Dragon Age Inquisition Sure Looks Pretty

Dragon Age Origins, despite its solid characters and writing, was a little on the generic side. Dragon Age II was even more so. With Dragon Age Inquisition, it looks like BioWare is beginning to learn a thing or two about world building.

In a new trailer for Dragon Age Inquisition, BioWare shows off some of the environments players will come across in the new RPG. In short – it looks amazing. The design is straight out of the very best European RPGs with a wide variety of environments ranging from forests and castle towns to sprawling underground chasms and deserts.

The move to Frostbyte 3 really shows as well with the environments being some of the prettiest we’ve yet seen in a game. Dragon Age Inquisition may be the first RPG to really show off the power of the PS4 and Xbox One. Of course, it will also be quite the looker on PC.

Dragon Age Inquisition is scheduled to launch later this year on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

  • Dragon Age: Inquisition Might Just Make Up For Dragon Age II

Dragon Age: Inquisition has left many cautiously optimistic after BioWare said that it would be learning from the mistakes it made with Dragon Age II. The latest trailer for the title confirms that dedication to making the best Dragon Age game yet.

At Gamescom, EA showed off a new trailer for Dragon Age: Inquisition that looked almost too good to be true. What was being shown of the game was incredibly pretty, and it sounds like BioWare is aiming for the stars with this one. From the looks of it, the team is crafting an open world that would given even Bethesda a run for its money.

The only real downside of the trailer is that BioWare didn’t focus much on the story. It’s understandable considering the studio’s desire to keep it a surprise, but what it did talk about was a little disappointing. For instance, BioWare’s example of a moral dilemma featured the player having to choose between saving a burning village or letting it burn down. This black or white approach to morality is one of the main reasons why more morally ambiguous titles like The Witcher are starting to encroach on BioWare’s once unassailable reputation as master storytellers. Still, that was one example and I’m willing to give BioWare the benefit of the doubt for now.

You may also find yourself wanting to learn more about the game’s combat, but the above trailer doesn’t really address that. Thankfully, Game Informer released a trailer yesterday detailing what the team is doing in regards to combat. Fans of both Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II should be pleased.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be out in Fall 2014 for all current and next-gen consoles (except the Wii U).

  • ‘Heroes of Dragon Age,’ a Free-to-Play Mobile Game, Announced

Fans of Dragon Age: Origins are patiently waiting for BioWare to finish the upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition. The game’s developers seem to have taken the significant criticism of Dragon Age II to heart, and previews of Inquisition have made it one of the most anticipated next-generation titles yet announced.

Today, EA announced that Dragon Age fans won’t have to wait until Inquisition‘s release next year to get more from the series. Unfortunately, the next Dragon Age game will be free-to-play and on mobile devices.

Heroes of Dragon Age will be coming to Android and iOS sometime this fall. The game is described as a “squad-based combat” game with “engaging quests” in the Dragon Age setting. Players will collect (and/or buy, most likely) a team of heroes and monsters to battle in “fast-paced, character-based” combat. The party members will level up and the makeup of a particular squad will influence battle strategy to some extent. Though a list of heroes has not been announced, EA hinted that at least some of them may be recognizable from already existing Dragon Age games.

Winning in combat imparts rewards that players can use to power-up, and leaderboards will rank players. As a free-to-play game, the option to purchase in-game items with real money will also be present.

  • BioWare Talks Combat In Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Origins is fondly remembered as a throwback to the RPG glory days of yore where combat was action-based, but tactical. Dragon Age II is not so fondly remembered as a game that did away with any form of tactical planning, and instead charged the player with hitting the attack button over and over again until everything was dead. With Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare has a chance to make things right, but will they?

In the below dev video from GameInformer, the team at BioWare talks about how they’re approaching combat in Dragon Age: Inquisition. The team says that they focused on what players did and didn’t like about the combat in the previous two games, and are now wanting to focus on what they liked in the latest title. What this means is that Dragon Age: Inquisition’s combat will have the more action-focused combat of Dragon Age II while retaining the tactical elements of Dragon Age: Origins.

