  • David Bowie Tributes: Who Did It Best, Gaga Or Lorde?

David Bowie tributes have been the centerpiece of two major awards shows now, one earning what seemed like disgust and another earning praise from his son, Duncan Jones.

The Lady Gaga tribute at this year’s Grammys included a technicolor-splashed grand bouquet of weirdness accompanied by David Bowie’s hits, mostly from the 70’s and 80’s. None from the new, critically-acclaimed Blackstar.

It seemed Lada Gaga was too busy with costume changes and rushing through a thousand choruses of David Bowie‘s biggest hits to really pull off a classy tribute.

She was too busy trying to “become” David Bowie to really experience, and help the audience experience, a true appreciation for all that he brought to the world of music and performance.

Even David Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, decried her performance. He indicated that is was a bit…gaga.

However, a classy musical performance by a band that played with David Bowie for a long time and Lorde, who sang Bowie’s 1971 hit “Life On Mars”, captured Duncan Jones’ fancy so much so that he shared the link on Twitter.

  • David Bowie: Son Thanks Lorde For Tribute After Blasting Lady Gaga’s Performance

David Bowie left behind quite a mass of fans when he passed away earlier this year, and there’s been no shortage of tributes, covers, and performances done in honor of the late musician by those whose lives were touched by him. At last night’s Brit Awards, Lorde performed a simple, no-frills version of Bowie’s song “Life On Mars” and was rewarded with praise from his son Duncan Jones, who thanked her on Twitter.

The praise came soon after Lady Gaga’s performance at the Grammy Awards, which was sponsored by Intel and featured quite a few technological magic tricks, including one that made Gaga appear as though she was wearing David Bowie’s iconic Ziggy makeup as the show began. Viewers seemed to enjoy the tribute, which was an extended performance featuring several shortened versions of Bowie’s most popular songs, but Duncan Jones took to social media afterward to critique it.

“Overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.’ Damn it! What IS that word!?” he wrote of the definition of “gaga”.

British actor Gary Oldman was on hand to accept the “Icon” award on behalf of Bowie, giving an eloquent speech about his late friend that was tinged with emotion.

“In recent years, David sparingly spoke about music and his process. But in one of these rare instances, he graciously and eloquently expounded: ‘Music has given me over 40 years of extraordinary experiences. I can’t say that life’s pains or more tragic episodes have been diminished because of it, but it has allowed me so many moments of companionship when I have been lonely, and a sublime means of communication when I have wanted to touch people. It has been both my doorway of perception and the house that I live in.’…I can share with you that he faced his illness with tremendous courage, dignity, grace, and customary humor, even in dire circumstances. David, you were mortal, but your potential was superhuman and your remarkable music is living on. We love you and we thank you,” Oldman said.

  • David Bowie’s ‘Blackstar’ Inspires New Instagram Mini-Series, Premieres This Week

A David Bowie Instagram mini-series inspired by his latest album Blackstar will be released this week.

Just months before his death, Bowie gave InstaMiniSeries access to Blackstar before its release on January 8, so they could produce UNBOUND: A InstaMiniSeries. Unbound will give a visual interpretation of Bowie’s final album, and it aims to take the audience “on a journey of evocative images inspired by the moods suggested in the album’s music, lyrics, and artwork,” a press release said. The channel also uploaded a preview clip of the 16-episode series.

Whether through lyrics, melodies, film, theater or mythical persona he never fails to transcend WHAT WAS and set the tone – and the bar – for what CAN BE. So true!

Are you as excited as I am for this Instagram miniseries featuring David Bowie and his latest, and last, album?

  • David Bowie Now Permanently Inked Onto Lady Gaga’s Body

David Bowie now holds an esteemed place on Lady Gaga. In addition to living on in her heart, he also lives on the left side of her ribcage, too. She chronicled getting inked via Snapchat.

Lady Gaga’s new David Bowie tattoo was on display Wednesday evening when the singer arrived at the Rainbow Room in New York City, where she was scheduled to perform for a V magazine party. Wearing a dress that had a revealing cutout just above her waistline, the tattoo was in full view of anyone who glanced her way.

Lady Gaga lauded David Bowie at the Grammy Awards. Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, wasn’t impressed.

