  • Melissa Rivers Remembers Mom Joan Rivers in Moving Daytime Emmys’ Tribute

Melissa Rivers gave a moving tribute to her mom, Joan Rivers, at Sunday’s Daytime Emmy Awards Ceremony, just eight months after the iconic comedian lost her life during routine throat surgery at the age of 81.

Joan Rivers won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1990 and a clip of her acceptance speech was aired at the Emmy ceremony Sunday. Following the clip, Melissa Rivers took to the stage to remember her mother in a touching speech.

“After some terrible lows in my mom’s life, both personally and professionally, the cancellation of her late-night talk show and the unimaginable loss of my dad would’ve probably been more than most people could bear,” Melissa began, referring to Edgar Rosenberg’s 1987 suicide. “But not my mother. She refused to give up. And the daytime television community saved her.”

Joan famously struggled after her late night show was canceled after just one season. It took two years before she would return for the highly successful The Joan Rivers Show.

“It ran for five years, and brought her the only Emmy she would ever win,” Melissa shared. “This strong foundation reinvigorated her career, and my mother felt loved and valued by the daytime community, and for that I will always be grateful.”

Joan Rivers mentioned those difficult times in the clip of her 1990 Emmy win shown Sunday.

“Two years ago, I couldn’t get a job in this business. I could not get a job,” she said at the time. “My income dropped to one-sixteenth of what it was before I was fired. And people said I wouldn’t work again. And my husband, as you know, had a breakdown.”

Tearfully, she continued: “It’s so sad that he’s not here, because it was husband, Edgar Rosenberg, who always said, ‘You can turn things around.’ And except for one terrible moment in a hotel room in Philadelphia when he forget that, this is really for him. Because he was with me from the beginning, and I’m so sorry he’s not here.”

Melissa Rivers said her mother enjoyed more success than any one could have imagined after some very trying years.

“She went on to have 24 more fabulous years,” Melissa said Sunday, “and I got to enjoy all of them with her, as her producer, her business partner, her costar, and the best part was as her daughter.”

Betty White will be handed yet another award, a Lifetime Achievement award, to add to her already massive collection at next month’s Daytime Emmy Awards.

The 93-year-old actress will be honored for decades of contributions to the world of television.

Since the early 50’s, Betty White has been a favorite on several game shows, as well as many popular sitcoms like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls, and Hot in Cleveland.

Betty White has already won six Emmy Awards, beginning in 1975. She also has two SAG Awards, a People’s Choice Award and has been inducted into the TV academy’s Hall of Fame.

And, of course, Betty White already has a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

Betty White has definitely earned the honor.

Bob Mauro, president of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, agrees. He said in a statement, “Betty White is an American institution. He added, “She is one of the most beloved female performers in the history of television and the National Academy is proud to be honoring her with a most well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Along with her many performances and appearances on numerous shows throughout the years, there have been some very special experiences for Betty White.

NATAS Senior Vice President of Daytime, David Michaels, said, “Betty White is the First Lady of Game Shows. Betty was the darling of Password, where she met the love of her life, Allen Ludden, and a favorite on Match Game, The $25,000 Pyramid and countless others. She was the first woman to receive an Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host in 1983 for the show, Just Men.”

  • Daytime Emmys: General Hospital Has a Prescription For Success

The Daytime Emmys took place last Saturday, with long-running soap “General Hospital” taking home a quite a few statuettes in a number of different categories. The show, which began its run in 1963, has enjoyed 49 seasons to the tune of 12,590 episodes as of June 22nd. In an era when soaps are shuttering left and right, the program is apparently still holding strong. If its recent wins are any indication, this hospital may have some life in it for many years to come.

Of course, “General Hospital” wasn’t the only daytime drama that brought home some awards last weekend. Heather Tom of “The Bold and the Beautiful” fame took home the trophy for lead actress in a drama series, while the scribes working behind-the-scenes at “Days Of Our Lives” snagged the award for best writing team.

Not surprisingly, “Jeopardy!” brought home the statuette for best game show, though former E! correspondent Todd Newton won best host for his duties over at “Family Game Night”. “Live with Regis and Kelly”, meanwhile, won a pair of awards for best entertainment talk show and best talk show host. Unfortunate, Regis Philbin, who recently retired from the program, wasn’t in attendance to accept the honor.

Despite some of the problems the show is currently facing — rumors are swirling that NBC is anxious to replace Ann Curry with another host — “TODAY” was recognized as the best morning program. That’s got to make her feel somewhat better.
