  • Use Your iPhone To Be In A New Pantera Video

Legendary heavy metal band Pantera, which fell apart prior to the 2004 shooting death of guitarist Darrell Abbott, have a previously unreleased song, which they are creating a video for, and they’re looking to the web to find fans to appear in it.

A message posted to the band’s Facebook page says:

We are looking for footage of our fans rockin out & moshing to their favorite Pantera song… as hard as they can! The fans that shred the hardest will get their mugs featured in the upcoming NEW PANTERA video for PISS, which is their final UNRELEASED song. Headbang with your friends, climb the walls of your bedroom, skate around the parking lot where you hang out…however you listen to metal, do it for your iPhone, Android, Flipcam, Bloggie, etc and send it to us! You must be over 18 to participate.

Submit a video file of you moshing and raging to your favorite Pantera song. It should just be 1-2 min of your absolute favorite song right in front of the camera. Please make sure to state your name and age at the beginning of the video so we can match it with your e-mail.

Its pretty interesting to see, given that Facebook and YouTube, let alone iPhones and Android did not exist when Pantera existed. For those of us who grew up listening to the band, it’s hard to believe it’s been that long.

This sort of thing might be common place to today’s generation of music fans, but it remains interesting to see older musicians embrace the web in such ways. It’s not all Metallica suing Napster.

    Hat tip to Roadrunnerrecords.com/Blabbermouth.net

Here’s a 15-second snippet of the song, which was recorded with the band’s Vulgar Display of Power LP (if it’s any indication of the entire thing, I see why they left it off the album):

  • President Obama At The NCAA Tournament Opening Round

Now that his Final Four picks have been made, it’s time for President Obama to see if his picks will make good or not. What better way than to take advantage of his position as leader of the free world and score choice tickets to the NCAA Tournament’s opening round game between Western Kentucky and Mississippi Valley State?

At least Obama and his guest, British Prime Minister David Cameron, were treated to an exciting finish to the game they were watching, as Western Kentucky stormed back from a 16-point deficit with about five minutes left in the game. It’s a good thing the dramatic comeback was included, because before the Hilltoppers showed signs of life, the game was a little underwhelming.

And that’s why they play 40 minute games. These contests aren’t over at the 35-minute mark.

During the halftime break, President Obama and his guest were interviewed by Clark Kellogg. While the portion simply confirmed Obama’s position as an informed basketball fan, it was interesting to see the President be dwarfed by the person interviewing him. For those keeping score at home, Kellogg comes in as a 6-7 giant who used to dominate the paint while he played for Ohio State. Obama, according to Google, is 6-1, and the six-inch difference was quite noticeable.

It’s safe to say Kellogg is probably the tallest person to interview President Obama, maybe ever. As for Obama’s appearance at the tournament’s opening game, unfortunately, some can’t seem to separate politics from sports, something the comments of this particular YouTube video–also from the WKY/MSVS basketball game–demonstrate quite well:

@nicnini1 i agree that is something i would never do typically, but he was provoked! that’s the only reason i made my comment. did you hear obama at halftime? he had the audacity during an interview at halftime to criticize the shot selection and the offensive scheme. obama is not the coach and he should keep his opinions to himself. i dont blame the kid for staring him down and thinking to himself, “what do you think of THAT shot, pres?” i would have done the EXACT SAME THING.

Apparently, for some, the only way Obama can win is to not say or do anything.

  • Age Difference No Issue For Dick Van Dyke

Age Difference No Issue For Dick Van Dyke

You’re as young as you feel and evidently Dick Van Dyke is feeling less than half his age these days. The legendary comedic actor who is best known for playing in the movies, “Bye Bye Birdie,” and “Mary Poppins” and for his series, “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” celebrated Leap Day this February by getting married. Van Dyke turns 86 this year and his new bride and current Make-Up Artist, Arlene Silver will be 40.

