  • Star Trek: TOS Gets Final Two Years of Original Mission, Thanks to Fans

Star Trek: The Original Series, as the television show that started it all is called nowadays, had a problem. The show’s iconic intro voiceover proclaimed that the U.S.S. Enterprise has a “five-year mission”, but the show was canceled after only three seasons.

Of course, it’s not like Star Trek went the way of Firefly. The TOS cast went on to do numerous feature films together. There was an animated series. There were spinoffs galore in the form of The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space 9, and Enterprise. And then came the entire reboot of the Kirk-led stories at the hands of J.J. Abrams.

But something about the unfinished business of those final two years of the original five-year mission has stuck in the craw of Trek fans for decades. What else might have happened in that time?

Now a group of enterprising actors and producers aims to find out.

A group called Far From Home, LLC is creating those final two years, with new actors and modern production sensibilities. Star Trek Continues is a non-profit, fan produced webseries that was launched in May 2013 with its first episode, “Pilgrim of Eternity.” The group launched a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $100,000 for help film more episodes.

The group boasts some real talent in its acting and production crew, including Chris Doohan, son of James Doohan, who played the original Scotty on Star Trek. Doohan is reprising the role his dad made famous.

Grant Imahara of Mythbusters, also famous for inventing Craig Ferguson’s robot skeleton sidekick, Geoff, is also on board. Though Imara does not voice Geoff, the skeleton does use a vaguely-George Takei-sounding voice. Imahara plays Sulu in the series, bringing the gag full circle.

  • Showtime Renews Hit Shows “Shameless” And “House Of Lies” For Another Season

In news that should not be a shock to most people, the Showtime network has renewed both Shameless and House Of Lies. Both shows air on Sunday night, and have dedicated fans who continue to buzz about them.

Showtime is not always recognized for its quality of television by the Emmy Awards or The Golden Globes, but it does tend to have some of the most popular shows, in terms of the fans who watch them.

Dexter and Weeds were both huge when they aired, while Nurse Jackie continues to give Edie Falco award nominations. Nurse Jackie will begin its 6th season in April, joined by Californication, which will be ending this year with its seventh, and final season.

Showtime made the announcement today that Shameless and House Of Lies would both be returning in 2015, and will enter their fifth and fourth seasons in the upcoming year, respectively.

The two powerhouse Sunday night shows will join Matt Leblanc’s Episodes, which has already been renewed for a fourth season. Leblanc has continually been nominated for awards for essentially playing himself in the 30-minute comedy series.

Shameless is based on a British series of the same name, and follows a poor family living in Chicago, chronicling the struggles that each of them face while growing up. The kids are forced to raise each other due to their absent mother, and constantly drunk father, who is played by William H. Macy. The show stars Emmy Rossum as the legal guardian, and eldest sibling in the family.

The show is averaging 5.5 million viewers across multiple platforms, and is currently in its highest-rated season yet. Shameless’ ratings are up 8 percent vs. its third season and up 22 percent vs. season two. Its highest-rated episode of the season came on Jan. 26 when it drew 1.83 million viewers at 9 p.m.

House Of Lies is a newer show that features two Hollywood stars in Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell. The 30-minute comedy follows a group of misfit consultants who are constantly bickering with each other as they attempt to get their next client.

It is one of the only Showtime shows to gain attention at award shows recently, while being nominated as a show, and for Don Cheadle’s work. Don Cheadle has been nominated for two Golden Globes and two Emmy Awards for his role as Marty Kaan, winning the Golden Globe in 2012.

Shameless and House Of Lies continue to draw the viewers in on Sunday night, allowing Showtime to compete with the other pay networks such as HBO and Netflix, which both boast impressive subscriber counts.
