  • New Far Cry 3 Trailer Reveals Hoyt the Tyrant

The holiday gaming season has already begun, but the release of Far Cry 3 still seems far off. The game’s delay to December meant that gamers will be playing Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II well before they can get their hands on the sandbox gameplay of Far Cry 3.

In lieu of allowing players to play the game, Ubisoft has been creating dozens of trailers outlining every aspect of the game. The newer trailer series features some of the characters players will run into while exploring the island, including warlords and sexy tribal leaders.

Today’s trailer features Hoyt, a drug baron on the island. Of course, Hoyt has already been featured in the “Top of the Food Chain” trailer, so Ubisoft might be running out of characters to feature in their trailers.

From the beginning of the video below, when Hoyt forces captives to run across a mine field, it’s clear that he’s a bad guy. This is further emphasized by more murderous actions and the brutal “rules” he commands his men to obey.

Of course, the trailer quickly segues into the type of gameplay seen in other trailers, complete with the requisite explosions. Still, Far Cry 3 looks to be a lot of fun, and I’m sure gamers will have a great time exploring the island once they are through with all of the other blockbuster titles being released earlier this fall.

  • Medal of Honor Warfighter Multiplayer Launch Trailer Released

Though the Battlefield and Call of Duty franchises seem to be the two sides gamers are taking in the war for multiplayer war-simulation supremacy, there are other first person shooters with entertaining multiplayer. Sure, there’s going to be Halo 4 in a few weeks, but there’s also EA’s other modern war game, Medal of Honor Warfighter.

Much like Battlefield and Call of Duty, Medal of Honor began as a World War II shooter. As killing Nazi’s has fallen out of vogue, the franchise has followed others in updating its war simulation to reflect modern (meaning brown and dusty) combat.

Today, Danger Close and EA released a multiplayer launch trailer for Warfighter. It looks nearly identical to the other war-simulation multiplayer modes in the gaming world, complete with lens flares. That’s probably a good thing, though, since those are the types of games that are currently selling millions of copies.

The real question players will have about Warfighter‘s multiplayer is how fun it is. Are the maps and weapons balanced? Are the perks useful? Is the ranking system worth grinding away at? If the answer to these questions is yes, Medal of Honor Warfighter could have a chance to compete with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

  • Doom 3 BFG Edition Launches Today

Doom 3 BFG Edition Launches Today

If you’re exhausted from loot-heavy first person shooters like Borderlands 2 or the stealthy and morally ambiguous gameplay in Dishonored, perhaps it’s time to to revisit the roots of FPS gaming and simply shoot monsters.

Bethesda today released Doom 3 BFG Edition, allowing gamers to relive the mayhem of the Doom franchise. All three Doom games and the Doom 3 add-on Resurrection of Evil are included in the package, but Doom 3 has been re-mastered and can now be played in 3D. In addition, Doom 3 now has improved rendering and lighting, 5.1 surround sound, a new checkpoint system, and achievements/trophies to earn.

Aside from all the technical upgrades, Bethesda has included eight new Doom 3 levels titled “The Lost Mission.”

Doom 3 BFG Edition is now available in the U.S. on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for $40 or on PC for $30. The package goes on sale in Europe on October 19.

  • Call of Duty Elite Going Free For Black Ops II [w/ Trailer]

Activision and Treyarch today announced that the Call of Duty Elite service will be free when Call of Duty: Black Ops II launches on November 13.

“We’ve learned a lot in our first year of Call of Duty Elite, and we’re very proud that we over delivered on our commitment of playable content to our premium members,” said Eric Hirshberg, Activision CEO. “What we have realized is that several of the Call of Duty Elite services which are currently only available to our premium members for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are things that would further unite, engage and delight our player community. So we are going to make them free for Call of Duty: Black Ops II.”

Call of Duty Elite provides players with a place to track their stats and gather with friends or clan members. Treyarch has stated that statistics for Zombies mode will also now be supported through the service. In addition, Call of Duty Elite TV will launch alongside Black Ops II, with regular programming that will feature tips, strategies, class overviews, “and more.”

As for the free downloadable content (DLC) map packs that came with Call of Duty Elite, those can be bought one-at-a-time or will also now be bundled into one of the “season pass” offers that have become popular for games with multiple DLCs planned. The Season Pass will cost 4000 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE, which works out to $50 via PlayStation Network or PC. Activision said that both multiplayer and Zombies modes will be getting extra content, starting in 2013.

Below is a trailer Activision prepared to coincide with today’s announcement.

  • New Far Cry 3 Trailer Shows Off Bad Guy

New Far Cry 3 Trailer Shows Off Bad Guy

The delay of Far Cry 3 until December 4th ticked off plenty of fans, some of whom had pre-ordered the game back in spring. Still, the delay has been beneficial for fans of game trailers, as new Far Cry footage is now almost constantly being released.

Today’s new Far Cry 3 trailer shows many of the same features that have already been shown, but focuses on a single bad guy. It seems Ubisoft is using the same marketing methods Square Enix is using for Hitman: Absolution. This week’s Far Cry baddie is Hoyt Volker, who leads a group of privateers and commands a large mercenary army.

The trailer is accompanies by some pretty laughable narration. The best line? “His privateer army can do a lot more than walk and chew gum at the same time – they’ve been trained to kill.” That’s wonderfully cheesy, but I’m betting the developers of the game are going for a tone that’s a bit more gritty and real for the actual game. Here’s hoping the writing for the game is better than for the trailer narration.

