CES 2012: DISH announces new Broadband and DVR services

Somebody is finally taking on the righteous task of bringing faster internet to those in rural areas and that somebody is DISH Network.

DISH Network announced a partnership with ViaSat Inc. at CES today to bring next-generation satellite broadband to homes across America bundled with their satellite television service. The company also announced a new DVR system that will bring impressive storage and recording abilities to their service.

The new satellite broadband service, called DISH Broadband, is the most appealing new option just because it’s the fastest satellite offered yet in the United States and it’s squarely aimed at rural Americans who can’t get access to broadband Internet.

“This is one more example of DISH meeting the needs of consumers,” DISH CEO Joe Clayton said. “The market potential for this new Internet service is substantial given the nearly eight million to 10 million mostly rural American households that are unserved and millions more left with slower broadband alternatives.”

The service will cost $79.98 per month with an installation starting at $99. ViaSat will handle the satellite delivery services while DISH will handle the billing and tech support.

During the same conference, DISH also took out time to announce their new set-top boxes Hopper and Joey. The Kangaroo names are intentional as that is the mascot for their new devices.

The Hopper is the main unit DVR that features three satellite TV tuners, a 2TB hard drive that can store up to 2,000 hours of video content, bluetooth for linking to devices like wireless headphones and picture-in-picture for watching any two channels at the same time.

The Joey is the smaller set-top box that connects to the Hopper unit. This allows for the most interesting feature of the new set-top box in that it can deliver up to four different on-demand or recorded shows to four rooms in the house. This essentially allows every member of the family to watch something different any time they please.

The other big feature of Hopper is PrimeTime Anytime which records every PrimeTime television show on every major network. This also means that the Hopper DVR can record up to six shows at once.

The Hopper will also offer the usual plethora of TV apps like Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, photo sharing and games.

While the new Internet service is definitely appealing, especially to those in rural communities, it’s the new DVR and set-top boxes that create the most excitement. It’s hard not to be in love with a system that can record and play back that many programs simultaneously throughout a household.

  • Saudi Women Post Scandalous Pictures on Facebook

The following is an image that may be seen on the Facebook profile of your everyday, modern Saudi woman:

Arab women are following a new trend – posting pictures of random body parts on Facebook.

The pictures show a glimpse of skin that may belong to an arm or a foot. Or from the more brazen vixen, you may see a fingernail. According to a report by Arab News, “…[This]…is an emerging trend among young Saudi women…”.

Although this may hardly seem like the next Women’s Liberation Movement, Arab News reports that 48 percent of Saudi internet users are women under the age of 25.

Does this mean that Saudi women are closer to living the Western lifestyle? Hardly. The statistic does show that this group of women are moving towards modernity – but more technologically than socially.

Facebook may be providing these women with an outlet in which to free themselves of sexual oppression, but they are taking rather conservative steps in doing so.

Nobody is going to be running around the desert in a bikini anytime soon. The women who post these pictures will often obscure their body parts with glitter or present themselves under a different name.

“Most women on social networking sites use fake names. By displaying parts of their body and sometimes in glittering colors, young women must be achieving some sort of gratification or release of their emotions while anonymity guarantees them immunity from social censure or parental displeasure,” said Amal Al-Saleh, a university graduate to Arab News. She added that many women prefer to present images resembling singers.

You are probably more familiar with this next image as an example of what is acceptable in Saudi culture:

Unfortunately, this will probably remain to be the extent of how we see Saudi women for some time to come. Moreover, the same report states that Saudi men have expressed outrage over the way these women are using social media. Some are upset that Arabs use social media at all.

So what method do these men take to express such outrage? Well, they appear on national television, and publicly declare to the world that women shouldn’t be using social media.

It seems that some men have put some forethought into how this problem should be resolved. An electronics professor explains to the press that the problem Arabs are facing with women using social media, is simply a result of women having too much time on their hands.

He claims that women are just really bored, either as a result of ‘spinsterhood’ or unemployment. His solution? Give these women more jobs. Keep them busy with work! That way they will spend less time on Facebook, thus less time corrupting their value system.

  • CES 2012: LG OLED TV Is 4mm Thick

CES 2012: LG OLED TV Is 4mm Thick

USA Today reported from CES 2012 that LG Electronics has unveiled a new skinny 55-inch Organic LED TV. The set is thin. That’s an understatement. The set is 4mm thick. It weighs 16.5 pounds. Did I mention it’s a 55-inch set? And does 3D?

