  • Alabama Sheriff Guilty of Beating Door-to-Door Salesman

An Alabama county sheriff has pleaded guilty to beating an unarmed, handcuffed man. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Keith McCray, a criminal investigator at the Macon County, Alabama Sheriff’s Office, admitted to violating the civil rights of the prisoner on Independence Day last year.

McCray has been found guilty of one felony count of deprivation of rights under color of law. He now faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

“While we look to law enforcement to maintain the safety and security of our citizens, their position of authority does not give them the right to act outside the bounds of the law,” said George Beck, Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama. “We trust them to protect and serve our communities. While most members of law enforcement serve honorably, McCray breached this trust and must be held accountable. Failure to do so would discredit the noble service of every other officer, and weaken the public’s trust in those who are sworn to protect them.”

The incident occurred on July 4, 2013 when McCray arrested a door-to-door salesman in Tuskegee, Alabama. McCray then took the man, who had been selling alarm systems, to the Macon County Jail. According to court documents, McCray then struck the salesman four times in the face and head, all while the man was handcuffed and, according to the Justice Department, “posed no threat.”

“The defendant attacked an innocent citizen who was simply trying to earn a living on the day of the incident,” said Jocelyn Samuels, acting assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department. “When he assaulted the defenseless victim, he violated the trust put in him by the community as well as the law. The Department will continue to hold accountable those who abuse their authority.”

  • USC Racial Profiling? Parties Cause Racism Charges

Los Angeles police are no strangers to racial scandal, but now even USC students are claiming the department has racist tendencies.

According to a Fox 11 report on the incident, two parties directly across the street from one another received very different treatment this weekend. One house party was attended by mostly white students, and the other by mostly black. When dozens of police in riot gear showed up, witnesses stated, the white party was told to quiet down while the black party was dispersed. Six people were arrested in the aftermath.

Charges of excessive force and racial bias have been levied against the LAPD and a student protest took place on campus this week. According to the Fox 11 report, the LAPD and USC administrators will be meeting to discuss a possible forum on racial profiling.

  • 12-Year-Old Calls Out Cop For Parking on the Sidewalk [VIDEO]

Now that nearly everyone has video cameras in their pocket, videos of police doing (or failing to do) their jobs has become a staple on YouTube. Some citizens will even go so far as to test police by aggressively asserting their rights on camera, and now it seems that young adults are getting in on the action of holding the police accountable.

A 12-year-old that identifies himself as Jeremy Drew last year approached a Las Vegas police officer to question him about parking on the sidewalk. The video, which was posted in September 2012, now has over 3.1 million YouTube views.

In the video, the officer can be seen returning to his motorcycle with some sort of iced beverage in-hand. Drew asks him if there is some sort of emergency which would justify his parking on the sidewalk, then asks for the officer’s badge number. The officer refuses repeatedly and eventually drives off.

  • Cop Fired 8 Times Faces Arbitration

A Miami-Dade police officer who has been fired eight times from three different police departments may now be facing the end of his law enforcement career.

The Miami Herald is reporting that Opa-locka police Sgt. German Bosque attended an appeals hearing on Wednesday, where an arbitrator heard testimony to determine his fate as a police officer.

According to the Opa-locka police department, Bosque had left his police-issued AR-15 assault rifle with the father of his girlfriend, a violation of a 2008 settlement that allowed him to continue working as a police officer. The department is attempting to fire Bosque for the sixth time.

Bosque, who was fired in October, was defended at the hearing by the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association, which argued that Bosque had left the gun in a locked warehouse that only he and his girlfriend’s father had access to. Bosque is hoping that, once again, he will be reinstated with back pay.

According to the Herald report, Bosque has been accused over the years of beating a handcuffed suspect, beating juveniles, hiding drugs, stealing from suspects, defying orders, lying, falsifying police reports, and calling in sick to take a vacation. He is currently under investigation for the alleged battery of a domestic dispute suspect.