According to Van Dyke, “It was kinda on the spur of the moment, we just decided Leap Day would be the best time to do it.” Van Dyke and Make-Up Artist, Silver met in Los Angeles at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards in 2006. Van Dyke was previously married for 36 years and was divorced in 1984 after a long separation. He lived with Michelle Triola, a long time companion for over 30 years until she died in 2009. Van Dyke has four children.

She brings a lot of light into his life,” Van Dyke’s publicist, Bob Palmer told ABC News. “I’m not a loner. I have to have a life partner. I found the perfect one,” Van Dyke said in an interview about his new bride. “The last couple of years we kind of fell in love and she keeps up with me,” added the Octogenarian groom.

The newly married Make-Up Artist, now mate Sliver got the final word in their interview with RumorFix, “He’s the happiest person I have ever met. He’s got an infectious spirit.”

  • Raquel Welch At 71: One Of The Hottest Women Of All Time

Raquel Welch At 71: One Of The Hottest Women Of All Time

Raquel Welch, born Jo Raquel Tejada, seventy one years ago in Chicago is an American actress, an author and an iconic sex symbol. This past December, according to Men’s Health, Raquel is one of the hottest women of all time, coming in second out of the top one hundred listed. For those of you who can’t help wondering, Jennifer Aniston came in first (not Marilyn Monroe) on the list of the top one hundred hottest women of all time.

The iconic sex symbol Welch has had a remarkable career in Hollywood spanning over five decades. Her image has always been that of a sexy woman in control, not a giggly innocent girl or an up-to-no-good, naughty temptress. According to her recent interview in Men’s Health, she describes herself as “just another American actress with a nice rack.” Welch has had a recent retrospective of her career at New York’s Lincoln Center entitled, “Cinematic Goddess: American Sex Symbol,” in which she was credited with helping to transform America’s feminine ideal. This month, she’ll be guest starring on the hit CBS drama CSI: Miami.

One of Welch’s most famous and memorable movies, “One Million Years, B.C.,” featured Raquel in an unforgettable and never before seen fur bikini. The curvy beauty and her pre-historic outfit were immortalized on a poster in 1966. You can buy it on eBay for $675 if you’re interested. According to Welch, the actual fur bikini from the movie is currently in mothballs waiting to be hung in the Smithsonian museum.

In her recent interview with Men’s Health Raquel spoke about how sexiness comes from having some mystery. “It’s just dehumanizing. And I have to honestly say, I think this era of porn is at least partially responsible for for it. Where is the anticipation and the personalization? It’s all pre-fab now. You have these images coming at you unannounced and unsolicited. It just gets to be so plastic and phony to me.”

  • Olsen Twins Quit Acting, Twitter Reacts

Olsen Twins Quit Acting, Twitter Reacts

Do you remember the cute baby Michelle from the family sitcom Full House? Well, if you didn’t already know, Michelle was actually played by two girls named Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. The Full House sitcom made these two girls well known for the show, and any time that you ask someone about the Olsen twins, the immediate reaction and association would be their role in Full House.

Ever since Full House ended back in 1995, the Olsen twins (Mary Kate and Ashley) grew up and continued their acting career into their teenage years with their own TV show titled Mary Kate and Ashley In Action which spanned from 2001 to 2002. They also have been involved with the Showtime channel drama Weeds in 2007.

Apart from the twins’ acting career, Mary Kate and Ashley have also been involved within the fashion industry, creating their own brands of clothing called The Row and Olsenboye for JCPenney.

According to the Huffington Post, the Olsen twins have announced that they are quitting the acting scene to focus more on their fashion careers. Ashley had the following statement pertaining to their resignation from the big screen:

“I don’t have to be a pretty face. I’ve done that, but now it’s important and liberating to be on the other side of the lens. I don’t like to be the center of attention anymore.”

Even though the Olsen twins are quitting the Hollywood acting world, their sister Elizabeth is starting up her own acting career and being independent from her old sisters.

The Twitter community has been active with their reactions to this news, and I have provided some of their mixed-reaction tweets below:

  • Rush Limbaugh Losing Radio Show Crown To Huckabee?

