Gal Gadot Didn’t Want Wonder Woman To Be “Too Perfect”

Gal Gadot is about to make Wonder Woman’s debut into the DC world in the upcoming Batman v Superman and she admittedly had some serious shoes to fill.

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman is just as tough and formidable as Lynda Carter’s, but there will be a few adjustments.

But, Gal Gadot was able to bring a little bit of her own modern touch to Wonder Woman.

She said, “I think mainly Zack had a very clear idea of the Wonder Woman he wanted to bring to the big screen, and I had to embody everything he wanted me to be, give my own notes, my own input, and just go for it.”

She continued, “For me, Wonder Woman is just such an amazing character. She’s all about love and justice and truth and compassion and equality, and I didn’t want her to be too polished. I didn’t want her to be too perfect.”

She added, “I wanted people, men and women, to be inspired by her and to be able to relate to her, and I wanted to make her muddier, dirtier, to give her some edge, give her some attitude, and I think we were able to do it.”

  • Margot Robbie Steals The Show In Trailer For “Suicide Squad”

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn couldn’t possibly be more perfect.

In the new trailer for Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie is shown having a conversation with voices in her head and breaking a shop window to grab a purse she likes.

After Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn breaks the window, she sums up the movie, saying, “We’re bad guys. It’s what we do.”

Margot Robbie is amazing as Harley Quinn, who is a former psychiatrist who went crazy when she treated The Joker and is now his girlfriend.

Besides Margot Robbie’s amazing turn as Harley Quinn, Suicide Squad also stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as The Joker, Cara Delevingne as The Enchantress and many other big stars.

Margot Robbie said recently of Harley Quinn, “Harley is creepy, violent, crazy–all of the things that I aspire to be. It’s the fun of living vicariously through someone who is doing things that I would never do in real life.”

You know what they say about the crazy ones. #SuicideSquad

Margot Robbie also talked about how excited she was to work with Will Smith again after their success with Focus.

She said, “I enjoyed working with Will so, so much that I was overjoyed when I heard that we would be working together again. I actually texted him when I heard he was in negotiations to be in Suicide Squad and kept peer-pressuring him, ‘You’d better be taking this movie!’”

  • Uber Driver Accused of Sexual Assault in DC

Uber Driver Accused of Sexual Assault in DC

Despite implementing a ‘safe rides fee’ earlier this year, stories about Uber passengers experiencing anything but safe rides continue to pop up.

The latest comes from Washington DC, where a 32-year-old Uber driver has been charged with second degree sexual abuse after a passenger claimed that he molested her in the back of his car this past Sunday.

    From Washington City Paper:

In the affadavit, the woman says she passed out in the cab and that when she woke, the driver was rubbing her breasts. She then fell back asleep, according to court documents, and woke up again to the sound of car doors locking. The cab had stopped and the driver was feeling her breasts and pulling down her underwear down to her knees. She says she asked the driver to be let out of the vehicle, but he refused and at one point asked if he could go back to her hotel with her. In a follow-up interview with authorities, she said Chakari briefly penetrated her with his finger or another thin object.

Luckily, the woman somehow managed to send out a couple of texts to a friend (who had called the ride for her on his account). He was able to contact the driver, which appears to have ended the attack.

Uber says the driver has been suspended and they are cooperating fully with the investigation.

This isn’t the first case of driver impropriety that’s hit Uber recently. In July, an Uber driver took riders on a high-speed chase, again in DC. Then in June, an Uber driver reportedly kidnapped a drunk woman and took her to a motel, where he slept with her in the room and “fondled her over her clothes and suggested he wanted to have sex, but didn’t force it.” Another Uber driver was accused of rape in Washington DC, but that case has since been dropped. In February, a woman claimed she was briefly kidnapped by an Uber driver over a fare dispute.

Rides-sharing, on-demand car services – or whatever you want to call them – have a lot of potential and are clearly not going anywhere in the foreseeable future. But safety is a huge concern – especially for the most high-profile company in this field. Every time an Uber passenger is sexually assaulted, taken on a cop-evading joyride, or simply made to feel uncomfortable, we all should ask ourselves – exactly who’s car are we getting into?

