  • Emma Stone Rumored To Be In Negotiations To Sing In ‘Whiplash’ Director’s New Musical ‘La La Land’

Emma Stone is rumored to be in negotiations to star in Whiplash director, Damien Chazelle’s musical, La La Land, and quite possibly with Ryan Gosling, sources told TheWrap.

When Emma Watson dropped out to star as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Emma Stone became the focus of Chazelle and Lionsgate’s search for the perfect actress to play Mia in the musical.

Ryan Gosling is reportedly the latest actor in negotiations for the male role, alongside Emma Stone.

La La Land is a two-hander that follows a pair of dreamers — aspiring actress Mia, who’s lonely desperate to fit in, and cocky yet charismatic jazz pianist Sebastian — who fall in love in Los Angeles,” said The Wrap about the plot. “However, the city that brought them together may tear them apart, as they soon discover that balancing love and art in such a cutthroat climate isn’t easy.”

La La Land is said to be a movie about “big dreams, the big city and the kind of love that makes life feel like a musical.”

TheWrap obtained a document written by Chazelle, called the “lookbook” for La La Land, which is a summation of the story, characters, look and tone of the film.

“At its core, this is a movie about artists in love–and what it means to be an artist in love in arguably the most competitive city on the planet. How do you juggle the need to find success as an artist with the need to share oneself with another human being? And how do you do so in a place where every poster, every street corner and every sign remind you of the glories just beyond reach? L.A. is the “Dream Factory,” and to me there’s something swooningly romantic about that: all those unsung songs and unrealized ideas clouding the air. By casting an affectionate eye on a pair of young hopefuls, while aspiring to the kind of full-fledged romanticism you hardly ever see in today’s movies, I hope to capture the spirit of the city I now call home, and make a movie that feels both classical and urgent–and, yes, intrinsically L.A.,” wrote Chazelle, in part.

Emma Stone has been very busy of late, especially after her Oscar nomination for Birdman. Her next project is Cameron Crowe’s Aloha with Bradley Cooper, followed by Woody Allen’s Irrational Man, with Joaquin Phoenix.

It’s no wonder Emma Stone and her boyfriend of three years, Amazing Spiderman co-star Andrew Garfield are reportedly taking a break. There just no time for romance when you’re portraying romantic leads.

  • Emma Watson Is Officially Most Outstanding Woman

Emma Watson holds the honor this year of being named the most outstanding woman on the annual list arranged by AskMen.com.

This list of women, with Emma Watson on the top, is more than just about looks.

According to publisher James Bassil, “This year’s list is not only a reflection of a shift in the media, but also a shift in modern male thinking. We wanted to steer away from ‘hot’ lists and highlight women who have demonstrated a sheer influence in their industry.”

He added, “We were looking for women who are doing something new this year, something that demonstrates their versatility and raw talent.”

Emma Watson is definitely a great choice for this year! Her star has been rising since her days as Hermione on the Harry Potter series and not only for her acting talent.

Emma Watson has grown into an amazing woman who uses her time and effort to fight for the rights of women everywhere.

The website said of Emma Watson, “For those who grew up alongside the actors in the Harry Potter movies, it’s strange to see just how damn accomplished Emma Watson has become. Not content with being smart, rich and talented, she’s spent much of her time working to end gender discrimination.”

It continued, “Hell, at 24 years old, she makes almost everyone seem lazy.”

That is true, I have actually had that feeling about Emma Watson before!

UFC fighter Ronda Rousy comes in at number two behind Emma Watson. Behind her at number three is Kim Kardashian, but before you think this may have slipped into “hot list” territory, the website states that she was recognized for her business sense, not showing the entire world her “business”.

It says, “Those who know Kim from Keeping Up With the Kardashians might be quick to write her off. But if you step back and take a look at the facts, Kim has managed to flip Z-level fame into A-list status through pure business savvy. TV show, check. Perfume line? Check. Coffee-table book? Check. Biggest mobile app of 2014? Check, please. If anyone could break the internet, it’s Kim K. She’s a force to be reckoned with.”

