  • Jessica Lange To Return To “AHS” Post As Emmy Winner

Although Jessica Lange is already an Emmy-winning actress–she won in 2009 for the HBO movie “Grey Gardens”–she’ll be returning to “American Horror Story” this season with a statue she claimed from the first season, which saw her play the devilish Constance Langdon.

Perhaps because of the show’s unique plotline–the first season portrayed one family in a house, while the second season will be set in an asylum and will presumably not feature those characters–the show was labeled as a “miniseries” by the Emmys, and Lange took home a statue for Outstanding Supporting Actress in that category. She will return as Constance for the upcoming season, which debuts October 17th on FX.

As the mother of both a ghost and a mentally handicapped young woman, Constance’s past was a recurring theme on the show, linking her to the haunted house which was the centerpiece of the story as well as to former and present occupants. Lange nailed the slightly mad Southern Belle with murderous tendencies and a skewed look on life, easily making her the star of a show which was supposedly about a troubled family. Fans are ecstatic that she’ll be returning for season 2.

  • Tracy Morgan: Twitter Hoax Gives Emmys Viewer Boost

Tracy Morgan was the subject of a huge Twitter hoax last night and wasn’t even aware of it at the time.

Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel decided to take to the social media network to get a little ratings boost for the Emmy Awards; trouble was, his plan involved the “30 Rock” star and a little faux drama. Minutes after he tweeted, Tracy Morgan became a trend on Twitter and thousands of viewers tuned in to watch the awards.

An estimated 25,000 tweets went out in the next few minutes about Morgan, and of course when people figured out that Kimmel was just trying to get people to change the channel, they called him out on it. But he’s one of the few people who could throw out a little fake bit of news like that and still make people laugh rather than cause outrage.

  • No Wonder Game Of Thrones Won The Emmy For Best Visual Effects

I’m not a huge fan of CGI visual effects. I’m more of a Ray Harryhausen stop-motion monster kind of guy. There are some times, however, where CGI visual effects can blow my mind. These special effects oftentimes also win a lot of awards.

HBO fan favorite Game of Thrones recently walked away from the Creative Arts Emmy Awards with six trophies for a number of technical achievements. Among those, the show won the award for Outstanding Visual Effects. Budgets are tight for visual effects on TV shows, but HBO’s increased budgets surely helped Game of Thrones open its coffers a little more to help fully realize the world of Westeros.

Thanks to YouTube user TheCGBro, we can now see how the CG was actually used in Game of Thrones. CG works best when it adds something substantial to the shot. You can plainly see in these shots that the CG melds extremely well into the natural shot. There is no indication that any visual trickery was ever used.

I think it’s obvious why Game of Thrones won the Emmy. Now if only we could get this kind of CGI budget for the next Wolverine movie.

  • Louis C.K. Can Say Screw You To TV, Still Score Emmy Noms

The little comedy experiment that could just keeps on…doing?

We already know that Louis C.K.’s standup special Live at the Beacon Theater was a success monetarily and artistically. Now, it has a chance to be a critical winner.

That’s because Louis C.K. has scored 7 Emmy nominations, four of which are for his standup special that never even appeared on network or cable television.

Live at the Beacon Theatre scored nominations for Outstanding Special Class Programs, Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special, Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special, and Outstanding Picture Editing For Short-Form Segments And Variety Specials.

After deciding to cut out the middleman, Louis C.K. released Live at the Beacon straight to fans via his website back in December of 2011. He set a flat price of $5, and for that fans could grab multiple streams and downloads that were DRM-free.

In one week, proceeds hit the $1 million mark, 75% of which Louis C.K. donated to charity. It was so wildly successful, that other standup comedians like Jim Gaffigan and Aziz Ansari followed suit.

I guess you can give the finger to the man and still get your props. He’ll be testing that premise again this summer, as he’s been selling tickets to his standup tour directly from his site as well, and even threatening those who would resell them at a markup on sites like StubHub.

