Dental Coma After Woman Has Teeth Pulled

A mother in Hawaii is in a coma following an appointment to have her wisdom teeth taken out.

The New York Daily News reports that Kristen Tavares, 23, of Hilo, Hawaii, went into cardiac arrest during surgery by Dr. John Stover, her dentist. They also report that Dr. Stover has had 4 complaints filed against him since 2010 for other dental and medical violations.

According to Tavares’ boyfriend, Chauncey Prudencio, she was in the middle of the procedure to have her wisdom teeth removed when she went into cardiac arrest. The team on site used a defibrillator to restart her heart, and she was flown to a hospital. She is still in a coma and on a breathing machine. Her brain is swollen and her heart is too weak for any other medical procedures.

Tavares and Prudencio have two children together, the youngest of which is only 3 months old.

Two of the complaints that had been filed against Dr. Stover in the past have ended up being dismissed for lack of evidence. The other two are recent enough to still be pending investigation.

Stover did have the proper permits to use full anesthesia in his practice.

There are two common reasons why something like this might happen. A patient is lying on his back during such a procedure. There is always the possibility that a tooth or other piece of material, such as gauze, might fall into the patient’s airway and block it.

Another has to do with the procedures of and before anesthesia is administered. There is a certain amount of time that anesthesiologists will wait after a person has eaten before administering anesthesia. A patient could vomit up stomach contents and end up with fluid in their airway or lungs.

The Portland Press Herald reported a mysterious death of a local teen whose condition deteriorated after he had oral surgery. Even in such a case as that, the frequency of death due to surgical complications is very low. Any complications, such as allergic reactions to medications, only occur in 2 or 3 out of every 100,000 cases.

  • Jolly Rancher Takes Out NFL Player

Jolly Rancher Takes Out NFL Player

Personal confession: Around mile 19 of the 2010 Georgia Marathon, I accepted a Jolly Rancher from a roadside spectator, and, breathing very hard (as one at mile 19 is wont to do), nearly choked to death on the sweet taste of sour apple. So I know the dangers of the finest of hard candies.

So, apparently, does Dallas Cowboys safety Barry Church. The fourth-year professional football player recently missed a practice due to a Jolly Rancher-related catastrophe. Yes, the 6’2”, 218 lb. athlete whose job it is to knock other similarly proportioned men down was taken out by a cherry Jolly Rancher, which apparently chipped a tooth and sent him to the dentist for an emergency root canal.

The procedure has caused Church to miss a full day of training camp practice, as well as a team walkthrough. It could be worse, though. Apparently hard candy remains the top choking hazard (at least for kids).

Still, it’s not quite as problematic as the Achilles tendon tear that knocked him out for 13 weeks last season. Given that the “injury” isn’t quite a career ender, Twitter-equipped players, writers, and sundry hangers-on have felt comfortable laying in:

And now, without further ado: Yeah, Jolly Ranchers are good, but are they really werther it?

  • One More Day to Get Plants vs. Zombies For Free

Last month, PopCap Games, the makers of Plants vs. Zombies, teamed up with the American Dental Association to “stop zombie mouth.” The campaign distributed over 1 million Plants vs. Zombies trading cards and educated kids on the importance of dental hygiene. Along with the trading cards, PopCap was giving away copies of Plants vs. Zombies for free with a redeemable coupon code.

Evidently, giving away one of the most popular tower defense games of the past few years proved a success. Over 250,000 copies of the game were distributed, and PopCap has announced it is extending the deadline to redeem the coupon codes to November 13.

“The Stop Zombie campaign was a tremendous success using a unique platform to improve the oral health literacy of entire families,” said Dr. Jonathan Shenkin, ADA spokesperson on pediatric dentistry. “The American Dental Association looks forward to future innovative collaborations that enable us to realize the goal of reducing oral health disparities.”

The goal of the campaign was for adults to print out the coupons and give them out instead of candy on Halloween. As bad as that decision sounds, a PopCap survey shows that 93% of kids would take a free video game over candy on Halloween night. Of course, survey also shows that 89% of kids would still like Halloween if it were less about candy and more about “other types of fun.” Someone should explain to kids that other types of Halloween fun are for grownups, and that they should gorge on free candy play Plants vs. Zombies and brush their teeth while they can.

  • PopCap Gives Away Plants vs. Zombies For Oral Health

PopCap games and the American Dental Association (ADA) this weekend announced that dentists across the U.S. will be handing out packs of Plants vs. Zombies trading cards featuring characters from the game. Each card pack also includes a coupon redeemable for a free copy of the PC/Mac edition of Plants vs. Zombies.

