  • Marvel Characters Are Coming To Disney Infinity

Last year, Disney went head to head with Skylanders with Disney Infinity. Like Skylanders, the game requires players to buy physical toys that can then be scanned into the game to complete challenges. So far, the game has only featured characters from Disney’s stable of in-house characters, but it appears the game will soon be getting characters from properties that Disney owns.

In a new trailer for Disney Infinity, Captain America’s shield all but confirms that Marvel characters will be coming to the game this year. It doesn’t hurt that the trailer was also shared by the official Marvel Entertainment YouTube page. While no solid details were offered, it does appear that characters from the Marvel cinematic universe will be joining the game. In other words, you can assume The Avengers will be in the game. As for other Marvel characters, like Spider-Man, it’s a bit more murky. Disney owns the character, but the film rights belong to Sony and the game rights to Activision. It’s unknown if that will have any effect on getting Spider-Man into the game.

Besides the inclusion of Marvel characters, the trailer also makes reference to a 2.0 version of Disney Infinity. We don’t know if this means Disney is working on a sequel or just an update that includes Marvel characters. My money is on the latter as Disney may want to focus on just making new content for the first game instead of releasing a new game every year. The 2.0 status could also refer to Disney Infinity coming out on the PS4 and Xbox One. We won’t know until Disney says more about it though.

As for other Disney properties, like Star Wars, it’s safe to assume that they’ll be showing up in Disney Infinity sooner or later as well. With Star Wars Episode VII now in production, Disney will want to hype the movie all they can with video games, toys and more. With Disney Infinity, they have the perfect opportunity to appeal to fans young and old with a video game and toys in a perfect marriage that Star Wars should have been involved in ages ago.

Unfortunately, the above teaser doesn’t give us a release date for the Marvel characters or the version 2.0 of Disney Infinity. I’d wager we’ll see it sometime during Summer though.

  • Disney Infinity Continues To Impress In Latest Trailer

Disney Infinity Continues To Impress In Latest Trailer

Disney Infinity’s Toy Box mode looks awesome. It’s basically Minecraft with Disney characters, and it lets you build just about anything you can think of. Of course, you can do more than just build things. Players will be able to make their own games.

The latest trailer for Disney Infinity shows off the title’s game creation mode that can be accessed from within the Toy Box. Unlike games like LittleBigPlanet, players are not restricted to any single genre or game type. In just two minutes, it shows that players can create 2D platformers, 3D platformers, racing games, infinite runners and a Pilotwings clone. It looks like the only limitation will be the players’ imagination.

Back in June, I said that Disney Infinity had no right to look as good as it does. I take that back. The game has every right to look amazing, and it’s exciting to see Disney using its legendary IP in such an amazing way. In fact, the only downside is that the game requires players to buy physical toys to unlock more characters and set pieces for Toy Box mode.

Disney Infinity will be available on August 18 for Wii U, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, 3DS and PC.

  • Disney Infinity Has No Right To Look This Cool

Disney Infinity Has No Right To Look This Cool

At first, Disney Infinity seemed like a shameless attempt to copy Activision’s Skylanders franchise. As more information is revealed, however, Disney Infinity seems to have only taken the idea of physical toy tie ins. Everything else is looking pretty amazing.

The latest trailer, which showcases the Toy Box World Creation aspect of Disney Infinity, reeks of Minecraft but in all the right ways. The game allows players to create custom worlds based upon hundreds of Disney worlds and franchises. The kid in me demands I preorder this.

Disney Infinity is probably going to be a huge hit when it launches later this year. Kids love Disney, video games and toys so it just seems like the perfect marriage of elements. It also doesn’t hurt that the game ships with some pretty popular characters – Mr. Incredible, Jack Sparrow and Sully.

Disney Infinity launches August 18 for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U and 3DS.

  • Nintendo Says The Wii U Has Plenty Of Third-Party Support

One of the perceived weaknesses of the Wii U is that it doesn’t have any third-party support. A survey of GDC attendees suggested as much as only 4.6 percent of respondents claimed to be working on Wii U games. Well, Nintendo wants you to know that it has plenty of third-party content.

Nintendo confirmed today that a number of third-party titles will be hitting its newest console starting this month with Injustice: Gods Among Us and continuing through the end of the year with high profile releases from Disney, Ubisoft and others.

