  • John Legend and Chrissy Teigen: Are They Playing God in Selection of Embryo?

John Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen are expecting their first child in April. The singer and supermodel have come under great scrutiny in recent days since she spoke out about having chosen a “baby girl” embryo with which to be implanted, following IVF treatments.

In an interview with People magazine, Teigen said she specifically wanted John Legend to have a little girl to raise, prompting some to wonder if the couple is playing God in their attempts to bring a child into the world.

“I’ve made this decision,” she says. “Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.’”

“I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. That excited me,” she explains. “It excited me to see–just the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond. A boy will come along. We’ll get there too, so it’s not like we really have to pick. But he definitely is very lucky to have a little girl. And this girl is going to be so completely lucky to have John as her papa–it’s crazy!”

Since the interview posted online, both John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have created a bit of a Twitter frenzy, with several media outlets and individuals questioning their decision.

What’s your take? Do you believe Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are essentially playing God in the way they chose the sex of the embryo with which she was implanted? Or is this simply something modern science has made available to women and couples as part of IVF?

  • Giuliana Rancic Loses Her Last Embryo After Surrogate Miscarries, Considers Adopting A Child

Giulina Rancic can’t seem to catch a break. The reality TV star and her husband were dealt another serious blow in their quest to have a bigger family when their surrogate miscarried for the second time.

The fact that this was the couple’s last embryo made it even more painful, something that Rancic acknowledged in an interview with People Magazine. She also said that “We were so optimistic with this last embryo” and thought that “This is definitely going to work. This is our last shot.”

The petite star and her husband, businessman Bill Rancic, have always wanted to add another child to their family. Their son Duke, now 2 years old, was also born via surrogate.

The couple had 3 more embryos remaining and decided to try for another child using the same surrogate. She miscarried after successfully being implanted with 2 embryos last year. Their final attempt with the last remaining embryo ended on New Year’s Eve when the surrogate suffered another miscarriage.

Rancic’s grueling journey to get pregnant has been seen in detail in her TV show. Sadly, the TV host can’t get pregnant herself as she is taking cancer-suppressing medication after a breast cancer diagnosis in 2011 and a double mastectomy.

Despite these setbacks, Rancic is still optimistic and determined. She and her husband are now considering adoption as a way to have another child.

“I think adoption is a beautiful gift you’re giving each other,” Rancic said in an interview. She also admits that she’s more comfortable with the idea of adopting now – “Because I think to myself, ‘I love Duke so much, if I couldn’t take care of him, I hope there would be someone else who would love him.’”

Giulina Rancic is admirably also keeping things in perspective, confiding to Life & Style that “If I don’t ever have another kid, I have to remind myself that I’m very fortunate to have what I have.”

  • Giuliana Rancic: No More Babies, Last Embryo Lost

Giuliana Rancic and hubby Bill were very open about their struggles with fertility, and they were ecstatic when son Duke was born via surrogate back in 2012. Ever since then they’ve hoped to give Duke a baby brother or sister, but now those hopes have been dashed. The couple has lost their last embryo.

In an interview with People magazine, the E! News host explains that their surrogate was impregnated with the couple’s three remaining embryos, but miscarried the last of them on New Year’s Eve of this year.

“It was painful,” Giuliana Rancic said. “We were so optimistic with this last embryo. We thought, ‘This is definitely going to work. This is our last shot.’”

A breast cancer survivor, pregnancy would be a risk for Rancic. She plans to dust herself off, however, and make plans to grow their family in a much different way.

“We’re open to everything,” she says. “I think adoption is a beautiful gift you’re giving each other. And it’s funny, I’m even more open to [adoption] than I was before. Because I think to myself, ‘I love Duke so much, if I couldn’t take care of him, I hope there would be someone else who would love him.’”

Giuliana Rancic has a new memoir about to hit bookshelves. She is presently doing publicity for Going Off Script–due out on April 7th.

Giuliana Rancic most recently made news for the inconsiderate remark she made at the Oscars about Zendaya’s dreadlocks. She also caused quite a stir at Fashion Police in its wake.

It’s hard to imagine the grief Giuliana Rancic and her husband must have faced when they learned their surrogate miscarried back on New Year’s Eve. Fortunately they’ve been blessed with a son, and will likely bless another child by bringing him or her into their family.
