Amazon Set to Pass UPS and FedEx as Largest US Delivery Service

Amazon is on the verge of a major milestone, as it closes in on UPS and FedEx as the largest US delivery service.

Amazon may have started as an online book sales platform, but it has grown far beyond its origins. The company is now the largest e-commerce platform, the largest cloud provider and will soon be the largest delivery service, according to CNBC.

While Amazon originally relied on other services to deliver its products, it has increasingly invested in its own service over the last few years. Dave Clark, Amazon’s CEO of Worldwide Consumer, told CNBC that the company expects to become the biggest service in late 2021 or early 2022.

“We expect we will be one of the largest carriers in the world by the end of this year,” Clark told CNBC’s Becky Quick. “I think we’ll probably be the largest package delivery carrier in the U.S. by the time we get to the end of the year, if not in early ’22.”

The company says customers spend more than $1.9 billion on some 70 million small business products, representing more than a 100% increase from the previous year.

“A huge thank you to all of the Amazon teams who made this Prime Day possible for members worldwide and to Prime members who supported small businesses in big ways,” said Dave Clark, CEO of Worldwide Consumer. “Prime members are an important part of our Amazon family, and we love to celebrate them during Prime Day with incredible deals and entertainment, including this year’s Prime Day Show.”

Some of the most popular categories were tools, electronics, beauty, nutrition, baby care, household products and apparel.

One of President Biden’s biggest challenges will be significantly increase the pace of the country’s vaccination efforts. In an open letter, Amazon’s Dave Clark, CEO, Worldwide Consumer, made it clear the company is ready to assist.

We have an agreement in place with a licensed third-party occupational health care provider to administer vaccines on-site at our Amazon facilities. We are prepared to move quickly once vaccines are available. Additionally, we are prepared to leverage our operations, information technology, and communications capabilities and expertise to assist your administration’s vaccination efforts. Our scale allows us to make a meaningful impact immediately in the fight against COVID-19, and we stand ready to assist you in this effort.

Clark also makes the case that Amazon’s workers, many of whom are considered essential workers, should be among the first vaccinated.

There is no word yet on whether the new administration will take Clack up on the offer, but it’s a safe bet no options are off the table.

Coronavirus: Amazon Hiring Additional 100,000 Warehouse Workers

With more Americans relying on online shopping during the coronavirus pandemic, Amazon is hiring an additional 100,000 warehouse workers.

Dave Clark, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations said: “We are opening 100,000 new full and part-time positions across the U.S. in our fulfillment centers and delivery network to meet the surge in demand from people relying on Amazon’s service during this stressful time, particularly those most vulnerable to being out in public.”

In addition to working to meet demand and help people who are relying on the ecommerce giant, Amazon is also taking measures to help employees cope with the added challenges by offering a $2 per hour raise.

“In addition to the additional 100,000 new roles we’re creating, we want to recognize our employees who are playing an essential role for people at a time when many of the services that might normally be there to support them are closed,” Clark continued. “In the U.S., we will be adding an additional $2 USD per hour worked through April from our current rate of $15/hour or more, depending on the region, £2 per hour in the UK, and approximately €2 per hour in many EU countries. This commitment to increased pay through the end of April represents an investment of over $350 million in increased compensation for hourly employees across the U.S., Europe, and Canada.”

Amazon’s announcement is welcome news for customers and warehouse employees alike, and will hopefully help ease the strain from the coronavirus pandemic.
