Doris Day, Legendary Actress, Turns 90

American actress Doris Day celebrated her 90th birthday on April 3. “I’ve had an amazing life and wonderful times. And I’m happy,” the actress said in an interview with Closer magazine. The actress’ vintage photo is featured on this month’s magazine cover.

Day, born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff, had always dreamed of being a dancer. However, she had a car accident in 1937 wherein she injured her legs. While recovering from her accident, she was singing along to a song on the radio and found out that she had a talent for singing. Her mother then enrolled her in singing lessons.

Her career began when she became a big band singer in 1939. She eventually landed a partnership with Columbia Records and went on to record over 600 songs with them, making her one of the most popular singers of the 20th century. After her contract ended, she was persuaded to audition for Hungarian American film director Michael Curtiz, and she landed the lead role for the movie Romance on the High Seas.

Day has appeared in 39 movies and is one of the top-ranking female box-office stars of all time. She has received numerous acting awards in her career, and though she never won an Oscar, she was nominated for her role in Pillow Talk, featuring co-star Rock Hudson.

In the interview with Closer magazine, Day discussed how it was always her dream to get married, have kids, and cook. “And even though I did all these things, I still ended up in Hollywood.”

Day retired in 1973, but up until now, she is still being offered roles for various projects. “Every once in a while I think about working again, but they don’t make the kind of movies I made anymore! It’s a different world,” she said.

Day is an animal-lover and spends much of her time caring for animals. She founded the Doris Day Animal Foundation and the Doris Day Animal League. For her birthday, she is planning to host a fashion show for rescued dogs in order to help them find homes.

The actress said that although she feels some aches and pains with her age, she still feels “blessed with good health.”

  • Doris Day: Shout-Outs For Her 90th Birthday

“Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be. The future’s not ours to see, que sera sera.”

I wonder what Doris Day was pondering when she sang her signature song – Que Sera, Sera – for the first time when it was released back in 1956?

I bet she never dreamed where life would take her during the past nine decades of her life.

“All I ever wanted in my life was to get married, have kids, keep house and cook, and even though I did all these things, I still ended up in Hollywood,” she told Closer magazine. “It was a great trip. I’ve had an amazing life and wonderful times. And I’m happy!”

The actress and singer turned 90 today, April 3, and she is still just as vibrant and beautiful as she ever was in her heyday.

Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff was born in Cincinnati to a music teacher and a homemaker. Her dream was to be a dancer, but when a tragic automobile accident severely injured her leg, she started singing to compensate, never realizing the blessing in disguise.

She began singing on the radio and had her first real break with several Big Bands, including those led by Barney Rapp and Bob Cosby. She copped her first hit with the single, Sentimental Journey, with Les Brown’s Band.

Her acting career dates from 1947 when she joined Warner Brothers Studios, starring in musicals like Calamity Jane.

By the mid-’50s, she was becoming a bonified superstar, especially with hit films like Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much, in which Que Sera, Sera was introduced.

In 1959, she was in the first of many movies with long-time friend Rock Hudson, in the racy (for its time) romantic comedy Pillow Talk, which led to a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

For many years after that, she was the top box office star in the world.

She has also been known and recognized for her work with animals.

To celebrate her birthday, she will host an event featuring local animal rescues that need to be adopted, and will raise money for her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation.

“I’ve never been a fan of celebrating my own birthdays,” she said. “[And] helping animals has been a lifelong passion. They give us unconditional love and ask very little in return.”

Asked what the years have taught her, the forever girl-next-door said, “Live life to the fullest … It’s not coming back again.”

Shout-outs have been coming from the many stars who have known and worked with her throughout the years.

    Happy birthday Miss Day!

  • Doris Day Plans a Charity Event for 90th Birthday

Screen legend and icon Doris Day will celebrate her 90th birthday by giving back to those who mean the most to her: the animals.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for Day announced her plans for a birthday bash in Carmel, California, where she now resides. This isn’t the typical star studded extravaganza with lavish presents, but a charity event designed to raise money for the nonprofit Doris Day Animal Foundation. The sold-out event will be held at the Cypress Inn.

The attendees of Day’s birthday celebration can expect a doggie fashion show, an adoption event, and a tribute dinner for friends and fans on April 4. To help raise money for the event, Day will auction off autographs from herself and celebrity friends, including Paul McCartney and Tony Bennett. These autographs will be auctioned off online and at the dinner. The online auction ends on April 1.

Day was born on April 3, 1924, but many sources list her birthday as April 3, 1923. The reason for this confusion is that, as a teenager, Day often had to lie about her age to stay employed.

Since leaving show business in the 1970s, her time and devotion has been to animal welfare. The Associated Press reports that  Day said that gifts and cards don’t matter that much to her, but instead she wants to help animals. Day is “all about the four-leggers.”

Day appeared in over 30 films from the 1940s to the1960s, and from 1968-1973, she starred in her own television series called The Doris Day Show. Some of Day’s most popular films are Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk, It Happened to Jane, Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, and the Man Who Knew Too Much. In 2011, Day released a compilation album called My Heart.

Day’s compassion and kindness towards animals shows that class is timeless. Here’s to a happy birthday and many more for the legend Doris Day.

  • Doris Day: 90th B-Day Bash is for “Four-Leggers”

Doris Day is coming up on a big birthday on April 3rd and instead of cards and gifts, the Hollywood legend would like the focus to be somewhere else, according to CBS.

Day is hosting a fundraising bash at her Cypress Inn in Carmel, California to benefit animals, which have been her life and cause since retiring from stage and screen.

She says, “I’m all about the four-leggers.”, and she puts her money and energy behind it. She started the Doris Day Animal Foundation because she felt the animal rescue efforts in the 1970’s were severely lacking.

According to the website, she was “affectionately known to some as ‘The Dog Catcher of Beverly Hills’, Doris would often find unwanted dogs dropped off at her gate. It was not uncommon for her to knock on neighbors’ doors in an attempt to reunite lost dogs with their owners or check to make sure those that were either reunited or in new homes were doing well and receiving proper care and attention.

‘One star was famously quoted as saying, ‘We all had at least one of those Doris Day animals. If you would see Doris on the street or at the studio, chances are you would end up with some homeless cat or dog Doris was sponsoring. She carried around photos of the animals who needed homes, and then she’d actually come over to inspect your house to make sure you were up to it.’”

Her heart for animals is the center of the affair which will include a doggie fashion show, adoption event, and an April 4th tribute dinner for fans and friends. An online auction will begin April 1st featuring items signed by her celebrity friends Paul McCartney, Tony Bennett, and Doris Day herself.

“There is so much work still to do to rescue animals, and to inform people about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets,” Day said.

She is most famous for the dozens of films stretching from the 1940s all the way to the 1960s, including “Pillow Talk” and “Calamity Jane,” and recorded hit songs including “Que Sera, Sera.”