Alas Lady Gaga wasn’t bothered at all by Duncan Jones’s comment, in which he wrote a dictionary definition of the word “gaga.”

Do you think Lady Gaga’s tattoo of David Bowie is a bit strange? After all, she’s in love and engaged to marry the very handsome and sexy Taylor Kinney, star of NBC’s Chicago Fire. Or do you see it as more of a show of love and respect for someone from the music world held in very high esteem by Lady Gaga?

  • Natalie Cole: Late Singer’s Family Disappointed by Grammy Awards Tribute–or Lack Thereof

Natalie Cole was honored briefly at the Grammy Awards earlier this week, but certainly not in the way her sisters felt she deserved to have been remembered. Instead of a lengthy tribute, like David Bowie, Glenn Frey, and other music legends received, Natalie Cole was remembered with a short video remembrance at the end of a lengthy list.

“Sadly a FORGETTABLE tribute to Natalie Cole,” the singer’s sisters, twins Timolin and Casey Cole, said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight the day after the Grammys aired. “Words cannot express the outrage and utter disappointment at the disrespectful tribute, or lack thereof, to a legendary artist such as our sister.”

Natalie Cole’s sisters added that their father, Nat King Cole, was nominated for 21 Grammy Awards throughout his five decade career.

“It was shameless the way they minimized her legacy. We will find solace in her legacy as well as her endless fans around the world,” they added.

Actress Holly Robinson Peete took to social media to mention the lack of honor bestowed upon the late Natalie Cole at the Grammy Awards.

Talk show host Wendy Williams weighed in on Natalie Cole’s Grammys tribute this week.

Natalie Cole died on December 31 at the age of 65. Her hits included “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” in the 1970s, along with a remake of “Unforgettable” alongside a video recording of her late father, Nat King Cole.

Did you feel Natalie Cole received a deserving remembrance at the Grammy Awards earlier this week? Or are you among those–including her sisters–who believe the late singer got the short end of the tribute stick?

  • Duncan Jones, Son Of David Bowie, Cleverly Shades Lady Gaga’s Tribute To His Late Father

Lady Gaga’s tribute to the late British rocker David Bowie at the 2016 Grammys may have impressed many but one person did not seem to appreciate her performance.

Duncan Jones, son of the rock icon, made a cryptic Twitter post after the Grammy Awards show. “Overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.’ Damn it! What IS that word!?” Jones, a filmmaker, tweeted.

Although Jones did not mention any names, fans thought that he was referring to the eccentric singer-songwriter, Lady Gaga, when he quoted the Oxford English Dictionary definition of the term “gaga” in his tweet.

The tribute to Bowie, who died of cancer earlier this year, was among the most anticipated performances of the 58th Grammy Awards.

Lady Gaga channeled the Bowie persona Ziggy Stardust with her blue Marc Jacobs gown, bright orange hair, blue eye shadow, and huge killer heels, as she paid tribute to her “music hero.” She covered a medley of Bowie’s hit songs including “Space Oddity,” “Ziggy Stardust,” and “Rebel Rebel.”

Despite the criticism she received from Jones, the crowd was amazed not only by her voice but also by the costume and the “digital skin” technology the production staff used for her number.

Duncan Jones Was Not Impressed By This Bowie Tribute by Lady Gaga at the Grammys

A source told Hollywoodlife that Lady Gaga was not offended by Jones’ tweet. The source claims that the singer respects his opinion.

“Lady Gaga believes everyone is entitled to their own opinion, including David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones,” the source told HollywoodLife.com.

“She is, and always has been, a huge fan of David Bowie, his music, and what he stood for. She gave it her all [at The Grammys] and hopes she did the legendary rocker justice. She’s just super grateful she got to pay her respects by honoring him on such a special night,” added the source.

  • Duncan Jones Not Impressed With Lady Gaga’s David Bowie Tribute at the Grammy Awards

Duncan Jones is likely not a Lady Gaga fan. That would explain his blatant diss expressed via social media, following Lady Gaga’s tribute to his father, the late David Bowie, at the Grammy Awards on Monday night.

Lady Gaga wore a costume likely inspired by Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. She sang a few of David Bowie’s hits including “Space Oddity,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Changes.”

Duncan Jones took to Twitter following Lady Gaga’s performance.