Uber, like Lyft and similar services, assure us that safety is of the utmost priority. But things like this keep happening. And for those who have fell victim to a predatory or off-their-rocker driver, best intentions aren’t really enough when it comes to safety.

Then again, it’s not like this kind of thing is limited to Uber. Regular old taxi drivers don’t exactly have a clean sheet in this department. I think the emphasis on companies like Uber springs from the fact that Uber’s whole schtick is that it’s a cut above taking a Taxi. Time to put up or shut up, I’d say.

  • Uber Driver Takes Riders on High-Speed Chase in DC

Uber Driver Takes Riders on High-Speed Chase in DC

A New Yorker says he was kidnapped by an Uber driver in Washington DC and taken on a high-speed chase.

The D.C. Taxicab Commission has confirmed an incident did occur and they are investigating. Official details aren’t yet available, but according to frequent Uber user Ryan Simonetti it was one hell of a wild ride.

According to Simonetti, he and two colleagues called an Uber ride around 1:15. When the car arrived and they made their way to it, he noticed that a DC taxi inspector was talking to the Uber driver. They got in anyway.

Before they knew it, the Uber driver had taken off and the taxi inspector was following close behind, lights on.

According to Simonetti, the driver then began to speed and run red lights. He sideswiped cars. The driver apparently claimed that the taxi inspector “wasn’t a real cop” and that if he stopped, he’d be leveled with a $2,000 fine.

The ride lasted around 10 minutes, until the taxi inspector was somehow able to block the Uber driver’s path on an off-ramp. This gave Simonetti time to jump out of the car before the driver turned around and drove the wrong way down the ramp.

“It was like an episode of ‘Cops,’” Simonetti said.

Uber was quick to respond to Simonetti’s tweet for help, so there’s that.

The ride-sharing company has also issued a statement:

Uber became aware of a potential incident involving an UberBLACK trip in Washington, DC [Tuesday] afternoon. Rider safety is our #1 priority. We will cooperate with authorities in their investigation and have deactivated the driver pending the outcome.

This isn’t the first case of driver impropriety that’s put Uber on the defensive. In June, an Uber driver reportedly kidnapped a drunk woman and took her to a motel, where he slept with her in the room and “fondled her over her clothes and suggested he wanted to have sex, but didn’t force it.” Another Uber driver was accused of rape in Washington DC, but that case has since been dropped. In February, a woman claimed she was briefly kidnapped by an Uber driver over fare.

And then there’s the wrongful death lawsuit that Uber currently finds itself embroiled in.

All of these incidents, as they pile up, are leading people to ask just who the hell is driving me around when I use Uber or Lyft, or a similar on-demand car service?

Everything turned out ok for Simonetti and crew, as law enforcement is now on the case.

  • DC MOBA ‘Infinite Crisis’ Now in Open Beta

DC MOBA ‘Infinite Crisis’ Now in Open Beta

League of Legends and DOTA 2 have pioneered the MOBA genre and quickly become some of the most-played multiplayer games of all time. Seeing this success, publishers other than Riot and Valve are seeing dollar signs and throwing out their own MOBA attempts, with limited success.

Warner Bros. today announced that Infinite Crisis is now in open beta. Players can sign up for the beta at the Infinite Crisis website and jump into the game.

Infinite Crisis is a free-to-play MOBA for PC based on the characters and settings from the DC Comics universe. As in other MOBAs players can chose from a large line-up of of DC heroes and villains including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and more. Green Arrow, Aquaman, and Mecha Superman have been added just as the open beta is beginning. Players will team up and take their character onto laned maps and battle henchmen before coming to blows with other heroes.

Most of the characters now featured in the game are previewed in the new open beta launch trailer that Warner Bros. released today. No gameplay is seen in the video, which looks like it could actually double for an Injustice: Gods Among Us preview:

While comic superheroes do seem to be the perfect fit for MOBA characters, it remains to be seen whether the DC brand alone can break Warner Bros. into the MOBA market. The publisher is coming off the console-centric MOBA Guardians of Middle-Earth, which failed to create an audience for the genre on consoles.