The giveaway is part of the “Stop Zombie Mouth” campaign that PopCap and the ADA announced last month. The redeemable coupons found in the card packs are also freely available at the campaign’s website. The purpose of the campaign, which lasts through Halloween, is to spread awareness of oral health at a time of year when candy is sold in bulk. The website states that PopCap and the ADA are “redefining what a Halloween ‘treat’ can be…by giving FUN instead of candy.”

“Changing eating habits among children is one of the most important yet difficult challenges that parents face today,” said Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest and a supporter of the campaign. “The ADA and PopCap Games have come up with a fun, clever, and compelling approach that should appeal to young trick-or-treaters this Halloween. This campaign will help children recognize the relationship between healthy eating and healthy teeth, and provide one of the coolest alternatives to sugary snacks yet.”

The limited edition trading card packs to be handed out by dentists will have 5 cards each. The cards will feature 45 different zombie types, including 5 new characters that represent mouth germs. A campaign music video, seen below, was also released featuring the lyrical stylings of those mouth germs. The video is about two minutes long, and can be used as a timer when brushing teeth, according to PopCap and the ADA.

  • Dentist Removes Ex-Boyfriend’s Teeth? Not Hardly

Last week, yours truly penned a little article about a poor Polish chap who had all of his teeth surgically removed by his vengeful ex-girlfriend. The story proved to be quite popular, capturing the imagination of people all over the world who have often dreamed of performing unspeakable acts upon their ex-boyfriends and/or ex-girlfriends. Although the story was kind of sad, the ridiculous nature of the scenario left plenty of room for a chuckle or two at the guy’s expense.

Turns out, the whole bloody affair was nothing more than a hoax.

If you missed the piece, let’s play catch-up: A man, who recently parted ways with his dentist girlfriend, decided to pay the lass a visit so she could address his tooth ache. Instead of addressing the problem, the woman doped him up, yanked every single one of his teeth, and sent him on his way. To make matters worse, his current girlfriend, horrified by his embarrassingly empty mouth, decided to leave him. It was sad and funny at the same time.

Erin Tennant at MSNBC decided to look a bit deeper into the case, and what she found was quite revealing. Neither the Polish police department nor Poland’s Chamber of Physicians and Dentists are investigating such a case, indicating that nothing of the sort ever took place.

After some digging around, the tale was finally traced back to the online edition of Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper. However, writer Simon Tomlinson, whose byline appears on the article, claims that he doesn’t know where the story came from. Odd, that.

“I’ve drawn a bit of a blank,” he stated in an email. “The (Daily) Mail Foreign Service, which did the piece for the paper, is really just an umbrella term for copy put together from agencies. My news desk isn’t sure where exactly it came from.”

That’s pretty peculiar. Given that the piece is only a week old, you’d think it would be fresh in his mind. Is Tomlinson simply trying to ignore the problem until it goes away? Possibly. Then again, this whole situation has been pretty bizarre, so it’s anybody’s guess if he’s telling the truth or not.

I, for one, am a little disappointed that the story is a hoax. It’s not that I enjoy having a laugh or two at the expense of others — well, that’s not entirely true — but the idea of someone getting a little revenge on the person who wronged them is kind of amusing. In a sick and twisted way, of course. It’s the sort of story we can share with others so everyone and their grandmother can enjoy the article’s inherent outrageousness. If nothing else, it’s reinforces the old adage that we shouldn’t always believe what we read, especially on the Internet.

  • Dentist Removes Ex’s Teeth: Twitter Reacts

Dentist removes ex’s teeth isn’t the sort of headline you read everyday, so excuse me if I find derive some demented glee from this sick little story.

Here’s some solid advice: If your significant other is a medical professional, you might want to consider treating them right. If, for some reason, the two of you decide to split, it might be in your best interest not to use their services should the need arise. Unless, of course, you don’t mind losing pieces of your body in the process.

Such is the case of poor Marek Olszewski, a 45 year-old Polish man who decided to let Anna Mackowiak, his ex-girlfriend, address his increasingly painful tooth ache. Although the two had recently parted ways, he felt he could trust the dentist to maintain some sort of professionalism during the procedure. Big mistake. Instead of assisting Olszewski with his condition, Mackowiak pumped him full of anesthetic and removed every single tooth in his head.

Afterwards, Mackowiak wrapped her ex-boyfriend’s jaw in bandages to hide her work from Olszewski, who didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary until he returned home. His new girlfriend, horrified by his sudden lack of chompers, decided she couldn’t date someone without any teeth. In short, Olszewski is now alone and toothless, though he does intend to get implants as soon as possible. That whole paragraph is beyond sad.

His ex-girlfriend is currently being investigated for medical malpractice. She could face up to three years in jail if found guilty of the charges.
