  • ‘The Witcher’ Developer Opens New Studio in Poland

Though the studio has released only two games, CD Prrojekt RED (CDPR) today announced that it will be expanding its operations. The developer has opened a new studio in Krakow, Poland.

CDPR is the developer of The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, both of which were hits with critics. The developer’s main studio in Warsaw, Poland was founded in 2002. The company also operates the popular DRM-free online game store GOG. CDPR’s announcement stated that the new Krakow studio will “bolster” the development of its current projects.

“A new studio, new people and new energy – we’re growing and we’re extremely excited that we can tap into the potential that Krakow has to offer,” said Adam Badowski, managing director of CDPR. “We want to continue to make better and better RPGs and the new studio is another big step in that direction. Krakow, one of the cultural and scientific centers of Europe, is a really special place that will leave a significant mark on our games.”

CDPR is currently working on two next-generation video games. One is the third game in the Witcher series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is currently slated for a release sometime in 2014. The other Cyberpunk 2077, a new RPG set in the future dystopia of the Cyberpunk pen-and-paper RPG.

Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t have a release window yet, and won’t be complete until 2015 at the earliest. What it does have is one of the best CGI teaser trailer for a video game since Dead Island:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 Creator Muses on Inspiration

With the release of the sexy slow-mo CG teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077, new interest in the upcoming title has exploded. To give gamers a sense of what they can expect from the title, Mike Pondsmith, creator of the pen-and-paper Cyberpunk RPG, is starring in a new trailer for the game.

Pondsmith is collaborating with CD Projekt RED on Cyberpunk 2077, and his vision seems to be taking priority at the developer. Everyone knows that cyberpunk entertainment deals with advanced technology in the semi-near future, but in the new video Pondsmith describes the cyberpunk genre more as an atmosphere. The imagery he invokes certainly seems reminiscent of Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, or any number of William Gibson or Neal Stephenson novels.

“Cyberpunk is about that interface between people and technology, but not in that transhumanist way where it’s all about the technology changing or improving them, it’s about how people use things,” said Pondsmith. “There’s a great Gibson saying: ‘The street finds its uses for things,’ and that’s what cyberpunk is about. Cyberpunk isn’t about saving humanity, it’s about saving yourself.”

Pondsmith also reveals that CD Project RED was chosen to develop the game because it was clear the developers there were fans of the original RPG. He describes 2077 as a mature form of the RPG, and fans of the original will be able to see the outcomes of events seen in Cyberpunk 2020.

  • New Cyberpunk 2077 Details, Hidden Messages Emerge

Yesterday’s debut teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 wasn’t the only thing CD Projekt RED released on the subject of its upcoming science fiction game. It turns out the trailer contains a secret message for those who are observant and clever. Luckily, the internet makes in unnecessary for each of us to try and pause the YouTube video to read the message:

Do you like our latest creation? We certainly hope so 🙂 You may remember that we sometimes send you guys secret messages like this. It’s a great way for us to speak right to you instead of burying ourselves in corporate mumbo-jumbo so let’s begin!

First of all – have you noticed all the details in our teaser (yes, it’s a teaser. We’ll make a proper trailer in the future)? If you know the Cyberpunk setting there are some things you can spot, like implants – look for the weapon hands and the real skin – corporate emblems that should look familiar and more. Happy hunting!

You’re probably curious about the release date. It’s currently scheduled a way off in 2015 but in truth the delivery date is more like “when it’s done.” We will release Cyberpunk to you when we’re convinced it is nothing but pure, refined, unadulterated awesome. We want it to be the most kick ass futuristic RPG ever – OK, maybe this sounds pretty bully, but it is our actual goal! You judge if we deliver it!

Oh – and you may wonder why we announced our game so early before the release. The reason is that we’re still building our dev team so if you are a talented dude or dudette willing to work in a really different company (gamers rule & boring corporate stuff drools!) on a super ambitious project, send us your application right now! careers@cdprojektred.com

So you want to know what kind of game Cyberpunk 2077 will be? The short description is that it will be a story-heavy, nonlinear, open world RPG based on the well known Cyberpunk pen&paper system and setting. Building open world games is something we are mastering right now and we believe that properly joining nonlinear gameplay with an excellent story telling will bring a totally new quality. Mmm… We’ll tell some more about it soon!

And that’s not all that’s new. We are about the reveal our other project which is much closer to being completed and yes, it will also be a fully open-world game with an intense story. You can probably guess the game we’re talking about 🙂 On the 5th of February it will all be clear.

So stay tuned as we will have quite a lot to show and tell you soon!

We are waiting for you on our newly created forum called Afterlife – what other name could we have chosen for it?

    CD Projekt RED Team

The 2015 release window is a bit disappointing, but it’s better that the developer is taking the time to get the game right. Better one much-delayed cyberpunk masterpiece than several rushed cyberpunk titles.