  • Marion Barry: Former D.C. Mayor Released From Hospital

Marion Barry, the former mayor of the District of Columbia and councilman since 2005, has been released from a physical rehabilitation facility where he spent 16 days regaining his mobility and receiving treatment for blood and urinary tract infections resulting from diabetes. The councilman has had two other hospitalizations this year; his most recent stay was in the Medstar National Rehabilitation Network.

He was released on Wednesday, a day before his 78th birthday. Before he was discharged, he jokingly said to reporters, “I’m the most popular elected official in the city.” He was certainly in good spirits, and he said that he is determined to serve out the remainder of his term as councilman, which expires in 2016.

He stated that his health condition was not as severe as some had made it out to be. However, he will be putting his health “at the top of the agenda,” and taking more time to care for himself.

Barry admits he had been preoccupied with taking care of everyone else and helping others that he had neglected to look after his own health. He represents Ward 8 on the D.C. Council, and is now on his third consecutive term. The area has been known to be the city’s most impoverished.

The former mayor is gearing himself up for weeks of physical therapy, but he is up to the challenge. He also mentioned that he had managed to climb a flight of stairs successfully, and that he is a fighter. “I guess God gave me a certain amount of courage,” he said.

In 2009, Barry was hospitalized for kidney failure and he underwent an organ transplant. Aside from having diabetes, he is a prostate cancer survivor. He is a controversial figure, being known for his alcohol addiction and drug abuse, among other scandals. He had also been arrested in 1990 for cocaine use during his third term as mayor, and was sentenced to six months in prison.

  • Jesse Eisenberg Cast as Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman

After the reveal that Ben Affleck will play Batman in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie, it would seem that casting for the movie couldn’t get any stranger. That assumption has now been proven wrong.

Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that Jesse Eisenberg of Zombieland and The Social Network fame has been cast as Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman.

“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,” said Zack Snyder, director of Batman vs. Superman. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

Joining Eisenberg will be Jeremy Irons, who will have the heroic task of following Michael Caine as Wayne Manor butler Alfred.

“As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure,” said Snyder. “He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Gal Gadot has already been revealed to be playing Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman and characters from last year’s Man of Steel will also be returning. Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane will reprise their roles in the DC Comics universe, as will Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Batman vs. Superman was recently delayed one year. Though the movie was previously scheduled for a summer 2015 release it will now kick off the 2016 summer blockbuster season on May 9, 2016. According to today’s announcement, the movie is currently being Chris Terrio, the man who wrote the screenplay for Ben Affleck’s Argo.

  • Olga Kurylenko Rumored as New Wonder Woman

Ask any film buff to list some female movie stars who have played Bond Girls, and one would probably be surprised at the list of names people could produce. However, if anyone spouted the name of the Bond Girl in Quantum of Solace, the world would be surprised.

Despite not being a household name, Olga Kurylenko has starred in several well-known and well-received movies in her brief acting career: Paris, Je’Taime, Hitman, Max Payne, Quantum of Solace, Centurion, To the Wonder, Seven Psychopaths, and Oblivion. Now, the 33 year-old actress is rumored to be testing for the role of Wonder Woman.

According to SchmoesKnow.com insider, The Phantom, Kurylenko is one of the front-runners to become the next Wonder Woman on the big screen. The rumor mill concerning the involvement of Wonder Woman in Zachary Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman started earlier this month when it was reported that Thor 2: The Dark World’s Lady Sif, Jaimie Alexander, was in talks with Warner Bros.:

    (image)

Alexander had also recently spoken publicly about her desire to see Wonder Woman return to the big screen, although her endorsement came with certain reservations:

“You know, let’s talk about this for a second: you’ve got very few female superheroes that are dominating films these days, unless they’re in a skintight outfit and their boobs are pushed up to their chin. And it’s not OK. It’s not. There needs to be a positive role model. If you’re going to make Wonder Woman, make it like The Bourne Supremacy. You know, let’s do something awesome like that. Alias was a fantastic show. Why can’t we do that? Why does she have to be in hot pants and spandex and all this stuff? And yeah, I get it, it’s visually stunning for…half of people. But at least make her grow a pair. All she does is eat ice cream while she’s crying over a boy. I know it never aired but that’s what the script said.”