    From LG’s press release:

“What sets LG’s TV picture apart from other OLED TVs is its 4-Color Pixels and Color Refiner which work together to generate natural and accurate colors that are sharp and consistent. The 4-Color Pixels feature allows for more accurate color depiction by using a set of four colors (red, green blue and white) in comparison to the RGB setup used by conventional OLED TVs. Color Refiner helps provide consistency in colors from a wider viewing angle via an LG algorithm which improves and refines hues and tones.

Boasting an infinite contrast ratio, LG’s OLED TV exhibits vivid colors and the smallest details. In turn, colors and details throughout an entire image are preserved with utmost clarity and sharpness, even when displaying scenes with dark lighting. Such color capabilities are technically impossible with LED and LCD display panels. And at around 1,000 times faster than LED/LCD displays, LG’s OLED TV are capable of showing crystal clear motion.

LG’s 3D OLED TV is equipped with LG’s Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) CINEMA 3D technology, providing users with a comfortable 3D experience. And FPR-type 3D glasses are less expensive and lighter than active shutter 3D glasses. They also don’t need batteries or to be recharged.”

Strap your Wii remote on tight. You don’t wanna hit this thing.

  • CES 2012: LG Smart Upgrader Challenges Roku Streaming Stick

Last week I wrote about Roku’s new Streaming Stick that aims to transform any TV into a Smart TV. But, there was a hitch, the device only worked on the new MHL-enabled HDMI ports.

Today at CES, LG Electronics unveiled its new LG SmartTV Upgrader, which appears to have no such restriction. According to the LG press release:

“The Upgrader gives any television with an HDMI input the ability to access endless amounts of content including movies, sports, television programming, music and premium applications, all through an easy to navigate user interface…

Building upon the pioneering NetCast Entertainment Access offering, the LG SmartTV platform provides access to endless entertainment options from providers including*:
    • VUDU– Allows consumers to buy or rent from an extensive catalog of more than 2,000 high-definition movies and TV titles without monthly fees or additional hardware. It also is the only online service to offer movies in 1080p.

    • Netflix – Updated with Netflix 2.0, consumers can now stream thousands of movies without a PC.

    • YouTube – Instantly streams millions of Web videos directly from the Internet.

    • CinemaNow – Allows consumers to browse from the CinemaNow premium content catalog and instantly stream purchased or rented movies and popular TV shows.

    • Hulu Plus – Subscribers have access to back seasons or full runs of some of TV’s greatest shows.

    • Amazon Video on Demand – Allows consumers to view more than 75,000 hit movies and television shows instantly.

  • Tom Hanks’ “Electric City” Set To Debut This Spring On Yahoo

Tom Hanks’ “Electric City” Set To Debut This Spring On Yahoo

As Yahoo takes the plunge into original scripted content, they probably couldn’t have picked a better person to hold their hand.

That’s because the first series the company will distribute comes from Hollywood favorite Tom Hanks. According to the AP, his program, “Electric City,” will debut this Spring, streaming exclusively on Yahoo.

Hanks has been working on Electric City for years, and after a couple mutations, the project has wound up as an animated series (original ideas for the series involved puppets).

Electric City is set to feature a post-apocalyptic landscape, and focus on a futuristic-city that is described as “seemingly peaceful” (sounds compellingly sinister?) The show will tackle various socially conscious themes like energy consumption as well as hot-button topics like freedom of information and crime in a future world.

The entire series has a 90-minute running time, similar to the length of a feature film. But it will stream in segments – 20 different episodes, each about 3 or 4 minutes long. Hanks’ signature is stamped all over the project, as he sports writing and producing credits and will even voice the lead character in the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Exact financials have yet to be disclosed, but Yahoo’s executive VP Ross Levinsohn joked,

“This is the most money we’ve ever spent on a scripted show. Of course, it’s also the first scripted show.”

Yahoo is in the process of expanding their reach in the world of content. In December, they announced the launch of a new comedy channel that will kick off with an exclusive show from Bill Maher, called “CrazyStupidPolitics” and will broadcast from Silicon Valley.