The Afterlife forums appear to be the official community forums for the Cyberpunk 2077 project. The developers there are soliciting suggestions for the game from the community. Also, one of the first posts to the forum gives a few more teasers for the game’s “grim vision of the future,” which includes a form of entertainment called “braindancing.” It’s certainly good that Night City won’t be glitzy, as one of the hallmarks of the cyberpunk genre is dystopia and the idea that technology hasn’t been a savior for humanity, but can easily be used to enslave it.

  • Cyberpunk 2077 Trailer Shows a Devastated Night City

One week ago it leaked out that the trailer for the next CD Projekt RED (CDPR) was only a week away. Though that week may have passed slowly for fans, it has passed. The Cyberpunk 2077 teaser trailer is here, showing why the cyberpunk genre is about to make a comeback in videogames.

Though the trailer doesn’t contain any in-game footage, it does provide a good overview of the game’s style and art direction, which fans of the Cyberpunk tabletop role-playing game (RPG) might recognize. The video is more of an extension of the sexy teaser image unveiled at the game’s announcement.

Those who watch carefully can also catch a hint at what might be happening in Night City in 2077. However, the video’s description provides more background, describing the sequence as a depiction of how a “psycho squad” can acquire a new member:

The Psycho Squad specializes in combating “psychos” — individuals who overuse implants and substances that boost or otherwise alter the human body.

There comes a point when they overdose on these innovations, and their bodies start to rebel against their biological body parts as well as all things organic around them. Simply put, they start killing people, who they now derisively call “meatbags.”

When a psycho goes on the rampage, strange things can happen. There’s carnage, and the psycho might be taken down by regular police, but they’re not always able to get the job done.

When things spin out of control, they call in MAX-TAC (Maximum Force Tactical Division), popularly called the Psycho Squad.

CDPR, the developers of the award-winning The Witcher series, have announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will be a mature-themed sandbox RPG featuring futuristic weapons, implants, upgrades, and gadgets for players to use. The mechanics and setting for the game will be based on those found in the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG.

  • Cyberpunk 2077 Trailer Coming Next Week(ish)

With the cult hit that CD Projekt RED (CDPR) has on its hands in The Witcher series, it would be easy for them to sit back and run that franchise into the ground with sequels. Thankfully, the developers at the Polish studio are more ambitious.

Back in October, the CDPR announced that it is currently developing a science fiction RPG based on the pen and paper RPG Cyberpunk. Titled Cyberpunk 2077, the game will be an mature-themed sandbox RPG featuring futuristic weapons, implants, and gadgets. Now, less than three months on from that official announcement, it appears gamers will get a look at what Night City will look like in video game form.

Tom Ohle, director at Evolve PR today leaked over Twitter the fact that he is watching an early cut of the first Cyberpunk 2077 teaser trailer. His original tweet appears to have been deleted, but it has been immortalized on the NeoGAF forums, where the image below comes from.

Ohle followed up his proclamation by providing a few cryptic answers to fan questions. Those answers included the detail that the trailer will be released “Next weekish.” Some, but not all, of those tweets are still live:

    Cyberpunk trailer date leak

Though it doesn’t seem as if CDPR has had enough time to develop anything trailer-worthy, fans of the developer and the Cyberpunk series could be in for a nice surprise. Judging from Ohle’s enthusiasm, the trailer should be pretty exciting.

  • Cyberpunk 2077 Announced by CD Projekt RED

During the CD Projekt RED (CDPR, the developer behind The Witcher series) summer announcement event, it announced it had begun developing an RPG based on the pen and paper RPG Cyberpunk. Though the developers announcement event today revolved mostly around Good Old Games going Mac, but the big reveal was held for last.

Cyberpunk 2077 was revealed as the name of the upcoming RPG, and a few details about the title were also rolled out. The game will be an “ambitious RPG for mature audiences, set in the corrupt and tech-advanced world of the year 2077.” Except the date, that much was already known, but CDPR then revealed that the game will feature a a multi-thread story taking place in a sandbox environment centered on Night City.

A “gigantic” arsenal of weapons, upgrades, implants, and “cool high-tech gadgets” will also be a part of 2077. If the image above is any indication, some of those implants will be both deadly and sexy. Another point made during the presentation is that the game will feature “advanced RPG mechanics based on the pen and paper RPG and upgraded for the 2077 setting.

Cyberpunk pen and paper RPG creator Mike Pondsmith once again took the stage to announce these teaser details. Over on the game’s newly launched blog and website, Pondsmith is writing about his experiences developing the game with CDPR. From one of his first blog posts:

Believe it not, almost none of my friends in the digital or the tabletop game industry has ever asked me why the heck we committed our Cyberpunk baby to the tender mercies of a bunch of guys in some far off place like Poland. Some of them have wondered why I’m willing to endure nine hours on a plane and days of crushing jet lag to work personally with the Cyberpunk dev team, but in the main, CDPR is pretty well respected in the circles I run in and my colleagues all think we were damned lucky to hook up with them. (And when the jet lag clears, I usually agree.)
