Oracle Forms New Cloud and AI Organization

Oracle has formed a new organization, focused on the cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) and helmed by executive VP Don Johnson.

Oracle has been making significant headway in the cloud market, although it still lags behind market leaders AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Nonetheless, the company is doubling down on its cloud and AI business, and has scored some big wins agains its bigger rivals.

According to Business Insider, Oracle is tapping Don Johnson, the former Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) boss to run the new organization, called Oracle Cloud Platform & AI Services. Johnson was once considered a top contender for the co-CEO job, making his appointment to the new role an indication of its importance.

Interestingly, the new organization does not replace or operate independently of OCI, but will serve as an extension and expansion of it.

“It’s important to note: this is an extension of OCI, not a division of it,” said an email announcing the change that was seen by Business Insider. “Together we’ll operate this as a unified OCI team, with a common all-hands, product roadmap, the usual meetings and processes, etc. One big tent and a common culture.”

The email also emphasized how much the company is betting on the cloud moving forward.

“Oracle is now fundamentally a cloud company, with a clear and simple vision: a marriage of the best cloud infrastructure, and leading data platform, together with the most pervasive cloud applications,” the email continued.

  • Oracle Announces Additional Hiring to Boost Cloud Services

Oracle Announces Additional Hiring to Boost Cloud Services

Oracle is boosting its cloud efforts with an announcement that it is hiring some 2,000 new employees. While Amazon, Microsoft and, to some extent, Google have dominated the cloud market, Oracle sees ongoing opportunity to expand.

Oracle has been making moves to take on the leaders, including opening offices in Microsoft’s back yard. Even more surprising, earlier this year Oracle announced a cloud partnership with Microsoft, working to ensure their products work seamlessly across each other’s cloud platforms.

As Oracle continues its cloud expansion, the company is counting on the relative infancy of the market, along with the overall lack of penetration. In addition, Oracle is uniquely positioned to deliver the entire range of cloud service.

“Cloud is still in its early days with less than 20 percent penetration today, and enterprises are just beginning to use cloud for mission-critical workloads,” said Don Johnson, executive vice president, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. “Our aggressive hiring and growth plans are mapped to meet the needs of our customers, providing them reliability, high performance, and robust security as they continue to move to the cloud.”

Oracle currently operates 16 cloud regions globally, with 12 of those being added in the past year. The company plans to add an additional 20 regions by the end of 2020, no doubt with the help of the 2,000 additional hires. By focusing on adding more regions, Oracle stands to gain strong footholds in regional and niche markets that the Big Three haven’t wrapped up.

“Eleven countries or jurisdictions will have region pairs that facilitate enterprise-class, multi-region, disaster-recovery strategies to better support those customers who want to store their data in-country or in-region.

“Today, Oracle is the only company delivering a complete and integrated set of cloud services and building intelligence into every layer of the cloud. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s growing talent base will ensure customers continue to benefit from best-in-class security, consistent high performance, simple predictable pricing, and the tools and expertise needed to bring enterprise workloads to cloud quickly and efficiently.

“In addition to rapid hiring, Oracle will make additional real estate investments to support the expanded Oracle Cloud Infrastructure workforce.”

  • Melanie Griffith, Don Johnson Support Daughter Dakota Johnson at “How to Be Single” Premiere

Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson have been divorced for a long time, but they came together on Wednesday night to support their daughter Dakota Johnson as her latest film, How to Be Single premiered in New York City.

Donning skinny leather pants and a long black coat, Melanie Griffith looked lovely as she posed alongside Don Johnson inside the venue.

It was back in 1976 when Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson tied the knot–the first time. That marriage lasted just six months, but 13 years later–in 1989–the two gave it another try. That time their marriage lasted about six years.

Don Johnson got married again in 1999 to Kelley Phleger. The two are still married, and Phleger attended Dakota Johnson’s big premiere–politely staying in the shadows as Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson posed for pics with their daughter. Half-brother Jesse Johnson–Don Johnson and Kelley Phleger’s son–joined in the family photos.

Dakota Johnson stars in How to Be Single alongside Rebel Wilson. The film allows Dakota to show off her humorous side–something that wasn’t nearly as obvious in Fifty Shades of Grey.

It was just over a week ago that Dakota Johnson shared that it’s not always easy having famous parents like Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. She cited watching her parents have sex with other people in films as one of the hardships.

Kudos to Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson–along with Don’s wife Kelley Phleger–for putting Dakota Johnson first at her premiere–casting aside any animosities they may have, and celebrating her latest achievement.