    Ok, point taken.

What do you think about the top three women in this year’s outstanding women list? Would you have picked Emma Watson for the number one spot?

  • Emma Watson Ventures Into Singing For Another Revamped Fairytale

Emma Watson won the world over with her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movie series, and now she’s ready to tackle the next in a line of reimagined fairytales, Beauty and the Beast.

Emma Watson has tons of experience in support roles, like her roles in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bling Ring, Noah and This Is the End.

But, Emma Watson has never played in a featured role. Until now.

Emma Watson has signed on to play Belle in the new Beauty and the Beast remake that is schedule to come out next year.

Of course, she won’t have any trouble acting, but the singing, that might be a different story.

She announced the big news via Facebook, saying, “It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’.”

Emma Watson told Total Film of the new role, “I sing, so that’s really unexpected. I’ve never had to do that for a film before, and I think people will be interested to see me do something very different like that.”

She added, “It gives me a different challenge, really. That’s terrifying in and of itself!”

That would be terrifying, even for the most seasoned actor. However, Emma Watson seems up to the challenge.

“It feels like I was building a portfolio over the last five, six years. Now I feel like I’m ready to really be carrying films. I’m really just ready now to focus on my career full time and go full steam ahead,” Emma Watson said.

She added, “It’s exciting at the moment.”

  • Emma Watson Just a Little Freaked About Singing in ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Emma Watson, who has been cast as Belle in the live-action movie version of Beauty and the Beast, is thrilled about the part. However, there is one aspect of the gig that freaks her out just a bit.

“I sing, so that’s really unexpected,” Emma Watson told Total Film. “I’ve never had to do that for a film before, and I think people will be interested to see me do something very different like that.”

Watson added, “It gives me a different challenge, really. That’s terrifying in and of itself!”

Emma Watson will join Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey fame, who will play the Beast, and Luke Evans, who will play Gaston.

In a January Facebook post announcing the role, Emma Watson said the Disney film “was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to Be Our Guest and sing Something There.”

In preparation for the singing, the actress made it clear that she would be taking singing lessons before production begins.

Although Emma Watson is a household name, she has yet to take the leading role in a major Hollywood production. However, after co-starring roles in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bling Ring, Noah and This Is the End, Watson feels she is up to the task.

“It feels like I was building a portfolio over the last five, six years. Now I feel like I’m ready to really be carrying films. I’m really just ready now to focus on my career full time and go full steam ahead,” said Emma Watson. “It’s exciting at the moment.”

  • Emma Watson And Prince Harry Are Seeing Each Other? Twitter Reacts To Rumor

A few days ago, Australia’s Women’s Daily publication reported that Emma Watson and Prince Harry are secretly dating. Of course, people all over the world freaked out and some people even took to Twitter to share their reactions. “If Emma Watson gets to be both Hermione Granger and a princess, she will have officially lived all of my dreams,” one fan tweeted. And while the thought of Watson becoming a real-life princess is definitely an entertaining one, unfortunately it seems that it’s all just wishful thinking.

Watson herself squashed the rumors on her Twitter. Watson posted, “Remember that little talk we had about not believing everything written in the media?!” She sent out another tweet saying, “also… marrying a Prince not a prerequisite for being a Princess.” The second tweet included a link to a scene from Alfonso Cuaron’s 1995 film A Little Princess.

Emma Watson previously said in an interview with Australia’s Elle magazine that she doesn’t date people who are famous and that she prefers to keep the personal details of her life private. “I don’t date people who are famous, and I don’t think it’s fair that, all of a sudden, intimate details of their personal life are public as a direct result of me. I wish I could protect them,” Watson said.