Wonder Woman is not the only thing on Olga Kurylenko’s radar, however. The Ukrainian-born actress has been a hot commodity lately. Currently, Kurylenko is working with the Waldorf-Astoria on a commercial campaign in which she portrays a world-traveler’s experiences visiting the Waldorf-Astoria.

Kurylenko was also recently cast in the lead role of a new supernatural/horror film entitled Mara. The film is being directed and produced by Myles Nestle of The Solution Entertainment Group, Steven Schneider of Room 101 (Paranormal and Insidious), and James Edward Barker and Scott Mann of Mann Made Films. In Mara, Kurylenko plays the role of a criminal psychologist who is attempting to save a victim’s daughter and herself from being killed by a demon which attacks people in their sleep. The film is meant to explore the mythology and legends behind sleep paralysis and Sudden Unexpected Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS).

With those projects, along with several others on her plate, Kurylenko may not have time to devote toward recreating Wonder Woman. All we know at this point is that regardless of who is cast, Batman vs. Superman is going to be amazing.

  • Wonder Woman Fan Film Succeeds Where DC, Warner Brothers Fail

Whenever the subject of a Wonder Woman movie or TV show is discussed with those behind bringing DC’s heroes to the live-action screen, words like “tricky” and “getting her right” are often used, and meanwhile, fans are left, well, wondering where the hell their Wonder Woman live action content is. Thankfully, some fan films have come along to fill the smoldering gap that is littered with names like Adrianne Palicki and Joss Whedon. Aside from almost perfectly capturing the tenor and tone of the Wonder Woman character, these fan creations also act as mud in the eye of those behind getting the comic into made into a quality live action offering, preferably in the form of a feature film instead of television.

The latest, courtesy of Rainfall Films, shows getting Wonder Woman right might not be that tricky at all. All it takes is a little effort, some good casting, and the involvement of folks who care about the subject matter. The end result looks as good as any of the hero stuff that airs on the CW:

The movie’s centerpiece is played by Rileah Vanderbilt, and she’s rightfully enjoying the accolades she’s receiving, while offering some behind-the-scenes information:

Over at the video’s YouTube page, the movie’s director, Sam Balcomb, explains the motivation behind the film:

Firstly, thanks for watching. Whether you like, or dislike, our live action interpretation of Diana of Themyscira, Wonder Woman, born of clay, I think (quite a few of) you will agree she is a character just as vital and crucial to our understanding of humanity as any other superhero… if not more so.

We spent the majority of 2013 working on this — the look, the feel, the aspects we most wanted to portray. It’s a scant two and half minutes, but in the end, it’s one hundred and fifty seconds of pure fantasy, where I get to consider the two sides of my favorite warrior: a crusader in man’s world, and a paragon of virtue told through Greek mythology.

It’s a fun world to hang out in. I hope you enjoy it.

    – Sam

With that in mind, it would be nice if DC and Warner Brothers took the same kind of approach to making sure a quality Wonder Woman project was actually realized.

  • Batman: Arkham Origins Season Pass Detailed

Yesterday, Warner Bros. revealed that everyone who pre-orders the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins will receive the “Deathstroke Challenge Pack” for free. The add-on allows players to take on the role of Deathstroke (with several different costumes) in two different missions – one stealth and the other combat-focused.

Today, Warner Bros. further expanded its Arkham Origins announcements with the reveal of the game’s DLC season pass. The content bundle will cost $20, and comes with the promise of five future DLC add-ons. The season pass will be available for all systems (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC) when the game launches on October 25.

Of the five planned DLC packs for Arkham Origins, over half of them are costume packs. One pack contains the “Gotham by Gaslight” and “Brightest Day” skins for Batman. Two others have “New Millennium” and “Infinite Earths” skins for both Batman and Robin.

