  • Kristin Scott Thomas Named Dame by Queen Elizabeth

Kristin Scott Thomas can add something besides actor to her already impressive resume. On Tuesday, December 30th, Queen Elizabeth named her a dame. The honor is to women what being knighted is to men.

Kristin Scott Thomas, who is due to play the British monarch in stage play The Audience in 2015, said at first she didn’t believe the news.

“I am thrilled, astonished and worried that I might suddenly wake up,” she said.

Scott Thomas received an Academy Award nomination back in 1997 for her role in The English Patient.

She wasn’t the only one on Tuesday to receive such exciting news, however. Actress Joan Collins, fashion designer Mary Quant (known for designing the mini-skirt back in the 1960s), and actress Emily Watson were all named as dames. Actor John Hurt, chemist Simon Campbell (one of the inventors of the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra), and comic actor James Corden (he will soon take over on The Late Late Show for Craig Ferguson) were all named as knights.

All of the aforementioned honors are bestowed by the monarch, however they were chosen by committees of civil servants. Nominations came from both the public and the government.

Knights are hereby addressed as ‘Sir,’ and then the person’s name–for example, Sir Simon Campbell. Dames are addressed as ‘Dame,’ and then their name–for example, Dame Kristin Scott Thomas.

Congratulations to Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, Dame Joan Collins, Dame Mary Quant, and Dame Emily Watson, as well as to Sir John Hurt, Sir Simon Campbell, and Sir James Corden. May they live up to the expectations of Queen Elizabeth.

Cholesterol Drug by Amgen Cuts LDL by 60%

A new class of experimental drugs have been proven to dramatically lower cholesterol, and may become a viable option for the 70 million Americans who have high LDL (low-density lipoprotein) or “bad” cholesterol. One of these new medicines, Amgen’s Evolocumab, cut cholesterol by 55 to 66 percent compared to a placebo in some studies.

The new cholesterol drugs might serve as a replacement for patients who can’t tolerate or don’t see enough benefits from existing drugs like Lipitor, as well as other statin drugs that have been around for decades. The initial comprehensive studies were presented at an American College of Cardiology conference in Washington on Saturday.

Cholesterol is an organic lipid molecule and an essential structural component of animal cell membranes, which is required to create proper membrane permeability and fluidity. Animal fats are complex mixtures of triglycerides, phospholipids and cholesterol. As a result of this, all foods containing animal fat contain cholesterol to varying degrees. Foods high in cholesterol include egg yolks, beef, cheese, pork, poultry, fish, and shrimp. Breast milk and alcohol also contain high amounts of cholesterol.

Elevated amounts of LDL or “bad” cholesterol can cause cardiovascular disease. LDL molecules can transport their content of fat molecules into arterial walls, which in turn can lead to heart disease. Traditional drug therapies include the use of statins, which reduce high levels of LDL particles by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase in cells, niacin, which reduces triglyceride synthesis, and Clofibrate, which has been associated with significantly increased risk of cancer and stroke, regardless of lowered cholesterol levels.

Notwithstanding, the best approach to lowering cholesterol has been dietary. The reduction of abdominal fat, as well minimizing total body fat lowers LDL. As plants contain very low amounts of cholesterol, vegetarian diets have been shown to reduce LDL levels.

In related news, it’s been reported that certain cholesterol medications might help men suffering with erectile dysfunction.

  • Cholesterol Medications Have a Romantic Side

U.S. News reports that new research from the American College of Cardiology’s 63 Annual Scientific Session asserts that certain cholesterol medications also improve erectile dysfunction by almost 25 percent.

The soon-to-be most popular cholesterol medication in the world are of the statin variety, which go by the names of Altoprev, Crestor, Lescol, Mevacor, Pravachol and Zocor. These medicines are used to decrease LDL and triglycerides and slightly increase HDL. (LDL are low-density lipoproteins aka The Bad Cholesterol, and HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein aka The Good Cholesterol, which help clean out the LDL cholesterol.)