During the interview with Elle, Watson also talked about her views regarding self-esteem issues. “I can take criticism on the chin a lot more. As a younger woman, that pressure got me down but I’ve made my peace with it. With airbrushing and digital manipulation, fashion can project an unobtainable image that’s dangerously unhealthy.”

She added, “It makes me sad to hear girls constantly putting themselves down. We have these unbelievably high expectations of ourselves, when actually we’re human beings and our bodies have a function.”

  • Emma Watson Says She’s Not Dating Prince Harry

Emma Watson, despite the hopes and dreams of everyone on the planet, is decidedly NOT dating Prince Harry.

Sigh…I know. I had images of Hermione Emma Watson becoming royalty just like everyone else. The story goes, when Prince Harry heard that Emma Watson and her British rugby player boyfriend Matthew Janney broke up at the end of last year, he sent her an email inviting her to a party.

12 friends accompanied Emma Watson to the party for comfort’s sake, but Harry and Emma Watson seemed to really hit it off.

That is what is rumors subsisted on. The observations that Emma Watson and Prince Harry are really enjoying each other’s company and getting to know each other really well were just too delicious to be true.

A friend of Harry’s reportedly told Us, “[It’s] fake. It’s such a random story.”

    Booo, Harry’s friend.

Emma Watson denied the rumors (well, pretty much, anyway) via Twitter. She posted this tweet, suggesting that we shouldn’t believe everything we read.

However, the world is not ready to give up on Emma Watson and Prince Harry. Really, it’s just too awesome.

  • Emma Watson Denies Rumors That She Is Dating Prince Harry In a Sweet Tweet

Emma Watson denied rumors that she is secretly dating Prince Harry by posting a really cute tweet on Sunday.

A report from Australia’s Woman’s Day claimed that Emma Watson and Prince Harry are having “secret dates with each other and are getting to know each other quite well.”

However, Emma Watson denied the rumors in her cute tweet by reminding the world that they shouldn’t believe everything they read.

According to the reports, Prince Harry asked mutual friends to help him convince the Harry Potter actress to hang out with him. He apparently sent the actress an email asking her to go out with him after she split from rugby player Matthew Janney in December.

The source was likely referring to Emma Watson‘s intelligence. She is arguably the whole package, with beauty and brains. After all, she is a Brown University graduate, has studied at Oxford University in England and is very well spoken as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.

    Whoa!

According to a report from Australia’s Woman’s Day, Emma Watson, best-known as Hernione Granger in the Harry Potter films and Prince Harry are having “secret dates with each other and are getting to know each other quite well.”

The magazine is reporting that Prince Harry called on mutual friends to help him hook up with Emma Watson and then sent the actress an email asking her to hang out after she split from rugby player Matthew Janney in December.

  • Emma Watson: Is She Dating Prince Harry?

Emma Watson is best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series of films. Will she now be known as one who is dating royalty–Prince Harry to be exact? There is a rumor floating around that states exactly that, and it’s been confirmed by at least one publication.

Woman’s Day Australia reports that the two are enjoying “secret dates with each other and are getting to know each other quite well.”

It seems Prince Harry reportedly reached out to Emma Watson via email, following her split from rugby player Matthew Janney, back in December.

The magazine continued, saying when Emma Watson first showed up to meet Prince Harry, that she brought along a dozen of her friends, and that everyone enjoyed the prince’s company.

    “He’s smitten–and it’s more than Emma’s looks,” a source told the publication.

Prince Harry will be an uncle yet again before too long, as brother Prince William and wife Kate Middleton are expecting their second child. Do you suppose Emma Watson will get to meet more of the royal family?

Emma Watson recently starred in the film Noah, alongside actor Russell Crowe, and also made quite a name for herself in The Perks of Being A Wallflower, along with Parenthood star Mae Whitman.

It will be interesting to learn what Queen Elizabeth thinks of her grandson dating an actress–if, in fact the relationship gets that far.

