  • Cyber Monday 2014: Sears and Kmart

Sears and Kmart’s Cyber Week deals start Sunday, Nov. 30 at midnight, and run until Saturday, Dec. 6 at 11:59 p.m.

Sears has been losing money and closing department stores as of late, and the multinational department store chain based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, also owns Kmart, which has likewise been losing money. During the three months before November 2, Sears saw losses of $534 million, or $5.03 per share. A year earlier, the company lost $498 million, or $4.70 per share, in the same time frame.

The two sister companies interchangeably allow free in-store pick-up at any of the remaining 1,800 Sears or Kmart locations nationwide. Shipping is free for orders at $59 or more.

    Notable Sears Deals include:

    – A Kenmore 25 cu. ft. side-by side stainless steel refrigerator for $819.99
    – A Kenmore high-efficiency top-load washer and dryer for $449.88 each
    – A Samsung Bagless Upright Vacuum with Motion Sync Design for $174.99
    – A Samsung 60″ 1080p 240Hz Ultra Slim 3D LED Full HD Smart TV for $1299.99
    – A Samsung 55″ Class 1080p LED Smart HDTV for $799.99

    Notable Kmart deals include:

    – A Sanyo 50″ Class 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV $429.99
    – An RCA 46″ LED TV for $349.99
    – A Westinghouse LED 39″ HDTV 1080p 120Hz for $249.99
    – 50 percent off Hasbro games
    – A Craftsman 42 piece 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch Drive Bit and Torx Bit Socket Wrench Set for $29.99
    – Up to 40 percent off Joe Boxer apparel for the family plus save 15 to 25 percent off with code CYBER25

Some Sears Black Friday 2013 mayhem:

Hedge fund billionaire Eddie Lampert, chairman and CEO of Sears, has shifted the focus of the company toward building upon its ‘Shop Your Way’ program, which caters to loyal customers. Under-performing stores are being shut down, including the location at the Fayette Mall in Lexington, Kentucky. At present, the ‘Shop Your Way’ members-only program accounts for 70% of Sears sales, up from 65% last year.

“The focus is less on selling products and just running stores,” Lampert said. “But serving members first.” During the last quarter, revenue fell 7% to $8.27 billion, mostly due to fewer Sears and Kmart stores in operation. Still, revenue at the stores still open, which indicates a retailer’s health, fell 3.1%.

The Walmart Black Friday 2014 memory card battle:

In related news, Walmart, the world’s largest company by revenue, the largest private employer globally, with over two million employees, and the largest retailer in the world, saw its largest organized protest on Black Friday since it was founded by Sam Walton in 1962.

Over 1,600 demonstrators were unified by the Organization United for Respect at Walmart (OUR Walmart). The protesters appeared at various Walmart locations, demanding a $15 per hour minimum wage, and more consistent full-time opportunities.

“We’re a grassroots movement,” Abby Friend, a protester from Cincinnati remarked. “We’re here today as a group of concerned consumers.”

Military police had to step in to secure a safe shopping experience during the Black Friday event at a Walmart in Ferguson, Missouri:

Walmart recently announced in a statement that it received more than 500 million page views and the highest online sales day ever on Thanksgiving this year, second only to Cyber Monday 2013.

  • Black Friday Deals? Cyber Monday May Be The Better Bargain

For years, holiday shoppers have planned out survival guides for the formidable Black Friday.

Some think of Black Friday as proof positive that the Christmas season is one big ode to hypocrisy.

However, for many years it has been the day that many stores have strongly relied on to bring their sales figures into the black (hence the name).

But a new challenger has appeared in recent years.

Cyber Monday isn’t so much threatening stores (at least those with online sales services available), as a possible signal that we’re on the verge of a paradigm shift.

Last year, more people were said to have shopped online than in brick-and-mortar stores for the first time in history.

Positive response to Cyber Monday deals is aided by the convenience of shopping at home during one’s leisure time.

Compare this with Black Friday, where shoppers are expected to wake up in the middle of the night, stumble to the store, and then physically fight over a discounted appliance.

The madness associated with Black Friday sales has long been a heavy criticism of the event.

There have been injuries, deaths, and numerous arrests associated with the yearly sales event.

If this weren’t bad enough, last year there was a terrible hacking scandal at retailer Target right before Black Friday. This event involved the stealing of hundreds of thousands of customers’ credit card information.

There have been several major hacking incidents since, which could make some reluctant to go out in person and scan their cards.