Electric City will debut as a full-fledged internet series, equipped with interactive features and “social media connectivity.” It will also be available in multiple languages, including French and Spanish.

  • Charles Addams And Addams Family Celebrated With Google Doodle

There’s a new Google doodle up today, and you may recognize the characters in it as Gomez, Morticia, Cousin It, Lurch, Wednesday, Pugsley and Uncle Fester, collectively known as The Addams Family.

It’s the hundred birthday of creator Charles Addams, an American cartoonist who introduced the world to these characters in the 30s, with cartoons originally appearing in The New Yorker. Eventually, of course, the characters would come to life on Television, and later still, in film.

    The Addams Family

Addams died in 1988 of a heart attack at 76.

For the doodle itself, Google credits The Tee & Charles Addams Foundation (where the above image came from as well).

Note: The foundation’s site appears to be currently experiencing the doodle effect, and is experiencing periods of downtime.

  • Hi-Def, Smartphones, et al Rule Our Lives!

Lorraine Baines: Our first television set. Dad just picked it up today. Do you have a television?
Marty McFly: Well, yeah! You know we have… two of them.
Milton Baines: Wow! You must be rich!
Stella Baines: Oh, honey, he’s teasing you. Nobody has two television sets.

According to a new report released by the Nielsen people (who peek in your windows to see what you watch on TV), almost one in three U.S. households that have a television actually owns – wait for it – FOUR or more!

I am guessing that one is an HDTV hanging in the living room that they are still making payments on. Another is in the parents’ bedroom. One hooked to an older XBox in the kids’ room. Another is a monster CRT in the garage that still works but is hooked to nothing because Dad hasn’t yet bought that converter box and rabbit ears but doesn’t want to trash it and God knows no one will buy that dinosaur on Craigslist. /digression

290 million Americans owns at least one television. There are only 307 million people in the U.S., including babies and hobos. We are entertainment and information junkies.

And we don’t stop with TVs. We love smartphones, tablets, anything we can get our hands on.

211 million Americans are online (at home) and 116 million of us carry that web-access around with us mobile. And what do we do with all that access? I’m glad you asked.

In terms of smart phone use, it breaks down like this…

And, as far as the apps we use on our phones, here’s the skinny…

So, we got TV and we got Internet. And, we got them at the same time! Ain’t that just like a guy?

    Nope, that’s just like a woman…

Don’t shoot the messenger. You know you do it.

  • Apple TV, Google TV – Is 2012 the Year They Take Off?

We’ve heard it before and nothing happened, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t, right? I’m referring to the idea of Internet TV that has, up to this point, failed to really take off. But, is 2012 the year that this trend could change? There is a lot of speculation and rumors that indicate that it could.

The concept behind Internet TV is fascinating but many of the early offerings lacked luster. The products that have taken off are the Internet video boxes such as Roku, Boxee, and Apple TV.

Do you currently use an Internet TV device? If so, are you happy with it?

This year, the opportunity is said to lie in TV sets with built-in Internet connectivity. The reason for this is largely a result of the shift in consumer behavior. The trend has gone from viewing online entertainment through a desktop to viewing it through mobile and tablet devices. From all indications, the next shift will be to the living room.

At this time, Samsung, Sony, Sharp, LG, and Panasonic all have connected TVs on the market, but there are reports that Apple will release a TV set later this year. In addition, based on what Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said at the Le Web conference, Google TV will be integrated into the majority of televisions by this summer.

(He begins talking about Google TV around 38 minutes in)

In order for 2012 to be the year for Web TVs to become mainstream, consumers will have to be educated on what they are. For this to happen, the consumer electronics companies will have to use effective marketing strategies to create a need for consumers to want connected TVs.

If this happens, it will, no doubt, open many doors for hardware makers, content providers, and others. However, there are questions that remain such as, what will happen to the Internet video boxes that have been, up to this point, primarily responsible for the success of Internet? While this could be a very real concern, it appears that companies such as Roku have already taken this into consideration.

Earlier this week, the company announced the Roku Streaming Stick that plugs directly into a TV and transforms it into a Smart TV. Users will be able to purchase the Roku Streaming Stick later this year, but it will also be available as a bundle with Best Buy’s Insignia TV. According to the company blog, Roku is working to secure more partnerships with other TV manufacturers.