Of course Emma Watson isn’t just an actress. She also went to college and earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Brown University–meaning she’s way more than simply a talented actress and a pretty face.

What do you make of the notion that Emma Watson and Prince Harry might actually be dating? You must admit, they make a most intriguing pair.

  • Emma Watson Inspires Men To Take Up Fight For Women

Emma Watson spoke on gender equality again, this time at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday, to promote the UN Women’s HeForShe IMPACT 10X10X10 pilot initiative.

The former Harry Potter star and UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador thanked some big names for their involvement after her first speech back in September.

Emma Watson congratulated Prince Harry, Yoko Ono and Hillary Clinton on the initiative they have all taken since first launching the HeForShe campaign.

Emma Watson elaborated on the progress made and the encouragement she has had to keep pushing forward in the fight for gender equality.

She added, “I’ve been stunned by the amount of men in my life that have contacted me since my speech to tell me to keep going.”

Emma Watson, a self-proclaimed feminist, went on to urge others to continue the fight, as well.

She said, “It is my belief that there is a greater understanding than ever that women need to be equal participants in our homes, in our societies, in our governments and in our work places. And they know that the world is being held back in every way because they are not.”

She added, “Women share this planet 50/50, and they are under represented, their potential astonishingly untapped.”

Emma Watson went on to state her purpose and the purpose every audience member should undertake. She said, “The groundswell of response we have received in support for HeForShe tells us we are tapping into what the world wants: to be a part of change.”

She added, “Now we have to channel that energy into purposeful action.”

  • Emma Watson To Make Move To Musicals

Emma Watson To Make Move To Musicals

Emma Watson will soon be navigating territory hitherto unexplored in her career.

Musicals. Like old school Singing in the Rain musicals.

Emma Watson has been working hard to shed her Hermione Granger skin, and perhaps this is just the thing to do it!

She will not only be singing, but also most likely dancing in the new film.

Emma Watson will play Mia in the film, which will be called La La Land. Mia is trying to become an actress in Los Angeles.

Director Damien Chazelle said of the film, “I’ve been trying to get off the ground since I lived in LA, in the past five or six years.”

He continued, “I wrote the script about four years ago, and I worked with the same guy who did the music on Whiplash. We wrote it four years ago and we were just trying to convince someone to do an original, MGM-style musical, because I don’t think there are enough.”

    Emma Watson(@emmawatson)

Agreed. There just aren’t enough big budget Hollywood musicals out there. Especially modern ones. This sounds like so much fun, not only for Emma Watson, but for us, as well!

The music minds will not be the only connection to Whiplash. Emma Watson’s jazz musician love interest in the film will be played by Whiplash‘s Miles Teller.

It sounds like an incredibly interesting film and it will be great to see just what Emma Watson can do with her pipes and dancing shoes.

It’s a good thing Emma Watson isn’t scared of trying new things in her career.

What do you think of Emma Watson’s new role in La La Land?

  • Emma Watson: Top Feminist of 2014 to Appear Topless in ‘Regression’

Emma Watson was recently named The Ms. Foundation’s Top Feminist Celebrity of 2014 and her choice to appear topless in her upcoming role in Regression may prove controversial.

In preview screenings of the film, the 24-year-old actress appears in a scene with her breasts exposed, a scene audience members deemed “useless and ineffective.”

It is unclear whether the potentially controversial scene will remain in the final cut of the film directed by Alejandro Amenábar, but if so, she will not likely be accused of appearing topless for sexually explicit reasons.

According to Inquisitr, an attendee of one of the preview screenings felt that Watson’s choice was courageous, but may have only been half-hearted.

“You can see her breasts but they are partially obscured,” the preview attendee said. “I think she may have been wearing pasties to cover her nipples.”

Watson, who was also appointed a United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014, was named top Feminist Celebrity of 2014 by the Ms. Foundation For Women.

