  • Albino Buck: 11-Year-Old Kills Rare Deer

How often is it that an 11-year-old hunter kills a 12-point albino buck, or a 12-point buck at all for that matter?

Not often. However, that is exactly what one Oceola Township, Michigan boy did while was hunting with his father earlier this month.

Gavin Dingman and his father Mick Dingman were on a hunting trip when Gavin shot and killed the rare deer with his crossbow on.

The albino deer was known among the families in the town and several other hunters were on the look out for it. Lucky for Gavin, it was his turn to hunt with his father and he got to it before the other guys.

“The whole neighborhood is familiar with it. Quite a few of the guys in the neighborhood were trying to get it,” Mick Dingman told USA Today.

Gavin took a photo with his prized kill and it has since gone viral. Of course there has been mixed emotions over the photo with some animal rights activists upset that the animal was killed and others congratulating him for his harvest.

“He kind of feels like a rock star right now. Everyone is calling, all of the hunting shows and hunting magazines,” Mick said.

Gavin admits that he was nervous about taking the shot, even though this wasn’t his first deer.

“My dad was just like, ‘Take a deep breath. Are you sure you can take the shot? If you’re not 100 percent, we don’t want to injure it’… I double-lunged it,” Gavin recalled of his 30-yard shot.

To celebrate, Mick plans on having the deer placed in a full-body. “It’s too rare and too pretty not to spend the extra money and have the whole thing done,” Mick said.

  • UFO Sightings: Nothing To Fear, “Deer”

UFO Sightings: Nothing To Fear, “Deer”

Are Martians meandering through Mississippi marsh and grasslands?

Since a family in Jackson County, Mississippi witnessed something out of the ordinary, the Internet’s interest has been piqued. Edith and Rainer Shattles claimed they had set up cameras to capture wildlife on Feb 16, but instead reported filming a strange sequence of glowing objects. In the time lapse, Bambi & Co. go from grazing in the dark to gazing into what look like floating headlights. At another, it looks like they’re basking in a large spotlight hovering above

“We didn’t know what it was. I was looking for a nice buck to be showing up on the trail camera actually,” Edith explained.

Rainer Shattles added, “Whether it’s a government drone or what, I wish if nothing else, if one of them would step up and say ‘Ya, that’s ours.’”

Mr. Shattles may be onto something there. The isolated region would make a perfect location for military training exercises to take place.

If you’re an ardent X-Filer, yes – the truth is out there. It may even be something fantastically unexpected and alien. However, it’s always nice to try the simple explanations on for size first – just in case they fit.

Of the 500 monthly UFO sightings reported in America, the mysterious phenomena end up mostly bearing mundane everyday explanations. According to the Huffington Post, a Kansas City sighting from a few years back was actually a military parachuting team performing a nighttime jump.

There was even something called Project Blue Book study performed by the U.S. Air Force between 1948 and 1969. After looking at 12,000 UFO sightings, it was learned that 11,917 of them had equally boring explanations like satellites, weather balloons, natural phenomena, or hoaxes. After 1969, Blue Book wasn’t carried any further (although I like to think that was just the juncture at which it became covert, with Agent Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones saving Earth daily in thankless secrecy).

So, of the kajillion explanations it could be – what do you think this family captured? Drones? A military training exercise? Deer eyeball reflections? A grandkid with excellent photoshop skills? Keep in mind that whatever the lights were, they didn’t seem to rattle the Shattle’s deer enough to stop their grass gobbling. What are my two cents? Well, using the wealth of information I obtained while earning a Biological Sciences degree, I’ve deduced the following:

It’s definitely Santa trolling Southern tail for his team during their off season.

  • Eagle Attacking Deer Caught On Camera

Nature strikes again. In Russia, a camera was placed in the wild to take snaps of untainted nature. Though the camera was originally intended to capture pictures of tigers, another unusual predator was captured instead. The camera took a series of images depicting a golden eagle attacking a young sika deer.