While only time will tell if 2012 is, in fact, the year that connected TVs take off, hopefully, we’ll have a better idea of what to expect after next week’s Consumer Electronics Show.

Would you be willing to buy a connected TV this year? Let us know.

  • Amazon’s LoveFilm Strikes Streaming Deals With BBC And ITV

Amazon announced some new TV streaming deals for its LoveFilm product.

After owning 42% of the company, Amazon acquired the remaining shares of LoveFilm, a European Netflix-like company, last year. Since then, the company has been making deals to expand the service’s streaming catalog.

Last month, Amazon signed a multi-year agreement with Sony to give members exclusive streaming access to new and forthcoming Sony Pictures TV and film titles. Other recent deals were made with Warner Bros., Entertainment One, StudioCanal, Disney, Momentum and Lionsgate.

Today, Amazon announced deals with BBC Worldwide and ITV.

The BBC deal will give members streaming access to content like Doctor Who, Life On Mars, Spooks, Whitechapel, Planet Earth, and plenty of other shows and documentaries.

LoveFilm CEO Simon Calver says, “We are thrilled to be bringing together great British TV content with Europe’s leading film subscription service. This gives LOVEFiLM an even more powerful, unique offering of instant programming for our members to view across a growing number of platforms, for one low monthly price.”

Lisa Rousseau, Head of UK and Ireland, Sales & Distribution, BBC Worldwide added, “We’ve had a content partnership with LOVEFiLM for several years now and it’s great to see this evolve digitally. We’re delighted to give LoveFilm’s subscribers the opportunity to instantly watch their favourite British shows, wherever and whenever they wish, alongside a diverse range of great programmes and films.”

The ITV deal gives LoveFilm members streaming access to titles from the the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster, including Marchlands, Above Suspicion, Prime Suspect, Inspector Morse, Cold Feet, and Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

“We are delighted to be working with LoveFilm to bring a wide range of ITV’s best loved programmes to their subscribers,” said ITV Director of Pay and Distribution, Martin Goswami. “Partnering with LoveFilm’s Instant service is a great example of how ITV is starting to drive new revenue streams by distributing its content across multiple platforms.”

LoveFilm’s instant service is currently available to over 175 Internet-enabled devices, including PCs, PS3, iPad, Xbox 360, and numerous Blu-Ray players and connected TVs.

  • Warner Brothers Doubles Netflix DVD Window

When it rains it pours for Netflix, apparently. Yesterday we brought you news that HBO would stop selling bulk DVDs of its programming to Netflix at a discount. Now, apparently, Warner Brothers has reached a new agreement with Netflix, Redbox, and Blockbuster that doubles the amount of time the two companies have to wait before they can buy Warner Brothers’s new releases. Now Netflix and Redbox customers will have to wait 56 days – nearly two months – before they can check out Warner Brothers’s new content.

The current 28-day new release window came about in June of 2010, as the result of an agreement whereby Netflix accepted the gap between home video release and rental availability in exchange for rights to stream more of the studios’ content. This time around, Warner Brothers has increased the window without giving anything at all back.

This latest move against Netflix, Redbox, and Blockbuster follows a similar move against Blockbuster in October. Without asking permission first, Blockbuster made several new releases from Warner Brothers available for rent on the same day that they were available for sale. Warner Brothers retaliated by applying Netflix’s 28-day gap to Blockbuster.

As DVD sales and theater attendance have dropped in recent years, Hollywood’s increasing panic has driven the search for a scapegoat. Since the answer could not possibly have anything to do with increasing ticket and DVD prices and decreasing movie quality, the industry’s eye has fallen on Netflix (and the movie rental industry in general), and on piracy. As they combat the latter with legislation, they have been using every means at their disposal to make life as difficult for Netflix as possible, apparently believing that people who cannot rent a movie will simply go buy it instead. This is just the most recent of the entertainment industry’s efforts to resist the march of technological progress. Nearly every advance in entertainment technology – from the radio in the 1920s to VCRs and casette tapes in the ‘70s and ‘80s – has supposedly heralded the collapse of the entertainment industry.

Unfortunately, we can probably expect the entertainment industry to continue its staunch opposition to the forward march of technology. Which means that Netflix, Hulu, Redbox, Bitttorrent, and pretty much any means of accessing content that doesn’t line Hollywood’s pockets will continue to be the bad guy for the foreseeable future.