“We celebrate all feminists every day, but today we’re giving a hat tip to celebrities who are helping to promote women’s equality,” said foundation CEO Teresa Younger, when introducing the Harry Potter actress, who gave an inspiring speech at the event. “Every celebrity on the list has either embraced the term ‘feminist’, spoken out for women’s equal rights or battled against sexist oppression.”

Regression tells the story of “a young woman who accuses her father of sexually abusing her, but the father has no memory of committing the crime,” according to Inquisitr. “A detective (Ethan Hawke) and a psychologist (David Thewlis) then help the man uncover his suppressed memories, which in turn expose a terrifying nationwide conspiracy.”

  • Emma Watson, a UN Goodwill Ambassador, Named Top Feminist Celebrity of the Year

Emma Watson, a UN Goodwill Ambassador, Named Top Feminist Celebrity of the Year

Emma Watson was named the top feminist celebrity of the year by the Ms. Foundation and Cosmopolitan.com. She was chosen by the public in an online survey.

As a UN Goodwill Ambassador, Watson helped found the HeForShe Campaign this year, for which she gave a rousing speech urging men to take up the feminist cause, telling them, “gender equality is your issue, too.”

The recently single Watson, a Brown University graduate with a degree in English Literature, explained her reasons for advocating for the feminist movement during the speech.

“I started questioning gender-based assumptions when at eight I was confused at being called ‘bossy,’ because I wanted to direct the plays… When at 14 I started being sexualized by certain elements of the press. When at 15 my girlfriends started dropping out of their sports teams because they didn’t want to appear ‘muscly.’ When at 18 my male friends were unable to express their feelings.”

Watson went on to say gender equality is not just a fight for women.

“..in the UK suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20-49 years of age; eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease. I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality either. We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence.”

The complete list includes Emma Watson, Laverne Cox, Rachel Maddow, Beyoncé, Cher, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Meryl Streep, Mindy Kaling and Ann Curry.

“We celebrate all feminists every day, but today we’re giving a hat tip to celebrities who are helping to promote women’s equality,” Ms. Foundation President Teresa Younger said in a statement. “Every celebrity on the list has either embraced the term ‘feminist,’ spoken out for women’s equal rights or battled against sexist oppression.”

  • Emma Watson, Matthew Janney Call It Quits

Emma Watson and her boyfriend of about one year, Matthew Janney, have called it quits. The Harry Potter star (Watson is best known for her role in the film series as Hermione Granger) and the Oxford hunk are through.

According to a report from Us Weekly, the split was a mutual one.

Emma Watson and Matthew Janney first went public with their relationship in January. They were spotted enjoying a Caribbean vacation together.

It’s a bit uncertain as to the reason for the break up, but sources say Emma Watson has “moved on and is currently busy with work and her lining up some philanthropic pushes.”

Watson is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, and she helped launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe. The campaign calls for men to advocate for gender equality.

Emma Watson is currently at work filming her upcoming drama, Colonia Dignidad, in both Argentina and Germany. The film, which is based on a true story, tells the tale of a German wife (played by Watson) who is searching for her kidnapped husband. The plot takes place back in 1973 under the dictatorship Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet. The film also stars Daniel Bruhl and Michael Nyqvist.

Matthew Janney plays for the Oxford rugby team, and is said to have led his teammates to a recent victory just days ago.

While it’s sad to see any couple part ways, at least the split between Emma Watson and Matthew Janney is an amicable one. Perhaps the actress–who has grown from a gangly girl into a beautiful young woman–will find yet another of those proverbial fish in the sea.

Who might you suggest for a new beau for Emma Watson? Is there anyone in the Hollywood loop who would pair well with the Perks of Being A Wallflower star?

  • Emma Watson Gives Inspiring HeForShe Speech

Emma Watson may be best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, but she is working on making a new name for herself.

Watson was recently named a U.N. Women’s Goodwill Ambassador and has been working hard on the HeForShe campaign.

