  • Dunkin’ Donuts Employee Makes Headlines After Refusing To Serve West Hartford Police Officer, Franchise Issues Apology

Instead of reacting negatively after a Dunkin’ Donuts employee jokingly refused to serve one of their own, the West Hartford local police offered positive comments to the store through social media.

Last Saturday, at the Dunkin’ Donuts at 1234 Farmington Ave., a police officer was waiting in line when an employee loudly said in front of a long queue of customers, “He didn’t get the message, we don’t serve cops here.”

The police officer left the store after the remark, but was followed by the franchise manager and the employee with the intention of apologizing. The officer was also offered a free cup of coffee, which he refused. Instead, the officer told the employee to apologize to the customers who were offended by his comment. The store manager reached out to the Dunkin’ Donuts regional and corporate offices, and apologized on behalf of his employee. The manager is set to meet with the local police this Monday. Dunkin’ Donuts received a lot of negative comments from the community after what happened, but the West Hartford local police did otherwise.

“Despite the actions of 1, we know our friends @DunkinDonuts support us,” the state police account tweeted after the said incident.

Chief Tracey Gove also said, “I’m proud of the way our officer handled the situation and grateful to Dunkin’ Donuts for their prompt response. Police officers face insults on a regular basis and we all strive to face them with professionalism.”

Meanwhile, there were no reported actions yet against the employee, but Michelle King, Dunkin’ Donuts’ senior director of global public relations, issued a statement on Sunday.

“The crew member exhibited poor judgment and apologized immediately to the police officer. The franchise owner, a long-time supporter of local police, has also reached out to apologize on behalf of the restaurant. Dunkin’ Donuts and our franchisees share a commitment to the well-being and fair treatment of all guests.”

  • Google Wallet Expanding As Checkout Option

Google Wallet Expanding As Checkout Option

Google Wallet is growing as a payment option as it has now been adopted by both Dunkin’ Donuts and Seamless, which have integrated it into their checkout experiences for Android users.

“People are ordering food and drinks through their smartphones more and more, everyday,” says Hana Chang, Head of Commerce Platforms at Google. “But having to type all your credit card information through that tiny keyboard can be a hassle. So we’ve joined forces with many of your favorite food and beverage brands to add Google Wallet at checkout, allowing you to place orders in as few as two clicks.”

“Dunkin’ Donuts now brings its guests a faster way to purchase and recharge their mobile Dunkin’ Donuts Cards in the Dunkin’ Donuts Mobile App on Android,” says Chang. “By simply selecting Google Wallet at checkout, Dunkin’ Donuts guests can recharge their cards with a couple of clicks—no need to type in credit card information anymore. And hungry Seamless customers will start to see the Google Wallet payment option available in their Android app, helping them get their grub – a delicious array of 80+ cuisine types – in a snap.”

“Google Wallet offers our guests with Android devices another quick and convenient way to load or reload a Dunkin’ Donuts Card within the Dunkin’ Mobile App, to purchase favorite Dunkin’ Donuts food and beverages quickly and get back into their busy day,” said Scott Hudler, Vice President, Global Consumer Engagement at Dunkin’ Brands. “Developing and delivering technologies to enhance guests’ experience, including the Dunkin’ Mobile App, DD Perks rewards program, and eventually mobile ordering, will continue to differentiate our brand as we continue our growth throughout the country.”

Others using Google Wallet include Papa John’s, Domino’s, Eat24, Panda Express, and Jason’s Deli. Papa John’s implemented it back in November.

“In today’s digital economy, consumers are increasingly turning to their smart phones for online purchases, highlighting the importance of convenience and payment security,” said CMO Bob Kraut. “Google Wallet was Papa John’s first venture into mobile payments, and now with more than 50 percent of our sales taking place on mobile or computer, the partnership provides our customers a better and more secure ordering experience.”

Google has been partnering with platforms like Shopify, ChowNow, and Shopgate to get Google Wallet in use at more stores restaurants. ChowNow announced its partnership with Google earlier this week. It brings Google Wallet to thousands of independent restaurants in the U.S.

“We continue to uphold our mission of helping independent restaurants compete with larger chains by providing them with technology that would be both difficult and cost-prohibitive for them to build themselves,” said ChowNow CEO Chris Webb.