What do you think of Warner Brothers’s decision to increase the release window? Sound off in the comments.

  • Roku Shrinks the World To a Keychain

Roku announced today that they are packing everything they have done heretofore into a device the size of a pack of gum.

    Well, almost.

The Roku Streaming Stick is about the size of a regular thumb drive. It will feature built-in Wi-Fi, processor, memory and software. You plug it into the HDMI port on a TV and “instantly transform it into a Smart TV” (from Roku’s press release).

That’s pretty cool. But, notice, they did not say *any* TV. That turns out to be the catch. As Roku explains:

“The Roku Streaming Stick will plug into MHL-enabled HDMI ports on TVs. MHL is a new standard that uses the HDMI connector on TVs to deliver power and other critical elements for the streaming experience.”

The MHL-enabled HDMI port may well become the standard in the near-future. They have been adopted by many manufacturers. But, chances are, you don’t have it yet.

And, of course, such a stick does not have a USB port for further expansibility like other Roku boxes have.

But, even so, it’s pretty cool to be moving toward a keychain-sized solution that can be used with many television sets in the future. Plus, who wants to replace their TV as often as their phone? With this solution, Roku aims to allow you to update capability without having to change your set.

Once MHL-enabled ports become standard, it will be nice to be able to take your Roku capability anywhere: vacation condos, hotels, etc. And, it’s easy to grab on your way out the door when your girlfriend tells you she’s had enough of your goldbricking and has called the cops to remove you from the premises.

  • Lilyhammer, New Netflix-Exclusive Show, To Debut In February

Netflix announced the premiere of a new original series called Lilyhammer, set for February 6 of this year.

The company describes it as “a gripping fish-out-of-water story” set in Norway. It stars Steven Van Zandt, of Sopranos (and Bruce Springsteen video “Glory Days”) fame.

The plot involves a New York mobster going into witness protection after ratting on his boss. Netflix explains, “A sports fan, Frank wants to make his new life in Lillehammer, the Norwegian town that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics – or as he calls it ‘Lilyhammer.’ Frank has visions of a paradise of ‘clean air, fresh white snow and gorgeous broads’ far away from the temptations of the Big Apple and from mob hit men. Reality, of course, turns out to be spectacularly different.”

    Here’s the trailer:

“I am very careful with my choices and this project was so exciting to me because of the wonderful writing, the rich characters and the fascinating culture of Norway,” says Van Zandt, who also serves as Executive Producer. “Netflix is the perfect home for such a unique show.”

This isn’t Netflix’s first foray into exclusive programming, though it does come before the previously announced entry into this territory – House of Cards, which will debut later this year.

Lilyhammer will premiere on February 6 via Netflix Instant in the U.S., Canada and Latin America. It will debut with the entire season (8 episodes) available all at once.

  • Amazon Signs Multi-Year Agreement With Sony To Expand LoveFilm Catalog

Earlier this year, Amazon acquired LoveFilm, a European Netflix-like company, which beat Netflix to this type of offering in Europe.

Today, Amazon announced a new deal with Sony Pictures Television to expand the content for LoveFilm.

“Our latest major content agreement means we’ll be able to exclusively offer our members world-class content from Sony Pictures,” said LoveFilm CEO Simon Calver. “The number of recent high-profile deals we have secured means we are able to keep expanding the service, offering our members high-quality films and TV and the ability to watch as much as they want for one low monthly price.”

Other recent LoveFilm deals include those with Warner Bros., Entertainment One, StudioCanal, Disney, Momentum and Lionsgate.

The Sony deal is a multi-year agreement that will give members exclusive streaming access to new and forthcoming Sony Pictures titles during the second subscription pay TV window, as well as catalog titles and TV series, from next June.

LoveFilm members will get access to titles like The Social Network, Salt, Transformers, The Karate Kid, Wallace & Gromit, and more.

Forthcoming Sony Pictures releases, catalog titles and TV series will be added to the LoveFilm instant service which is accessible via PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, ipad, and various Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players. DVDs are still being offered as well.

  • Facebook’s Top Status Trends of 2011

Facebook’s Top Status Trends of 2011

Now it’s Facebook’s turn to talk about the trends it has seen over the course of 2011, and considering how many people are on Facebook, and how often they’re on it, this might be the most telling list yet of what has really been on people’s minds this year. Facebook calls it “memology”.

