Significant Marketing Efforts Still Needed For gTLDs

It appears that the both the domain name industry and businesses opting to use new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) may have a great deal of marketing to do to spread awareness about gTLDs. Most consumers are not familiar with the initiative to get sites using over 1,300 new domain options, and at the same time, they don’t like going to domains they don’t recognize.

According to the Domain Name Association (DNA), just a quarter of internet users worldwide are aware of efforts to expand the number of domain names. 55% are completely unaware, and 20% are unsure. eMarketer illustrates the data:

eMarketer, which created the above graph based on the DNA’s findings, says, “The initiative isn’t without controversy. What some view as a ‘blank canvas for innovation’ to spur more creativity, diversity and trust on the internet, others see as costly, exploitative and bound to cause consumer confusion. Nonetheless, it continues to move forward, requiring all internet users to adapt.”

The lack of awareness may not be as big a problem as the lack of trust about unfamiliar domains, considering that search is the way most people are getting to content.

The DNA said, “Consumers trust domain names as THE most trustworthy way to navigate the Internet. The majority of consumers say they are most confident in the security of links they have bookmarked or have typed directly into the web browser. Ranked next, consumers most trust search results WHEN THEY RECOGNIZE THE DOMAIN NAME or url. Then further down the list are search results delivering an unknown web address. So people use search slightly more often but click on search results with recognized addresses and trust known or typed-in domain names.”

It also says that new domain extensions that identify brands or security attributes are likely to increase user trust.

Discussing a recent survey from NCC Group Trust, the DNA says, “60% of respondents stated that the ‘Websites associated with a known brand or company’ provide an increased sense of security. To me, this says that loans.chase will be seen as clearly more secure than chaseonlineloans.com where Chase can build brand awareness (and where long domain names with brand names embedded are often a source of Phishing attack). Similarly and in a short period of time, onlinepayment.bank and onlinepayment.secure will be able to build awareness as secure places.”

Again, this just shows how important the marketing of these gTLDs is going to be to businesses who are using them. But even businesses themselves need to be marketed to as well.

DomainMart CEO Alex Tajirian says, “Success requires cooperation among registries and resellers when it comes to sales and marketing. Impulse buying aside, a product’s sales are driven by the product’s utility, which is why some professionals believe that the main objective of marketing is to create awareness of a product’s utility. If people find the product useful, they will pay the right price. Hence, when businesses don’t register new gTLDs, it can mean one of three things: the businesses aren’t aware of the gTLDs’ existence, they don’t understand the things’ utility/benefits, or the price is too high to be cost-effective.”

“Instead of targeting every unaware business and trying to change the minds of others regarding the new gTLDs’ utility, I propose a targeted and focused marketing audience,” he writes. “Start by focusing on undecided managers and those who are not aware of the new domains; then expand to a broader audience. One such audience is start-ups. They can be reached with booths at tech conferences, ads on online tech sites, and use of traditional marketing venues in high-tech hubs such as Silicon Valley.”

Aditya Chauhan, a Business Development Strategist at LogicBoxes, writes at DomainNameWire that increasing awareness is one of the three biggest challenges facing new gTLDs, calling this a “nightmare for registries”.

“Not only do they have to bear the burden of marketing their product, but also the need to educate customers about nTLDs [new TLDs] as a whole,” she says. “This is something that .CLUB seems to have handled remarkably well on a global scale. By using well known faces to endorse and use their product, .CLUB has spread both awareness and acceptance amongst their target audience. However, there’s still a long way to go to make nTLDs more mainstream.”

Donuts, which is the largest registry for new gTLDs, recently unveiled what’s being called a “marketing offensive” aimed at “spreading the new gTLD gospel to small businesses in the US,” as Trevor Little at World Trademark Review puts it.

The good news is that according to Donuts, several studies by search experts have found that the first generation of new gTLD addresses are matching or outperforming legacy gTLDs and ccTLDs in search performance.

  • Cronut Bakery Reopens Tuesday After Mouse Infestation

On Friday April 4, the Commissioner of Health and Mental Hygiene closed down Dominique Ansel Bakery in the Soho area of Manhattan, New York following a rodent infestation.

The bakery is famously known for cronuts-a crème-filled croissant-mixed-donut.

Loyal customers line the sidewalk of 189 Spring St. daily to grab one of these sweet treats-sometimes even before the store opens.

These desserts have apparently become a major “food craze in New York.”

But it also seems that Dominique Ansel Bakery customers are not the only ones who are fans of delicious cronuts.

A customer reported the infestation to local journalists after video recording a mouse running across the floor of the restaurant.

Amy Ma, a rep with Dominique Ansel Bakery, told the New York Post that the establishment is quite offended that a customer would report the issue to the media before presenting it to the owner first.

“We had a customer who took a video of one mouse that ran across the bakery floor and sent it as a tip to journalists without informing our staff,” Ma said.

After the first visit by health inspectors, the doors to the bakery were immediately bolted from outside visits.

