  • Sony Purchasing Game Make Bungie for $3.6 Billion

Sony Purchasing Game Make Bungie for $3.6 Billion

Less than two weeks after Microsoft announced it was purchasing Activision Blizzard, Sony has announced a deal to purchase Bungie.

Bungie rose to fame as the original makers of Halo. Microsoft quickly swooped in, purchasing the company in 2001. Just a few years later, in 2007, Bungie was spun off as a privately held company. Since becoming independent again, Bungie has continued releasing games, most notably the Destiny franchise.

Bungie will once again be purchased by a larger company, this time Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). The two companies announced the deal, worth some $3.6 billion, on Monday, January 31.

“In SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart,” reads Bungie’s blog post. “Like us, SIE believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.“

Bungie says it will continue to have the same creative freedom it has enjoyed for years.

“We remain in charge of our destiny,” the blog continues. “We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.“

As the video game market heats up, larger companies are snapping up smaller ones that fit in with their plans. The metaverse — the intersection of physical, augmented, and virtual reality — is speeding up this consolidation, with companies seeing game makers as a way to game a foothold.

It should be interesting to see what Bungie will be able to develop with Sony’s deep pockets backing the company.

  • Julianne Hough On Ryan Seacrest and Brooks Laich

Julianne Hough graces the cover of the August issue of Redbook magazine and within its pages she dishes on her split from Ryan Seacrest and her bold move to take a chance on new love. Julianne, who is presently on tour for “Move Live,” her dance extravaganza with brother Derek Hough, says there was more to her split from the American Idol and radio personality than what the media was initially told.

When Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest announced their split back in March of 2013 they cited their crazy schedules as the catalyst for the break up.

“Every relationship, there was nothing wrong or bad, but there was nothing right,” Hough says in the magazine. “I had one foot out because I didn’t want to get hurt. And I didn’t say what was on my mind because I didn’t want to ruffle any feathers. I needed to be perfect.”

Nine months later Julianne started dating hockey player Brooks Laich, and she has a whole new attitude on love.

“But now I’m not holding anything back, because I’d rather get my heart broken than never know what it is to be completely, madly in love,” she says. “If I had been this open in my last relationship, who knows?”

It seems a six-day seminar on destiny–and creating your own–may have contributed to Julianne Hough’s new outlook. The young woman has faced many obstacles in her life. Maybe this seminar helped move her past at least one of them?

“I was not into it at first, but I learned so much about myself and why my relationships didn’t work that by the end I was on a high,” she says. “I was seeing a couple people, but immediately [pretends to text guys], ‘You are nice, but this is going nowhere.’ The next day my ‘Curve’ costar introduced [Brooks and me]. It couldn’t have been a better time. We’ve been open and honest from Day 1.”

Happiness seems to be a way of life now for the former Dancing With the Stars pro. A recent Instagram post is captioned, “Good morning! Let’s be happy today, tomorrow, and for the rest of our lives! 🙂 Have a joyful day everyone! Xoxo” Her outlook is almost contagious.

Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest never seemed to be right for each other. Aside from their age difference there always appeared to be something lacking between them. Julianne has now defined this, learned from her inability to let go, and moved on to a happy, love-filled life. She probably wishes the same for Ryan Seacrest.

For now Julianne is dancing her way into pure, unadulterated happiness–in both her career and her private life, too.

  • PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 to Get Destiny Beta First

Though none of the announcements during last night’s big PlayStation 4 release event were huge revelations, they did all add up to a fairly substantial look at what is coming in the next few months for Sony’s new console.

Apart from the Uncharted tease and the Metal Gear Solid V exclusive mission announcement, Bungie may have had the biggest news of the night. The studio used the PS4 launch to announce that the beta for Destiny will launch first for PlayStation consoles.

The Destiny beta is currently set for an early 2014 release. Players who pre-order Destiny will gain automatic access to the beta when it launches. Though no details of the PlayStation timed exclusivity were revealed, it’s clear that PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 owners will be playing the game a week or a month earlier than Xbox One owners.

In addition to the announcement, Bungie revealed a bit more of Destiny through a new game trailer. The video shows off what appear to be robot enemies, a variety of large landscapes (including the moon), and a special message of congratulations from Bungie to Sony and PlayStation fans:

  • New Destiny Trailer Shows Lunar Gameplay

New Destiny Trailer Shows Lunar Gameplay

For the past few months, developer Bungie has been relatively quiet about its upcoming Halo series follow-up, Destiny. The game was announced back in February, just before Sony’s big PlayStation 4 reveal. Since that time, Bungie fans have gotten a few developer diaries, but not much else.

Today, Bungie has released a new trailer that shows all-new gameplay, a new location, and more enemies. It also reveals a bit more about the story behind Destiny.