“This year’s top cultural trends — or memes — shed light on the more light hearted things people were discussing and sharing on Facebook,” a Facebook spokesperson tells WebProNews. “For example, ‘planking,’ where you lie face down in usual locations, was one of the top memes on Facebook in 2011; ‘LMS’ or like my status and ‘TBH’ — to be honest were the new HMU. In the celebrity and music world, Megan Fox had the fastest growing Page and ‘We Found Love’ by Rihanna and Calvin Harris was the most listened to song.”

“Memology takes the pulse of this global community by comparing this year’s status updates to last year’s, unearthing the most popular topics and cultural trends – or memes – emerging on Facebook,” says Facebook’s Jonathan Chang. “Whether it’s hmu, lms or tbh, each year brings a new set of three letter acronyms that go viral.”

Here’s what the top global topics looked like in 2011:

A couple of things that really stick out as really surprising from all of this data is that the movie Insidious made the top ten in the U.S. and that Avril Lavigne made the top 3 musicians globally. It’s not even about liking them. thought Insidious was OK, but it was more discussed on Facebook in the U.S. than the death of Steve Jobs? Really? I also find it interesting that our Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers were so high on the global list.

  • Patty Jenkins No Longer Directing Thor 2, Twitter Reacts

Back in September it was announced that Monster director Patty Jenkins would helm Marvel’s Thor 2. Today it was reported that the director is leaving the project over creative differences.

It’s being reported that Marvel Studios are talking with agencies as they begin the process of finding a new director. According to Deadline, “she’ll probably end up working on one of these superhero films, but perhaps not on a sequel.”

Marvel Studios will have to move fast in order to make their November 15, 2013 release.

News of Patty Jenkins’ exit from Thor 2 found many people turning to Twitter to vent their feelings on the news:

  • Xbox Update Delayed

    Update: Hryb tweeted:

We are a go! The #XboxUpdate is currently on its way to all 35 million Xbox LIVE members around the world (1/2) 11 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

This week, Microsoft announced the launch of its new Xbox platform and apps, with the goal of bringing about “the evolution of TV and entertainment”. Here’s a list of the apps and their scheduled release dates.

The company has apparently run into some unexpected issues with the launch, however. There isn’t much in the way of details, but there has been at least a slight delay.

Larry Hryb (aka: MajorNelson) of the Xbox team has been tweeting throughout the day:

FYI: The timing for Xbox 360 dashboard update has been slightly delayed. I’ll have a status update later today 4 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Thanks again for your patience. I won’t have additional details until later today. The moment I have new information, I’ll share it w/ you 4 hours ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

We are still working to get the release out. Stay tuned, we’ll have an update this afternoon (PT) on when it will begin rolling out. 1 hour ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

No new information to report yet. My earlier update is still the most current http://t.co/qq8AUPAs 5 minutes ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto

Bing and Kinect play a big role in the update. You can read a bit more about that here. And here’s some info about ads that are on the way.

The Xbox 360 console experienced record Black Friday sales this year.

  • Get Ready For A Bunch Of Ads On Xbox

Get Ready For A Bunch Of Ads On Xbox

As you may know, Microsoft is launching a big Xbox update, and rolling out a whole bunch of entertainment apps. Along with all of that, of course, comes plenty of advertising.

Microsoft’s Shawn McMichael talks about this on the company’s advertising blog. He says the launch “represents a new era of interactive TV advertising and a couple of firsts for advertising on Xbox Live.”

These would be standard TV ad spots within traditional TV content on Xbox Live, and Kinect-enabled branded destination experiences on Xbox Live.

“This makes Xbox LIVE the largest next generation TV platform to offer advertisers the ability to purchase 30 second TV spots within entertainment content. It also makes Xbox the only place on TV where advertisers can use the power of gesture to engage with audiences!” he says.

“From the moment Kinect launched, a little over a year ago, the industry has been asking us, what does this mean for advertisers?” he continues. “There has been a lot of talk about how Kinect voice and gesture controls have the power to transform TV and, in truth, the creative possibilities are endless. But we needed to develop formats to help advertisers take advantage of those possibilities and today I’m pleased to announce that we’ve delivered on that promise. At launch, we now more than 100 unique campaigns running with Kinect-enhanced BDEs, reaching the highly engaged audience of 35 million active Xbox LIVE subscribers around the globe.”