The Department of Health demanded the problem to be fixed before the bakery was given the green light to reopen.

The rep told sources that she was surprised that the bakery wasn’t given another inspection, but shut down so promptly.

“After an entire night of deep cleaning [and not finding any mice] we were visited by not one, but four health department inspectors today,” Ma said.

Ma says that professional pest control workers were called in to re-cement and exterminate the shop-especially the basement.

The health department approved the shop’s condition on Monday. The bakery will be back in business Tuesday.

  • Krispy Kreme Adds Two New Doughnut Flavors

The next time you are drawn to the lure of Krispy Kreme’s red “Hot Now” sign, instead of buying only a dozen hot glazed doughnuts, you might want to try out one of the doughnut chain’s two new flavors. The North Carolina based chain has decided to collide the two wonderful worlds of coffee and doughnuts by introducing two coffee-flavored doughnuts. These two new flavors are available at participating locations in the United States and Canada.

Krispy Kreme offers more than a dozen different doughnut flavors on its menu, and now customers can purchase Mocha Kreme and Caramel Coffee Kreme doughnuts. According to Krispy Kreme’s description of the Mocha Kreme doughnut, it is a “moist yeast doughnut filled with a tasty blend of chocolate and coffee flavors, topped with mocha icing, a milk chocolate swirl and decorated with milk chocolate icing.” As tasty as that sounds, the Caramel Coffee Kreme’s description might sound even more heavenly. This doughnut is described as being a “decadent glazed treat topped with smooth caramel and coffee flavored icing, a mocha drizzle and dollop of coffee Kreme.”

Check out pictures of the two new doughnuts below.

    (image)

The news of Krispy Kreme’s two new flavors might sting a little for those still working on their New Year’s resolutions, but if coffee and doughnuts are two of your favorite things, you might not want to hold off on trying out the new doughnuts for too long–these two flavors are available for a limited time only. The two flavors were added the display cases on Monday, and Krispy Kreme hasn’t yet mentioned how long they plan to keep the doughnuts before yanking them. Since the doughnuts aren’t tied to a holiday theme, like Krispy Kreme’s recent Valentine doughnuts that hung around for a couple of weeks, maybe these will stick around for a while.

Judging from the number of ‘likes’ the announcement of the new flavors received on Krispy Kreme’s Facebook page, it appears many fans are excited to try them out. If coffee isn’t your thing, which doughnut flavor would you like to see added to Krispy Kreme’s lineup? Add your comments below.

  • Krispy Kreme Gives Us Two New Flavors

If you love coffee and donuts, then you will be thrilled to hear about what’s coming to Krispy Kreme. The company has just unveiled not one but two brand new coffee-flavored donuts.

The first flavor is the Mocha Kreme. It is described as a “moist yeast doughnut filled with a tasty blend of chocolate and coffee flavors”. Yum! The donut is topped with a mocha-flavored icing, milk chocolate swirl, and carefully decorated with milk chocolate icing.

The second choice, the Caramel Coffee Kreme, manages to combine caramel and coffee flavors in an icing, with a drizzling of mocha and dollop of “coffee-flavored Kreme”.

These donuts weren’t the only coffee-related items revealed to be coming to Krispy Kreme. The company recently announced that it is teaming up with Green Mountain to sell coffee. The single serve Keurig brewers are big business for coffee companies.

Is anyone really surprised that a donut company would try and muscle in? It seems predictable enough, but Krispy Kreme is taking a slow and cautious approach. For now, their “K-cups” will be one of two flavors: Smooth or Decaf.

It’s likely that as Krispy Kreme finds its footing, new flavors will be introduced over time.

Getting back to donuts, the new flavors will likely be a hit with anyone who loves their coffee and donuts. They can now have all the coffee flavor…and none of the soggy donut!

The only potential downside is that this seems to be a limited time offer. Which is why you are encouraged to get to your nearest Krispy Kreme to try one or both of the fantastic flavors before March 30th.

The flavors are available right now while supplies last, and if enough people compliment them perhaps (fingers crossed) these delicious donuts will stick around.

Or perhaps while Krispy Kreme will be inclined to introduce hot cocoa flavored donuts in the near future.

What do you think of the new Krispy Kreme donut flavors? Got a favorite donut flavor you’d like to recommend? Share away!

  • Dunkin’ Donuts Doesn’t Want To Be A Donut Company Anymore

Dunkin’ Donuts saw a meteoric rise in the ’80s with a series of commercials featuring Fred the Baker, whose slogan “Time to make the donuts” became as well-known as the Wendy’s lady and her “Where’s the beef?” query.

But the company says they aren’t just a doughnut shop; in fact, they want to focus on their coffee, which is a huge seller on retail shelves and offers a less pricey alternative to potential Starbucks customers.

“We are a beverage company,” Paul Carbone, the company’s CFO, said.

