  • Interview: Creator of “Annoying Orange” Viral Sensation Talks Going from YouTube to TV

Aside from hilarious cat videos and other memes, YouTube is known for helping to create numerous Web celebrities including Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager, Fred Figglehorn, and Rebecca Black. Another phenomenon to add to this list is the popular Annoying Orange video show that involves the adventures of several pieces of fruit, namely an orange.

What’s your favorite YouTube sensation? Please share it with us in the comments.

Dane Boedigheimer, Creator of Annoying Orange The show was created by Dane Boedigheimer who, ironically, has a history of creating content about talking food. In the above interview with WebProNews, Boedigheimer, more commonly known as “Daneboe,” told us that his past talking food videos were all one-offs about different foods being killed at the end. When he created Annoying Orange, he had the same intention; but, fortunately for him, it became a hit.

“For some reason, the character resonated, and people wanted more,” he said.

Although talking food seemed to be his “forte,” Boedigheimer had no idea it would reach the level of success it has. At this point, the Annoying Orange YouTube channel has well over 1 billion views and more than 2 million subscribers.

    Check out the latest episode:

Boedigheimer credits much of the success of the show to Facebook and Twitter. The Annoying Orange Facebook page has over 10 million “likes” and the pages for the individual characters have hundreds of thousands of fans as well.

Also on Twitter, Annoying Orange has over 200,000 followers and the individual character’s accounts show a similar popularity.

“A lot of times, I can push almost just as much traffic… via Facebook and Twitter as I can through YouTube,” said Boedigheimer.

He told us that they utilize these platforms to also create mini episodes, which results in a very high level of engagement with fans.

In addition to the show’s success on YouTube, Annoying Orange has landed a deal with the Cartoon Network. They are currently in the writing process and plan to air the show in June, if all goes well.

In the early days of Annoying Orange, Boedigheimer and Spencer Grove, who wrote the show, were the solely responsible for the work that went into it. However, now with its excessive growth and entrance into television, the team has expanded.

Boedigheimer said that while they are very excited about the transition into TV, they are also excited about the future of the Web series.

“What I really want to be able to do is take both things and have them work in tandem,” he said.

Ideally, he wants the Web show and the TV show to promote each other and push traffic back and forth. In other words, he doesn’t want viewers to feel like they can watch one without watching the other. Often times, it seems as though Internet stars forget about their start once they’ve gone mainstream. Boedigheimer does not want this to happen, and instead, wants viewers to feel a need to watch both programs in order to get the full experience.

“If we can make that happen and be successful, I think it’s kind of setting a standard,” said Boedigheimer.

TV, incidentally, is not the only area that Annoying Orange has made an entrance in of late. It has also caught the attention of the film industry. No, there’s not a film about the Annoying Orange in the works yet, but the show did partner with Relativity Media in an effort to promote the upcoming film Mirror, Mirror.

One of the big challenges of viral sensations such as Annoying Orange is the issue of sustainability. Boedigheimer, though, believes consistency is the key to overcoming this difficulty.

“With YouTube or any online video site, you have to stay consistent because the audience expects it,” he pointed out.

With Annoying Orange, they post a new video every Friday. Even if something falls through and they aren’t able to have a new episode, they post a video explaining that there isn’t anything new, but they offer a contest, game, or something to keep the audience engaged.

If the numbers are any indication of the effectiveness of Boedigheimer’s method, it appears that he’s on the right track.

Are you a fan of Annoying Orange? If so, do you plan to watch the TV version as well? Let us know.

  • Razzies: Adam Sandler Sets Record, Twitter Reacts

Adam Sandler has made cinematic history with his film Jack and Jill. He has set the record for most “Razzie” nominations in one year by one person.

    The Razzies’ site says:

With three critically-panned movies released by his Happy Madison Productions, 2011 was A Berry Bad Year for Adam Sandler, who now totally dominates the list of contenders for The 32nd Annual RAZZIE® Awards. Sandler has more than doubled Eddie Murphy’s old record for the most nominations accrued by an individual in a single year. As an actor, writer and/or producer on JACK & JILL, BUCKY LARSON and JUST GO WITH IT, the former SNL star has amassed a whopping 11 RAZZIE® nods, dis-honoring last year’s Worst Achievements in Film.