  • Dakota Johnson: Having Famous Parents (Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson) Comes With A Price

Dakota Johnson grew up with famous parents. Dad Don Johnson was the very sexy star of Miami Vice in the 1980s, and recently starred in Blood and Oil on ABC. Mom Melanie Griffith has long been a film star, playing roles in Working Girl, Body Double, The Bonfire of the Vanities, Paradise, and Now and Then, to name just a few.

During a recent interview with Net-A-Porter’s digital magazine The Edit, Dakota Johnson explained how she often spent time on sets where her parents were working, and while that could be very exciting, it could make her very uncomfortable, too.

“I was around for a lot of it and I would watch them,” the Fifty Shades of Grey star shared. “But there were things I could see that I didn’t want to, like watch my parents have sex with other people.”

Also recalling a moment of on-set violence, Dakota Johnson was a bit unnerved by that as well.

“And there was a scene where my mom got slapped in the face,” she said. “I lost my mind! I couldn’t deal with that at all.”

Dakota Johnson likely understands then just how difficult it was for her mom, Melanie Griffith’s, initial refusal to watch her in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Something else Johnson is having some trouble with is the lack of privacy that accompanies her job as a film star.

“It almost feels like a free-for-all nowadays,” she explains. “There’s no more mystery, no more elegancy. The Golden Globes, for example, used to be so special. It was a time when you got to see your favorite people, who were making your favorite movies, all interacting with each other; having some witty banter, being enticing and charming. You didn’t see any actors unless they were on the red carpet; they weren’t publicly photographed all the time. Now anyone can take my picture, and I can take anyone’s picture, at any moment. I feel like something has been lost.”

If you weighed the odds of having famous parents like Dakota Johnson, would the sex scenes you’d occasionally see make it worth giving up the notoriety?

How difficult do you suppose living in the limelight, the way Dakota Johnson does, might suit you? Do you expect you’d get sick of the lack of privacy, too?

  • Dakota Johnson Gets Bleeped on “Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon”

Dakota Fallon was a guest last week on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, and she managed to do something only a handful of the late night host’s guests cab claim.

It was while playing a game–one Dakota Fallon was teaching to Jimmy Fallon–that she inadvertently dropped the F-bomb. Fortunately the show is pre-recorded hours before it hits the air, so her expletive was bleeped out.

The Fifty Shades of Grey actress introduced Jimmy Fallon to what she called “The Acting Game.” She explained that her family played it over the holidays. (Dakota Johnson is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.)

The object is to act out a given scenario when answering the phone. Dakota Johnson’s scenario was that her fiance, who just happened to be Darth Vader, was calling to say he was leaving her for another woman.

“Hi babe, did you just wake up?” Dakota Johnson asked. “You’re what? Where are you?! Who the f**k?”

Jimmy Fallon–while laughing hysterically–told her to hang up the phone.

Dakota Johnson proved earlier in January that she can take whatever comes her way in stride. While at the Peoples Choice Awards Leslie Mann accidentally broke the zipper on her crop top when the two embraced.

“Leslie just broke my dress,” Johnson said as she accepted her award for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress. “OK, well it’s not like nobody hasn’t already seen my boobs.”

Did you catch Dakota Johnson on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon this week?

Wouldn’t you love to try your hand at her game? Of course it might not be as much fun if Jimmy Fallon isn’t on hand.

  • Dakota Johnson Shows Off Comedic Chops in ‘How to Be Single’ Trailer With Rebel Wilson

Who knew Dakota Johnson had comedic chops?

In a new How to Be Single trailer released Wednesday, Dakota Johnson, 26, portrays a young, 20-something gal trying to navigate the single life after a breakup with the 35-year-old Australian star’s help.

Along for the ride are Mad Men actress Alison Brie and Funny People star Leslie Mann, who co-star as Johnson and Wilson’s friends.

As Dakota’s character begins dating, which include Anders Holm (The Mindy Project), Damon Wayans, Jr. (New Girl) and Jake Lacy (The Office) as potential suitors, she finds that it’s not as fun as she might have thought.

Also starring in the film are Nicholas Braun (Sky High), Jason Mantzoukas (The League) and Nick Bateman (The Originals).

Christian Ditter (Love, Rosie) directed the romp and actress Drew Barrymore served as producer. Based on the Liz Tuccillo book of the same name, the movie was adapted by He’s Just Not That Into You writers Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn.

