons has certainly done that over the years, and while the season five ratings were strong enough in the target demographic, season six is shaping up to knock it out of the park.

Peter Weller, known for his iconic voice and portrayal of Robocop in the late ’80s, will be joining the fray as a former cop who works at the Stockton port, the Hollywood Reporter says. Already a featured director of several episodes in the series as well as episodes of Monk and Hawaii Five-O, Weller makes the opposite journey of Adam Arkin, who joined the cast as a white supremacist character and eventually became a featured director.

AMENDED: As to where the plot of the new season might take the enigmatic motorcycle gang, we can expect the story to center around Jax solidifying political control within the club for his presidency, Tara’s experiences after being imprisoned by the police for Gemma’s manipulation, the expected fallback from Bobby’s resignation as vice-president, and possibly a final end to Clay Morrow. The recently released season six promo video seem to hint at an excessively violent season, and Sutter himself has been quoted as saying upcoming episodes will be some of the “most violent” in the history of the show, a bold claim indeed.

If you’re interested in watching the latest episode of Sons of Anarchy as soon as it airs, season six will premiere on September 10 at 10 P.M. EST on FX.

  • “The Bridge” Pilot Gets Rave Reviews

“The Bridge” Pilot Gets Rave Reviews

“The Bridge” premiered last night on FX, and those who watched have positive things to say about it.

The new drama, which focuses on two detectives investigating a series of murders near the Texas/Mexico border, will have a lot of surprises in the first season. Star Diane Kruger talked recently about the show and about her role in it, which is something we haven’t seen on television before: a lead character with Asperger’s.

“We decided early on that we were not going to label Sonya’s condition in the show, which I think is very important and very interesting, because we didn’t want her condition to be her defining character trait,” Kruger said. “I thought that was really brave and it’s pretty ballsy in my eyes, because in the first episode… she’s so odd and you don’t really know what it is that’s off. And I think it will be great to get the opportunity for the next 13 episodes to see her [nuances] and her layers and to understand a lot of her back story that has made her the person that she is today.”

The show has some pretty dark subject matter and is very character driven, focusing on the relationship between Kruger’s character, Sonya, and fellow investigator Marco Ruiz (played by Demian Bichir).

“I think that the two characters, Demian — Marco Ruiz and Sonya Cross, are an unusual combination of detectives. The show’s not your usual cop show. It’s a very character driven show, and you think the show’s about one thing and then it goes in directions that will be quite unexpected,” she said.”The setting between Mexico and America is unique and I don’t think [it] has been done on television before. And I think the backdrop of the unsolved crimes as the missing girls from Juarez, the relationship between America and Mexico, is very interesting to see and shine a light on.”

From what viewers are saying on Twitter today, it seems like the pilot was a bit laid back compared to what we’ll see in later episodes.

  • Selma Blair And Charlie Sheen Feuding On Anger Management

If the rumors concerning Selma Blair and her role on FX’s Anger Management turn to fact, the actress’ relationship with Charlie Sheen has deteriorated well beyond the feud stage. A report at TMZ indicates the two are “at WAR (their capitalization, not mine)” and, in fact, Blair may be out of a job. At least if Sheen has his winning way. With that in mind, allow me to get this out of the way: so much for Sheen (and Blair) managing their anger, right? Bad jokes aside, it appears as if Sheen has a hard time getting along with, well, anyone for long periods of time.

Granted, in this case, it appears as if Blair started the mess by saying Sheen was “a menace to work with,” and that the actor has poor work habits. The report indicates she told this to the executive team behind the series, and, as is the Hollywood way, word got back to Sheen, which lead to the following predictable reaction from the actor:

But sources close to Sheen tell us the actor did more than just complain … he told everyone HE FIRED SELMA altogether — although it’s unclear how official it was.

Charlie then made it clear to “AM” honchos … if Selma shows up to set Monday — when the show is scheduled to shoot — he’ll refuse to work.