Leading the pack for Worst Picture is Sandler’s cross-dressing comedy JACK & JILL, which received 12 nods in all (becoming only the 4th film in the Tacky Trophy’s history ever to get more dings than the awards have categories). Besides having the inside track to “win” the top award, JILL is also contending for Sandler as Worst Actor (as male twin Jack) Katie Holmes as Worst Supporting Actress (playing Jack’s wife) and former Oscar® regular Al Pacino, nabbing his third RAZZIE® nod for playing “himself” as being madly in love with Sandler’s female twin. Sandler is also nominated for Worst Actress for playing the role of Jill and, should he “win,” and choose to follow in the footsteps of previous “winners” Halle Berry (CATWOMAN) and Sandra Bullock (ALL ABOUT STEVE) Sandler could potentially become the first “winner” who literally has the balls to accept a Worst Actress RAZZIE®.

Jack and Jill’s average IMDB rating is 3.2/10. Here’s the trailer for the film:

  • Nike’s Galaxy Foamposite Causes Riots, Twitter Fun

What some are calling the “most anticipated Nike releases to date,” the release of Nike’s Galaxy Foamposite shoes did not disappoint, at least on an entertainment front. Yes, it the enjoyment was coupled with a tinge of sadness as you watch a nation of youngsters do everything short of selling their souls, all to own a piece of Nike’s sole.

Bad puns aside, the anticipation for Nike’s $220 is so high, folks in Orlando started acting unruly, causing the city to send out riot geared police units. While there were no reports of arrests or shootings in the Orlando area (thank goodness for small miracles), the hubbub did cause Foot Locker to cancel some of their Florida releases:

Update 2/24,1:30am EST: Due to safety concerns, we are canceling the All-Star releases this weekend (product list below) at the following Foot Locker House of Hoops stores: Florida Mall, Pembroke Mall, University Mall in Tampa, Southlake Mall and PG Plaza. Our priority is the safety of the community. Thank you for your understanding. Please check back for additional updates. This does not affect online releases.

As with everything in today’s world, there’s some civilian video of the fun in Orlando:

The mainstream media braved the scene as well:

But the real fun surrounding the Foamposites came from Twitter, which is just about par for the course. While the trend has cooled some this morning; last night, it was a roaring fire. I “favorited” some of the ones that stood out. Be warned, however, the language use is NSFW, and may be slightly offensive to those who are uncomfortable with certain race-related terms:

In fact, there was a lot of back and forth over the riots and the lengths people go through just to get some shoes. Some took it as a reflection on society as a whole, while some thought they were just ugly. That being said, the demand for the Foamposites is high:

Speaking of eBay, while I haven’t seen any $2500 auctions — there were even rumors of $20,000 auctions, for goodness’ sakes — there are quite a few asking for $1000 or more. Is this how society falls? People absolutely losing their collective minds over a pair of basketball shoes and starting a riot that brings the country to its knees?

Would you be surprised if it did?

  • Jay-Z Faces Competition From Rapping Russian Billionaire

According to recent estimates, Mikhail Prokhorov is the third richest man from Russia and the 32nd richest man in the entire world. But all the money in the world can’t buy you rap skills.

The Russian billionaire has gone viral with a performance he made as a guest appearance on a Russian comedy show called “Projector Paris Hilton.” The appearance actually took place a couple of weeks ago, but it was only recently that the video began to see wide circulation via social media outlets – and the YouTube views have climbed.

Prokhorov begins with an awkward “yo, yo” and leads into a rap that’s probably not going to get him in the studio with Jay-Z (although Jay-Z is given plenty of mentions). But he does declare himself the real Russian Eminem, which gets no argument from this writer.

    Check it out below:

Prokhorov, who owns the majority stake in the New Jersey Nets (Jay-Z owns a smaller share), is also in the news recently due to his political aspirations. In December, he declared his entrance into the Russian Presidential race as an independent.