Indeed, coffee and beverage sales make up 58% of their sales nowadays, and that spells big business for those in charge. Now, they’re focusing on a media campaign that will drive sales out West, where there currently isn’t a Dunkin’ Donuts presence, and the promotions will mostly be beverage-driven. They’re also about to introduce gluten-free muffins and doughnuts, which will appeal to a mass audience and will likely go over well in health-conscious California. The state boasts over 2,000 Starbucks alone, while Dunkin’ Donuts has 7,400 shops scattered around the U.S. They will be the first major fast-food company to offer a wheat-free product.

“At Dunkin’ Donuts, we recognize the importance of providing our guests with many options, including alternative choices for people with food and dietary restrictions,” said Michelle King, director of global public relations.

  • Dunkin’ Donuts Moves Into Southern California

Dunkin’ Donuts this week announced it will be expanding its stores into Southern California. The restaurant’s goal is to have more than 15,000 Dunkin’ Donuts locations throughout the U.S.

Multi-unit franchisees are now being recruited throughout the Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura, and Orange counties. New Dunkin’ Donuts locations are expected to open in the area starting in 2015. The company is also looking to sell donuts and coffee in universities, casinos, military bases, supermarkets, airports, and travel centers.

“This past year was an exciting one for Dunkin’ Donuts’ growth in the United States, and we are delighted to begin 2013 with the long-awaited announcement that Dunkin’ Donuts will be opening restaurants in California, where there is already incredible passion for our brand,” said Nigel Travis, CEO of Dunkin’ Brands and president of Dunkin’ Donuts U.S. “Expansion to California has always been part of our plan to grow Dunkin’ Donuts’ presence in the U.S. We have maintained our disciplined approach to expand steadily while focusing on initiatives to improve restaurant economics and franchisee profitability. These initiatives include our recent agreement with our franchisee-owned and operated distribution and procurement facility, which ensures the same cost of goods to franchisees in both established and new markets by 2015.”

Dunkin’ Donuts also announced that it opened 291 new locations in the U.S. during 2012. It has plans to open 330 to 360 new locations in the U.S. in 2013, and not just in Southern California.

“In addition to California, we believe we have incredible domestic growth opportunities for Dunkin’ Donuts, both east and west of the Mississippi. On a global basis, we remain committed to our long-term development goal, which calls for us to accelerate to approximately a 5 percent net new annual development rate for Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins combined,” said Travis.

  • Demand Media Applies For 26 gTLDs, Partners With Donuts For More

Demand Media announced this morning that it is pursuing some new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs). Specifically, the company says it has selected names in categories connected to ecommerce, personal & professional identity, education, entertainment, internet life, sports, small business and social media.

“We believe the new gTLD program represents a significant milestone in the evolution of the Internet,” said CEO Richard Rosenblatt. “In addition to delivering more choice for consumers and business owners, we expect the domain name expansion to spur innovation and new business opportunities.”

The company has applied for 26 names on a stand-alone basis. It has also partnered with Donuts Inc. so that it may acquire rights in certain gTLDs, after they’re awarded to Donuts by ICANN.

Demand Media tells WebProNews it will not comment further on specifics.

We did speak with Donuts Vice President of Communications and Industry Relations, Mason Cole, who told us, “If you look at the existing namespace, there are only 22 existing generic told level domains. There are hundreds of country coded TLDs, like .jp for Japan, and so on, but in the generic name space, it’s awfully constrained. It’s very hard to find a good Internet identity that a company, or a person, or a family, or a new product, or a cause of some kind can use to identify themselves and promote their interests on the web.”

Watch the video for the full interview:

Donuts CEO, Paul Stahura said, “As previously announced, Donuts has raised more than $100 million in funding to pursue the new gTLD opportunity. Donuts’ strategic arrangement with Demand Media takes us well beyond that $100 million funding and enables both companies to utilize additional resources, expertise and talent to generate the most value and benefits for customers from this historic opportunity.”

Last week, Donuts announced that it selected Demand Media Europe (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Demand Media), as its registry services provider.

  • National Donut Day Means Free Donuts Today

Every year The Salvation Army declares June 1 National Donut Day in honor of the Salvation Army “donut girls” who served donuts to soldiers in Europe during World War I. The organization has a short, wholesome video on the subject that you can view below. It’s sure to make you feel warm and fuzzy about the U.S., but that’s just The Salvation Army’s interpretation of the day. What National Donut Day really means to most of us is free donuts.

Both Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme are giving away donuts at their in-store locations in celebration of the holiday. To receive a free donut from Dunkin’ Donuts, customers must purchase a beverage at the store, but Krispy Kreme claims that any customer can receive any one donut of his or her choice for free – no purchase necessary.

Krispy Kreme has had its “Krispy Kreme Cruiser” parked on Wall Street today, and the company’s CEO and CFO rang the closing bell for the New York Stock Exchange. Dunkin’ Donuts has been running a Twitter contest, giving their followers a chance to win $50 Dunkin’ Donuts gift certificates for answering an hourly donut quiz question.

Take a look below the video to see some of the sugar-high-influenced tweets caused by National Donut Day. And don’t forget to pick up your free donut on the way home from work.
