Microsoft Repairing Surface Devices With Spontaneous Screen Cracks

Microsoft has announced it is repairing defective Surface Laptop 3 devices whose screens appear to spontaneously crack.

Some Surface customers have been reporting for months that their device screens have been cracking, in some cases without the users doing anything. In at least one case, the crack appeared after spending the night sitting on the desk charging.

It appears that Microsoft is finally addressing the issue, offering to repair the affected devices free of charge, according to a post on the company’s support site:

    Hi everyone,

We have investigated claims of screen cracking on Surface Laptop 3 and have determined that, in a very small percentage of cases, a hard foreign particle may cause a hairline fracture in the glass that may seem to appear unexpectedly or without visible cause.

If you believe your Surface Laptop 3 is experiencing this issue, you are encouraged to contact our customer support team to initiate a repair free of charge during the warranty period of the device. If you have previously paid Microsoft for a Surface Laptop 3 repair that you believe experienced this issue, please contact customer support to learn about reimbursement.

This is a big miss for the company, and represents a quality issue that should never have made it through production. Fortunately, impacted users won’t have to pay for the fix.

  • Xbox One Disc Drive Issues Not Affecting A Lot Of Users, Says Microsoft

On November 22, the Xbox One launched across 13 markets and sold more than one million units in a day. In short, it was a good day at Microsoft. That good day did have a small blemish on it, however, thanks to a small number of defective units.

On Friday, reports started to emerge that some Xbox One units had broken disc drives. Videos began popping up on YouTube of Xbox One owners popping in a disc only to hear a guttural grind that sounded like it came from the bowels of a demon. It wasn’t pretty, but it was assumed that only a small number of consoles were affected. According to Microsoft, that is indeed the case.

Speaking to the BBC, Microsoft says that the broken disc drives are “affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers.” The company wouldn’t give a rough estimation of how many consoles it thinks were affected, but it says that it’s “working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange program.”

There are always a few duds at any console launch. So, why do these issues seem more pronounced than the launch woes that affected previous console generations? IDC analyst Spencer Izard told the BBC that social media will make mountains out of anthills for this console generation:

“Overall, I do not believe we will see significant manufacturing problems with either the Microsoft or Sony console but due to social media the relatively few that do occur will become more apparent to those looking to purchase over this holiday season.”

In short, the majority of consoles from both Sony and Microsoft will be fine. People are just letting a few YouTube videos and tweets inform their opinions and biases. Even if you do end up with a broken console, it looks like Sony, Microsoft and retailers are doing everything they can to get those affected set up with new consoles.

  • Online Video Captures Assad Man Defecting

Abdo Husameddine, Syria’s Deputy Oil Minister, announced his defection in an online video. Husameddine is the highest ranking official to leave President Bashar Assad’s regime since the country’s uprising last year. The Deputy Oil Minister explained he was defecting due to the brutal crackdown on dissent which has claimed thousands of Syrians’ lives in the past year.

Husameddine identified himself as an “assistant” to the Oil Minister and a member of the ruling Baath Party in the video that was posted on YouTube. In the video, he is shown reading a paper, wearing a suit and tie and sitting on a sofa at an undisclosed location and he says, “I, Abdo Husameddine, Deputy Oil and Mineral Resources Minister, announce my defection from the regime and resignation from my post and declare that I am joining dignified people’s revolution.”

The defecting official continues, “You have inflicted on those you claim are your people a full year of sorrow and sadness, denied them their basic rights to life and humanity and pushed the country to the edge of the abyss. I do not want to end my life servicing the crimes of this regime.” Husameddine has served for the regime for over 33 years in a variety of government positions. In the YouTube video, Husameddine said he was defecting, “knowing full well that this regime will burn my home, persecute my family and make up a lot of lies. I advise my colleagues to abandon this sinking ship.”