“The addition of Google Wallet benefits both restaurants and their customers,” the company added. “Rather than manually inputting their credit card number and billing address, customers with an Android phone can simply tap the “Buy with Google” button. As a result of the added convenience and reduced ordering times, restaurants should see increased order volumes, and hence a more profitable to-go business. With 70 million Android phones currently in use the addition of Google Wallet has broad appeal.”

Google has a list of mobile apps and sites that accept Google Wallet as a payment option here. And don’t forget they offer the Google Wallet card, that lets you use your balance pretty much anywhere.

  • McDonald’s Free Coffee: Get Yours Now

McDonald’s Free Coffee: Get Yours Now

McDonald’s free coffee is the fast food chain’s current–and very popular–campaign to draw in morning people for a meal on the go. The offer started Tuesday, September 16th, and continues through the 29th. Patrons need only to visit their local McDonald’s between the hours of 7:00 AM and 10:30 AM (or whatever their local store’s hours are–these are typical hours) and ask for a small cup of coffee.

The reason behind this marketing effort is to win the fast food breakfast war–something launched by Taco Bell in a new campaign earlier this year. Their franchise even enlisted the help of people from around the country named Ronald McDonald to gain some extra–and likely much-needed–attention.

The McDonald’s Free Coffee campaign issued a press release about the latest giveaway.

“This event builds on McDonald’s first-ever Free Coffee Event launched in March, when the company gave away millions of cups of free coffee during the two-week period,” the statement reads.

The goal, of course, is to lure people in for that McDonald’s free coffee, and hope that while they’re there they’ll also indulge in a pancake breakfast, Egg McMuffin, or a few hash browns.

Time magazine reports that the promotion comes on the heels of a terrible August for the franchise–with sales down a whopping 3.7 percent. History has proven that these giveaways enhance sales, so the big guys at McDonald’s have high hopes for the McDonald’s free coffee campaign.

The L.A. Times says McDonald’s is in it to win the breakfast war, adding that not only has Taco Bell rolled out its own breakfast options, but Burger King announced last month it was buying coffee-and-doughnut chain Tim Hortons in a clear play for the breakfast market. In California, McDonald’s faces competition from Dunkin’ Donuts, which has begun to push its way rather aggressively into the state.

Have you picked up your cup of McDonald’s free coffee yet? Make sure you do so–every morning between now and September 29th.

  • Dunkin’ Donuts To Sell Peeps Donuts For Easter

Dunkin’ Donuts is getting into the holiday spirit this year and plans on selling Peeps around Easter for a limited time.

The new masterpiece was released in Dunkin’ Donuts stores yesterday, just in time for the spring season. The donuts are flower shaped, covered in pink or green pastel icing, and then topped off with a small Peep.

“As America’s donut leader, we are always seeking new and innovative donut varieties to help our guests celebrate special moments and occasions,” said Dunkin’ Donuts’ executive chef and vice president of production Innovation Stan Frankenthaler.

“PEEPS are synonymous with fun and happiness, and we are excited to combine two American favorites to create unique flower-shaped donuts adorned with a marshmallow chick that will sweeten any spring or Easter celebration,” he continued.

Peeps have always been a favorite sweet amongst children and adults alike, and combining them with another sweet, donuts, just seemed to be the most logical idea. How can you possibly go wrong with combining two seasonal favorites?

“We are excited to partner with Dunkin’ Donuts to introduce PEEPS Donuts and provide millions of people a delicious new way to express their PEEPSONALITY this season,” said Brian Bachrach, the senior marketing manager of innovation at Just Born Quality Confections, the creator of the marshmallow treat. “PEEPS and Dunkin’ Donuts have both built passionate and active communities of fans and have been creating smiles for more than 60 years, and we look forward to continuing that tradition with this unique and fun donut.”

Dunkin’ Donuts has been the leader in the donut industry for over 60 years, and is constantly coming up with new innovative ideas to keep them in the lead. They offer over 70 different varieties of donuts, and sell more than 2.5 million each year.

  • Razor Blade Croissant, A Not-So Delicious Discovery

Imagine you’re enjoying a tasty Dunkin Donuts croissant when suddenly you notice it tastes funny. That “funny taste” is a combination of pain and blood. The croissant you just bit into? It turns out to be filled jagged bits of metal. That’s what Priscilla Salas is claiming happened to her this past week. Salas says she bought a croissant from a Dunkin Donut in Windham, Connecticut. When she took a bite out of the pastry, pieces of metal cut her mouth. Salas was “floored” by the discovery.