What is that word? The word is “gaga.” Duncan Jones tweeted the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of the word.

That said, he likely either isn’t a fan of Lady Gaga or simply didn’t think she did an appropriate job of paying tribute to his late father.

Duncan Jones is David Bowie’s son with ex-wife Angela Bowie. Bowie also has a daughter, Alexandria, with wife Iman.

Did you see Lady Gaga’s tribute to David Bowie at the Grammys on Monday evening? Did you like her performance or do you agree with Duncan Jones’s inference that the tribute wasn’t quite up to par?

  • Natalie Cole: Sisters Disappointed by “Forgettable” Grammy Awards Tribute

Natalie Cole was honored briefly at Monday night’s Grammy Awards, but not the way her sisters felt she deserved to have been remembered. “Sadly a FORGETTABLE tribute to Natalie Cole,” the singer’s sisters, twins Timolin and Casey Cole, said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday. “Words cannot express the outrage and utter disappointment at the disrespectful tribute, or lack thereof, to a legendary artist such as our sister.”

  • Alexandria Zahra Jones, David Bowie’s Daughter, To Inherit A Fortune From The Late Rock Icon’s Estate

Alexandria Zahra Jones certainly is a lucky girl to have a legendary father who was loved by many and who loved her very much.

Even in death, David Bowie showed great generosity to the people he loved and cared about. His will, which was signed in August of 2004, was finally filed on Friday afternoon in a courthouse in Manhattan. According to a report by The New York Times, the 20-page document distributes his roughly $100 million estate among his immediate family and a couple of loyal employees.

Bowie, whose real name was David Jones, directed his executors to grant half of his fortune to his wife Iman, and the other half to his two children. The 60-year-old supermodel and businesswoman will be receiving her inheritance from Bowie’s attorneys in quarterly installments.

Meanwhile, his eldest child, Duncan Jones will get his 25% share upfront. Duncan is a 44-year-old film director whose mother is actress Angela Barnett.

His youngest child and only daughter, 15-year-old Alexandria Zahra Jones – or Lexi to her family and friends – will also receive $25 million, although she will have to wait until she turns 25 to gain access to it. Bowie also gave her his vacation property in upstate New York, which will also be hers on her 25th birthday.

He also left $2 million to his long-time personal assistant Corinne “Coco” Schwab, whom he also named guardian of Lexi in the event that Iman dies before she turns 18. Duncan’s former nanny, a Swiss woman named Marion Skene also received $1 million from the will.

Apart from the division of his fortune, David Bowie also indicated how the family is to manage his remains.

A Buddhist for most of his adult life, Bowie requested that his body be taken to the Indonesian island of Bali and “cremated there in accordance with the Buddhist rituals.”

“If that is not practical, then I direct that my executors shall arrange for my remains to be cremated and my ashes scattered in Bali,” the will further stated.

The late “Changes” singer succumbed to liver cancer last month at the age of 69, just two days after the release of his album, Blackstar. He was known for being extremely low-key and private, and was rarely seen out except for when he walked his daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones to school.

  • David Bowie Left Instructions in Will to Have Ashes Strewn in Bali

David Bowie died on January 10 at the age of 69. The singer and actor–whose legal name was David Jones–suffered from cancer for about a year and a half before he died.

In his will, David Bowie left explicit instructions about his estate. Nearly half will go to wife Iman. Half will be divided between his two children, Duncan Jones and Alexandria Zahra Jones.

David Bowie even left instructions stating he wished to be cremated, and that he wanted his ashes strewn in Bali.

In his will, which was prepared back in 2004, Bowie explained that if cremation on the island of Bali wasn’t possible, he wanted to be cremated elsewhere and have his ashes strewn there just the same.

ABC News reports that according to David Bowie’s death certificate, his remains were cremated in New Jersey two days after he passed away.

It’s uncertain if Iman will travel to Bali with their daughter and his son to strew the ashes or not.

Making end-of-life wishes known often helps surviving family members during their times of grief. David Bowie likely took several things off Iman’s mind by preparing his will in such fine detail so many years ago.

  • Alexandria Zahra Jones, Daughter of David Bowie and Iman, Receives One-Quarter of Late Father’s Estate

Alexandria Zahra Jones is the daughter of the late David Bowie and model and designer Iman. Named recently in her late father’s will, Alexandria Zahra Jones will one day be a very wealthy woman.