Some have accused Prokhorov of been a part of a government-backed charade. According to the AP, to some, his candidacy is “viewed as a Kremlin-approved effort to add legitimacy to the election and channel public discontent highlighted by massive protest rallies.” But he denies that he’s in it for any reason other than to fight for the Presidency.

According to recent polls, Vladimir Putin is set to win the March 4th election by a substantial margin. I’m pretty sure that this charming little rap performance has endeared Prokhorov to more than a few people, however.

  • Danica Patrick OK After Crash

Danica Patrick walked away from her crash at the Gatorade Duel at Daytona Thursday, after slamming into a wall on the last lap of the qualifying race. Thanks to Nascar safety innovations, along with Patrick’s quick thinking, she was uninjured. The video below shows how Patrick took her hands off the wheel to avoid broken wrists:

“It felt like a pretty big hit, so I don’t know what (the crash) looked like,” Patrick said, according to USA Today. Tony Stewart, winner of the race, and also the owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, the team fielding Patrick stated, “it was really impressive to watch how she just kept picking her way through the field. She got up to sixth at one point. I thought she did a good job – There wasn’t any doubt in my mind that she would do that.” Patrick was in 10th place at her crash, which cost her starting position for Sunday’s Daytona 500. She have to use a backup car, and will have to make up her points-race Cup debut from the back of the field.

“It felt like a pretty big hit, so I don’t know what (the crash) looked like,” Patrick told her pit crew, “I’m really just bummed out that we didn’t finish the last two corners. Instead we have a car in the wall and lots of damage and I’m sure a backup. But maybe the backup car will be faster.” Stewart mentioned one of Patrick’s biggest priorities presently is gaining the respect and trust of fellow drivers. “It’s hard for her now because she’s trying to gain the confidence of the guys around her that she’s solid and is going to make good decisions,” Stewart said. He adds that for a while during the race, drivers seemed wary to run with Patrick, and were avoiding her.

Patrick is set to race full-time in NASCAR this year. She’ll drive Nationwide for JR Motorsports, and plans to run a partial Cup schedule for Stewart.

“I feel really feel good,” Patrick said. “I feel comfortable, I feel confident, I feel like if things fall our way and I can take the experience from today into Sunday, I think it will be a good day. And obviously, things that are out of your control can make it a bad day, but that’s kind of the excitement about racing.” Stewart added that Patrick gained respect in the field by showing patience and poise during the qualifier, noting that she’s a typically a more aggressive driver.

  • UK’s Mail Online Near 100 Million Users

UK’s Mail Online Near 100 Million Users

Associated Newspapers’ Mail Online was close to having 100 million readers in January, and growth doesn’t appear to be showing signs of slowing down. The Associated Newspapers network of websites drew 99,218,476 monthly browsers, a 17.88% increase compared with last December, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations numbers published today. Mail Online’s daily users rose 19.57% during January to 5,784,946.

According to the Guardian, in January they remained the second largest online newspaper in the UK, with daily users rising 22.31% to 3,592,387. The Guardian News & Media website network as a whole, that includes MediaGuardian, recorded 63,171,662 monthly online users. UK’s Independent took a big hit in the same month, losing 17.09% viewership to 13,126,707. Daily unique users dropped by 20.52% to 602,856.

Mail Online was also the most popular online newspaper in the world, for the second month in a row, according to comScore data, with 51.7 million unique users in January, ahead of The New York Times’ 47.9 million. News International’s Sun website continued to exhibit growth with 1,471,788 daily users and 24,055,155 monthly users, with increases of 9.9% and 8.69% respectively. The UK Telegraph was up 14% in usership to 2,458,826 for the month, with 48,292,476 total hits in 2011.