She immediately notified police about what happened. Contact with the corporate office led to the theory that that she happened to purchase a croissant into which a box cutter blade had fallen when at a distribution center. The exact center where it occurred is still being determined.

Absent-minded food preparation is as much a reality as absent-minded eating. Except one party is at greater risk for biting into a nasty surprise. Rather than wait for disaster to strike in any form, take a minute to actually look at what you are eating. A valuable lesson Salas learned the hard way and wishes to pass on to others. “I just want the public to know and be aware of what they buy and look over everything they eat.” Even if it’s an isolated incident as Dunkin Donuts has stated, it never hurts to check. There’s no telling how much damage could have been done to her body had she’d swallowed one of the pieces. But it’s very likely she will at least do a double take before eating purchased food from now on.

As for Dunkin Donuts, Salas states the company has offered a sincere apology over what happened and given her a free a gift card for her trouble. Odds are, she’ll be opting for coffee.

  • Fake Cop Waves Real Gun in a Dunkin Donuts for 10% Off

Fox13-Tampa Bay, along with the Orlando Sentinel, report that a Pasco County man has been arrested for waving a fake badge and a real gun at a Dunkin’ Donuts in order to get discounts.

Surveillance footage clearly shows Charles Barry and his minivan pulling up to the drive-thru window. As the Barry transacts with the cashier, he waves a Sheriff’s badge and is allegedly demanding a 10 percent discount based on the claim that he’s a U.S. Air Marshal.

What the footage doesn’t clearly show: he has a concealed revolver, and he displays it to the cashier, saying “See? I’m a cop!”

Captain James Mallo of Pasco County said “He mentioned to an employee that he was a U.S. Marshal at one point. He also mentioned that he was an Air Marshal, which also raised a flag to the employees. Sheriff Chris Nocco felt something needed to be done before Barry’s cop fantasy became a little too real. “He brandished a gun. What’s the following step after that? Where is he going to take his fantasy?” he wondered.

Barry is no law enforcer; he works at a print shop, but plays “police” for fun. Police have indicated Barry got the badge from his father, a former New Jersey police officer, and repeatedly solicited the Dunkin Donuts discount.

The manager of the Dunkin Donuts said Barry came through every day, often with his family to get his discount donut fix. Fellow customers of the establishment, like Steve Hepworth, expressed their disgust: It’s just not right. It’s like claiming you’re in the military when you’re not in the military… To me, that’s just as cheap as you can get.”

Captain Mallo said they arrested Barry this past Tuesday when he returned for his regular donut fix. “He was very sorry he did what he did. I believe he was even crying on scene,” Mallo added.

  • Dunkin’ Donuts Blackface Campaign in Thailand

Dunkin’ Donuts has issued an apology for being “insensitive” during their recent advertising campaign in Thailand.

The advertisement shows a woman with her face painted black and bright pink lipstick holding a half eaten “charcoal doughnut”. The slogan reads “Break every rule of deliciousness.”

The Thailand CEO, Nadim Salhani, originally defended the campaign saying the outrage was just “paranoid American thinking”. “It’s absolutely ridiculous,” he continued. “We’re not allowed to use black to promote our doughnuts? I don’t get it. What’s the big fuss? What if the product was white and I painted someone white, would that be racist?” Hours later Dunkin’ Donuts headquarters issued an apology for the “insensitivity” of the campaign.

“It’s both bizarre and racist that Dunkin’ Donuts thinks that it must color a woman’s skin black and accentuate her lips with bright pink lipstick to sell a chocolate doughnut,” said Phil Robertson, who is the deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch. “Dunkin’ Donuts should immediately withdraw this ad, publicly apologize to those it’s offended and ensure this never happens again.”

The Thailand franchise of Dunkin’ Donuts is operated independently of the American franchise, and Salhani says that doughnut sales have increased aproximately 50 percent since the start of the campaign two weeks ago. “Not everybody in the world is paranoid about racism,” said Salhani. “I’m sorry, but this is a marketing campaign, and it’s working very well for us.” Saljani says that he used his own daughter as the model for the campaign.

