  • Student Jailed 5 Days Without Food Or Water

A student from California University was left in a holding cell for five days without food or water.

Eight people, including Daniel Chong, were arrested during a drug raid at a San Diego home on April 21, 2012. Chong was apparently forgotten in the holding cell and he reported that he was forced to drink his own urine and nearly died from dehydration. According to Chong’s attorneys, he was suffering from severe dehydration, muscle deterioration, hallucinations, liver and kidney failure and extremely high levels of sodium and he lost 15 pounds during the ordeal. A statement from the DEA said that,”Seven suspects were brought back to county detention.” One was released, but “accidentally left in one of the cells”.

24-year-old, Chong spent five days in a San Diego hospital, three of them were in the intensive care unit. He filed a $20 million claim, a precursor to a lawsuit, against the DEA. San Diego defense attorney Gretchen Von Helms said, “In all my years of practice I’ve never heard of the DEA or any federal government employee simply forgetting about someone that they have in their care. There has to be repercussions if people do not follow the safety and the care when they have a human being in their custody.”

Chong’s attorneys, Eugene Iredale and Julia Yoo, announced Tuesday that they had settled that claim with the DEA for $4.1 million.

To its credit, the government has responded by acknowledging responsibility, apologizing personally to Daniel and instituting changes in policies regarding safety checks for prisoners in temporary holding cells at DEA facilities. What happened to Daniel Chong should never happen to any human being on the face of the planet.

  • College Student Left in Holding Cell for Five Days: Twitter Reacts

Here’s yet another reason to say no to drugs, kids. You’ve been warned.

A University of California, San Diego college student was left in a holding cell for five days after being rounded up in a drug raid involving nine people and quite a few ecstasy pills. Engineering student Daniel Chong, 24, said that DEA officials told him that he would soon be released after being placed in a holding cell. One even went as far as to say that he would give Chong a ride home once everything was said and done. Unfortunately, agents forgot about the poor guy, leaving him without food or water for nearly five whole days.

In order to stay alive, Chong had to whatever he could, including “recycling” his own urine. At one point, the college student bit through his glasses so he could use the shards to scratch “Sorry Mom” into his arm in case he didn’t make it out of the ordeal alive. Reports also suggest that Chong ingested a mysterious white powder, later identified as methamphetamine, that was accidentally left in the cell.

“I had to recycle my own urine,” Chong stated in an interview. “I had to do what I had to do to survive. When they opened the door, one of them said ‘Here’s the water you’ve been asking for.’ But I was pretty out of it at the time.”

Although he could hear voices on the other side of the walls and door, nobody seemed to notice that he was still locked inside the cell. Chong tried screaming, kicking the doors and walls, and causing as much of a ruckus as he possibly could to draw attention to the fact that he had been completely forgotten by authorities. This, of course, was to no avail.

Chong wasn’t freed from the tiny room until April 25th. Upon release, he was treated for cramps, dehydration, and a perforated lung from ingesting bits of broken glass.

Officials have yet to comment on why, exactly, Chong was left without basic necessities for so long. His attorney, of course, plans to file a complaint with the federal government.

Folks on Twitter seem to have an opinion on the subject. What do you think about this very peculiar scenario? Are Chong’s claims valid, or is he looking for a way to deflect attention away from his arrest? Let us know in the comments section.