Watson claims that she is trying to remove any stereotypes associated with feminism and trying to encourage men to stand up for the rights of women.

She recently spoke about the campaign to an audience of delegates and representatives and explained why she feels so deeply about feminism and is happy to call herself a feminist.

“Why has the word become such an unpopular one?” Watson said of feminism.

“I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.”

Watson has delivered many other moving speeches on the topic in the past and it seems like she is getting a lot of people to listen.

The U.N. recently added their first male U.N. Women’s ambassador, Farhan Akhtar, who will be working on the HeForShe campaign with Watson and other ambassadors. Akhtar is a Bollywood star and his popularity is likely to draw some more attention to the already popular campaign.

Do you think Watson is a good ambassador and do you think Akhtar will make a difference for the campaign?

  • Emma Watson Dedicates Award at LA BAFTAs To Her Dead Hamster

Honored with a prestigious award from the British Academy of Film and Theatre Arts, Emma Watson chose to dedicate it to a pet hamster that died during filming of her first film. Watson’s pet hamster Millie died midway during filming for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Watson told the story in order to explain how much the British film industry meant to her.

Watson was awarded British Artist of the Year at the Britannia Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 30, held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Watson looked chic wearing an off-shoulder white top with long, sheer sleeves and frilly detail, which she paired with slim black trouser with black diamond details. Meanwhile, the Harry Potter star accessorized with a gold torque necklace, black clutch and black leather heels. Watson wore her hair swept up in an elegant updo.

Looking a bit emotional at the podium as she accepted her award, Watson explained how she grew up in an industry that has cared for her since she first appeared in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when she was 11 years old. “The British film industry hasn’t just been a workplace for me. It’s been the place that I grew up. It’s been a surrogate family, really,” Watson said.

“A sweet, but slightly morbid example of this is, when on the first Harry Potter film, my on-set hamster Millie had a heart attack and didn’t quite make it. So the set decorators built a small mahogany hamster-sized coffin. It had a velvet lining and a silver plaque on the front, which had Millie’s name engraved on it… what I am trying to say is that you are all very special to me,” said Watson.

At the end of her acceptance speech, Watson dedicated her award to her departed childhood pet. “Rest in peace, Millie. This one’s for you,” she said.

  • Emma Watson Dedicates Award to Dead Hamster

Emma Watson has always seemed like such a stable young woman. Amidst starring in several films, she managed to earn a degree at Brown University. Best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series of films, she graduated to different roles in films like The Perks of Being A Wallflower and Noah. Perhaps it’s all this consistency and hard work that makes what she did when receiving the British Artist of the Year Awards at the 2014 Britannia Awards just a little bit peculiar.

This all took place last week when Emma Watson stood at the podium, accepting her Britannia Award. And during that acceptance she dedicated said award to her dead hamster–Millie. She went on in her speech, explaining that during filming a Harry Potter film, she had an on-set hamster–namely Millie. And when Millie passed on into the great hamster hereafter, the crew even built a tiny coffin for her little furry friend.

“On the first Harry Potter film, my on-set hamster Millie had a heart attack and didn’t quite make it,” Watson said. “The set decorators built a small mahogany hamster-sized coffin and it had a velvet lining [and] a silver plaque on front which had Millie’s named engraved in it.

“Rest in peace, Millie. This one’s for you,” she said while accepting her award.

Emma Watson was joined at the 2014 Britannia Awards by Hailee Steinfeld and Eddie Redmayne. Watson wore Balenciaga, accessorized by a Jennifer Fisher necklace, and Jennifer Meyer earrings and rings. She carried a bag by Rauwolf.

In addition to graduating from Brown and achieving accolades in the acting world, Emma Watson also serves as a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador. She is clearly intelligent, talented, and well-versed in many worldwide newsworthy situations.

Somewhere along the way Watson developed a passion for hamsters. And last week she honored one of them at a very prestigious awards ceremony.