According to a report from the New York Times, Bowie–whose real name was David Jones–left behind a 20-page will that was filed in Manhattan on Friday. The singer and actor was worth approximately $100 million.

David Jones left the two penthouses he purchased in 1999 and combined, to his wife Iman Abdulmajid Jones. Of the remainder of his estate, one-quarter is left too his son from his marriage to the former Mary Angela Barnett–Duncan Jones–and one-quarter to Alexandria Zahra Jones. Iman receives one-half of the remaining estate, with the exception of money bequeathed to the family’s nanny and David Bowie’s longtime personal assistant.

Corinne Schwab, known as Coco, was that personal assistant. She will receive $2 million. The family nanny, Marion Skene, will receive $1 million.

David Bowie also owned a mountain retreat in upstate New York, which will go to his daughter.

Since Alexandria Zahra Jones is only 15, her portion of her late father’s estate will go into a trust. Most trusts allow disbursements every few years at certain ages.

David Bowie died on January 10 at his home in Manhattan of cancer. He was cremated, per his wishes, in New Jersey on January 12. Per his wishes, his ashes will be strewn in Bali, “in accordance with the Buddhist rituals of Bali.”

Alexandria Zahra Jones will one day be an incredibly rich woman, but would likely trade the wealth for more time with her beloved father.

  • Lexi Bowie: David Bowie’s Daughter Was Able To Experience Him As David Jones, Father

Lexi Bowie knew our David Bowie as only a daughter can know her father.

To Lexi Bowie the legendary musician was simply David Jones, her dad.

It is only appropriate that David Bowie spent the last decade of his life in the prized domestic role.

He was frequently spotted in New York with Lexi Bowie on school runs or out with Lexi and his wife, Iman, just enjoying the city.

Iman once said their life included, “going to the park and sitting in cafés. We’re just ordinary people. Our life is domestic.”

Bowie’s longtime friend and keyboardist Mike Garson revealed that his decision to live out his final years as solely a husband to Iman and father to Lexi Bowie came after his last, somewhat disastrous tour.

During his Reality tour in 2004, a staff member met with a tragic end and Bowie himself suffered a blocked artery onstage. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where an emergency angioplasty was performed.

Garson said, “Three-quarters through the Reality tour, he said, ‘You know, Mike, after this tour, I’m just going to be a father and live a normal life. And I’m going to be there for Lexi while she grows up. I missed it the first time.’”

The “first time” Bowie was referring to is his son, originally named Zowie Bowie, who he had with his first wife, Angie Bowie.

Zowie Bowie was later changed to Duncan Jones. He is now a director in his 40’s, and despite Bowie admitting that he “missed it”, the two remained close.

Lexi Bowie was fortunate to have her father totally involved in her life and David Bowie clearly enjoyed his days as her father.

What do you think about David Bowie settling down to be a husband to Iman and father to Lexi Bowie in his final years?

  • Jennifer Connelly: Will She Star in “Labyrinth” Reboot?

Jennifer Connelly recently spoke out about her Labyrinth costar–David Bowie–upon the sad news that the singer and actor had passed away almost two weeks ago. Now word is circling about a reboot of the film–but no one seems to know a lot about it.

In 1986’s Labyrinth, Jennifer Connelly played the role of a teenager (she was a teenager at the time), who had to navigate Jareth’s (played by David Bowie) labyrinth to prevent her little brother from becoming a goblin.

“I met David Bowie when I was 14 and he became a hero to me–because he was an artist, and because he was a genius who had the time to be kind,” Connelly said in a recent statement to Entertainment Weekly. “I’d never met such an extraordinary artist before, and I haven’t since–the world will be a grayer place without him. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

The Hollywood Reporter said late this week that a Labyrinth reboot is in the works.

“TriStar has closed a deal with The Jim Henson Co. to produce a new iteration and has hired Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman to pen the script,” they report.

Nothing is said, however, about casting. Surely Jennifer Connelly won’t reprise her role as Sarah–unless Sarah in the new film is all grown up–but fans would certainly love to see her cast.

Who do you think casting directors might consider to fill the late David Bowie’s role of Jareth?