The other two packs actually have new game content. One is a series of challenge maps called “Initiation,” in which players take on the role of a young Bruce Wayne as he learns his ninja skills from Kirigi. The other is an “all-new story campaign” for Arkham Origins. Nothing has been revealed about the new campaign content, but it’s already likely to be the most popular of the planned DLC just announced.

  • Batman: Arkham Origins Gets Multiplayer

In the modern tradition of adding multiplayer modes to video games that don’t seem to need them, Warner Bros. today announced that the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins will have a competitive multiplayer mode.

The multiplayer portion of the game is being developed by Splash Damage, the developers of 2011’s Brink. The gameplay is being promoted as “traditional” gameplay from the Arkham games crossed with third-person shooter mechanics.

The “Invisible Predator Online” mode puts eight players into a battle arena. Six of them will assume the role of henchmen, three for Joker and three for Bane. While the henchmen teams battle it out, however, two players will get the privilege of playing as Batman and Robin. Those two players will be taking out the henchmen from the shadows, “intimidating” each team in an effort to have the gang’s leaders quit. At a certain point in the match, players can ascend to the role of either Joker or Bane, both of whom are, naturally, more powerful than their henchmen.

  • Comic-Con 2013: New ‘Batman: Arkham Origins’ Villain Revealed

San Diego Comic-Con is in full swing and the movie, video game, and general geek culture announcements are coming fast.

At yesterday’s Batman: Arkham Origins panel Warner Bros. revealed yet another of the assassins Batman will be battling in the prequel, due out on October 25 for current-generation consoles and PC. Copperhead will join Deadshot and Deathstroke as one of the 8 assassins led by Black Mask to kill the Batman on the night Origins takes place.

The Origins version of Copperhead appears to be based on the “New 52” version of the villain. As seen in the reveal trailer below, the snake-like woman version of Copperhead will be stalking Batman through the shadows of Gotham City:

Batman: Arkham Origins is set years before Arkham Asylum and will feature a younger and “unrefined” Batman. The new setting will allow the game’s writers to expand on the background of the Arkham series’ Batman, as well as bring back popular villains from the first two games.

  • Scribblenauts Unmasked Launches September 24

Back in May, Warner Bros. and 5h Cell announced that the next Scribblenauts title will be DC Comics-branded. The game, titled Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure, will feature over 2,000 characters from the DC Comics universe. 5th Cell even claimed that every character to ever appear in a DC comic book will be in Unmasked. That’s a bold claim, though the Scribblenauts series has always impressed with its seemingly endless number of create-able nouns.

Today, Warner Bros. announced that Unmasked will hit store shelves on September 24. The familiar Maxwell will be journeying through famous DC Comic locations such as Metropolis, Gotham City, and Atlantis. He will be helping heroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in their fight against villains such as Lex Luthor and The Joker.

Speaking of Superman, along with the release date announcement Warner Bros. has created an infographic to demonstrate that not only will all DC superheroes be in the game, but many of their variations over the years will also be available. As seen in the image, Superman variations such as Red Son Superman and Superman Beyond will be included.

  • ‘Man of Steel’ Greeted With Lukewarm Reviews

Zack Snyder’s more mature, grittier Superman reboot is finally here. Man of Steel, patterned after the success of Christopher Nolan’s more mature, grittier Batman reboot, features Henry Cavill as Kal-El, the super-powered Kryptonian who eventually becomes the most famous super hero ever created.

Though early movie-goers seem to have enjoyed Superman’s return, critics have weighed in with middling reviews, putting Man of Steel‘s tomatometer rating at a rotten 59% – below even 2006’s Superman Returns.

Critics praised the movie for its good special effects, which Snyder (who directed 300 and Watchmen) is well-known for. However, Man of Steel was criticized for being shallow, while at the same time taking itself too seriously. The reviews sound similar to ones written for Snyder’s last movie, 2011’s Sucker Punch.

Richard Roeper, who recently took over the Chicago Sun-Times’ movie reviews for the late Roger Ebert, stated there was “little humor or joy” in Man of Steel. Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers disagreed, saying that Christopher Nolan’s impact in co-writing Man of Steel made the movie “interesting.”