This is quite a departure for Johnson, who is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson and is best known for playing Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Dakota Johnson’s is next slated for A Bigger Splash with Ralph Fiennes. Rebel Wilson, best known as Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect films, will next star in The Brothers Grimsby with Sacha Baron Cohen.

What do you think of the trailer and Dakota Johnson‘s transition from Fifty Shades of Grey to comedy?

  • Dakota Johnson: Mom Melanie Griffith and Dad Don Johnson on Hand for ‘SNL’ Hosting Gig

Dakota Johnson hosted SNL this weekend to mixed reviews. Mom Melanie Griffith and Dad Don Johnson were on hand to lend their support. Melanie Griffith believes their daughter aced her hosting gig.

This was the first time hosting SNL for the Fifty Shades of Grey actress. She reminisced about a time when Melanie Griffith did the same thing.

In December of 1988, Dakota Johnson explained, “my mother stood in this exact spot and hosted SNL.”

She added that after that show, her dad, Don Johnson, proposed, “for the second time.”

At that point in Dakota Johnson’s monologue, the camera panned to the audience, where Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson jokingly shielded their eyes.

A skit Dakota Johnson performed a bit later on Saturday Night Live, has drawn significant criticism. In the skit, Johnson plays an ISIS recruit.

“Are you sure you don’t want to do another year of high school?” the father, played by SNL’s Taran Killim, asks.

“Dad, it’s just ISIS,” Johnson replies, and runs off to a truck filled with armed gunmen.

Taran Killim actually praised the skit and the freedom to perform mockery in a Twitter post.

Did you catch Dakota Johnson hosting SNL on Saturday? Wasn’t it fun to see Melanie Griffth (who really no longer looks like Melanie Griffith) and Don Johnson in the audience?

And what’s your take on the ISIS skit in which both Dakota Johnson and Taran Killim performed? Do you think it was in poor taste, given the number of people–including Americans–the group has murdered?

  • Melanie Griffith Reunites With Ex-Husband Don Johnson On ‘SNL’ To Support Their Daugher

Fifty Shades of Grey star, Dakota Johnson, hosted Saturday Night Live this week and she brought some familiar faces for her opening monologue. Dakota’s monologue became a family affair when her parents Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson took part in a short skit about how Dakota was probably conceived during Griffith’s SNL hosting stint in 1988. Dakota revealed that her dad proposed to Griffith a second time during the guest appearance. Nine months later, Dakota was born. She joked that she “must have been conceived that night after the show, or maybe even during the show.”

Dakota then confirmed it to Melanie and Don who were in the audience. The estranged couple were averting their eyes, but confirmed that the timeline was about right. When asked about what was wrong, Don Johnson admitted, “We were just afraid you were going to be naked.”

This is a reference to Griffith’s interview during the Oscar red carpet where she revealed that she’s not interested in seeing her daughter’s raunchy film. The moment became a trending topic on social media, with people commenting on the awkwardness between Melanie and Dakota.

So Dakota spoofs the spat with her mom on ‘SNL’

The SNL guesting is the first time Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson were seen in public together after they parted ways in 1994. Earlier in the week, the two were seen at LAX prior to their flight to New York for Dakota’s Saturday Night Live appearance.

Melanie Griffith, Don Johnson Reunite to Watch Daughter Dakota Johnson Host ‘SNL’

Melanie Griffith and former husband Don Johnson reunited Saturday to cheer on their daughter Dakota Johnson as she hosted Saturday Night Live.

Dakota Johnson followed in her mom Melanie Griffith’s footsteps Saturday by hosting Saturday Night Live.

Mom Melanie Griffith hosted in the ’80s and last night Dakota Johnson had her turn with her parents in the audience.

Dakota Johnson mocked Fifty Shades of Grey, the film that has made her a household name.

“I have a feeling at next year’s Oscars, it’s going to be… not anywhere,” she predicted glumly.

Dakota Johnson, who has had a huge month with the release of Fifty Shades of Grey, then pointed out that the movie has “already made like $500 million” and has a “very specific group of fans.”

A leather-clad man then interrupted, but Dakota Johnson said she wasn’t taking any audience questions.

“What if I begged?” he asked, before saying he wanted Johnson to sign wife’s ball gag.

Dakota Johnson then explained who her parents are and shared that her dad proposed to her mom on the show.

“In December of 1988, my mother stood in exact spot and hosted ‘SNL,’” she said. “And this is true — right after the show, my father got down on one knee and proposed to her, for the second time. And exactly 9 months later I was born. So I must’ve been conceived after the show or even during the show.”

The camera then showed Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson in the audience, shielding their eyes.

When asked if they were still embarrassed, dad Don Johnson quipped, “We were just afraid you were going to be naked.”

  • Dakota Johnson’s SNL Monologue Mocks ’50 Shades of Grey,’ Features Parents Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson

Dakota Johnson has had quite the month with the release of her much-anticipated film Fifty Shades of Grey.

Dakota Johnson rounded out her stellar month by following in her mom Melanie Griffith’s footsteps Saturday by hosting Saturday Night Live.

Mom Melanie Griffith hosted in the ’80s and last night Dakota Johnson had her turn by taking on a variety of characters, including aa introverted blogger, an ISIS recruit and even Emma Stone.

Dakota Johnson started her monologue by dissing the latest New York weather.

“New York is so beautiful this time of year; just kidding” said Johnson.

Dakota Johnson then mocked the film that has made her a household name, Fifty Shades of Grey.

“I have a feeling at next year’s Oscars, it’s going to be… not anywhere,” she predicted glumly.

She then pointed out that the movie has “already made like $500 million” and has a “very specific group of fans.”

A leather-clad man then interrupted, but Dakota Johnson said she wasn’t taking any audience questions.

“What if I begged?” he asked, before saying he wanted Johnson to sign wife’s ball gag.

Johnson explained who her parents are and shared about her mom hosting the show.

“In December of 1988, my mother stood in exact spot and hosted ‘SNL,’” she said.

Johnson asked her parents if they were embarrassed to watch her now.

“We were just afraid you were going to be naked,” quipped Don Johnson.

  • Antonio Banderas Who? Melanie Griffith Says ‘Life Is Good’

Antonio Banderas seems to be just a page from the past for Melanie Griffith, who is not wasting too much time mourning the divorce from her husband of 18 years.

Instead, the Working Girl actress is focused on “finding great work and having a good time.”

“My kids are almost grown. I’m getting divorced. I’m just happy,” she told IndieWire. “I’m really joyful. Life is good.”

Griffith, 56, has got some great gigs lined up in the future. In January, she’ll open on Broadway in the reboot of Pippen. She has a comedy in the works with Bob Saget, and she is promoting Thirst, a short film in which she plays an alcoholic prostitute.

The not-so-heartbroken actress says playing a worn-out alcoholic in Thirst was a cathartic experience — one that has helped her turn the page on the past.

“When I read the story for Thirst, I loved it, because I’m an alcoholic. I don’t drink anymore, but I did. So that really attracted me to it because I wanted to play that kind of part,” said Griffith.

“I had a reputation with people in my industry as being a wild child, being a drug addict and an alcoholic,” she continued. “After being sober for five years, this part comes along and felt like if I could act it out and do it — not for anyone else, just for me — to do that harsh of a life of an alcoholic, I would be able to get it out. I found it difficult to watch myself the first time, because I went, ‘Oh my God, I look so old!’ Stupid s**t like that. Then the next time I watched it, I cried, because I could separate myself from myself and look at the story.”

One thing she won’t be looking forward to is watching her daughter, Dakota Johnson, in 50 Shades of Grey. Dakota told Griffith and her dad, Don Johnson, she didn’t feel comfortable having her parents see her in the risqué film.

“I have not seen 50 Shades of Grey,” said Griffith. “I don’t think I’m going to see it…[Dakota] was like, “You guys cannot come. There’s no way.” So we’re not going. I did go visit for a couple of days when they were shooting just normal stuff. I did see the Room of Pain – I did go in there and check it out.”

  • Don Johnson Gets $19 Million In Lawsuit For “Nash Bridges”

Don Johnson may have won over a large fanbase in the ’80s with “Miami Vice”, but he went on to star in another hit show, and has been involved in an unfortunate battle with the producers since 2010 for what he claimed was rightfully his.

Johnson starred with Cheech Marin on “Nash Bridges”, which ran from 1996-2001 and was enormously successful for the USA network. According to Johnson’s contract with the show, he was to receive 50% of the profits if there were more than 66 episodes filmed. But after 122 episodes, he still hadn’t been paid. Johnson sued Rysher Entertainment in 2010 for not living up to their end of the bargain, and the case has been drawn out ever since.

Although Rysher was originally ordered to pay Johnson $23 million plus interest back in 2010, there has been some dispute over exactly how much the actor was owed, which stalled things in court. But the parties have come to an agreement, and Johnson has accepted $19 million in order to settle the case.
