  • Newt Scamander, Star Of Harry Potter Spinoff

It was just announced today that J.K. Rowling is going to be in charge of a new film franchise. The series is called Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, based on a textbook that Hogwarts students have been seen using throughout the Harry Potter series. This film is not quite a prequel or sequel to the Harry Potter franchise, but will be viewed more as an extension of the series.

There is a whole series planned that will feature Newt Scamander as the main character and chronicle his adventures. Scamander is the author of the fictional book, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and has been seen throughout the Harry Potter Franchise, as early as Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. Scamander is what has been referred to in the books as a magizoologist, someone who studies magical creatures. His book, which features 75 magical species from around the world, was derived from years of research and travel across five continents, according to the LA Times.

It is said that Newt was born in 1897 and sorted into the Hufflepuff house, after being admitted to Hogwarts. After graduating from Hogwarts, he joined the Ministry Of Magic, the government that exists in the Harry Potter world. He also served as the headmaster of Hogwarts as some point during his life and reportedly wrote the famous book about beasts in 1918. Another interesting fact to not about Scamander is that his grandson ended up marrying Luna Lovegood, a friend to Harry, Ron and Hermoine. She was first mentioned in Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix and has actually been described as Rowling’s favorite character, which says something about Scamander.

Evanna Lynch, the actress who played Luna Lovegood in the series took to twitter, in order to show her excitement about the new film series, and was one of the first to do so. Several other people involved with the Harry Potter films and many fans did as well.

John Green, a fellow young adult author was also excited about the news, but hopes for more books as well. Could that be a possibility? Let’s hope so!

An ebook of the fictional book from the series can also be purchased online for the enjoyment of her dedicated fans at the fan website, Pottermore.

J.K. Rowling will also serve as the screenwriter for the new project and it will be the first time that she has written a screenplay, which she is excited about. She is excited to introduce fans of the Harry Potter franchise into a new part of the wizarding world. The plot of the film will differ by taking place in New York, unlike England with Harry Potter and the story is also expected to take place roughly 70 years before the story of Harry Potter began. Rowling mentioned in a statement to Entertainment Weekly that “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway.”

Seamus Finnegan is excited too. Are you?

A release date for the film as unknown at this point, and whether any familiar characters such as Dumbledore will be a part of the plot. The film will be presented by Warner Brothers, who produced each of the Harry Potter films, and has a close relationship with Rowling.

  • ‘Now You See Me’ Would Be A Lot Better With Gob Bluth And Some Hot Cops

‘Now You See Me’ Would Be A Lot Better With Gob Bluth And Some Hot Cops

YouTuber James Harrop has given us the gift of “Gob Bluth Stars In Now You See Me,” inserting the famous illusionist from Arrested Development, and his “Hot Cop” friends into the trailer for the magic bank heist movie starring Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo and Jesse Eisenberg.

I’ll admit I haven’t seen the film, but I have a hard time believing it wouldn’t be better with Gob and the Hot Cops. TheEuphBeast, commenting on YouTube, seems to concur:

The movie would be a billion times better with Gob. Thank you, my good sir, for making this.

  • Magical Proposal May Bring a Tear to Your Eye

Putting your cute, over-the-top marriage proposal on YouTube is nothing new. Having your girlfriend film her own proposal and presenting the ring with a magic trick? Ok, that’s pretty good – I’ll give you that one.

Let’s just hope their love is no illusion.

Whenever the couple has kids, and they grow up and ask how mommy and daddy got married, they can always point to this:

  • Wizards Are No Longer Welcome On eBay

Wizards Are No Longer Welcome On eBay

You can buy just about anything on eBay. If you want it, somebody will surely have it. There are certain things, however, that you can’t sell. The auction site has put a stop to things like organ sales after people were found to be selling livers and kidneys on the site. The site is now cracking down on a new category of item – the intangibles.