TMZ goes onto say that their sources indicate the bosses at FX are hoping this goes away. Oddly enough, the news about the Blair/Sheen blow up comes just six days after the actress posted the following on Twitter:

I suppose it’s worth noting that Sheen did not respond to Blair’s tweet, and if the news of this fallout is true, it’s doubtful he will anytime soon. Whatever the case, I hope someone tell him to stop hitting the “Return” key when he wants to make a new line in a tweet. Twitter’s word wrap works quite effectively. An example:

  • American Horror Story On Netflix Now A Reality

Netflix announced today that American Horror Story is now available for streaming in the U.S. That would be the first season, of course.

“It’s Thanksgiving week, so what’s a blog post without giving thanks for certain things in your life?” writes Allie Goss, Director of Content Acquisition, on the Netflix blog. “I’m thankful for the typical: family, friends, good health, and my job (this is not because this is my employer’s blog, although I figure, it can’t hurt). I’m also thankful for the less essential, yet still appreciated things like new albums from The Killers and Mumford & Sons, seasonal gingerbread lattes, and incredible TV shows like American Horror Story, which is available today in the US!”

“We’re thrilled to bring our US subscribers FX’s hit show, American Horror Story!” she adds. “For those of you not familiar with the critically-acclaimed show, we know you’ll enjoy watching the Harmon family as they move from Boston to Los Angeles seeking relief from their messy pasts, only to find out that they have taken up residence in a house haunted by its former residents. Gripping and scary, this present-day story stars Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Taissa Farmiga, and many others including a performance by Jessica Lange as Constance Langdon, which earned her Golden Globe, SAG, and Emmy awards!”

The show joins other FX shows on the Netflix line-up, like The League, Sons Of Anarchy and Rescue Me.

The second season of American Horror Story is currently underway on FX. I would assume that that season will come to Netflix in about a year (maybe ahead of the start of the third season, if we’re lucky).

Goss also reminds us that Netflix original series House Of Cards will soon be available. It’s coming on February 1. Watch the trailer here.

  • Sons Of Anarchy Season 4 Hits Netflix Instant

Sons Of Anarchy Season 4 has finally made its way to Netflix Instant for your streaming pleasure (in the U.S.). This might have been more useful a couple months ago, as Season 5 premiered on September 11th, but better late than never.

In a post on its official blog, Netflix Director of Content Acquisition, Allie Goss, writes:

We first brought you Season 1 in 2011, introducing Jax and the rest of SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original) crew to Netflix in this Hamlet-influenced drama (yes, that’s Shakespeare’s Hamlet). Since then, existing fans have been reliving the drama by watching their favorite episodes, while others are discovering the motorcycle-outlaw adventure for the first time, catching up on Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3. Whichever group you fall into, we’re glad you’re enjoying the ride!

All 14 episodes from the fourth season are now available to stream. Of course, seasons 1-3 are still available as well, so fans old and new will have hours of SOA to indulge in at their convenience.

Netflix revealed last week that it had 25.1 million domestic streaming members in Q3 (20% more than it had the year before).

  • Russell Brand Tackles American Culture On “Brand X”

Russell Brand may be a British import, but he’s certainly dominated U.S. headlines in the past couple of years. Between his true tales of drug fueled debauchery on comedy stages, his outrageous roles in box office hits “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him To The Greek”, and his brief, tabloid-fodder marriage to pop star Katy Perry, he’s kept us captivated for a while now. And that’s not even touching the fact that he’s brash, outspoken, and highly opinionated.

Which is why we love him

Now, Brand is set to host his own television show, “Brand X With Russell Brand”, which premieres this Thursday on FX. Since it’s a late-night show, and since it’s ballsy FX, there will no doubt be some of Brand’s salty language on display, but the real entertainment will come from seeing Brand try to break down American culture and pop culture.

“Remember Mork?” asked Brand.” “He had to understand he was an extraterrestrial. He was trying to, I think, get a green card, and essentially that’s what I’m doing.”

FX has ordered six episodes of the show, which is taped before a live studio audience. Knowing what they know about Brand thus far–which is very little outside of tabloid headlines–audiences might have a pre-conceived notion about what the show will bring. But Brand says he can’t worry about everyone’s ideas.

