  • Insomniac’s Fuse Will Be Released On May 28

Ever since Insomniac changed Overstrike into Fuse, it seems that interest in the title has dropped somewhat. The game still looks like a fun shooter with interesting weapons, but it ditched the colorful and humorous style shown in the original trailer.

The new trailer – dubbed “Fable’s Vision” – doesn’t really do much to sell people on Fuse beyond its weapons. In fact, it seems that the title only has that going for it, just like Insomniac’s Resistance franchise. The games are fun enough, but they lack the creativity and fun that have always been a hallmark of the developer’s Ratchet and Clank franchise.

Still, what do I know? Insomniac could knock it out of the park with Fuse. It could present a serious story that’s actually worth paying attention while having the fun gunplay mechanics of its other franchises. It’s just that the trailers thus far haven’t really inspired much confidence. It doesn’t help that the game continues to look more and more like a Borderlands clone that takes itself far too seriously.

Fuse will be released on May 28 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Fuse Delayed to Spring or Early Summer

EA‘s third quarter earnings revealed lower revenue, but a lower net loss than the previous year. Aside from blaming its revenue woes on its cynical Call of Duty: Warfighter project, EA also had a few other announcements it could reveal now that its holiday earnings have been released.

The most notable announcement is that Fuse has been delayed to the first quarter of EA’s fiscal year 2014. This means the game, instead of being released in March as planned, will be delayed at least one month, and possibly as many as three. From EA’s prepared statement:

Ted Price and the Insomniac Studio are putting a lot of polish into their new game Fuse. The extra work delivers a big payout for players and Fuse will be released in Q1, our Spring quarter.

Fuse is a new sci-fi shooter the Insomniac is working on for EA. A trailer released last December revealed that the game is taking cues from both Borderlands and Gears of War. Insomniac is the studio that has developed quite a few popular PlayStation series, including Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance: Fall of Man.

The Fuse delay could also be related to EA’s announcement that it will stop making Medal of Honor games. As part of that reveal, EA stated that it has a plan to “bring year-over-year continuity to our shooter offerings.” Here’s hoping EA isn’t forcing Insomniac to change the ending of Fuse to leave more room for yearly sequels or spinoffs.

  • New Fuse Trailer Explains Character’s “Rules”

EA and Insomniac Games today released the latest trailer for Fuse, a team-based sci-fi shooter set to launch sometime in March. The trailer is titled “Dalton Rules” and goes over one of the main character’s three tongue-in-cheek “rules” that he follows as an Overstrike agent.

In Fuse, players will play as one of four operatives that dive in over their heads when a mission to stop a rogue paramilitary force goes wrong. According to Insomniac, a “full-on global arms race over Fuse – a powerfull but volatile alien substance” begins, and the operative are caught right in the middle of it.

Judging from the trailer, the game is part Borderlands, part Gears of War, and wholly an Insomniac game. The studio is famous for the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance franchises, so expect Fuse to be filled with cinematic set pieces and creative weaponry. Also, the operative characters (or at least Dalton) appear to have fully realized personalities, which is a rare feature in the shooter genre.