So what is an intangible in eBay’s eyes? Anything to do with magic really. Here’s the full list straight from eBay’s category updates page:

The following items are also being added to the prohibited items list: advice; spells; curses; hexing; conjuring; magic; prayers; blessing services; magic potions; healing sessions; work from home businesses & information; wholesale lists, and drop shop lists.

I never thought that people selling magic spells was much of a problem until I went digging. It turns out that there is a thriving collection of magic for sale on eBay. It covers everything from white magic for protection to really specific stuff like “Black Arabian Magic Break Up Spell.” There’s even a hilarious listing for “Powerful Spell of Vampire Transformation.”

Here’s one spell in particular that caught my eye because I couldn’t stop laughing. The listing is for “Ultimate Black Magic Spells from Experience Magus.” I can’t really do the item description justice, so here it is:

Hail and welcome seeker of the Black Flame!

Make no mistake! If you are reading this then, fate has truly brought you to me!

I am no ordinary Practioner of the Black Arts. I have been trained in many forms of Extreme Dark Magic, Divination, Occultism, and Forbidden Ritual. It is because of this training and dedication to my Art that, I am able to create and cast spells for any occasion!

Do not fall prey to the “dazzling” auction pages that require you to purchase extra spells for 3, 5, or 9X strength for more of your hard earned money! The Power of True Black Magic does not require such Nonsense! Your donation goes towards my time, energy, and ingredients to creating your personal casting.

Funny enough, the spell will only cost you $6.66. This Magus would have you know that spells never “manifest themselves immediately.” If you buy the spell, you’re going to have to wait 60 to 90 days for the spell to take effect. He also must let you know, in accordance with the law, that his spells are “entertainment purposes only” as science has not proven his “metaphysical and paranormal services.”

It’s pretty obvious why eBay would ban the sale of such items. Despite how much you wish it was so, magic isn’t real. The kind of magic on sale here is doubly not real because there’s no guarantee that it will work and they don’t refund purchases for spells that don’t work. It’s a massive liability for eBay since they’re the one that foot the bill on refunds.

It should be noted that these listings will be taken down on August 30. You still have a few more days to buy some spells to help with everything from your love life to cursing your greatest enemies. After that, I guess we’ll just have to go back to living life without magic. What a shame.

  • Magician Turns an iPad into an Endless Beer Keg

German Magician and performance artist Simon Pierro has stumbled onto the most exciting use for an iPad yet: an endless supply of beer. Watch as he wows pub goers at the renown Hofbraeuhaus in Munich with this awesome party trick.

But that’s not the end. He has a few other tricks up his sleeve with the iPad.

“Simon – If you would be a computer – I would marry you as well!” Siri makes the same grammatical mistakes that he does, strange. I would be a computer for Siri.

Simon Pierro is becoming increasingly well known for incorporating electronics in his shows. He is often hired for trade shows to give demonstrations. By incorporating real life interaction with video screens, he make the technology appear more connected to the real world.

I saved this for the end, because I hate to be a spoil sport, but you can clearly see the tube that Pierro uses to pour the beer hidden in his sleeve. If you watch the videos at the point where he is first grabbing the tab, you can see him hook something up to the top of the handle.

This screen cap is at exactly 1:03 of the first video. Sorry.

  • iPad Magicians Show the Magic of Stockholm

What do you get when you combine Swedish magicians and iPads? A quirky presentation about investing in Stockholm real estate, apparently.

Charlie Caper recently posted a video of himself and Erik Rosales pitching the Swedish capitol of Stockholm to a group of real estate professionals. In it, the two use iPads as magic props, showing video on the tablets that coincided with their stage actions. The well-choreographed show demonstrates that technological magic doesn’t have to mean the end of “the real thing.”

The presentation was preformed in Cannes, France at the Marché International des Professionnels d’Immobilier (MIPIM), a trade show for international real estate professionals.

I can’t say I knew much about Stockholm before this presentation, other than knowing that the Scandinavian countries were some of the most prosperous and happy in the world. And even though this presentation was for real estate developers, I think it’s safe to say they’ve sold me on Stockholm.