“All I want is for people to be happy. I don’t mind what people think about me. What people think in their minds is not my business. They have to live in there. But I listen to others. You must be humble. It’s very important to have humility. There are lots of people with very informed perspectives. I have a tendency to fly off. I’m tangential and I’m also narcissistic, so I have to be very careful, otherwise I start to get messianic complexes.”

  • Denise Richards Discusses Charlie Sheen, Anger Management

Denise Richards, ex-wife to volatile star Charlie Sheen, has accepted a role on the former “Two and a Half Men” star’s brand new show “Anger Management”. Here’s the kicker: She’s playing his love interest. Given that Sheen was outrageously enraged by Richards not too long ago, it’s strange that she would want to participate in anything involving her temperamental ex-husband. However, when you need work, I suppose any job will do.

Cynicism aside, I suppose it’s good that the two are attempting to put the past behind him. However, the next time Richards does an interview where she endlessly complains about Sheen’s behavior, I will roll my eyes and say “That’s what you get!” to whoever happens to be standing next to me at the time. No joke.

“Charlie came to me and asked me to do an episode on the show,” Richards explained to the television show Extra. “I saw a sneak peek of the first episode and it’s really funny. I did a table read last week. I play a love interest to my ex-husband.”

Regarding the duo’s tumultuous relationship: “He’s in a really good place. Everything is good. He’s been very focused on our children and on his job.” For the sake of their kids, here’s hoping that positive vibe continues into the future.

“Anger Management” has its FX debut on June 28th.

  • Hulu Should Be Better at What it Does

Hulu Should Be Better at What it Does

Late last week, a deal between FOX and DISH Network came to an end, leaving DISH Network subscribers without FX, FOX Sports, and the National Geographic Channel. FOX raised their rates and DISH didn’t want to pay. While the two companies continue negotiations, some of us wonder how we are going to watch the shows that we regularly enjoy.

There are at least 5 shows I regularly watch on FX, and I have DISH Network, so naturally, this presents a problem for me. 3 of these shows are currently in mid-season. Now, I get to figure out where to watch the next episodes. My first thought was Hulu. They have FOX and (FOX-owned) FX content. I remember watching full episodes of "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia" there some time ago. I remember that they even had episodes a week after they aired. I can deal with that if I have to.

Too bad they don’t do that anymore.

Looking at that show’s page now, there are no full episodes available, let alone the newest ones. Now the show’s page on Hulu says they’re able to post new episodes 30 days after they air, starting later this month. The same goes for "The League". The Same goes for the "Sons of Anarchy". Awesome. Thanks Hulu. Thanks FOX.

    The League on Hulu

AdAge has an interesting and timely article about a speech given by Hulu CEO Jason Kilar this week. According to the article, he basically told the "big media" to either serve consumers or lose them. AdAge’s Nate Ives reports:

That’s particularly true because media consumption is basically an optional activity, he said. It’s habitual and important for most of us, he argued, but no one’s going to actually die if they don’t see the latest episode of "30 Rock." And within media, as the magazine publishers in the room were well aware, mushrooming options mean you’ve got to serve consumers or lose them. It’s no sure thing that a young person’s going to watch "The Amazing Race" instead of visiting Facebook. "Content is discretionary, so you better focus on convenience," he told the audience.

Convenience. What a concept. It seems like FOX is going out of its way to make it as inconvenient as possible for me to see the shows I watch. Meanwhile, DISH claims to be keeping up the fight

"We regret that FOX Networks, the owner of some Regional Sports Networks, FX and National Geographic Channel, removed their channels from the DISH Network line-up," the company says.  "FOX has demanded a rate increase of more than 50%. An increase this large would force DISH Network to pass these costs on to our customers, which we are unwilling to do during these tough economic times."

"DISH Network will continue to work tirelessly for a fair agreement in order to bring these channels back at the earliest possible time."

Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll bring the channels back in time to see episodes that haven’t even aired on Hulu yet, so we’ll either have to DVR them while we wait to be caught up.

By the way, none of these shows are even available on Hulu Plus for $9.99 a month.