The Washington Post’s Ann Hornaday hated the movie, calling Snyder’s Superman “joyless,” and even panned “Hans Zimmer’s turgid, over-produced score…”

    From Hornaday’s review:

It takes nearly an hour for Clark to don the iconic red cape and “S”-imprinted chest plate, which turns out to be not even the midpoint in a story that, with its back-and-forths, jump cuts and flashbacks and repetitively percussive action sequences, seems to have been filmed by an easily distracted child or sentient garden hose.

Regardless of what the professional movie watchers think, it seems that fans are on-board for a new era of DC Comics movies. The hashtag #manofsteel is trending on Twitter, and Superman fans are themselves giving out short, mixed reviews:

  • Superman And Batman Come Together In New Comic Series

Superman and Batman have an interesting dynamic together that’s been explored numerous times in DC fiction over the years. One of the best examples was when Batman and Superman teamed up in World’s Finest to take down a partnership between The Joker and Lex Luthor. Now DC is bringing them back together for a new series.

DC Comics announced this week that it would be starting up a new Batman/Superman comic book series as part of the New 52 reboot that launched last year. The new series will focus on the first meeting between what are arguably DC’s most iconic and popular characters.

First time DC writer Greg Pak will be in charge of the story with Jae Lee handling the art. Marvel fans will know Pak from his work on Incredible Hullk and War Machine. Jae Lee is also a frequent Marvel artist who has worked on series like Fantastic Four and Young Avengers. This will not be Lee’s first time with DC, however, as he did the art for Before Watchmen: Ozymandias last year.

So what’s the new series going to be about? Pak isn’t saying much, but he did tell USA Today that the first meeting between the two heroes will probably not be pleasant:

“What would your reaction be if you saw a guy running around in a bat costume in the dead of night attacking people for the first time? And what would your reaction be if you met an alien who could crush steel in his bare hands for the first time? These guys are going to have very different immediate impressions of each other than we’re used to seeing with these characters.”

  • DC Superheroes Remade As Pixar Characters

DC Superheroes Remade As Pixar Characters

Put this under the category of “Not gonna ever happen in a hundred million years.” Some of our favorite DC superheroes have been re-imagined in the style of Pixar animation. For those of you living under a rock, Pixar is the studio responsible for films such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Up. Their cute CGI character are known throughout the world for not only how cute a lot of them are, but also for how realistic they seem on screen.

A 26 year old American artist names Daniel Araya has redrawn Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Green Lantern in that very distinct very Awww style that Pixar has become famous for. Check out his Deviant Art page for other great Pixar type stuff like Wolverine and Sabertooth, and Obi Wan! They all look great and he did a great job.

This is what he had to say about these pieces:

“A few weeks ago, just for fun I started doing concepts for a faux Justice League CG movie. I’ve always been a huge fan of Bruce Timm and the DC Timmverse he helped create, and I thought it would be cool to basically design the JLA movie that I would direct if given the chance. I didn’t do any huge drastic changes because I didn’t want to betray the characters in terms of who they are and what they’re about. I just wanted to build on what’s already been established and tweak things the way I saw them. I was going to wait until I had more artwork before I posted this, but with all the freelance I’ve got, I don’t think I’ll be able to work on this again for a while.”

Here are the 4 superheroes and a bit about them from the author:

    Superman

    (image)

    – Superman is a wholesome, good-natured guy with antiquated notions of heroism, and that’s what I like about him. He represents a more honest hero, and SO many people don’t like him because he’s too corny, or not badass enough, and I think that’s ridiculous. I hardly touched his costume at all because I wanted him to look corny and I wanted his image to reflect the dated quality of his beliefs. I really don’t like when people try to make him like, this dark, violent, angry guy just for the sake of making him cooler.