It sounds great on paper, but it doesn’t look quite like that in the off-screen gameplay show in the dev video. It looks like an action RPG where players can take direct control of their entire party. It’s a welcome addition, but it doesn’t look like the pseudo-turn-based combat of the first game. Those looking for more Dragon Age: Origins may have to look elsewhere.

That being said, all of the gameplay shown above is incredibly early. BioWare may have more tricks up its sleeve and we may see a combat system that’s even better than what was seen in Dragon Age: Origins. Until we find out more, fans are better off remaining cautiously optimistic.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will launch in 2014 for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.

  • Dragon Age: Inquisition Trailer Features A Familiar Face

Dragon Age: Origins had a great cast of characters, but the best was easily Morrigan. She was sorely missing in Dragon Age II, but it looks like she’ll back for the third game.

In a trailer released today, EA gaves us our first look at Dragon Age: Inquisition. The new title, powered by DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine, looks far grittier and darker than even the already gritty Dragon Age: Origins. Morrigan narrates the events unfolding before us and says that the central character (i.e. you) will decide the fate of the realm.

BioWare notes that all the footage in the trailer is running on the in-game engine. Needless to say, it looks fantastic. The large, sweeping vistas look especially nice, and I’m sure the large scale battles will be a sight to behold.

Dragon Age: Origins will be out in fall 2014 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

  • Dragon Age III: Inquisition Announced, Coming 2013

Most BioWare fans agree that Dragon Age: Origins was a pretty amazing game. Those same fans agree that Dragon Age II was an abysmal flop that reneged on everything the original game brought to the table. Now BioWare has a chance to get it right with a new game coming out next year.

BioWare announced today that they are currently deep in development on Dragon Age III: Inquisition. There’s not much in the way of details for now, but we do know a few things. The game is being developed by the team that worked on Dragon Age: Origins. It doesn’t confirm that the game will be going back to its strategic roots, but it does inspire hope.

    Dragon Age III

The far more interesting revelation is that BioWare is creating an entirely new engine for Dragon Age III. They started with DICE’s super impressive Frostbite 2 engine as the foundation and are tweaking it to their own needs. The team feels that the new engine will allow them to “deliver a more expansive world, better visuals, more reactivity to player choices, and more customization.”

Unfortunately, that’s all we really know for now. We can jump into baseless speculation, but that would be unfair to the folks at BioWare. After disappointments with Dragon Age II and Mass Effect 3, BioWare has to prove themselves to gamers again. They used to be the most trusted name in Western RPGs, but have lost a lot of that acclaim over the last few years. Dragon Age III is their chance to reclaim their honor.

Will they accomplish such a herculean task? It’s hard to say for now, but it sounds like BioWare is letting the fans dictate the direction that Dragon Age III takes. If anything, it will be interesting to see how this all turns out. I’m remaining skeptical, but I’m willing to give BioWare one more shot.

  • Game Of Thrones RPG Gameplay Trailer Surfaces

It was announced last year that Atlus would be publishing an RPG based on the wildly popular book and TV series, Game of Thrones. While the announcement was met with excitement, there was some disappointment that the game would focus on two new characters to the world’s fictions instead of the characters in the books.

Lord of the Rings: The Third Age pulled a similar story with outside characters looking in and it worked well because it was a fun game. I’m sure some fans will be disappointed, but just having an RPG set in Westeros should be a form of wish fulfillment for most gamers.

The recently released trailer focuses on the gameplay that the Game of Thrones RPG will be implementing. If it looks familiar to you, then you probably played BioWare’s RPG epic Dragon Age: Origins. This isn’t a bad thing since Dragon Age: Origins was pretty awesome.

It does do a few things that sets it apart from BioWare’s RPG series, especially with the active-pause battle system. While Dragon Age would pause the game outright to let you issue orders or use skills, Game of Thrones just slows down time. The developers claim this is to have the game retain the urgency that Game of Thrones is known for. It’s also a good move gameplay wise since it keeps the tension on the player.

Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think:

If the trailer has made you even more excited for the game, you can preorder it to get a really nice Game of Thrones art book.