One might wonder how the Mail Online, which reads like a lower-middle brow tabloid became more popular than The New York Times on the web. After quick inspection, at least to me, most things on the site are clickable. Meaning, OF COURSE I want to know about Jennifer Aniston’s new obsession with laser therapy. What does that even mean? For her mind? After scrolling down a bit, it is clear that I want to read almost everything I’m seeing, which wouldn’t demand much concentration. And there are a lot of nice colors too. Very contrasty. But none of this mail is really “news,” for that matter. The opinions are fairly vague, there’s not much to see by the way of politics, and the stories are all acceptably offensive, meaning, I don’t see a reader actually getting angry and being put off by the content. The page seems detached to anything really, which is likely why it’s so popular. I like how this guy just grew out of his blueness:

  • Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Daytona 500 Viral Ad Shows The Driver Really Loves Diet Mountain Dew

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Daytona 500 Viral Ad Shows The Driver Really Loves Diet Mountain Dew

NASCAR is gearing up for the biggest race of the year, which also happens to be the first race of the year. The legendary Daytona 500 has been thrilling fans since 1959, and one the race’s most prominent participants loves Diet Mountain Dew so much that he’s willing to give up his car for it.

Well, he’s that overzealous in a new viral ad that’s being released today.

The ad won’t hit the airwaves until this weekend, close to the start of the big race. But it’s available online right now. A man squeals through his neighborhood in Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s #88 Diet Mountain Dew car. When he gets home, he has one hell of a story for his son:

Mountain Dew has been a sponsor of Dale Jr.’s #88 car since he joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2008. This year, he’ll be looking for his second Daytona 500 win.

“Diet Mountain Dew is off to a strong start in 2012, with solid growth and the news that we’ve passed the billion dollar sales milestone,” said Emily Silver, senior marketing manager, Diet Mountain Dew. “And, with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. on-board to help us spread the word about the great taste of Diet Mountain Dew, we only expect things to accelerate from here.”

Diet Mountain Dew is also announcing an online initiative called the Dew Crew. Fans can sign up at the Dew Crew site as well as participate on Facebook for a chance to win prizes and even get a chance to help make decisions for Earnhardt’s pit crew.

Mountain Dew, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and NASCAR are all getting some viral publicity out of this. But none of it matches one truck series driver who is racing this weekend with 2,600+ handles from his Twitter followers stuck to his truck.

  • Comcast Launches New ‘Mini-Hulu’

    Comcast Launches New ‘Mini-Hulu’

On Tuesday, Comcast launched Xfinity Streampix, a new streaming video subscription service . Steampix features movies and full seasons of TV shows, and comes bundled with certain TV/internet and TV/internet/voice packages, or can be added for $5/month for current Comcast TV customers.

Comcast’s licensing partners at launch include ABC/Disney, NBC Universal, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. and Cookie Jar, with some of the TV series featured being Lost, Married…with Children and The Office. Movies include The Big Lebowski, Ocean’s 11, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Streampix supports on-demand content for PCs, game consoles, tablets and smartphones, and AnyPlay, which allows customers stream live TV to multiple devices on their home networks.

Streampix is an ad-on service, cheap or free, but it’s catalog is a bit lacking compared to Netflix in regards to top movies, and doesn’t offer as many TV shows as Hulu Plus. The question is whether or not Comcast customers will ditch the aforementioned services to save a bit of money. Marcien Jenckles, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Video Services, Comcast, states, “Xfinity TV is a one-stop source for the most video entertainment on any screen and it just keeps getting better. Our goal is to consistently deliver greater value to our customers and to bring the best anytime, anywhere entertainment on multiple platforms. Streampix is another step moving TV Everywhere forward by giving customers access to an even greater library of popular choices to watch.”

Though Streampix is an add-on, combined with a cable TV service, it at least matches the amount of content Netflix and Hulu can offer. Interestingly, Porter Bibb, managing partner at Mediatech Capital Partners LLC, recently told Bloomberg Television that Comcast has “little confidence” in Streampix:

  • Daniel Von Bargen Of Seinfeld Attempts Suicide

You might know him as Mr. Kruger, George’s boss on the hit TV show Seinfeld. Monday morning Daniel Von Bargen attempted suicide with a gunshot to the temple. After the attempt, he called 911 for help. He sounds unbelievably clam as he speaks to the 911 operator:

“I’ve shot myself in the head … and I need help.”