Hollywood is abuzz about the reboot of Labyrinth, but those involved are keeping tight-lipped.

Jennifer Connelly has yet to comment on whether or not she’s being kept apprised of the plans.

  • Glenn Frey, Eagles Singer and Guitarist, Dies at 67

Glenn Frey of The Eagles has died at the age of 67. The singer and guitarist passed away in New York City on Monday.

TMZ reports Glenn Frey died from “a combination of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia.”

Frey co-wrote and sang nearly all of the Eagles’ hits, including “Take It Easy,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Heartache Tonight,” and more.

Following the Eagles’ split in 1980, Glenn Frey launched a solo career, with hits including “The Heat is On” and “You Belong to the City.”

Billboard reports The Eagles confirmed Glenn Frey’s death on their website.

“Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia,” a statement reads. “Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.”

Fellow Eagles band mate Don Henley issued his own statement about Glenn Frey’s untimely passing.

“He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction. But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved. We were two young men who made the pilgrimage to Los Angeles with the same dream: to make our mark in the music industry–and with perseverance, a deep love of music, our alliance with other great musicians and our manager, Irving Azoff, we built something that has lasted longer than anyone could have dreamed. But, Glenn was the one who started it all. He was the spark plug, the man with the plan,” Henley wrote.

“He had an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn’t quit. He was funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven. He loved is wife and kids more than anything. We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow. We brought our two-year “History of the Eagles Tour” to a triumphant close at the end of July and now he is gone. I’m not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life. Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some,” he added.

The music world is still reeling from the loss of David Bowie just days ago. Now it has lost yet another of its own in the passing of Glenn Frey.

  • Jennifer Connelly Mourns Passing of “Labyrinth” Costar David Bowie

Jennifer Connelly was just a teenager when she appeared in Labyrinth alongside the late David Bowie. On Monday she–along with countless others–mourned the passing of the actor and musician.

“I met David Bowie when I was 14 and he became a hero to me–because he was an artist, and because he was a genius who had the time to be kind,” Connelly said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “I’d never met such an extraordinary artist before, and I haven’t since–the world will be a grayer place without him. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

It was almost 30 years ago when David Bowie starred in his role as Jareth in Labyrinth. Jennifer Connelly played Sarah, whose younger brother was stolen away by Jareth while she was babysitting. Connelly’s character had to complete Jareth’s labyrinth within 11 hours to prevent her little brother from turning into a goblin.

David Bowie’s untimely passing from cancer on Sunday hit those close to him–as well as his fans–hard. Jennifer Connelly is blessed to have these memories of him stored safely in her heart and mind.

  • Conan O’Brien Honors David Bowie With Montage Of His ‘Late Night’ Appearances

Following news of David Bowie’s death, late night talk show host Conan O’ Brien paid tribute to the musician on his TBS show Conan on Monday night.

“Obviously this is a very sad day. Everyone found out that David Bowie passed away yesterday. Incredibly sad news,” O’Brien began his monologue.

“He was on our show several times over the years and the man was always outstanding. People are remembering today what a phenomenal musician David Bowie was and of course that was the case. He was mind-blowing talented, but in my experience, he was always an incredibly nice person, he was fun, he was always funny,” he said.

Bowie, who had been a frequent guest in O’Brien’s Late Night show on NBC, passed away at 69, after an 18-month battle with cancer. Conan O’Brien had interviewed David Bowie several times on his show so he honored the “phenomenal musician” with a five-minute clip showcasing his funny and goofy side.

Conan O’Brien Honors David Bowie’s Memory with a Montage of his Show Appearances

The clip showed interviews with Bowie, including one episode in which O’Brien revealed the singer’s famed onstage characters. Bowie then reluctantly obliged to sing a song that O’Brien wrote and did a pretty good impression of Tom Brokaw. Bowie also joked about flying over to Memphis to celebrate his birthday with his drinking buddy – the late Elvis Presley.

Conan O’Brien was not the only one who honored the rock icon on national TV, as The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon remembered Bowie on his program.

Fallon called him a “great artist, one-of-a-kind singer, songwriter, actor, fashion icon, mad genius who also had one of the greatest senses of humor of anyone I’ve ever met.”

Jimmy Fallon Remembers David Bowie on His Show