For his FX show Louie, Louis C.K. also received three (higher profile) nominations; Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

  • Seth MacFarlane’s Rejected Trade Ad

Seth MacFarlane tried to run this ad in the entertainment-trade papers in L.A. a couple of days ago. They rejected it.

Instead he sent out mailers with the above on the front and this image on the inside:

    (image)

This follows the 2010 mailer MacFarlane ran that featured Peter dressed as the girl from Precious and the slogan “Vote For Us Or You’re Racist”. This one sparked some controversy at the time, but that was most likely MacFarlane’s intention.

He followed it us last year with a mailer read, “You have to vote for us. We did a Holocaust episode”

The inside cover read, “Celebrating diversity – written by 8 WASPs, 6 Jews, 2 Asians and 1 Gay.”

Although the ad was released as a mailer, accompanying a DVD screener sent to the voting members of the Emmys, MacFarlane tweeted the pictures a couple of days ago, saying they refused to run them in the trades.

Family Guy is competing in the best comedy series category. It has been nominated four times in a row since MacFarlane changed the category from best animated series in 2009. That year Family Guy became the first animated comedy to win a nomination for best comedy series.

Modern Family received 17 Emmy nominations last year winning best comedy series and best supporting acting awards. Here’s their mailer:

[Above: Cast of Modern Family celebrate thier big win – Courtesy Sofia Vergara, Twitter]

Last night’s Emmys were a mix of surprises and expected results as a few notable actors walked away with their first emmys and a couple of powerhouse shows maintained their place at the top.

The biggest surprise of the night might have been Friday Night Light‘s star Kyle Chandler winning the award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role as Coach Taylor on the critically-acclaimed show. Peter Dinklage also grabbed an Emmy for his work on the HBO hit Game of Thrones.

The two shows that won the night’s big awards, Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series have won the award for several years in a row. Both Mad Men and Modern Family winning the statues was no surprise to anyone. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart also won again for Variety, Musical or Comedy Series – making it 9 years in a row.

It was a huge night for Modern Family, as the show recorded wins for not only Outstanding Comedy Series, but for Supporting Actress (Julie Bowen), Supporting Actor (Ty Burrell), Directing (Michael Spiller) and Writing (Steve Levitan and Jeffrey Richman). Here are some reactions from the winners –

As you may have heard, nude photos of Scarlett Johansson were leaked this past week, and Next Media Animation, which parodies a lot of tech news with its signature Taiwanese animation style, took the story on in its latest video:

  • Emmys 2011: Can Online Buzz Predict The Winners?

The 63rd Annual Primetime Emmys are Sunday, and there is already a ton of chatter across social media channels about the nominated shows and actors. In fact, there has been quite a lot of chatter since the nominations were announced back in July.

Performance marketing agency Performics recognizes this, and has developed a “Primtetime Emmy Online Comedy Index” to look at all the buzz surrounding the nominees. The theory is that social media buzz and the volume of Google searches can accurately predict who will win the awards on Sunday night.

If they are right, it looks like it’s going to be a good night for NBC comedy.

According to the social metrics, The Office should win the award for Outstanding Comedy Series and Alec Baldwin should win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on 30 Rock.

The Office leads both Google searches and total tweets when it comes to the nominees. Coming in a close second in terms of Twitter buzz is Fox mega-hit Glee. After that, the other nomiees drop off quite significantly.

As far as Outstanding Actor goes, Alec Baldwin leads in searches by a significant margin over Louis C.K. and Steve Carell. I’m going to hope that this doesn’t signify the outcome, as it would be a travesty for anyone but Louis C.K. to win (just my opinion).

Here’s an infographic that shows the results of the study –

When it comes to the Outstanding Lead Actress award, Parks & Recreation‘s Amy Poehler and 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey are virtually tied for the top spot, according to Performics.

