  • Sumatran Tigers: Nearly Extinct Tiger Gives Birth

The Associated Press reports that London Zoo has proudly announced that Melati, one of the few 300 Sumatran tigers left in the world, has recently given birth to three cubs earlier this week. Besides this being great news for the fast declining species, this is also happy news considering Melati’s loss in October last year when her two-week-old cub drowned in one of the zoo’s pools.

London Zoo opened their 22 million dollar Tiger Territory in March 2013 to promote Sumatran tiger breeding. Since the birth of the newborn cub last year was celebrated as the first Sumatran tiger to be born in 17 years, its death was a devastating blow for London Zoo.

The zookeepers have not yet interacted with the baby cubs, and the new family is also not available to the public as of yet. The proud papa Jae Jae can be seen roving about the main tiger area of London Zoo, away from the cubs as well. Zookeepers closely monitor interaction with Mama and the babies via a hidden camera, and are pleased with the interaction. So far, the cubs have opened their eyes, taken their first steps, and have already begun to develop a bit of personality.

Melati rarely leaves her babies’ side; she is known to have a nervous disposition and appears very watchful over the three. Zookeepers are still not sure of how the drowned cub ventured into the pool, but they have drained the pool, built a conservancy for the family to explore and closely monitor the affairs remotely 24/7.

The cubs were born on Monday at 12:28, 12:59 and 1:18. They have yet to be named or have their gender identified. One spunky cub has been nicknamed Trouble for its ambitious exploring and teasing of its siblings.

  • Joe Girardi: Yanks And Cubs To Fight It Out?

Joe Girardi is reportedly about to have two teams battling it out over who gets him, if sources are correct, and it could end up being very beneficial to him.

After a slow season, the Cubs have fired manager Dale Sveum and are prepared to make a nice offer to Girardi in the hopes that he’ll come build up some fan love in Chicago. New York, however, will do what they can to keep him, and since his contract isn’t up until October 31st, the Yankees haven’t said whether they’ll give him permission to have a sit-down with the Cubs.

”He knows we’d like to have him stay and continue as manager of the New York Yankees as we move forward,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. ”I feel we hired a good one. He’s been a world champion player for us. He’s been a coach, a broadcaster and obviously a world champion manager. So we’ve benefited from having him and we’d like to do that going forward, but we’ll have to speak with him and see how it plays out.”

Because the Cubs are trying to boost fan attendance at games–which has gone downhill over the past five seasons–it may be more financially viable for them to hire Girardi than it would be to try and woo some free-agent players. Girardi, who currently is under contract for $3 million a year, may be offered between $4 and $5 million to come to Chicago.

  • Orioles Trade Strop, Arrieta to Cubs

Orioles Trade Strop, Arrieta to Cubs

The Baltimore Orioles today announced a major trade deal with the Chicago Cubs. According to an MLB.com report, the Orioles have received pitcher Scott Feldman and catcher Steve Clevenger, who was optioned to the Triple-A Orioles affiliate Norfolk Tides. In return, the Cubs received pitchers Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop, along with $338,100 in international signing slot bonuses.

“He’s a proven veteran starting pitcher, and he should help stabilize our rotation in the second half of the season,” said Dan Duquette, VP of operations at the Orioles. “We are going to be able to make another addition to our rotation hopefully in another week when [Wei-Yin] Chen rejoins the club, so I think at this stage, let’s see what Feldman and Chen do for us,”

Feldman will make his debut as an Oriole on Wednesday night against the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander is a veteran who pitched for the Texas Rangers for seven years before joining the Cubs this year. Feldman has gone 7-6 with a 3.46 ERA so far this season with the Cubs.

Both Strop and Arrieta have had disappointing starts to their season. Strop has gone 0-3 with a 7.25 ERA, and Arrieta currently holds a 1-2 record with a 7.23 ERA this season.

“It’s kind of sad to leave an organization I’ve been with since I was drafted,” said Arrieta. “A lot of special moments and great relationships that I’ve formed when I was with the Orioles, and that’s what I’ll miss the most. But there’s opportunity for me in Chicago, and I’m going to try to make the most of it.

“I wouldn’t say [it’s] a completely fresh start. But I’ve learned a lot and continue to grow as a player and a person. My numbers haven’t been what everybody expected, what I expected, but there’s so much room for me to grow, and I know that’s what Chicago wants from me. They want me to have an opportunity and be able to continue to progress and reach my potential.”

  • Wife Douses Husband With Beer At Cubs Game

What happens when you accidentally spill your beer on your wife while trying to protect her from a wayward ball to the face? If you’re one man, you get a drink dumped on you.

A woman was caught on camera throwing her (expensive) beer on her hubs while they were watching a Cubs game on Sunday after he did just that. Apparently the woman was upset at getting wet and said she couldn’t resist a little payback.

“I just got livid,’ the woman, identified only as Ellen, said. ‘And I took my beer and splooshed it in his face. I figured if I’m wet, he might as well be wet too.”

Her husband took it in stride; the couple was all smiles after the game.
