  • Facebook’s New Creator App Will Help Social Influencers Create More Video Content

Facebook’s New Creator App Will Help Social Influencers Create More Video Content

Facebook is doing everything it can to woo influencers away from YouTube. The rollout of its Creator app might be just what the social media giant needs to get more video creators on its side.

The app is touted to make it simpler for users to create video and live streams using mobile devices. Facebook is also confident of two things that will draw users to the app – Facebook Live’s new features and unified communication.

The Creator app now includes a feature that allows for the addition of custom created intros and outros to be used during live broadcasts. Specially designed video frames, interactive stickers, and various camera effects are also being introduced. The app also allows the user to shoot and edit photos and upload them to Facebook Stories and various platforms.

The app’s enhanced communication features are also expected to draw in more influencers. The Creator app boasts of an incorporated inbox for all messages and comments posted on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. Having a unified inbox means that the user doesn’t have to move through different apps just to reply. Unfortunately, the app only covers messaging within Facebook’s services but who knows if this will change in the future.

Data and analytics about the video will also be made accessible to users, allowing them to regularly check any algorithm changes to their output. Knowing key details about their follower demographics can help influencers focus on the type of video content they should post and the brands that might be willing to work with them.

Facebook is also launching a website where video bloggers and creators can get more information on how to develop videos for the site, as well as receiving answers to key questions. Site members will also be given early access to any upcoming features.

The Facebook Creator app is now available on iOS. However, Android users will have to wait a few more months for the app to be launched on the system. It should be pointed out that the Creator app is not technically new. It’s a rebranding of the Facebook Mentions app that was launched in 2014 and which was initially available only to verified Pages and public figures. However, the app is now open to all users.

With the Creator app, Facebook is showing just how much it wants to work with influencers and independent vloggers. And with the errors and strange changes currently happening on YouTube, the social media giant might just be able to win this influential and potentially lucrative community to its side.

  • Facebook Mentions Gets New Features on iOS

Facebook Mentions Gets New Features on iOS

Facebook announced some updates to the Facebook Mentions iOS app.

“Today’s updates make it easier for people to broadcast in landscape / portrait mode and save the video after going live,” a spokesperson for Facebook tells us in an email. “People can now also filter posts within their Mentions feed by source, as well as by topic, and reply to private messages sent to their Page or Profile from within the Mentions app.”

With the Live improvements, videos will still appear in a square aspect ratio regardless of which way you hold the phone, but this makes it easier to not have to worry about which way you’re holding the phone.

With the feed update, if you only want to see posts from media outlets, for example, you can select “Media Sources” from the dropdown.

To reply to messages, go to the notifications tab and tap on the messaging icon.

Mentions is only for verified Facebook users of course. Last week, Facebook finally launched an Android app for it.

The iOS pap has been available for going on two years, but now many more will be able to utilize it as Android commands a much bigger share of the market, though I don’t know what the break-down is among verified users.

  • Verified Facebook Users Get New Mentions Android App

Verified Facebook Users Get New Mentions Android App

Facebook finally launched a new Facebook Mentions Android app for verified users. There has been one available for iOS, which has a fraction of the the mobile operating system market share, for going on two years.

With the app, which verified users can stream live video, talk with followers, and otherwise use Facebook in normal ways like sharing updates, photos, videos, etc. They can also get posts from people they follow and see trending stories from the app.

Verified accounts are generally reserved for actors, musicians, journalists, and “other influencers,” so this app is not for most people. That said, it’s nice that people who don’t use iPhones are not allowed to be influencers on Facebook and get the same features.

  • Facebook Mentions App Opens to Verified Profiles

Facebook Mentions, the company’s app for celebrities, is becoming a little less exclusive.

Starting today, Mentions is available to anyone with a verified profile.

“People love reading articles from and connecting with their favorite journalists and public figures on Facebook. Today, we’re making Facebook Mentions and Live available to public figures with verified profiles to help them engage their followers and interact with their peers,” says Facebook.

Facebook first launched the Mentions app for public figures back in July of 2014. Facebook calls it “a better way for actors, athletes, musicians and other influencers to stay in touch with their fans and the people and things they care about.” It basically allows celebs to filter out the noise and better manage their pages.

Last month, Facebook added livestreaming capabilities to the app in order to compete with the surging Periscope (Twitter-owned) and Meerkat.

If you’re a public figure and you think you should be verified, you can apply for that here. Then you can enjoy Mentions and live streaming. You’re probably not a public figure, however, but maybe all of us will someday get livestreaming capabilities.

  • William Shatner: Facebook’s Mentions App ‘Ill Conceived’

Last week, Facebook announced the launch of its latest app Mentions. It’s an app aimed at letting “public figures” (or celebrities) manage their Facebook presence, talk with fans, and talk with each other from their mobile devices.

Celebrity William Shatner is not impressed. He even went so far as to write a review of the app on Tumblr. He says he discovered the new app from a banner ad at the top of his Facebook account. He also uses the Facebook app and the Pages app (which anyone can use to manage their Facebook Pages).

“When you install the Mentions App you cannot proceed further until you follow another one of their other ‘celebrity’ accounts,” he writes. “The first person on the list I was given was George Takei (rolling my eyes.) I ended up choosing Robert Downey Jr. to follow and then I hid his posts (sorry Robert!) I think that is a big flaw in the set up. If this app is for celebrities then WHY force them to follow another celebrity in order to set up this app? I think that is a flaw; I’m already following those who I want to follow – why insist I follow that short list of others?”

He proceeds to pick through the feed, mentions/activity, posting, notifications, etc.

Shatner’s conclusion is as follows: “I’m not quite sure why Facebook released this app for “celebrities”. It seems to be ill conceived. I will probably use it to post to my Facebook when I’m on my phone but it doesn’t allow for mail or groups. I will continue to use my regular Facebook App as well as the Pages app.”

At least he’s going to use it.

Mentions is the latest app from Facebook Creative Labs, which is also responsible for the strange Slinshot app launched last month.

  • Facebook Launches ‘Mentions’ App For Public Figures

Facebook announced the launch of a new iPhone app for public figures called Facebook Mentions. It’s the latest from the Facebook Creative Labs team, which is responsible for the company’s Slingshot and Paper apps.

The app is designed to make it easier for public figures to talk with fans and each other from their mobile devices. It lets them see what fans are saying about them and respond, share updates, photos and videos, host live Q&As, join popular Facebook conversations and see the latest posts from people they follow, and get notifications about posts (including mentions) and other things.

“Nearly 800 million people are connected to public figures on Facebook, and interacting with athletes, musicians, actors and other influencers is an important part of their experience,” says product manager Allison Swope. “From cheering on World Cup players to checking out updates from favorite celebrities, there are more than a billion interactions between public figures and their fans on Facebook every week.”

The app is only available to those with verified pages in the US, but it will become available to more countries and profiles in the coming months. No word on an Android release.