“The court of public opinion may not decide award winners, yet people continue to embrace social media and search engines in new and creative ways,” said Daina Middleton, CEO of Performics. “Fans, networks and countless others are participating with and expressing interest in their favorite nominees. We’ve put some of Performics’ analytic muscle behind the comedy categories to assess who’s hot, who’s not and who might just get the last laugh.”

Can social chatter really predict the winners? Startup Likester famously used their analyzation of Facebook likes to correctly predict most rounds of American Idol, including Scotty McCreery as the winner. But of course, American Idol picks its winner based on fan votes. The Emmys use that stuffy academy – just ask Sons of Anarchy’s Kurt Sutter how he feels about that deciding body.

Who do you think will win on Sunday night? Is that different from who you think should win? Let us know in the comments.

  • Sons of Anarchy’s Kurt Sutter Goes On Awesome Twitter Rampage Following Emmy Snub

As you all probably know, the Emmy nominations were unveiled yesterday. The Emmys, even more than the Oscars in some regards, are notorious for astonishing snubs that make you question yourself, gravity and even humanity. See: The Wire. But that’s a whole other article.

This year, in the Best Drama category we have the HBO series’ Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. We also have Showtime’s Dexter and AMC’s Mad Men. Rounding out the group is the NBC turned DirecTV hit Friday Night Lights.

Absent from that list is FX’s Sons of Anarchy. And in my opinion it is definitely an injustice that Sons‘ unbelievably great season wasn’t valued higher than the meh season that Mad Men threw our way.

Another snub of Sons of Anarchy, according to many, is the lack of Katey Sagal’s name in the Lead Actress category. Even more than the show getting left out of the Best Drama category, this is truly an injustice. Sagal’s Gemma Teller doesn’t just hold the show together, she’s brilliant.

The show’s creator Kurt Sutter was a little miffed by the Emmy noms yesterday, and took to Twitter to express his feelings. What followed was a hilarious, quite NSFW rant that spanned almost 20 tweets. Seriously, it’s great. Here’s how he started it –

my very classy, ever grateful and humble wife forbade me from using the word CUNT today. so i’ll wait till midnight to address the emmy noms 20 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

He then discusses his feeling about Glee – first hostile, and later laudatory (kind of) –

fuck glee. hate those annoying, “please accept me for who i am”, singing brats. there, i said it. are you happy? 20 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

@PJASchultz i love ryan murphy. he’s always very cool with me. love glee too. just tired of all the jizz piling up at its feet. 16 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Sutter also discussed other snubs, including David Simon’s Treme and Frank Darabont –

me, david simon and frank darabont are meeting at home depot to rent chainsaws and woodchippers. 20 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Sutter then discusses sucking up to the academy, and his opinion of that practice –

the worse part of not getting any emmy nods is all the wasted blowjobs i gave at the academy picnic. my breath still smells like sour amonia 16 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

best part of not getting an emmy nod. now i don’t have to pretend i give a shit about the profiteering douchebag academy. 16 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

because you know if we were nominated i’d be all humble and blowing smoke up their asses. now i can stay true to myself and just be a dick. 16 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

The funniest tweets come from Sutter talking about the age of the academy –

if my mom and dad were alive this emmy snub would kill them. that’s not true, they were too old to understand my show. just like the academy 15 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

these two academy member walk into a bar. one orders a beer. then they both die because they’re so fucking old. 15 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

saw two academy members on the gold course. one asked the other what club to use. then they both died because they were so fucking old. 15 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

At the end of the show, Sutter tweeted this –

you do know that i’m really okay with no noms right? if i was really upset, i wouldn’t be ranting. i’d be plotting. i’m all about the love. 15 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

those who got the joke, laughed. those who didn’t, published a story. so sad that greedy media whores must turn good fun into nasty business 5 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Well, I published a story and I laughed. Honestly and having no filter are two qualities I truly love, and this rant exhibited both.

What do you think about the Emmy noms? Did your favorite shows get snubbed? And what to you think about Kurt Sutter’s Twitter activity? Let us know in the comments.