Linda Kerley of the Zoological Society of London and Jonathan Slaght of the Wildlife Conservation Society had hoped to see a rare glimpse into the daily habits of Siberian tigers when the camera caught the adult golden eagle attacking the young deer. In December of 2011, the camera took the series of images, which included three pictures during the span of just 2 seconds. Full size adult golden eagles can weigh up to 14 pounds; however, the baby deer was estimated to be somewhere in the range of 90 to 100 pounds. Though smaller in bodily frame, the eagles have powerful talons and beaks, which make them formidable predators.

The following video includes stills from the golden eagle’s attack.

Two weeks after the attack, Linda Kerley went to check on the equipment and monitor the camera. She noticed that the carcass of the deer, that was partially skeletal, had dropped in the exact same place of the attack. The placement and remains of the deer led researchers to assume that other carnivores had traveled in the vicinity. The following image shows the remains of the deer’s leg.

The researchers have stated that golden eagles do not typically attack deer, and there is no reason to suspect that the overall deer population will suffer from such attacks. However, there is no doubt that eagles are predators. Various types of eagles have been known to not only attack deer, but other land-dwelling creatures as well with some of these mammals being predators themselves. Other animal victims have included wolves, foxes, bears, and mountain goats to name a few. The following video shows pictures of some of the other types of attacks in nature that people have captured eagles attacking.

  • Pudu Deer: World’s Smallest Deer Born In New York

A tiny baby Southern pudu deer has been born at the Queens Zoo, and a photo of her has gone viral due to her extreme cuteness.

The doe–whose name hasn’t been announced yet–weighed just one pound when she was born last month to mom Josephine and dad Hamilton and will only grow to be about 20 pounds and a foot tall. The species originates in Argentina and Chile, and they have been known to bark when they sense danger to alert others. They’re also good climbers.

The baby is doing well in her new environment and will flourish under the care of the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the zoo.

“She’s adjusting really well,” said Barbara Russo, a spokeswoman for the Wildlife Conservation Society. “She’s very cute and still nursing. She will eventually transition to solid foods.”

It’s a good year for babies at zoos across the country; earlier this month it was announced that Lun-Lun, a giant panda living at Zoo Atlanta, is pregnant with her fourth cub. It will be the first giant panda cub born this year in the U.S. and is expected to arrive later this month.

Bus Hits Deer, Which Then Runs Around Interior Like A Maniac

A video of a bus crash with a deer is gaining some viral steam. According to the video’s description, the white-tailed deer crashed through the CamTran bus on Tuesday evening. It shows the deer crash through the windshield, then flail and run around like a maniac.

Eventually, though we don’t see it in the video, the driver reportedly let the deer out of the bus through the door, and it went back out into the wild. The incident reportedly happened in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

  • Donna the Deer Lady Learns What Deer Crossing Signs Are For

DJ’s who take calls on the radio know that there are a lot of misinformed people in the world. Most of the time, the crazy ranting consists of childish political screeds or conspiracy theories, but every once in a while a truly memorable call comes along.

Enter Donna the Deer Lady. The morning show hosts of Fargo, North Dakota’s Y94 radio station were left gobsmacked when a woman called in to complain about deer crossing signs on the highway. The woman seems to think that deer look for deer crossing signs when attempting to cross the road.

“My frustration is that Minessota and North Dakota departments of transportation would allow these deer crossings to be in such high-traffic areas,” said Donna. “I mean, I’ve even seen them on the interstates. Why are we encouraging deer to cross at the interstate? I don’t get it…”

The DJ then explains to her what most of us realized when we were children – that Deer crossing signs are warnings for people, not signals for deer. The woman then decides to double-down on her argument, stating that deer crossing signs are placed to let deer know where to cross roads. She states that the signs should be moved to roads with less traffic.

The way I see it, there are three possibilities here. The first is that Donna is simply a bit slow, and she truly believed what she was saying. The second is that Donna was under the influence of some type of mind-altering substance at the time of the call, and wasn’t thinking about things clearly. The third is that Donna is an expert troll wasting her powers trolling a Fargo radio station.

It turns out that the first possibility is probably the correct one. Y94 conducted a follow-up interview with Donna in which she states she feels “incredibly stupid” now. She now realizes the true purpose of deer crossing signs, and blamed her ignorance on the fact that she had never actually thought about the purpose of the signs.