  • New Halo 4 Trailer Shows Redesigned Covenant Weapons

Today, a new Halo 4 trailer highlighting the Covenant weapons featured in Halo 4 was released. Despite their civil war and the destruction visited upon them by Master Chief in previous Halo games, the religious aliens will be back to serve as more cannon fodder for Halo 4.

A similar trailer (featuring a similar dubstep score) was released more than a month ago that features the UNSC weapons in Halo 4. And though the specific weapons of the new vilains, the Prometheans, haven’t gotten their own trailer yet, a bit of their technology was revealed in a video documentary about them.

One major change to the Covenant arsenal is that the plasma rifle has been replaced with the new Storm Rifle. Other than that, several classic covenant guns have gotten a revamped design. Halo fans will instantly recognize slightly modified versions of the Covenant Carbine, Beam Rifle, Concussion Rifle, Fuel Rod Cannon, Needler, Energy Sword, Plasma Pistol, and Gravity Hammer.

Speaking of gravity hammer, it was revealed at Pax Prime a few weeks ago that Grifball, the football/soccer-inspired Halo eSport, will be a multiplayer mode available at launch.

  • New Halo 4 Trailer Shows Off the Big Guns

Halo fans who just can’t wait for Halo 4‘s release this fall will be happy to know that the flow of info, screenshots, and trailers about the game doesn’t show any signs of slowing. This week, the HaloWaypoint YouTube channel has released a new trailer showcasing the guns players will be shooting at each other this November.

Though most of the gun types have been carried over from past Halo games, the look and feel of the weapons appears to have changed quite a bit. The trailer shows classic Halo arms such as the magnum, shotgun, DMR, battle rifle, and rocket launcher. It also shows a few of the new weapons that 343 Industries has created, including the sticky detonator, saw, and railgun.

A quick warning for those of you who don’t appreciate dubstep: this trailer is full of it. Those who don’t want the music can skip to the second trailer, which is the same, but features the actual sound effects from Halo 4 multiplayer.

  • Call of Duty Online Will be Free to Play in China

Activision announced today that Call of Duty is coming to China – for free. The video game publisher has partnered with Tencent Holdings to provide gamers in China with Call of Duty Online, which will be free to play. Tencent is the same Chinese internet, mobile, and telecommunications provider that recently acquired a minority stake in Epic Games.

“We are very excited about our relationship with Tencent and the opportunities for gaming in China,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision. “We think China is one of the most exciting places in the world for us to grow our business and to develop innovative new games.”

Activision stated that Call of Duty Online has been in development for around two years. The agreement between Activision and Tencent means that Tencent will have exclusive rights to operate the game in mainland China.

“We believe Call of Duty Online will attract tens of millions of loyal fans in China, and our game platform and operational expertise to run massive multi-player online games can provide strong support to deliver the immersive and highly interactive game experience to game players in China,” said Martin Lau, president of Tencent.

Releasing a free to play, online game might just be the only strategy that could work for Activision in China, where piracy of video games is rampant. The companies hope to make money through the sale of in-game items and upgrades. Activision said that players will be able to use the in-game store to enhance their weapons, gear, and perks in ways specifically designed for Chinese gamers. The game will also feature a series of “Special Operations” missions that tell an original story based in the Modern Warfare universe.

Take a look below at the announcement trailer for Call of Duty Online:

  • Modern Warfare 3 Faces British Backlash

Modern Warfare 3 Faces British Backlash

It’s shaping up to be a great fall season for gamers, if, for nothing else, than to watch Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 fight it out for top first person shooter honors. It’s EA (BF3) versus Activision (MW3) for all of 2011’s FPS marbles. While Battlefield 3 won the initial battle, simply by coming out swinging first, Modern Warfare 3 has won the latest round with the release of first non-teaser trailer, which leads this article.

They hype level for both games is extremely high, with EA seeing a 700 percent increase of pre-orders; and, well, Modern Warfare is Modern Warfare. The buzz is always high around this particular title. However, the war for 2011 FPS supremacy may be over before it’s begun, thanks to some backlash in England concerning Modern Warfare 3’s content.

According to a report in the Daily Mail (via The Escapist), some scenes from the upcoming game remind some of the 7/7 attacks that took place in London on July of 2005. In the Modern Warfare 3 reveal, certain scenes feature the British Parliament and the London Underground getting attacked.

The Mail also has screenshots of the scenes in question:

    Modern Warfare 3

The backlash is growing the point where some English citizens are calling for Modern Warfare 3 to be banned in England, while other spokespeople responded as well:

Vivienne Pattison, spokesman for campaign group Mediawatch UK, said: “I have concerns as these games are hyper-real and take place in a landscape we are familiar with. In light of the fact we have just had the 7/7 inquests, it is in incredibly poor taste.”

Pattison also supported a ban on the release of Saw IV, to provide some additional perspective.

Of course, the Modern Warfare franchise is no stranger to controversy. When MW 2 was released, a great deal was made about the airport execution scene, but ultimately, Modern Warfare 2 broke records when it was released, and England was right in the middle of those record-breaking sales.

With that in mind, it would be awfully surprising if Modern Warfare 3 was banned in England. In fact, this kind of controversy will only help market the game, because, as we’ve learned time and time again, this kind of outcry only increases interest in the item being discussed. With that in mind, don’t be surprised if Modern Warfare 3 breaks the records set by MW 2, especially in the British Isles.