Titled “The Moon,” the trailer focuses on Earth’s satellite. It implies that the enemies players will be facing in Destiny came from the moon, where they were lying in wait to attack for centuries. The video shows plenty of gameplay in what appears to be a multiplayer dungeon set in a sprawling facility on the moon. The end even teases a massive boss fight against some type of gigantic alien (lunar?) monstrosity.

  • New Destiny Details Revealed in Developer Video

Not much has been learned about Destiny, developer Bungie’s upcoming mmo open-world shooter, since its gameplay reveal during Sony’s big E3 presentation. A commentary video for the game’s E3 gameplay demo let slip a few details, but nothing on the scale that gamers are looking for with a game as hyped as Destiny.

Today, Bungie has released a new developer video showcasing the world, classes, weapons, matchmaking options, and loot system in Destiny. Some of the more interesting details in the video include the different skins that weapons can have, the different clothing items players can incorporate into their characters, and the different gameplay options (story missions, public events, raids, etc.) players will have at any given moment.

Of particular interest to Bungie fans may be the varied “supers” that characters can wield. These powers include “Golden Gun” damage buffs, “Fist of Havok” AOE power smashes, and “Nova Bomb” energy blasts:

  • Learn More About Destiny From Its Creators

It didn’t clean up the E3 awards like Titanfall did, but Bungie’s Destiny is still a game to keep your eye on. It’s an incredibly ambitious title that combines the storytelling of a title like Halo with the MMO shooter gameplay of a game like Defiance.

At E3 2013, we finally got to see a pretty big chunk of gameplay from Destiny. At the time, the gameplay was only able to speak for itself though. Now the team at Bungie have released a new trailer that shows that E3 demo with commentary. It’s an interesting new look at the game, and who knows, you may even learn something new about it.

Destiny will be released in 2014 on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

  • Bungie’s Destiny Gets A New CG Trailer, Still No Gameplay

At the February PS4 conference, Bungie announced that Destiny would be coming to the PS4 and PS3. Now the developer has announced that it will be bringing the game to Sony’s E3 press conference with a new trailer.

The trailer doesn’t really tell us much about the game, but it does have that cinematic flair that made Halo such a groundbreaking game when it launched on the original Xbox. If the actual game can pull this off, Destiny may just be a keeper.

We still don’t have any gameplay, but Bungie announced in the above trailer that that the gameplay will finally be shown off at Sony’s E3 press conference on June 10. It’s a pretty big win for Sony when you consider that Bungie was owned by Microsoft just a few years ago.

Beyond the Sony presser, expect a lot more Destiny news at E3. Besides Call of Duty Ghosts, this is Activision’s other big game for 2013. There’s a lot of expectation riding on it so Bungie has to get it right, and I have no reason to doubt them yet.

  • Halo Creators Unveil Their New Game, Destiny

When Bungie abandoned the Halo franchise, gamers worried that the future of the series would be in jeopardy. Luckily, Halo landed in the capable hands of 343 studios, and the legend of Master Chief will continue for years to come.

What could possibly entice Bungie into giving up Halo, its baby and one of the most successful game series ever? This week the studio finally revealed what it has been working on for these past few years.

Destiny is the next title from the studio, which released a short video documentary filled with concept art, story teasers, and a very few second-long snippets of gameplay.

Destiny will be a first-person shooter and feature science fiction elements such as space ships, aliens, and future technology. It will take place on a post-apocalyptic Earth in which humans live in one city that was saved and is protected by a giant sphere called “The Traveler.”

Though the world-building stuff sounds similar to Halo, the gameplay will not put characters into the shoes of “The One.” Players will instead take on the role of a guardian of the human city. Three different character classes are available, the Titan, the Hunter, and the Warlock. Warlocks will use “magic” derived from the power of The Traveler.

The game will be always-online and feature multiplayer gameplay that shares qualities with MMO gaming and Borderlands-style co-op. Players will group up to take on dungeons such as derelict space ships and moon bases. Bungie expects players to be playing Destiny, or its sequels or updates, for at least the next ten years.

  • Bungie to Reveal Destiny on February 17

Bungie to Reveal Destiny on February 17

Ever since Halo Reach was released in 2010, fans of developer Bungie have been waiting patiently for the next major release from the company. Today, Bungie has finally begun to talk about its new project, Destiny.

From the announcement at Bungie’s website:

In a matter of days, we’re going to give you your first glimpse into the vision and ambition that’s driving the creation of our brave new world. To make room for the resulting chatter, we’ve launched some official social media channels.

According to the new social feeds created for the game, the big reveal for Destiny will take place on February 17. The game now has Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ pages for fans to follow, and all of them contain the following message:

In addition, a new Destiny sub-forum has now appeared on the Bungie forums. Currently, members of the forum are deciphering a Destiny-related alternate reality game (ARG) that Bungie began this week.

Details on Destiny are sparse at this point, but leaked images last year teased that the game will be an ambitious science fiction game with spaceships.
