A few days after MTV rolled out a fun set of Emma Stone emojis (Emma-jis), it has been reported that the 25-year old actress is in negotiations to appear as Sally Bowles in Kander and Ebb’s musical Cabaret.
Last year Stone abandoned the idea of making her first Broadway appearance due to scheduling conflicts, but apparently the lure of the Kit Kat Klub is too strong.
Last week a representative told JustJared.com, “I can confirm that Emma Stone is in negotiations to make her Broadway debut as ‘Sally Bowles’ in Cabaret on Broadway at Roundabout Theatre Company.”
If the talks go through, Stone will be replacing Michelle Williams who has extended her run until November 9 with revival original Alan Cummings. However, unless the run is extended, Stone will only be in for a two-month run since the show is scheduled to close on January 4, 2015.
The story, based on a book by Christopher Isherwood, revolves around a young cabaret performer and her relationship with an American writer. Overseeing the action in the show is the Master of Ceremonies, now being played by Cummings. It premiered on Broadway in 1966 starring Joel Grey as the Emcee and then in London in 1968, starring Judy Dench as Sally Bowles.
The film version, directed by choreographer Bob Fosse, came in 1972 and starred Liza Minelli and Joel Grey.
Besides the Cabaret talks, Stone also has her schedule full of a handful of upcoming films.
The Amazing Spider-Man actress will appear with Michael Keaton in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s upcoming film, Birdman, the story of a washed-up superhero actor who plots to make his comeback in a Broadway play. Birdman is scheduled for release on October 17.
Stone also appears alongside Colin Firth in Woody Allen’s new romantic comedy Magic in the Moonlight, which opened last Friday. But, despite the appearance of two strong actors, the reviews labeled this film as “bland and forgettable.”
In 2015, Stone is set appear in another Woody Allen project, as well as one with Almost Famous director Cameron Crowe. So perhaps a short run in Cabaret is exactly what she needs.
