  • California Earthquake: 6.9-Magnitude Strikes Eureka Coast

An offshore earthquake struck Northern California Sunday night, which was mainly centered in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 10 miles.

Sources say that the earthquake occurred around 10:18 p.m., 50 miles offshore of Eureka, Calif.

The magnitude of the quake was calculated at 6.9 and was immediately followed by nearly six aftershocks.

The quake itself was felt heavily throughout the region. Several aftershocks even made their way to the city of San Francisco and parts of Oregon.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the aftershocks scaled at 2.9, 3.7, and 4.6 magnitudes mainly in Ferndale, Calif., which is only 48 miles away from the earthquake’s epicenter.

More than a dozen aftershocks have been felt since Sunday night. Three thousand people reported the earthquake to the USGS website.

One California resident who lives in Rio Dell, 55 miles away from the earthquake’s focal point, told the Associated Press that the quake did not last very long.

“It was a big bump and then it rolled for about 30 seconds,” said 64-year-old Diana Harralson. “It was a real good shaker.”

Another witness shared with KTUV a similar experience.

Mike Meltzer of Ferndale said that the tremor lasted for about 10 seconds.

“I’ve been through a number of these,” said Meltzer, who was a woking bartender at the time of the event. “It wasn’t a jolter; it was a wave.”

One resident in Santa Monica tweeted to a friend that the sound of the earthquake confused her:

Sgt. Brian Stephens of the Eureka Police Department told the Los Angeles Times Monday morning that his experience was quite different. To him, the quake lasted almost 40 seconds and was “definitely a long one.”

“I thought someone was shoving my car back and forth, looked around and nobody was there. Then I realized what was happening,” he told the newspaper.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed Sunday night that there were no tsunami threats near the area.

Additionally, there have been no reports of injury or death.

  • California Earthquake: Magnitude 6.9 Hits CA Coast

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake off the coast of California had residents rocking and rolling.

The quake hit around 10:18 pm on Sunday night, and was located in the Pacific Ocean less than 55 miles from McKinleyville, Fortuna, Eureka and Ferndale in Humboldt County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) .

The quake was felt as far away as southern Oregon.

The USGS put the depth of the quake at about four miles, with no tsunami warnings issued.

Eureka Police Department Sgt. Brian Stephens said there had been no reports of significant damage or injuries. “My car was rocking back and forth,” Stephens, who was on out on a call when the earthquake hit, told The Times. “I thought someone was shoving my car back and forth, looked around and nobody was there. Then I realized what was happening.”

Stephens said as of about 6:15 a.m. Monday, “we have not had one report of damage anywhere in the city.”

The 6.5 quake that hit the area in 2010 caused much more damage, it snapped power lines, crumbled chimneys, traffic signals were knocked down and windows shattered, causing an evacuation of at least one apartment building.

This earthquake was described as a long rolling event, not like the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that shook Eureka in Jan 2010, as Stephens described:

“Definitely a change from the last one we had,” Stephens said, referring to the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that rocked Eureka in January 2010. “This one was the exact same magnitude almost … This was a roller and the other was more or less a violent shaking.”

Stephens said it was his understanding the quake Sunday night, which hit at 10:18 p.m., lasted as long as 38 seconds.

“It was definitely a long one,” he said.

The earthquake was followed by a multitude of aftershocks, some registering up to 4.6 on the Richter scale.

“This lasted longer than any earthquake I’ve ever felt,” Raquel Maytorena, 52, who lives about a mile from the coast in Ferndale, told the Los Angeles Times. “It just kept going and going, very slowly and softly. It was not violent. It almost felt like you were in a boat that was rocking.”

  • Priest Killed in California Town

    Priest Killed in California Town

Reverend Eric Freed of St. Bernard’s Catholic Parish in Eureka, California was found dead in the rectory of the church yesterday. The priest failed to show up for morning Mass, and someone was sent to check on him.

According to the Times-Standard, Police Chief Andrew Mills has confirmed that his department is pursuing a murder investigation in connection with the death of the priest. The priest’s car was also stolen during the crime.

“It’s a violent crime and obviously, with this kind of response, we’re taking it very seriously,” said the Chief.

As of right now, no one is in custody. However, Eureka police have now issued a warrant for one Gary Lee Bullock in connection with the murder.

According to a local news site, the warrant contains these further details:

On Dec. 31, 2013 BULLOCK was the subject of a radio call regarding a person who was acting strangely in the Garberville area of southern Humboldt County. Humboldt County deputies located and arrested BULLOCK for public intoxication. He was taken to jail where he was rejected due to his erratic behavior.

BULLOCK was then taken to the hospital for evaluation where he became more agitated and had to be physically restrained by deputies. BULLOCK was ultimately booked into jail at 1634 hours.

Gary BULLOCK was released at 0043 hours on January 1, 2014. At about 0200 hours officers from Eureka Police Department were dispatched to 615 H Street, regarding a suspicious person. Officers contacted BULLOCK nad found that BULLOCK was not intoxicated and did not qualify for an emergency psychological hold. Officers referred BULLOCK to an emergency shelter for the night.

Later that evening a security guard heard noise in the area of the church and went to investigate. He saw a person matching BULLOCK’s description and directed him to leave the property after a short conversation.

At about 9 AM officers were dispatched to to the church Rectory where parishioners found Reverend Fathers Eric Freed badly injured. Officers and a doctor, who is a parishioner at St. Bernard, observed that he was deceased. The exact cause of death has yet to be determined and an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday. It does appear that there was blunt force trauma to the victim.

EPD’s investigation into this homicide has revelaed that forced entry was made into the parsonage and a violent struggle ensued. The pastor’s vehicle was also noticed missing during the crime scene search.