-Anyway I tried to make him primarily out of chunky square shapes, and I went as far as taking away the angles on his boots to make them a little more chunky and plain. I think he should be a big character to emphasize the fact that he’s all about IMMENSE power and protectiveness. I know a lot of people say that he shouldn’t be big because nothing would give him a workout, but I disagree because

    1) Every time I see him lift something, he looks like he’s straining real hard. Whether it’s a car, a piece of rubble, a building, it all seems to be difficult for him.

    2) The design reflecting the spirit of the character is more important to me than whether or not he’d be big in real life. He’s powerful and he’s protective, that’s what I want my design to emphasize.

    Batman

    (image)

-I wanted Batman to be composed of triangular shapes to emphasize how dangerous he is. I also didn’t want to draw him big and bulky because in my version he’s primarily an acrobat, not a bodybuilder. He’s constantly doing flips and jumping off rooftops, so he’d be extremely lean. I also gave him the more armored costume because

    1) It looks cool

    2) Having an outfit that looks more like protective gear while everyone else is wearing more “costume-y” outfits visually reinforces the fact that he’s human and mortal. It reminds us that he NEEDS this to protect him and that’s a trait that I (and I think most people) like about batman.

-I also made Batman’s skin even more pale here than in the Bruce Wayne pic to further emphasize the lack of warmth in Batman, and it also helped to add more contrast against the darkness of his suit. I like the idea of his face being that one little speck of pale, cold, humanity peeking out from this huge enveloping shroud of darkness.

    Wonder Woman

-I went with angry, warrior, man hating Wonder Woman. I feel like if you’re raised your entire life immersed in bigotry, you’re not just going to change your beliefs after a single adventure. It’s not gonna be like “oh these guys fought with me to save the world, men aren’t so bad.” Nobody just drops prejudiced opinions like that, they skew and distort things to keep supporting and maintaining their discrimination. I feel like her acceptance of men would be a very slow, gradual thing and it would never be 100%. I was mostly inspired by Darwyn Cooke’s design with some tweaks here and there where I thought it made more sense or would add some appeal.

    Green Lantern

-I thought it would be cool if his outfit was more of a manifestation of the ring’s power as opposed to just cloth. I think that’s the angle the live action movie is taking too, so I thought I’d do my version of that idea. I thought it would be cool if the green parts were constantly shifting, and seemed like you were looking inside some kind of unstable, nebulous energy reaction. I went with the spots because I was paying homage to that swiss cheese effect that Jack Kirby used to do whenever he drew energy.

  • Gay DC Character Headed to the Comic Book Universe

Gay DC character: Who will it be? At this point in time, legendary comic book company DC — you know, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. — isn’t revealing too many specific details surrounding the upcoming reinvention of a presently unnamed hero, though some believe the homosexual superhero will be an existing, established character.

This isn’t the first time that DC had dabbled with delivering gay comic book characters to the masses. After going back to the drawing board with the “New 52”, the company released books featuring Batwoman as a lesbian and Voodoo as a bisexual. Additionally, the Teen Titans franchise features an openly gay character named Bunker. However, despite previous claims that the gay superhero would be a new addition to the universe, DC has reversed its statement, proclaiming that one of its established characters is scheduled to come out of the closet.

This isn’t the first time that a major comic book publisher has tackled the subject of homosexuality. Rictor and Shatterstar of Marvel’s “X-Factor” series are a gay couple, though Shatterstar’s creator Rob Liefield was none too pleased about the revelation. Additionally, Marvel inserted two gay characters into its Young Avengers universe, namely Hulkling and Wiccan. However, DC’s suggestion that the character will be an established one is sure to draw some ire from old school fans and homophobes alike.

So who will it be? Superman? Batman? Robin? Twitter is an excellent source of unchecked speculation, and it would seem that the much-maligned Aquaman is a possibility, as is Amazonian butt-kicker Wonder Woman. A random sampling of the rumors currently swirling around the mico-blogging site have been collected and embedded below.

A DC comic hero is coming out? Hoping they don’t make the character lesbian. Not all gay men are effeminate. http://t.co/xtNe0lWQ

I wonder what ‘prominent character’ DC will ‘out’. Joker and Superman make sense. Truth, justice, and the American gay.