“Disney, Ubisoft and our other third-party partners have a great lineup of exclusive games and unique experiences for fans of all ages,” said Steve Singer, Nintendo of America’s vice president of Licensing. “Their creativity spans every audience and genre, creating new ways to play that can only be experienced on Nintendo platforms.”

Disney seems to be throwing all in with Nintendo with the release of a Planes adaptation exclusively for Nintendo consoles. The game will probably not appeal to adults, but Disney’s Cars adaptation for the Wii sold surprisingly well. If Disney’s Planes film is even half as popular, it could see some success on Nintendo platforms as well.

In more exciting news, Disney Infinity will be coming to the Wii U on August 18. For those unfamiliar with the title, Disney Infinity is much like Activision’s Skylanders franchise in that it’s a game where players unlock new characters by buying physical toys. It worked amazingly well for Activision, and Disney’s stable of classic characters should make it a hugely popular game across all platforms.

Despite earning the ire from Wii U fans for its delay of Rayman Legends, Ubisoft still seems committed to Nintendo’s platform. The publisher announced today that Splinter Cell Blacklist will be coming to the Wii U. This one is a legitimate surprise as the publisher said the game would only be coming to the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC at E3 last year.

As for Rayman Legends, Nintendo says the expanded “demo,” including the online challenge mode, will be available in late April. The challenge mode contains four levels, including “Murfy’s Dungeon,” which is exclusive to the Wii U version of the game.

Here’s the other third-party titles confirmed for the Wii U in the coming year:

  • Injustice: Gods Among Us
  • LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
  • Resident Evil: Revelations
  • Fast & Furious
  • Sniper Elite V2
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Directors Cut
  • Ducktales Remastered
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara
  • Mutant Mudds Deluxe
  • Spin the Bottle
  • Scram Kitty and the his Buddy on Rails
  • To be honest, it’s strange to see Nintendo sending out a press release confirming a number of third-party titles when the respective publishers will probably be sending out their own press releases. It seems that the Kyoto-based company wants people to know that the Wii U hasn’t lost on third-party support just yet, and Nintendo is obviously working to secure content from publishers and developers.

Unfortunately, it may not be enough as we move into the next generation of consoles this year. The PS4 and next Xbox will be more powerful than the Wii U, and developers may not want to downscale their titles for Nintendo’s console. If that’s the case, the Wii U may miss out on some of the biggest releases of the next few years.

That being said, most buy a Nintendo console for the first-party games and a handful of exclusive third-party titles that really take advantage of the hardware. That will probably be the case with the Wii U, and honestly, that’s not so bad.

Disney Infinity Officially Announced, Sandbox Gameplay Revealed

Disney today officially revealed the details of its ambitious sandbox gameplay title Disney Infinity. The game, will supposedly allow players to create their own gameplay experience using the characters and props from Disney and Pixar movies. Disney Infinity will launch on video game consoles in June 2013, and on mobile and “online devices” throughout the year.

Disney Infinity introduces a new way to interact with the best of Disney on one game platform, both now and in the future,” said John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive. “With this innovative approach to gaming, Disney Infinity will bring to life new characters, stories and environments from The Walt Disney Company over time in a way that will delight fans and gamers alike.”

The video game will integrate collectible figures that can be placed on an “Infinity base” to unlock new characters and objects in-game. At the game’s launch, 40 “Interactive Pieces” will be available to unlock content and 17 “Interactive Character Figures” will be available to unlock new characters. “Power Discs” will also be available to expand content. Disney will, of course, be releasing new characters and “Play Sets” in the future to expand the content of the game.

The game’s “Toy Box” mode will allow players to create their own environments and challenges, which can then be shared with other players. Also included are “story-driven” adventures in which players will confront puzzles and enemies in familiar Disney settings. The game supports 2 player co-op in the adventures and up to four player co-op in “Toy Box” mode.

Disney Infinity combines prominent Disney and Pixar characters and scenarios in a way that mimics how kids play in real life,” said John Blackburn, vice president and general manager of Avalanche Software. “With our platform’s unique gameplay mechanics and innovative approach to user generated content within the “Toy Box” mode, Disney Infinity will spark imaginations and provide endless hours of fun and creativity.”

The starter pack for Disney Infinity will cost $75. “Disney Infinity Figures” will cost $13 each or $30 for a 3-pack, and “Power Discs” will cost $5. Additional “Play Sets” will cost $35. Three “Play Sets” have already been announced, encompassing the worlds of Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean , and The Incredibles.
