  • Firefighter Funeral: Servicemen Nationwide Pay Respect to Deceased Firemen

The memorial processions for two fallen firefighters who died in a nine-alarm fire last week brought together firemen, police officers, and other civil servicemen from across the nation.

The wake for Boston firefighter Michael R. Kennedy, 33, was held Wednesday at the P.E. Murray Funeral Home in West Roxbury.

The streets were lined with thousands of first responders to pay respects to Kennedy and his fellow colleague Lt. Edward J. Walsh, Jr., who also died in the fire.

The funeral for 43-year-old Walsh was held earlier Wednesday in his hometown of Watertown.

Servicemen as far as Costa Rica came to support the Walsh family.

During the funeral, family and friends stood up to recall some of their fondest memories of Walsh.

“He was a born leader who did not regard himself as a hero,” said President Richard Paris of the Boston Firefighters Union.

“He was destined to do great things and he did,” his sister Kathy Malone shared with the congregation.

“Let us be inspired by his example,” Mayor Marty Walsh also added.

The service ended with the ringing of the bell, which is a traditional symbol for the death of a fireman.

Many of the servicemen who attended Walsh’s funeral procession also made their way to Kennedy’s wake service.

The wake was scheduled for 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. but started at 4 p.m. due to the large number of people in attendance.

Kennedy’s funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Holy Name in West Roxbury.

    A report about Kennedy’s wake:

The pair’s unfortunate death occurred on March 26 when they became trapped in the basement of an old building located in the historic Back Bay neighborhood.

Kennedy was a former Marine Sergeant who enjoyed motorcycles. Walsh was a married father of three young children.

The Boston Firefighters Department is accepting donations for both families on their Credit Union website.

  • Wrong Woman Buried in Mortuary Mishap

The local CBS station in Los Angeles is reporting the bizarre story of a California family that buried the wrong woman after a mortuary mixed up two bodies.

Though the incident echoes a scene from the movie Death at a Funeral, members of the woman’s family were not laughing at the mix-up.

The report states that after complaints were raised at a viewing about the identity of the woman in the coffin, mortuary workers told the family of Darlene Davidson that the woman was, in fact, Davidson. They were convincing enough that the woman was buried as scheduled in a dress of Davidson’s. The family was contacted later and told that their mother’s body had not yet been buried.

A mortuary spokesperson told CBS that the mix-up was a mistake and apologized for the mishap. The Cemetery and Funeral Bureau of the California Department of Consumer Affairs is now investigating the incident.

  • Whitney Houston Funeral: Westboro Baptist Church Threatens Picketing, Tweets God’s Hate [Updated]

Update: It sounds like this didn’t actually happen, and that WBC is using Twitter to manipulate the media. NJ.com reports:

Star-Ledger reporters on the scene said access to that area had been restricted all day, and confirmed no active protests were occurring in the place depicted in the photograph.

Westboro Baptist Church threatened to Whitney Houston’s funeral today. Shocker.

You may recall when they said they would picket Steve Jobs’ funeral. Then Penn State football coach Joe Paterno’s. While covering Twitter reaction to Whitney’s funeral today, we stumbled across some tweets from old Margie Phelps, a top member of the church, spreading god’s hate:

You all lied to her;now she’s in hell; too late to pray @llcoolj

Clearly they love the attention. We’re not helping that any, but they’re going to get it regardless. People should know what these people are doing.

Interestingly enough, Kevin Costner (Whitney’s co-star in The Bodyguard), who spoke at the service, said that one thing he and Whitney had in common was that they both grew up in the Baptist church. Much of the Twitterverse is talking about how the funeral is bringing everyone together, spreading god’s love and whatnot.

  • Steve Jobs Funeral Set For Friday

Steve Jobs Funeral Set For Friday

According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’ funeral will take place Friday, October 7th.

The Wall Street Journal quotes the source, saying the funeral will be a small, private gathering. The source had nothing to say regarding the time and location of the funeral, as they wished to respect Jobs and his family’s privacy.

Although Apple has not announced any public services for Jobs, people all across the world have been setting up impromptu memorials outside of Apple Stores. There, people are leaving flowers, messages, and lighting candles for the man that had such a great impact on their lives.

As far as Apple employees are concerned, Tim Cook said (in an email on the night of Jobs’ passing) that they are planning a “celebration” of Steve’s life. Everyone else was asked to share their thought and memories by emailing [email protected].

There has been some controversy regarding Steve Jobs’ funeral, as fringe religious organization Westboro Baptist Church tweeted and blogged that they plan to picket his funeral. Westboro, of course, is known for protesting high profile funerals of celebs and fallen soldiers.

In an ironic twist, it was learned that the anti-Jobs tweets were sent out via Twitter for iPhone. Without a prominent public funeral, it will be quite difficult for Westboro to follow through on their plans.

How will Jobs’ death impact the tech world in the coming months and years? What are some of your favorite memories of Jobs? Let us know in the comments.