Content providers (like The Today Show, for example) are also partnering with Microsoft to sell standard 30-second ad spots within their content on Xbox Live.

The launch of all of the new apps will certainly make the Xbox a much more accessible to a wider audience, and that definitely means more ad appeal.

  • Xbox 360 App Release Dates

It’s no surprise, but Microsoft is working hard to make Xbox the go-to device for living room entertainment. The company has a pretty good head start in this department (no question), when compared to a rival like Google or Apple.

The Xbox 360 is enormously popular, already, and consistently performs very well for the company, come earnings report day. Now, they’re set to launch a slew of TV/video entertainment-related apps that should go a long way in solidifying Xbox as the premier way to connect to online video content for many users.

And they’re doing it with Kinect and voice search as a nice bonus.

“A new era in entertainment begins where all your entertainment is together in one place — your games, movies, TV shows, music and sports,” said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “With this update, Xbox 360 system owners will experience Kinect voice control integrated with Bing search, making your TV and entertainment experiences more social and personal than ever.”

The company put out this infographic with its announcement:

  • Netflix for Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet

Netflix for Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet

Netflix announced today that it is now available for all Android tablets. This is something of an accomplishment, considering that fragmentation has historically been an issue with Netflix’s efforts to deliver its service across Android devices. This seems to have become less and less of an issue throughout this year.

In a post on the Official Netflix Blog, Zal Bilimoria says:

Today we’re excited to let you know that we’ve launched a fully redesigned experience for our free app on all Android tablets including the Kindle Fire and NOOK Tablet.

The new design is much more immersive and provides greater focus on the growing number of titles in the Netflix catalog. In fact, the new interface displays twice as many movies and TV shows as before, enabling you to discover even more titles you’ll love. Also, we’ve taken greater advantage of the tablet’s unique features, inviting you to swipe through rows of titles featuring larger artwork.

Netflix also says the new experience will be ready for the iPad in the coming weeks.

This week sees the launch of both the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet. Netflix will no doubt be a draw for consumers who wish to purchase both of these devices going into the Holiday season.

  • Rick Fox on the Powerful Influence of the Web on Entertainment

It’s always exciting when high-profile personalities acknowledge the Internet space and the opportunities that exist on it. When this happens, it only helps to further validate what we, those of us involved in the Internet/tech space, live and breathe every day.

Rick Fox speaking to WebProNews at the BlogWorld Expo about his passion for new media was one of these moments. Fox, who is known for his successful NBA, acting, and producing career, told us that he turned to the Internet because he wanted to tell his story.

He is currently working on a Web series called Off Season, which is a comedy based on a basketball player that is struggling to stay out of trouble. Fox told us he tried Hollywood but found that his standards and its standards didn’t match.

“What I realized rather quickly was that the Internet provided me the same opportunity that television provides or the movies provide… it’s a self-distribution model that is there for all of us if we’re passionate enough and persistent enough to bring our story to life,” said Fox.

Even though it’s not always easy to ‘make it big’ online, the opportunities and potential for success are much greater than they are offline. According to Fox, “we are all received online,” whether it is by one person or one million people.

“The thing about the Web is that viral effect that great content can have where, instantly, you can go from one minute sitting in your living room and ranting about something that just bothers you, and you find that 1 million other people out there in the world are bothered by the same thing,” he said.

Fox went on to say that the world’s perception of what entertainment is, isn’t really what people want to see. This is why John Doe is able to create a remix of a song and get more hits than the original song itself.

He believes that the future of the entertainment industry lies in the individuals that create content based on their point of view. For too long, people in high places have tried to dictate what society wants, but the Internet has changed this. Fox told us that the entertainment opportunities online would increase moving forward and that the people who have embraced the space early will go on to tell us who the next generation of entertainers will be.

“Those people that are brave enough to step out and have that persistence of speaking to 1-10 followers one day and [are] now speaking to 10 million people – these are the people that are going to be galvanizing communities and they are gonna curate content… and they’re gonna tell us what we should be focused on, and they’re gonna become the next generation of entertainers,” said Fox.