“I was supposed to go to the hospital today, but I didn’t want to….so I shot myself.”

“I just shit in my pants.”

“I can’t open my eyes….I shot in my temple.”

“I was going to go there [the hospital], they were going to amputate at least a few toes.”

“The one leg has already been amputated and they were working on the other. I have no children and no wife and I’m retired…and I fucked it up.”

Apparently he was scheduled for surgery monday afternoon to have some toes amputated due to complications with his diabetes. His sisters were supposed to pick him up and take him to the hospital. He is 61 years old.

Only minutes into the brief 911 conversation police burst into the house and told Bargen not to move and to keep his hands up. Authorities asked if there were any other guns in the apartment, then the call was ended. He is currently in critical condition in a nearby Cincinnati hospital.

TMZ has provided this video of the 911 phone call:

  • Twitter: Sacha Baron Cohen Banned From Oscars?

Twitter: Sacha Baron Cohen Banned From Oscars?

Update: The Academy is now saying that they have not “banned” Cohen yet, per se. Rather, they are waiting to determine his intentions about promoting The Dictator at the awards.

Deadline reported that the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has pulled actor Sacha Baron Cohen‘s tickets from the 84th Academy Awards. Due to his plans to attend the ceremony, or at least the red carpet, in character as Admiral General Aladeen from his movie The Dictator, the Academy has decided to bump him entirely.

Cohen was invited to attend the Oscars due to his performance as Inspector Gustav in the Best Picture contender Hugo, a Paramount movie. Paramount told Deadline, “Unless they’re assured that nothing entertaining is going to happen on the Red Carpet, the Academy is not admitting Sacha Baron Cohen to the show.”

At this rate, however, with all the press that the mere proposal of the stunt is bringing, Cohen does not even have to do a stunt on the red carpet. In fact, his showing up in a traditional tuxedo and not causing a scene would be as big a news item as if he went rogue and defied the Academy.

The folks on Twitter had this to say about that:

  • Spotify Update Includes Gapless Playback And Crossfade

Spotify announced the launch of some new features for “gapless playback” and crossfade. The features come with an update to its desktop version that is rolling out this week.

Gapless playback enables songs to play right after one another without pause. The company says this is ideal for dance and classical music in particular, as well as live recordings and concept albums.

The feature will be switched on by default, but you can adjust it in the preferences.

The crossfade feature enables users to set tracks to fade out and the next to fade in. “You can select the exact number of seconds you want your songs to crossfade (from 1 to 12 seconds) by visiting your Spotify Preferences and flipping the ‘on’ switch,” the company says.

Crossfade will need to be turned on in preferences.

Spotify also shares a quote from DJ Paul Okenfold, who says, “I use Spotify daily. Many of my own releases are mixed so I’m delighted to hear Spotify will now offer gapless playback and crossfade so my fans can experience the mixes on Spotify in the way they normally do in the clubs.”

Other new features of the update include: faster artist browsing ,sorting improvements, a new save/restore feature for “now playing,” subscribe ,buddy list and favorites improvements, drag and drop fix for Windows, a “hide purchases” button for premium users, and offline ode via the Spotify menu.

  • The Beatles Launch Ringtones Exclusively Through iTunes

For those The Beatles fans who don’t know how to make their own ringtones or just want to spend more money on their favorite band, The Beatles are now offering ringtones based on their songs exclusively through iTunes.

The ringtones all last 30-seconds and come from 27 of the bands number one hits. Those hits include “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Help!,” “Let It Be,” “Come Together” and other hits.

The ringtones are priced at $1.29 each. While it may seem like a little steep for just a ringtone, you can rest easy knowing that your ringtones will be of much higher quality than any The Beatles ringtone your friend makes with their shoddy ringtone creator.

In all seriousness, why would you want to pay $1.29 for 30 seconds of a song when the full song is at the same price? I’m not here to question the band’s motives, but doesn’t this just seem like the people who handle The Beatles’ estate suddenly realizing that ringtones exist?

A ploy like this could have worked five years ago, but it’s so easy to make your own ringtones now that a marketing move like this makes little sense.