While these medicines have their benefits, they also have side effects such as bodily pain and weakness, muscle soreness, cramps, constipation, nausea and diarrhea. This new development, however, may make it all worth it, especially since cholesterol issues and erectile dysfunction have a direct correlation. The reason for this is because of the constricted blood vessels prevalent in high-cholesterol sufferers. Statins focus on the dilation of blood vessels, which means more blood will flow exactly where it matters in the matters of lovin’.

Before you consider these cholesterol medicines as an alternative for an erectile dysfunction medicine, keep in mind that statins are definitely not for otherwise healthy males. If you are diagnosed with high cholesterol however, consider this as a possible silver lining and check with your doctor to see if statins are for you. Also be sure to look for the complete study to be published in the April edition of the Journal of Sexual Medicines today.

Viagra Strike to Create Penis Fails

Some Italians will have difficulty copulating if the government fails to appease hospital pharmacists. Professionals in the field are threatening to go on strike if Premier Mario Monti’s economic liberalization plan continues.

The plan is viewed as unfair by the professionals because it gives private pharmacists preference for new licenses. These pill processors are focusing on Viagra because of its popularity and the fact that if it were denied to consumers their health would not be at risk.

In the United States, more than 5 million men have used Viagra to improve their sexual function — including Rush Limbaugh.

Rush Limbaugh took a vacation to the Dominican Republic, known for its sex-tourism, with a bottle of Viagra that was not registered to him. He got busted and was detained by drug enforcement at the Palm Beach International Airport in June of 2006.

Limbaugh told customs officials that the pills were blue M&Ms that he got from the Clinton Library and joked about his brush with the law on his radio show, “I had a great time in the Dominican Republic. Wish I could tell you about it.”

Limbaugh’s current and fourth wife, Kathryn Rogers, is 26 years younger than Rush. Hope he can keep up.

Get Your Boner Checked Before We Medicate

I don’t know if it’s good news or bad news, but state Senator Nina Turner of Ohio has just introduced a new bill that would require men to seek therapy and undergo a series of tests before receiving treatment for Erectile Dysfunction. Senate Bill 307 seeks to keep men informed about health issues and side-effects related to taking drugs like Cialis and Viagra to treat their Erectile Dysfunction.

Turner commented in her press release about the bill:

“When a man makes a crucial decision about his health and his body, he should be fully aware of the alternative options and the lifetime repercussions of that decision.”

“This legislation will take strong steps to protect men from the harmful effects of PDE-5 inhibitors (phosphodiesterase type 5). PDE-5 inhibitors are prescribed to men who are experiencing symptoms of male impotence and carry serious side effects such as priapism, hearing loss, and vision loss.”

“Please join us in this fight to protect those who are our greatest protectors. The men in our lives generously devote time and debate to fundamental female reproductive issues; the least we can do is return the favor.”

This all sounds pretty good to me. I have heard horror stories about people who abuse these types of medications and I think it is wise to take a stand on the issue. Many who are suffering from this disorder do so for psychological reasons and it is not appropriate to introduce these chemicals into their bodies needlessly. This stuff can really mess you up. I am with her on this, but then she loses me with her next comment.

Again Turner comments in her press release for the bill:

“The diligence with which men in state legislatures across the nation have considered the fragile health and feeble minds of women has prompted me to reflect on the welfare of the more powerful breed: men.”

I didn’t realize that our government was being funded for a boys vs. girls legislation match, but maybe it is. In that case, “I don’t like your idea ’cause your a girl! Eh! We wanna be fat and have boners!”.

Anyhow, here’s the main gist of her goals for the bill, all kidding aside:

The bill seeks to protect the lives and health of men by requiring the following prior to receiving a prescription to treatment for erectile dysfunction:

    • a signed affadavit from at least one sex partner confirming the man has indeed experienced the symptoms of impotence in the past 90 days

    • a psychological screening to ensure the condition is, in fact, medical in nature

    • ongoing cardiac stress tests and outpatient counseling about potential side effects

    • information from the prescribing physician about risks and complications, as well as non-medical options including counseling and celibacy

    • a copy of medical rationale for treatment filed in the patient’s medical record

Here’s what people on Twitter had to say:
