  • 3D Printing Gets Its Own Dedicated Convention In April

Plenty of people are excited about the future of 3D printing, but not many events are solely dedicated to the technology. Sure, there’s the Maker Faire and Euromold, but those events cover much more than just 3D printing. That’s all going to change in April.

WebMediaBrands announced that its hosting the inaugural Inside 3D Printing Conference and Expo in New York City this year. The event will take place on April 22-23, and feature the latest and greatest innovations in 3D printing. The conference will be chaired by 3D printing expert Dr. Hod Lipson of Cornell University.

“Inside 3D Printing is the first U.S. event to delve into the present and future of the business impact of 3D printing,” stated Alan M. Meckler, Chairman and CEO of WebMediaBrands. “3D printing has become the next great technological disruptive force in the field of ‘making things’ and according to a recent article in The Economist, 3D printing ‘could well rewrite the rules of manufacturing in much the same way as the PC trashed the traditional world of computing.’”

Of course, it’s a little unfair that East Coast folks get to have all the fun 3D printing fun. Worry not, as WebMediaBrands intends to bring a similar show to Santa Clara, CA in September of this year.

In short, 3D printing now has two events dedicated to it coming this year. It’s really gratifying to see a technology finally get its own conference, and getting two in the same year is even better. It just goes to show that 3D printing is being taken very seriously now.

You can find out more about the conference at the official Web site. The event is looking for exhibitors and sponsors now so interested parties will want to sign up before it’s too late.

UPDATE: Commenter Duncan Wood points out that the Inside 3D Printing Conference and Expo is not the first of its kind in the U.S. If you want more 3D printing madness, you’ll want to check out RAPID and AMUG. The latter will be holding its conference a week before WebMediaBrands’. RAPID’s conference will be in June.

  • GameStop Announces Opens EXPO to PowerUp Rewards Members

Until now, GameStop’s annual EXPO conference has been exclusively for GameStop employees. Today, GameStop has announced it is opening up the conference to a wider audience. Members of GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards program are invited to attend the conference, which will be be held in San Antonio, Texas on August 29. EXPO will feature pre-release video game demos and previews, contests, and sessions with video game publishers and “special guests.”

In addition to the general admission tickets sold for $35, GameStop is offering VIP admission for $100. Both are available for purchase with a credit card or with PowerUp Rewards points. VIP attendees will gain access to VIP lines for autographs and signings, access to a VIP gaming lounge, and admission to up to four General Sessions. The General Sessions will grant in-depth looks at upcomming games. Confirmed General Session presenters include Warner Bros., Namco Bandai, Ubisoft, and Square Enix.

Two quick notes for those of you already packing your bags for San Antonio. The conference will only be one day long for PowerUp Rewards members, and only five hours long. That’s certainly not enough time to experience everything at the conference, and might not be worth a cross-country trip. Also, the conference won’t be a big cosplay event. No weapons or items that can be “construed as a weapon” will be allowed in.