Cyber Monday may come to be viewed as a safer and saner alternative to Black Friday.

Especially those who want all of the holiday deals and none of the drama typically associated with a Black Friday sales event.

Which sales day do YOU prefer: Black Friday or Cyber Monday? Do you shop both days?

  • Cyber Monday: How Do The Deals Compare To Black Friday Deals?

Now that Black Friday is in the past, it’s time for both stores and shoppers to focus on Cyber Monday deals. If you aren’t familiar with Cyber Monday, it is the Monday after Thanksgiving when online stores offer sales, deals and specials. Many people prefer Cyber Monday over Black Friday because they are able to get good deals on hot holiday gifts, without leaving their homes or fighting traffic and large crowds.

While Cyber Monday is becoming increasingly popular with both stores and shoppers, many people still feel that Black Friday offers the best deals of the season. So how do this year’s Cyber Monday deals compare to the deals from Black Friday?

Instead of only offering online deals on Cyber Monday this year, Walmart has decided to offer their online deals the entire week after Thanksgiving. Some of the best online deals at Walmart.com include a Double Power 7″ tablet for $59, a 46″ Samsung LED TV for $478 and an Apple iPod Touch for $199. Walmart is also offering lower prices on toys, clothing and home goods and free shipping on order over $35.

While many shoppers will take full advantage of these deals, they just don’t compare to some of the deals from Walmart’s Black Friday event when shoppers were grabbing up 32″ TV’s for $98 and iPad Minis for $299 with a $100 Walmart Gift card.

Target is also offering an entire week of deals, starting on Cyber Monday. Some of their deals include buy one get one 50% off on clothing, shoes and accessories, price cuts on their entire toy selection, including the Furby Boom which will be $40.99, and a Canon Powershot A3500 16MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom for $99.99.

These deals don’t seem that great either when compared to Black Friday prices, when the Furby Boom was being sold for $30 at several stores and with many others offering 50% off clothing and accessories.

While shopping at some online stores during Cyber Monday may be disappointing, stores that only offer online shopping such as Amazon will be offering some of the best prices online during their Cyber Monday deals week. Their ad promises shoppers that they can save as much as 20% on tablets, 40% on cameras and over 50% on hundreds of other items including gourmet cookware, telescopes and small electronics.

  • Cyber Monday Ad Warning: Look out for Scams

Cyber Monday Ad Warning: Look out for Scams

Cyber Monday shoppers be warned. Scammers are waiting to pounce on naive internet shoppers.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, cyber thieves target scams based on their knowledge of the hottest gifts on the market, leading to fake contests on social media sites, dangerous links, and texts and emails that could lead to identity theft.

Other recommendations to stay safe include making sure a website is legitimate and secure before ordering, install anti-virus software and a firewall, pay for credit card protection and print records of online transactions.

“When you see a post on someone’s wall or a tweet from a colleague, treat it the same as an unsolicited email,” says Chester Wisniewski, an expert with Sophos, on their blog. “Don’t click it. Go to the real source and, if necessary, contact the sender to confirm its veracity.”

(image)U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal warned of “tricks and traps” some advertisers use to try to lure consumers into making purchases on Cyber Monday.

During a recent news conference highlighting what he calls laughable, ludicrous and deceptive ads, the Connecticut Democrat said that consumers should be on the lookout for scams.

He says scams may include overly broad advertisements, hidden fees when it’s time to check out and emailed coupons that hide the fine print in links to other websites.

It is estimated that shoppers will spend $62 billion online this holiday season – up about 15 percent from 2012, says eMarketer, a firm that tracks e-commerce.

  • Cyber Monday Deals: What To Expect

Cyber Monday is expected to be even bigger this year than last, and despite a rather glum turnout on Black Friday (compared to expectations), analysts say retailers should keep their eyes on their sites.

Online sales are expected to reach over $68 billion this year, up 15% from last year’s holiday madness. The reasons are varied, but the convenience of not having to leave the house or even the comfort of their favorite jammies is enough to keep people online today. Because so many stores began offering deals earlier this year, no one day was particularly important for businesses. Also, the added allure of “online only” sales could trigger a huge boom in site visits for many companies.

Depending on what you’re looking for, Cyber Monday is a great day to grab either Christmas gifts or the more expensive electronics you may have had your eye on all year. Here’s a bit of what you can find today; tip of the hat to Jason Henry McCormick of Moneywatch for some of the info.