Since Rush Limbaugh has been under fire for his comments about Sandra Fluke, it hasn’t just been advertisers who are heading for the hills. People who had supported Limbaugh in the past are starting to wonder what he’s up to. Many of them have grown increasingly uncomfortable with what he says on his show sometimes. But, In the 12:00-3:00 time slot, Limbaugh is the only game in town.

    Until now.

Starting April 9, 2012, Gov. Mike Huckabee is throwing his hat into the arena. His new radio show will air in exactly the same time slot as Limbaugh on the Cumulus radio networks. Huckabee’s aim to unseat Limbaugh is apparent from his shows tag line: More Conversation. Less Confrontation.

Rush Limbaugh has a huge conservative fan base that are used to him adding humor and very blunt talk when discussing his point of view. Some who only listen occasionally don’t see the humor and take everything he says literally. They also don’t appreciate the blunt talk. Prior to Limbaugh and Fox News and then the internet there weren’t conservatives with national platforms in the media.

Rush’s attacks on liberalism daily has worn on liberals over the years, hence the backlash over his comment about Sandra Fluke. This is their opportunity to strike back and coincidentally Huckabee’s opportunity to step up to the plate for conservatives with a nicer and gentler radio program. Huckabee plans to challenge Rush by attracting those that seek a less pointed discussion.

Huckabee aims to soften that rhetoric, get people talking again. And, his brand of conservative approach could be the very place that advertisers, radio stations and frustrated conservatives can go as an alternative to Limbaugh’s heated rhetoric. Huckabee could even make the notion of conservative talk radio palatable to progressives who don’t mind a good debate, so long as it is civil. Time will tell.

John Carter Big Flop At Box Office

Disney put a lot into their newest big box office hope the sci-fi action flick “John Carter!” With a huge advertising budget and a famous $250 million dollar budget, Things didn’t turn out the way they had hoped. • Netflix “Just For Kids” Offers Safe Programming On PS3

Netflix has made quite a name for itself–despite some rocky patches, as an easy, convenient way to watch television shows and movies from home, and in the past few years they have made attempts at being even more user-friendly with their streaming service, which allows a viewer to get their entertainment directly through game devices and the internet. While some subscribers have issues with the latest changes, as reported earlier, many find it extremely easy to use.

Unfortunately, this also means more concern for parents as to what their children have access to. Parental controls allow for some safeguards, but a new section unveiled by the company in 2011 called “Netflix Just For Kids” created a completely safe and child-friendly environment without the use of parental controls. And today they announced that the program is available not only through Nintendo Wii, Apple TV, and their own website, but also on PS3.

Since the program was launched last August, more than one billion hours of children’s programming has been viewed, and when you consider that those are all commercial-free hours, that number seems even bigger. Filled with popular Nickelodeon shows as well as old-school cartoons from the ’90s, PBS programs, and Disney shows, the “Just For Kids” channel of Netflix is as much fun for parents as it is for kids, especially since there’s no violence, nudity, language, or any of the other questionable things cable television offers.

Netflix reported last October that over half of all streams are of television shows rather than movies, and the latest innovations in streaming have probably helped that number along as children use their gaming systems to watch their favorite television shows.

  • Rush Limbaugh’s Advertiser Troubles Via SNL

Rush Limbaugh’s Advertiser Troubles Via SNL

Rush Limbaugh’s recent remarks about University of Georgetown student Sandra Fluke, calling her a “slut” and a “prostitute”, have continued to come back to haunt him. He blogged a Saturday apology, then explained to his listeners on Monday that he had apologized because he realized that his statements made him sound like a liberal. The debate rages on about whether this comment and the fallout from it might be the end for Limbaugh. His opponents have organized an advertiser boycott that claims to have taken out dozens of ad-buyers. Limbaugh says those local ad buys are inconsequential to him and will not affect his business. Our analysis of that statement says it is not true. Local ad buys affect the local stations, which cannot sustain the kind of advertiser exodus that is happening. At WABC radio recently, the flagship station for Limbaugh’s program, over half of Limbaugh’s commercial spots were replaced with free public service announcements, a sure sign in the radio world that advertisers were leaving and staying away.