Will fans soon see Emma Watson driving a Kia Soul and dancing with the hamsters in the popular ads–or is her allegiance solely to Millie instead?

Emma Watson surely surprised the audience at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in Los Angeles on Thursday when she dedicated her Britannia Award to her late hamster Millie.

Watson, who rose to fame as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series of films, won the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year.

A graduate of Brown University and a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, Watson was honored in a video shown at the BAFTA Award ceremony by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and director Alfonso Cuaron.

“That was really overwhelming for me to watch,” said Watson, trying to hold back tears. She added that the British film industry “hasn’t just been a workplace for me — it was where I grew up.”

The 24-year-old actress told the audience the story of her pet hamster Millie’s death during production of the first Harry Potter film and how the production team took care of the young actress.

  • Emma Watson on Feminism and Her Mother

Last month Harry Potter actress Emma Watson made waves when she spoke at the HeForShe global solidarity movement about the importance of feminism. Standing in the U.N. headquarters in New York City, the 24-year-old called on men and boys around the world to join the movement for gender equality.

“I want men to take up this mantle. So their daughters, sisters and mothers can be free from prejudice, but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human too — reclaim those parts of themselves they abandoned and in doing so be a more true and complete version of themselves,” she said.

The video of her speech went viral almost immediately. But despite her composure, Watson said that she was “very nervous.”

“It wasn’t an easy thing for me to do,” she said. “It felt like: ‘Am I going to have lunch with these people, or am I going to be eaten? Am I the lunch?’”

In fact, fame isn’t something that Watson is very comfortable with. But she says that taking up a cause like this is her way of “making sense of the fame, of using it.”

“I have found a way to channel it towards something else, which makes it so much more manageable for me,” she said. “And this is something I really believe in.”

When she took the stage at the U.N., she addressed her goal in front of a large crowd.

“You might be thinking who is this Harry Potter girl?” said Watson. “And what is she doing up on stage at the UN. It’s a good question and trust me I have been asking myself the same thing. I don’t know if I am qualified to be here. All I know is that I care about this problem. And I want to make it better.”

In December, Watson will appear on the cover of ELLE’s feminism-themed issue.

“Feminism is not here to dictate to you,” she says in the interview. “It’s not prescriptive, it’s not dogmatic. All we are here to do is give you a choice. If you want to run for President, you can. If you don’t, that’s wonderful, too.”

In the ELLE interview, Watson also mentions that her upbringing helped influence her current ideas.

“I’m lucky I was raised to believe that my opinion at the dinner table was valuable,” she says. “My mum and I spoke as loudly as my brothers.”

Watson’s September speech at the U.N. ended with a standing ovation.

  • Emma Watson Addresses U.N. on Gender Equality

Emma Watson, the actress best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film franchise, is also a U.N. Woman Goodwill Ambassador. Watson addressed the U.N. on Saturday, delivering an impassioned speech on gender equality as part of the new HeForShe campaign. Watson implored the men of the world to take up this fight for gender equality.

“We want to end gender inequality,” Watson told the assembly. “And to do this, we need everyone involved… We want to try and galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change.”

Watson went on to argue that feminism is about equality, not separation, and without everyone fighting for change, change may not be possible. She also made it perfectly clear that she is not bashing men. She simply wants them on board for the battle.

“The more I have spoken about feminism, the more I have realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating,” Watson said. “If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop. For the record, feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.”

Following her speech, Emma Watson was lauded by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

“She’s been using her magic wand in her movie,” he said. “I hope she will use magic want to stop violence against women. Again, thank you very much for shining your spotlight on this life-saving work.”

Emma Watson is a Brown University graduate. She managed to squeeze in a college life in addition to a loaded acting career. Now she serves as a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador. As with most people in all walks of life–the busier the person, the harder they work. How impressive that Emma Watson is using her valuable time to help launch this desperately needed effort.