  • Dunkin’ Donuts Rant Causes Racial Stir

[Warning:] NSFW language contained in this post

Earlier this week, a woman named Taylor Chapman (pictured) recorded her trip to a Dunkin’ Donuts store. She was on a quest to procure free sweets, as she claims she was not given a receipt by the restaurant the day before. The video was uploaded to YouTube, and would have simply joined the myriad of disgruntled customer videos found online but for one thing – the woman hurled racial slurs at Dunkin’ Donuts workers.

The video has now gone viral, just as Chapman said she hoped it would in the video. However, Chapman hadn’t counted on being the subject of the internet’s scorn and disdain.

“This shit’s about to go live, bitch,” said Chapman to one of the workers. “Right on Facebook, ’cause I already posted what your dumb ass did last night. So I hope you’re happy, with your little fucking sand-nigger self, ’cause I’m about to nuke your whole planet from Mars. You think ya’ll are tough, big bad arabs bombing the trade center? I’ll show you tough.”

According to Chapman’s Twitter account, she lives in Ocala, Florida, though in the video she states that she is originally from Indiana.

Instead of getting an employee fired as the woman had hoped, the workers seen in the video are now being honored by Dunkin’ Donuts. The company posted to its Twitter account this week that it is “proud” of how its employees handled the situation, and plans to recognize them in some way. As seen in the video, the employees quietly dealt with Chapman’s ranting, politely offering her free food and not reacting to her racist rant.

  • Dunkin’ Donuts Moves Into Southern California

Dunkin’ Donuts this week announced it will be expanding its stores into Southern California. The restaurant’s goal is to have more than 15,000 Dunkin’ Donuts locations throughout the U.S.

Multi-unit franchisees are now being recruited throughout the Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura, and Orange counties. New Dunkin’ Donuts locations are expected to open in the area starting in 2015. The company is also looking to sell donuts and coffee in universities, casinos, military bases, supermarkets, airports, and travel centers.

“This past year was an exciting one for Dunkin’ Donuts’ growth in the United States, and we are delighted to begin 2013 with the long-awaited announcement that Dunkin’ Donuts will be opening restaurants in California, where there is already incredible passion for our brand,” said Nigel Travis, CEO of Dunkin’ Brands and president of Dunkin’ Donuts U.S. “Expansion to California has always been part of our plan to grow Dunkin’ Donuts’ presence in the U.S. We have maintained our disciplined approach to expand steadily while focusing on initiatives to improve restaurant economics and franchisee profitability. These initiatives include our recent agreement with our franchisee-owned and operated distribution and procurement facility, which ensures the same cost of goods to franchisees in both established and new markets by 2015.”

Dunkin’ Donuts also announced that it opened 291 new locations in the U.S. during 2012. It has plans to open 330 to 360 new locations in the U.S. in 2013, and not just in Southern California.

“In addition to California, we believe we have incredible domestic growth opportunities for Dunkin’ Donuts, both east and west of the Mississippi. On a global basis, we remain committed to our long-term development goal, which calls for us to accelerate to approximately a 5 percent net new annual development rate for Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins combined,” said Travis.

  • Dunkin’ Donuts App Brings Mobile Payments To Popular Chain

Dunkin’ Donuts has a new app that will let customers pay with their iPhone or Android phones.

There’s a lot going on in the mobile payments space. This week, a group of major retailers announced a joint venture that will see the Merchant Customer Exchange payment option in appearing in a multitude of stores. Mobile payments darling Square announced a new monthly plan for small businesses, which is sure to get a lot more stores accepting credit cards with Square (which has its own mobile payments app).

Square, in fact, announced a major partnership with Starbucks last week (which already accepted mobile phone-based payments with PayPal), making Square a payment option throughout the U.S. Dunkin’ Donuts, obviously a major competitor to Starbucks wants people to know they can be all futuristic and pay with their phones at their stores too, even without Square. Customers can use their iPhones/Android phones to store their Dunkin’ Donuts cards for quick, easy payment.

“Use the app to pay for all your purchases,” the company says. “Simply tap the DD Card you wish to use and present the barcode to the employee to be scanned, and you’re good to go. You can also manage and reload your DD Card right from the app.”