Some businesses are coming forward to say that they will gladly advertise with Limbaugh, but he is denying those since they are for such websites as AshleyMadison, which promisses to help people find a way to cheat on their spouses.

Into this fracas steps Saturday Night Live, famous for its impersonations of other political figures, including President Obama and Sarah Palin. The cold open piece pokes fun at the advertiser troubles Limbaugh has. SNL cast member Taran Killiam plays Limbaugh in the piece.

  • Warner Brothers Still Struggles With That Whole Ownership Concept

Warner Brothers archaic, “we don’t like the idea of distributing our content in a non-physical format” has been well documented at WebProNews and beyond. Basically, Warner Brothers does not want your renting their home video content, they’d prefer you buy it on DVD. Furthermore, after you buy one of their DVDs, that’s it. They have never supported the concept of ripping the contents of the DVD to other devices, at least, not until now.

Provided you consider Warner Brothers’ new approach to converting a DVD into a digital file progress. Many don’t, including the collective at PublicKnowledge.org. To demonstrate just how much they can adapt to the digital revolution, Warner Brothers has introduced perhaps the most cumbersome “Disc-to-Digital” program, one that actually dissuades people from using, which is perhaps the WB’s goal all along.

Does this mean that Warner Brothers is releasing ripping software–or, well hardware, I guess–to the public to facilitate this transformation process? Of course not. That would be entirely too easy. No, what Warner Brothers proposes is something entirely different and absolutely inconvenient. Public Knowledge has the details:

…the first phase in this process is to let DVD owners bring their DVDs to a store that will handle the digital conversion. Tsujihara described this process as allowing consumers to convert their libraries “easily, safely and at reasonable prices.”

You did read that last paragraph correctly. The head of Warner Home Entertainment Group thinks that an easy, safe way to convert movies you already own on DVD to other digital formats is to take your DVDs, find a store that will perform this service, drive to that store, find the clerk who knows how to perform the service, hope that the “DVD conversion machine” is not broken, stand there like a chump while the clerk “safely” converts your movie to a digital file that may only play on studio-approved devices, drive home, and hope everything worked out. Oh, and the good news is that you would only need to pay a reasonable (per-DVD?) price for this pleasure. [Emphasis added]

To demonstrate this process in action, Public Knowledge has also put together an incredibly handy diagram of how the process works:

    (image)

Considering the fact we has consumers have been able to rip music CDs to other devices for, well, longer than some have been around, the movie industry’s approach to ripping content from DVDs is laughable, but it’s not going away anytime soon (PDF). I suppose Warner Brothers could be credited for at least being open to the idea, but the method they want consumers to use is absolutely absurd.

Maybe one day these movie studios will understand the concept of ownership and digital distribution a little better than they do. Until then, there are still copies of DVDShrink floating around the Internet. Just flex those Google muscles a little and you should be rewarded with the appropriate exe file.

In others news, it’s clear Frank Zappa and his awesome t-shirt were well ahead of their time.

  • Breaking Dawn – Part 2 Teaser Trailer Debuts with The Hunger Games on March 23rd

The Breaking Dawn – Part 2 teaser trailer will debut exclusively in theaters with The Hunger Games on March 23rd. The final chapter in the Twilight Saga will be released in theaters on November, 16, 2012.

I have never read the Twilight series but I really enjoyed how dark the last film was. Bella’s gross appearance and morbid delivery will never let me forget Twilight and I applaud Stephenie Meyer for revealing the danger behind pregnancy, even if the example is a bit extreme. The cinematography and soundtrack also enhanced its George Romero feel.

Academy Award winner Bill Condon directed both the first and second part of the two-part finale starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. The project, based on the fourth novel in author Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series, was written by Melissa Rosenberg with Wyck Godfrey, Karen Rosenfelt and Stephenie Meyer producing.

