  • Rachel Weisz Will Play Real-life Mercenary Maureen Dabbaugh In New Pete Travis Thriller ‘Snatchback’

Rachel Weisz is set to star as a mercenary hellbent on saving children in a new thriller by Pete Travis, Snatchback.

Playing a woman trying to help families find kidnapped children, Rachel Weisz will star in and produce the film with Frida Torresblanco (Pan’s Labyrinth) as co-producer and Pete Travis (Dredd) as writer and director.

Rachel Weisz will portray Maureen Dabbagh, a real-life woman whose ex-husband abducted their toddler daughter and took her to the Middle East in 1992.

The movie version will see Rachel Weisz’ character, Maureen Dabbaugh, become a mercenary who helps other families recover kidnapped children.

“As told by Pete Travis in his riveting script, Mo’s story is powerful and exciting, but at its heart are deep maternal emotions that anyone in the world can relate to,” said Protagonist Pictures CEO Mike Goodridge in a statement. “It’s a powerhouse role and only an actress as gifted as Rachel could play it.”

Currently, Maureen Dabbagh, who will be portrayed by Rachel Weisz, is a Certified Virginia Supreme Court Juvenile and Domestic Relations Mediator and has worked in more than 1,200 international child abduction cases over the past twenty years, according to mediate.com. Recognized as an expert by courts across the United States resulting in case law, she has provided testimony on this issue before both the state and federal Congress as well as the United Nations, Human Rights Commission.

Rachel Weisz’ new project looks to be a story to which many can relate.

  • Trailer For The Judge Dredd Remake Hits

Trailer For The Judge Dredd Remake Hits

While it’s going to miss the summer blockbuster movie window, the “looks much better than I expected” trailer for the upcoming Judge Dredd movie–called, ironically enough, Dredd–should be enough to generate a decent level of buzz, especially from the comic book geek crowd and those fans of Karl Urban. Aside from the fact that the trailer does look much better than one probably had a right to expect, especially following Sylvester Stallone’s attempt at putting Dredd on the big screen, the production staff did a great job ensuring Urban’s version of the Dredd character looks a lot like the comic character.

    Case in point:

The film’s description, as provided by /Film, also sounds promising:

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Adding to the buzz-building trailer is the fact that Lena Headey’s Ma-Ma looks like an awesome villainess, something we don’t get a great deal in modern movies. Far too often the role of antagonist is normally left to a male character. Here’s hoping Headey absolutely nails the role, that way, maybe we can see more femme fatales in blockbuster-style movies.

When you add the movie’s R-rating into the mix, and you have the makings of something mature geeks and other adult movie-goers should enjoy, because not everything released to the big screen has to be child-appropriate.

  • ‘Dredd’ Gets Teaser Poster and Stills

‘Dredd’ Gets Teaser Poster and Stills

A new teaser poster and the first publicity stills for the upcoming film Dredd have just emerged today. The film is set to be released in September, so it’s shocking that this is all we have right now, but here it is. Movies with comic book heroes typically start there publicity rounds long before the movie is scheduled to open. While it is at the end of the summer, it’s still surprising there isn’t more.

Dredd is based on the comic Judge Dredd, and takes place in a ultra-violent futuristic city where vigilante justice is required to keep the peace. It this version, Judge Dredd is charged with taking out a gang that deals in a new hard core drug hitting the streets called SLO-MO.

Right now, the best thing this movie has going for it is Karl Urban (Bones in the latest Star Trek movie). According to Jo-Blo he is dedicated to this role and really wants to put some quality work out there on this one. The directors, producers and actors are all committed to staying faithful to the comic book.

Which is exactly what Judge Dread creator John Wagner wanted to hear. He got an opportunity to screen the film (or I should say, the producers got the opportunity to show him the film), and he seems impressed. He talks about what he saw to JoBlo:

“I went up to London yesterday to see the completed Dredd film. I’ve had reservations about certain aspects of it, and made them plain to the team at DNA. All but one of them – a little quibble at the beginning – have been addressed. And what a lot they’ve added. Music is on the button. SFX are excellent. Filming is impressive. I’ve not seen a modern 3-D movie before but I like it. I found myself reaching out trying to touch things that were dancing before my eyes.

Karl is a great Dredd and Olivia gets Anderson completely. This is Dredd as it should be done – true to character, visceral, unrelentingly violent (but not off-puttingly so). It will open, I believe, sometime in September. No doubt you’ll let me know what you think when you’ve seen it, but this has my recommendation.”

I guess we are going to have to wait and see if he is just plugging the movie to increase his royalty check, or if it really is true to form. A teaser trailer should be out momentarily, so be on the look-out for that.

All-in-all it should be a gore-fest with the “R” rating. And look at it this way — It can’t be any worse than the Sylvester Stallone version.