If you choose to buy the ringtones, more power to you. I’m just going to suggest you google “ringtone creator” and just save yourself some time and money.

  • Fan Trailer for John Carter Outdoes Disney’s Official Work

Fan Trailer for John Carter Outdoes Disney’s Official Work

As many of you know, WebProNews is a big supporter of user-generated content, especially when it takes an established property and makes it better. In fact, the user-generated era is producing some incredible content, as the tools of the Internet makes hosting and distribution so much easier than they’ve ever been before.

With that in mind, consider Disney’s troubles marketing their upcoming John Carter flick, which is based off of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars masterpiece. The problem is, if you listen to the word on the street is Disney hasn’t created very much buzz for the upcoming “blockbuster,” offering the public bland, generic John Carter trailers that fail to spark the imagination, as well as the desire to consume.

Well, thanks to a YouTube collective called “JohnCarterFiles,” we now have a much better example of how Disney should’ve approached this movie:

    Now compare that to Disney’s:

Apparently Disney thought that focusing on the action sequences was enough to entice the crowds, and considering America’s attraction to anything that’s shiny and tech-friendly, that’s understandable. Sometimes, however, luring them in with a good story still works. Or, as ToplessRobot.com puts it:

…all the trailers have gone from introducing the character and his journey and the alien cultures of Mars have to showing nothing but action scenes that make the movie look like some kind of combination Avatar and Attack of the Clones, which is not a compliment.

I think John Carter is going to be pretty good, if not great — I have a lot of trust in director Andrew Stanton — but Disney has just marketed this thing into the ground, and now no one seems interested. They need to do something else… like release this awesome fan-assembled trailer, which uses nothing but previously released footage, but put together in a way that makes the film more unique, more powerful and a lot more interesting.

What do you think? Does the fan trailer do a better job of capturing the mood of the story better than Disney’s? If so, why hasn’t Disney hired these guys to head up future marketing efforts?

  • Compare Your 40 Time With Rich Eisen, NFL Draft Prospects

The NFL Scouting Combine begins today (2/22) as teams get ready for the meat market-like approach to evaluating future NFL prospects, in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft. The Combine is popular event in the sports world, getting almost as much attention as the NFL Draft itself.

When you hear NFL pundits say the season never ends, this is what they are referring to.

One of the more popular/important activities of the NFL Scouting Combine is the 40-yard dash. Entire careers are made (or broken) based on the amount of time it takes these prospects to travel 40 yards as quickly as they can. Not only have careers been made, but the NFL Scouting Combine also offers the opportunity to create a legend. Just ask Chris Johnson after his 40 time was posted.

There is, of course, video of Johnson’s monumental dash:

Another legend that was born from the Combine’s 40-yard dash involves NFL Channel personality, Rich Eisen. In 2005, Eisen famously tried his luck at the infamous dash, complete with a suit and tie. His time? Well, let’s just say Chris Johnson’s legend is still safe. Now Eisen’s dash has become a yearly event, something the following video indicates quite well:

Now Eisen, along with the rest of the NFL family, is inviting you to do the same. His post has the details:

At any rate, the good folks at the NFL Network came up with this idea to have you to run in your work clothes at your work place, roll a camera on it and post the video. The best ones will air on NFL Network before I lace ‘em up again and make another molasses-like run at glory. Please, do not hurt yourself. And also do not cost yourself your job.

But, wherever you are, foreign or domestic, the one thing that you absolutely must do … is run.

Once the video is posted, Eisen recommends tweeting a link to his account (@RichEisen), the NFL’s (@NFL), or to the NFL Network (@NFLNetwork). Be sure to use the hashtag #RunRichRun.

Of course, the best and worst videos will be shown on the NFL Network, shortly before Eisen once again hurtles himself down the 40-yard distance. With that in mind, get to posting those 40-yard dash videos, if, for nothing else, to see how you stack up against future NFL pros, and, well, Rich Eisen, too. Considering how Eisen compared to Julio Jones (upcoming video), don’t get too discouraged if you’re miles away from Chris Johnson’s epic time:
