  • Jordan McGraw and Band Help Dr. Phil McGraw Present Romantic Valentine to Wife Robin

Jordan McGraw and his band Hundred Handed helped his dad Phil McGraw present an early–and very romantic–Valentine to wife Robin on Friday’s episode of Dr. Phil.

The band performed their song “Doctor,” featuring Jordan McGraw’s girlfriend Kato on lead vocals, on Dr. Phil.

“It’s a love song that she just loves, so I hit a double home run!” Dr. Phil said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

Dr. Phil had been trying for 10 years to get Jordan McGraw’s band on the show. He says the wait was well worth it, however. He feels quite certain he scored lots of points with Robin for his efforts in the romance category.

“I should be golden for 10 years!” Dr. Phil said.

“I have to say he’s right,” Robin McGraw added.

Kudos to Jordan McGraw, his girlfriend Kato, and the rest of Hundred Handed for appearing on Dr. Phil.

And kudos to Dr. Phil, who has now likely knocked the sails out of men everywhere–especially those who hoped to do something extra romantic for Valentine’s Day. His utilization of son Jordan McGraw’s band to wish Robin Happy Valentine’s Day now makes just about everything else pale in comparison.

  • Dr. Frank Jobe: Sports Medicine Pioneer Passes Away At 88

Renowned American orthopedic surgeon Dr. Frank Jobe has died, according to an official statement made by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. He had been hospitalized in Santa Monica shortly before his death due to an unnamed illness. Jobe was 88 years old and a team physician for the Dodgers for 50 seasons.

Dr. Jobe is credited for creating and developing the Tommy John surgery – a breakthrough in the field of surgery in which a tendon from any part of the body is transplanted to a damaged ulnar collateral ligament or UCL in the medial elbow. Dr. Jobe performed this procedure for the first time in 1974 on major league pitcher Tommy John; hence the name.

Prior to the surgery, athletes who suffered from a ruptured UCL had no means of repairing it, but the Tommy John surgery completely changed that. Tommy John spent an entire year recovering from the surgery and went on to win 164 games in a span of 14 years afterwards.

Not only did Dr. Jobe invent the Tommy John surgery, but he also refined it and trained numerous orthopedic surgeons. It is now one of the most common baseball-related surgical procedures among collegiate and professional athletes.

Before joining the Dodgers medical team, Dr. Jobe was a consultant and active practitioner at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic, which specializes in sports medicine. He was team physician for 40 years before being appointed as special advisor to the chairman of the Dodgers in 2008.

Dr. Jobe has been recommended to be a nominee in the National Baseball Hall of Fame even though he never played the game. An official campaign to have Dr. Jobe inducted into the Hall of Fame was launched in August 2012 and last year, the organization honored him informally in March 2013.

Apart from his massive contribution to sports medicine, Dr. Jobe also served in World War II as an army medic. He also wrote more than 100 medical publications and received Honorary Doctorates from Japan and the United States.

  • Adult ADHD: Adam Levine, Channing Tatum, And Fixes For You

“When I can’t pay attention, I really can’t pay attention,” says Adam Levine.

The Maroon 5 singer recently revealed that he has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in a “Own Your ADHD” PSA. Levine wanted to share his struggle to encourage others going through it to seek help. The disease, often characterized by hyperactivity, impulsiveness, inability to focus, and a short attention span, reportedly affects about 3% to 5% of children and adults in the United States.

The frontman isn’t alone in the realm of ADHD celebrities. Channing Tatum, diagnosed as a child with both ADHD and dyslexia described his experience with prescriptions, “For a time, it would work well, then it worked less and my pain was more. I would go through wild bouts of depression, horrible comedowns.” He added, “I understand why kids kill themselves. I absolutely do. You feel terrible. You feel soul-less. I’d never do it to my child.”

Tatum is joined by Michael Phelps in the group of public figures with ADHD who nixed scripts. The Olympic swimmer and 18 time gold medal winner eventually opted to pass on the pills and manage his condition via workouts and a low-sugar diet.

Indeed, Gen. Arthur Dean, chairman and CEO of Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, reported that ADHD drugs can be habit-forming with grave side effects. He explained they can “cause hallucinations and raise heart rate too quickly,” adding that, “the longer you’re on them, the more problems they can cause.”

    Misdiagnosis?
While some pass it off as a “fabricated disorder”, many medical professionals tend to disagree. In her article for Maclean’s Magazine, Kate Lunau interviewed specialists on this issue, saying, “You know, ADHD is a real condition.” She went on to add:

“It is chronic, it can last a lifetime, and it can be very serious. But I think increasingly, there’s a lot of concern that at least some of these kids are being misdiagnosed.”

    What can people do, then?

    Habit Hacks
For those who want to address this affliction head on without potential repercussions of prescriptions, a few lifestyle tweaks might be helpful. Dr. Oz indicates “Treatment proceeds with a re-structuring of one’s life. Usually, disorganization is a leading problem in the life of the person who has ADHD. Often an organizational coach can help enormously in developing new habits of organization and time management.”

    Diet Mods
It sounds simple, but we often fall prey to our own poor diet and exercise habits. Among supplements suggested have been: essential fatty acids, flaxseed oil and vitamin C, magnesium, B vitamins, fishoil, and probiotics.

A few dietary modifications, include less sugar and more vitamins and minerals. It might sound daunting, but don’t let the price tag on the organic produce send you sprinting to the sanctuary of the golden arches. Just as Michael Phelps weaned off his ADHD meds, we can slowly wean off bad foods like drinks with artificial sweeteners, additives, and processed gunk (however magically delicious it might taste for the moment it’s in our mouths).

