Middle Finger Emoji to Address the Most Common Emotion Felt When Texting

The Unicode Consortium, the group that regulates the industry standard for emoji and other types of text across multiple platforms (like iOS and Android), has just announced the Unicode Standard version 7.0, which consists of 2,834 new characters – including approximately 250 new emoji.

Also “many other symbols, and 23 new lesser-used and historic scripts, as well as character additions to many existing scripts.”

But what’s important to you is that you’re getting some new emoji. Not right away – manufacturers will have to adopt the new suggested emojis and decide on their own design for them – but down the road you’ll have some wonderful new options for visual messaging.

And most importantly, a one-click way to tell your friends to f*ck off.

Emojipedia has compiled a giant list of the new emojis, and we’ve looked over it. Without a doubt, here’s the most important addition:

Reversed Hand With Middle Finger Extended

Yes, it’s happening you guys. Say hello to the flip-the-bird emoji, destined to be the most popular character since that creepy googly-eyed pile of poo. Can you think of a more ubiquitous emotion felt during texting than wanting to give someone the middle finger? I sure can’t. Maybe I should get new friends.

You’re also getting a “Raised Hand With Part Between Middle And Ring Fingers” so you can live long and prosper.

Oh, and don’t forget about “fax icon”! That’s…necessary.

  • Wikipedia Gives Its Mobile Site New Type, Layout

Free online encyclopedia Wikipedia has just announced a major redesign to their mobile site, which brings features that have been tested in beta to the masses.

This includes a navigational update to help with content exploration and a typographical update to help with readability.

“The new navigation system is designed to make mobile features and settings more discoverable, paving the way for the addition of new features. In the coming months, the mobile team will continue to experiment with and build contributory features. Whether it’s uploading a photo (as with the Wiki Loves Monuments Android app), watching changes to articles, or even editing, we want anyone to be able to pitch in and help make Wikipedia even better,” says Associate Product Manager Maryana Pinchuk.

Tapping the three lines next to the search bar on the home page reveals your settings and the ability to go to a random article. You’ll also notice that the categories look a bit different after a search, allowing users to reveal and retract with a single click.

Wikipedia is really excited about the typography changes, which brings news fonts which they say offer “improved device compatibility, ease of scannability and reading, and, more generally, to better fit the high quality standards to which all Wikimedia projects strive.” Wikipedia says that fonts have been shown to influence a readers perception and comprehension of information. They also say that this is not the end of the typography updates.

With this update, Wikipedia says they closer to reaching their goal of 4 billion pageviews a month by June 2013.

  • CAPS LOCK DAY TRENDS ON TWITTER, BUT NOT IN CAPS

IT’S INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY, WHICH, THE VERY IDEA OF, LENDS ITSELF TO AN EFFECTIVE TWITTER TREND. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE’S SOMETHING MISSING IN REGARDS TO THE HASHTAG BEING USED TO PROMOTE THE EVENT, WHICH IS ONE OF THE HOLIEST OF DAYS FOR THOSE WHO USE KEYBOARDS WITH REGULARITY. TODAY’S “HOLIDAY” ESSENTIALLY GIVES YOU AN EXCUSE TO YELL AT EVERYONE YOU COMMUNICATE WITH, AT LEAST USING TEXT-BASED COMMUNICATION

WHILE IT WOULD PROBABLY BE OBNOXIOUS TO FINISH THIS POST IN CAPITAL LETTERS, TODAY’S CELEBRATION GIVES ME THE NECESSARY LEEWAY, SO STOP COMPLAINING. IN REGARDS TO THE DAY’S SIGNIFICANCE, CAPS LOCK DAY WAS STARTED IN 2000 BY DEREK ARNOLD, AND WHILE IT WAS INTENDED TO MAKE FUN OF CERTAIN LANGUAGE CONVENTIONS — AND THE PEOPLE WHO ADHERE TO THEM, APPARENTLY — IT’S GROWN TO BECOME AN INTERNET MEME. THERE’S ALSO A SITE, REMINDING PEOPLE OF THEIR OBLIGATIONS.

THE ORIGINAL DATE FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THE TRUE EFFECTIVENESS OF CAPITAL LETTERS, BUT IT WAS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE JUNE, 28TH, AS A WAY TO HONOR THE LATE BILLY MAYS. CONCERNING THE MOTIVATIONS OF CREATING A CAPS LOCK DAY, ARNOLD SAYS:

International Caps Lock Day is in fact a testament to the small mindedness of certain Western individuals: the majority of the world’s population writes in scripts which have no concept of letter casing. Therefore it is advised to laugh at anyone who invokes this day as an excuse to dismiss local typographical conventions: they are simply making an ass out of themselves.

ALTHOUGH I WAS TEMPTED TO CONVERT THAT TEXT BLOCK INTO CAPITAL LETTERS, I FIGURED A RESPITE WAS DESERVED, PROVIDED YOU EVEN MADE IT THIS FAR. NEEDLESS TO SAY, SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE AREA CAPS LOCK DAY IS MOST CELEBRATED, ESPECIALLY TWITTER. THE REASONS FOR THE CELEBRATION, HOWEVER, IS THE REASON CAPS LOCK DAY WAS INTENDED:

You’d think #capslockday would be in all caps. 59 minutes ago via TweetDeck · powered by @socialditto