The app will also let you locate stores, browse the menu, and send virtual gift cards via text message, email or Facebook. You can also follow the Dunkin’ Donuts Facebook and Twitter feeds from the app.

Dunkin’ Donuts warns that payment with the app only works at participating stores. It’s unlcear just how many of them would not fall into that category.

The app is available in Apple’s App Store, Google Play, and by texting APP to DUNKIN (386546).

  • National Donut Day Means Free Donuts Today

Every year The Salvation Army declares June 1 National Donut Day in honor of the Salvation Army “donut girls” who served donuts to soldiers in Europe during World War I. The organization has a short, wholesome video on the subject that you can view below. It’s sure to make you feel warm and fuzzy about the U.S., but that’s just The Salvation Army’s interpretation of the day. What National Donut Day really means to most of us is free donuts.

Both Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme are giving away donuts at their in-store locations in celebration of the holiday. To receive a free donut from Dunkin’ Donuts, customers must purchase a beverage at the store, but Krispy Kreme claims that any customer can receive any one donut of his or her choice for free – no purchase necessary.

Krispy Kreme has had its “Krispy Kreme Cruiser” parked on Wall Street today, and the company’s CEO and CFO rang the closing bell for the New York Stock Exchange. Dunkin’ Donuts has been running a Twitter contest, giving their followers a chance to win $50 Dunkin’ Donuts gift certificates for answering an hourly donut quiz question.

Take a look below the video to see some of the sugar-high-influenced tweets caused by National Donut Day. And don’t forget to pick up your free donut on the way home from work.

  • Dunkin’ Donuts Twitter Contest Promotes Bad Dates This Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and at this point in our hyper-consumer age it’s no longer novel or ideal to decry how this is a prefab holiday devised by Hallmark and chocolate confectioners in order to sponge up money from all-to-eager sweethearts ready to fork it over in the name of love. Instead, this year, stop worrying and learn to love the Valentine’s bomb.

Dunkin’ Donuts certainly wants you to do that, and that’s why they’re promoting a new contest on Twitter that promises to shower coffee and sweet baked goods all over three lucky winners. Because nothing says “I love you” like a romantic trip to your local Dunkin’ Donuts, winners will receive $25 gift cards for themselves and their Valentine – that’s $50 in Dunkinbucks! – with which they can lovingly encourage their dates to supersize those crullers and custard-filleds. All anybody needs to do in order to enter is tweet @dunkindonuts about who they want to share a heart-shaped donut with and then use the hashtag #CupiDD.

Who knows, maybe this is an awesome date in the minds of some people. I love coffee and simplicity and lord knows I have an insatiable sweet tooth, so this would probably work for me. Then again, any contest that features a double-D cupid will probably have interesting results however you approach it (yes, Dunkin’ Donuts, I saw what you did there).

  • Dunkin Donuts Launches Twitter Contest for National Donut Day

Although you may have known that today is National Donut Day, you may not know that the national holiday honoring our sugared, doughy morning pals has a history.

Instead of being what you may think – a “holiday” started by businesses in order to promote a product – National Donut Day has been around since 1938. It actually began as program started by the Salvation Army. During World War I, Salvation Army volunteers gave out donuts to soldiers on the front lines. Slightly patriotic, mostly indulgent, National Donut Day is always celebrated the first Friday in June.

Donut chains around the country are celebrating this glorious day with promotions. Dunking Donuts is offering a free donut with any beverage purchase. Krispy Kreme is giving out one free donut with no purchase necessary today.

Dunkin Donuts is on the leading edge of social media-connected food chains. The company’s Twitter account has around 80,000 followers and is very well connected with them. Just in the last day, the account has publicly replied to around 20 different followers. The company frequently holds contests and promotions via Twitter, so many that is has an entire page on its site devoted to “rules for contest on social networks.”

In April, Dunkin Donuts retooled its website to be more focused on social media, integrating live Twitter feed as well as Facebook and YouTube directly into the home page. The new site also features a mobile friendly layout for use on the go.

I’ve yet to try their apple pie offering, as I usually just stick to coffee – and damn fine coffee it is.
So to those of you that have tried it, what do you think? Do they use macintosh apples? Granny Smith? Gala? Red Delicious? If you think you know, tweet at them, because you may just win something for free.