Try label-checking, too. When you hit the fruit aisle, observe those little stickers on your fruit. The ones that have a “9” and five digits on them are the organic labels. Do you like eating cows? Make sure you know what they eat! Grass-fed is optimal, as a creature chock full of artificial stuff can’t be good. Seeing as cannibal-cows were said to be how mad cow disease began, beef eaters might research what their dinner itself is dining on –ADHD affliction or not.

Even on a healthy diet, too much of a good thing is still a bad thing.

When I went vegan the first time, I gained ten pounds in ten seconds. That’s when the obvious truth hit me: there are no easy fixes, moderation is key and (surprisingly) that after binging on the healthiest fridge remnants at midnight, waking up feels reminiscent of the morning after your 21st birthday.

    Action!
For more active hacks on your disorder, physical exercise, 4 times per week, is said to be a great help. Dr. John Ratey’s book, Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, describes physical exercise as being among “the best treatments we have for ADHD.”

    Or… you could try meditation.

    Stillness
Wait, what? A hyperactive human sitting in stillness? Am I crazy? Lidia Zylowska, M.D, a psychiatrist and founding member of the Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) doesn’t seem to think so. It might sound counter-intuitive, but after a study done on ADHD patients, she reported:

“It is feasible to teach people with ADHD mindfulness. On the surface it looks like a contradiction, but if you look at it, if you look at the nature of self-regulation, it’s not.”

It’s really not so insane a concept. They asked participants to just start with five minutes at a time. From there, they slowly increased it to 20 minutes. The thing is, there’s more than just one type of meditation. You don’t have to wear special garb or sit with crossed legs or (and this part’s important) you don’t have to even sit still.

Yep. There’s something called “walking meditation” for those who feel the proverbial ants in their pants. There’s actually a plethora of different types of meditation out there, which is great because everyone responds to different kinds of treatments. In this same study, even children benefited from mindfulness meditation, according to their parents.

    Reach Out
This combination of advice is fantastic, but we should never self-diagnose or suffer in silence: anyone dealing with symptoms should involve a third party and seek medical advice before jumping into a treatment plan.

  • Teleka Patrick Disappears Without A Trace

Teleka Patrick was last seen in the parking lot of the hospital where she worked, Kalamazoo’s Borgess Medical Center, on the night of December 5. Later that night, police found the 30-year-old’s gold 1997 Lexus ES300 in a ditch on westbound I-94 near the Porter/Burns Harbor exit in Indiana.

After failing to show up for work, the next morning, Patrick’s family reported her missing. “(Missing work) is out of character where she is concerned,” her father, Matthias Patrick, told Nancy Grace on Wednesday. “She is always deliberate about what she’s doing.” Patrick had recently purchased a plane ticked so that she could visit her parents in Florida for the holidays. “We were shocked. Disbelief,” her mother, Irene Patrick, said. Family members say that Patrick had received a suspicious phone call, the night before her disappearance, and they have started a Facebook page in hopes of locating Patrick, and bringing her home safely.

Police then took their dogs to Patrick’s abandoned vehicle, in hopes of tracing her scent. Unfortunately, no trace was found. “We have scoured, searched, and looked at everything we could possibly look at — all the exits, all the businesses, all the hotels,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Rick Strong said. “We posted fliers, we talked to neighbors. We did a full-blown on-the-ground search in the wooded area north of where the car was.”

The FBI has posted a detailed description of Patrick, along with details about her disappearance. The statement reads:

Dr. Teleka Patrick, alias Teleka Calderon (age 30), is a medical resident at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Dr. Patrick was last seen on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at approximately 8:00 p.m. (EST). After completing her shift at work, Dr. Patrick unsuccessfully tried to rent a hotel room in downtown Kalamazoo, and then she was dropped off by the hotel shuttle driver in the parking lot at Borgess Medical Center. Dr. Patrick left some of her belongings at work, to include her cell phone.

On that same evening, Thursday, December 5, 2013, at approximately 10:00 p.m. (EST), Dr. Patrick’s vehicle, a light-gold 1997 Lexus ES 300, was found abandonded off the roadway in a ditch with a possible flat tire on I-94, mile marker 23, in Porter, Indiana. Dr. Patrick’s belongings were in the car, to include clothing items, a wallet that contained her driver’s license, credit cards, and a small amount of cash. Dr. Patrick failed to report to her regular shift at work the next day. Dr. Patrick has not been heard from since this time.

If you have any information about Patrick, please contact Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department at 269-383-8748 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.

  • Coffee Poisoning: Doctor Charged With Assault

A Houston doctor is accused of poisoning her lover’s coffee with a chemical found in antifreeze, but claims she’s totally innocent.

Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, an oncologist specializing in breast cancer, allegedly dosed Dr. George Blumenschein’s coffee with the chemical and told him the reason it tasted so sweet was because she’d put Splenda in it. He says she gave him a second cup, and within hours he was in the emergency room with slurred speech, loss of fine motor skills, central nervous system depression, cardiopulmonary complications and renal failure.

Rather than Splenda, it was ethylene glycol, which is also used for medical purposes and is reportedly found quite easily at the hospital the two worked at, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. But Gonzalez-Angulo maintains her innocence.

“She is a distinguished citizen and scientist, and these allegations are totally inconsistent with her personal and professional life,” attorney Derek Hollingsworth said in a statement.

Gonzalez-Angulo has been charged with aggravated assault, but it’s not clear just yet what her motive may have been. She’s free on $50,000 bail; Dr. Blumenschein, meanwhile, has had to undergo dialysis for kidney failure.