The decision to debut the teaser with the Release of The Hunger Games is a wise one. The Hunger Games is based off of a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. The movie is about a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem (former United States) and is fueled by 16 year old heroine, Katniss Everdeen. Katniss volunteers to take the place of her little sister in the Hunger Games, an annual event where one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of the 12 districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle in which only one person can survive.

The cast includes rising starlet Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song), Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Wes Bentley (creepy bag guy from American beauty) among others.

I will definitely be going to the theaters on the 23rd to get a taste of the Twilight to come and a scoop of Hemsworth.

  • Popcornflix Lauches Free Movie Apps for iPad and iPhone

Popcornflix, a digital movie platform that allows people to watch movies for free at all times, just announced the launch of its iPad and iPhone apps. The apps can be downloaded for free at the iTunes App store. The digital site is available online and on Roku. The power of this service is that it gives cinescapists access to their favorite films and actors through their mobile devices.

Users can browse and select from over 350 independent and mainstream films and watch them instantly. Their selection is projected to grow to over 1,000 films by the end of 2012 and will add more movies every day.

The way you can search for movies is very similar to the system used by Netflix; you can search by actor, director, title, and genre; or search through the new arrivals and most popular categories, among others.

Popcornflix iPhone and iPad apps also allow users to share the apps with friends by posting a link instantly to their Facebook or Twitter account or via an email notice. This will create a personalized list of movie recommendations to help users find films more suited for their demographic.

Instead of coming attractions, each film will have pre-roll, spot, and banner ads from affiliates that support the platform and make this service free to users.

The online version of Popcornflix is available in 10 countries, including the US, Canada and the UK. Popcornflix is also available on Roku in the US. The service will expand internationally in the coming months; additional distribution outlets will include web-enabled TVs, DVD players and set-top boxes – virtually everywhere movie viewing platforms are available.

Last Tuesday, I announced the Dancing with the Stars Season 14 cast members here on WebProNews, and I am very excited for this season to get underway with the two-hour special on March 19th on ABC. Robert B. Sherman, Disney Songwriter Dies at 86

On March 6th, 2012, the musical world was saddened to learn the death of Robert Bernard Sherman, a savant songwriter who was well known for his works with various Disney films and productions. Sherman died at the age of 86, and was announced to the world via his son Jeff’s Facebook statement provided below:

“My Dad, Robert B. Sherman, passed away tonight in London. He went peacefully after months of truly valiantly fending off death. He loved life and his dear heart finally slowed to a stop when he could fight no more.”

    (Source: Hollywood.com)

Robert B. Sherman worked closely with his brother Richard M. Sherman on most of his productions, and is most well known for songs included in Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The song that Robert has received the most recognition for is the catchy tune of It’s A Small World (After All).

I have provided some sentimental tweets from the Twitter community as they say their goodbye to this unique and talented songwriter.

  • Charlie Sheen, DirecTV and Fiat Capitalize On Once “Winning” Image

Fiat and DirecTV have banked on the visibly aged Charlie Sheen’s bad boy reputation in the hopes of boosting their sales.

Sheen capitalizes on his wild past and cheesy 80s movie personas by driving a tiny Fiat 500 Abarth in the middle of a house while a Super Bowl party is going in the following advertisement. If Batman decided to give up his cape and become a clown, this is the car he would drive. Stepping out of the vehicle to embrace a woman young enough to be his daughter, viewers observe that he is wearing an ankle monitor and forced giggles ensue.

“Not all bad boys are created equal” as stated on this Fiat ad, but I cannot help but notice that Sheen is becoming a dirty old man icon and destroying any chances he might have of resuscitating his career.

Charlie Sheen is so over! After watching this DirecTV ad I am going to go home and smash my Platoon DVD into a thousand pieces.

Oh, and before I forget, the voiceover on the DirecTV ad totally rips off the Dos Equis “most interesting man” commercials.

Only 170,000 people have viewed these commercials since yesterday which might indicate that Sheen is losing steam faster that Fiat and DirecTV realize.
