  • Eddie Murphy: No Remake of “Coming to America”

This is the 25th year anniversary for the 80’s classic, “Coming to America”, and sometimes, on special anniversaries, there’s talk of a sequel or remake. But not this time, sorry fans.

According to People, the problem is not lack of motivation, it could be fear of the lawsuit. When Eddie Murphy went on Arsenio Hall’s show on Tuesday night, the pair, neither of which has aged at all since the making of the iconic movie, discussed the aftermath of the film.

“When Coming to America came out it was a bunch of lawsuits.”, Murphy said, adding,”There was some dude who was claiming he was the prince. I’d be out in the club and this African dude would roll up and say, ‘I am the real prince! You stole my life from me! And I want my money! I’ll kill you!’ ”

Yep, that would be enough to put the kabash on a sequel idea. But what about this feud that, well, no one knew or cared about? According to E!, there were rumors of a massive feud between Murphy, who played African Prince Akeem, and Hall, who was his sometimes-trusty sidekick, Semmi (Remember the hot tub scene?)

Stories began surfacing in March, apparently, that the two had suffered a grand falling-out. But the rumors were not true, if the two themselves are to be believed.

Right at the beginning of the interview, Hall addressed the rumors, “We stopped our bitter feud, just for tonight.”, he said. Murphy seemed confused about what he was talking about, or was probably just playing along.

Hall informed him that the the tabliods had printed the stories, and said, “Yes, the tabloids said we’re having a bitter feud.”

“Oh, I don’t read the tabloids. I really don’t, I don’t read any of that s–t,” Murphy simply said. I guess that’s how one would keep their confidence up as an actor!

  • Feud Between Arsenio Hall & Eddie Murphy?

On Wednesday night’s episode of the Arsenio Hall Show, guest, co-star, and old friend, Eddie Murphy, appeared as Hall’s guest. Hall and Murphy starred together in the 1988 comedy in which Murphy plays an African king who treks to New York to find his future wife. Hall plays the king’s wing man in the film. This year will mark the the 25th anniversary of Coming to America.

The pair started off the conversation by “clearing the air,” when Hall told the audience, “We stopped our bitter feud, just for tonight.” Surprised Murphy asked, “What feud?” Arsenio went on to explain that rumors began last March that Murphy declined to appear on Hall’s late night show. Murphy seemed unfazed by the news and told Hall, “..I don’t read that s***.”

However, fans of the classic movie won’t be very happy – it seems that there definitely won’t be a future sequel. Murphy said last night that after filming Coming to America, he had an encounter one night with an African man claiming to be the real prince. Murphy related that the man threatened to kill him if Murphy didn’t give him ‘his money,’ and that the actor had ‘stolen his life.’ Apparently, there were many controversies and lawsuits over the film, according to Murphy – too many to make a sequel, anyway.

Arsenio and Eddie discussed other things, too, reminiscing about the time Hall forced sober Murphy to drink alcohol – something he never does – and Murphy ended the night talking to a dog.

  • Coming To America Sequel: Eddie Murphy And Arsenio Hall Discuss [Video]

Eddie Murphy’s career, as many would argue, has certainly gone downhill since he had kids, and has not been making the kind of movies that he used to.

Maybe a Coming To America sequel is exactly the thing that the veteran comedic actor needs in order to get his career back on track.

The comedic genius of the 1980s was reunited with Arsenio Hall on his talk show, and the pair of actors who starred in the popular film together discussed the idea of a sequel.

Coming To America was released 25 years ago in 1988, and fans continue to wonder if Murphy and Hall will ever reunite to reprise their roles in the classic comedy.

The film told the story of Akeem, an African prince who travels to Queens, New York, in order to find a bride, which turns out to be a hilarious situation of course. Arsenio Hall played his assistant, and the person who was supposed to keep an eye him, making sure he did the right things.

Through the interview, it seems that the two actors put to rumors to rest that a Coming To America sequel will be coming, but for an interesting reason. It seems that, according to Eddie Murphy, “When Coming to America came out it was a bunch of lawsuits.”

Murphy continued to talk about multiple people approaching him on the street who told him that they were the real prince, and that they wanted his money, even threatening to kill him. That certainly makes things interesting, and we all know why we never saw a sequel from the hit film now.

If a Coming To America sequel were ever to be made, it seems like this would be the time, but they do not look to be involved with a sequel to the film, due to the the complications that arose following the release of the first film.

  • Eddie Murphy Appears on “Arsenio”

    Eddie Murphy Appears on “Arsenio”

It’s been 25 years since audiences roared with laughter while watching Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall in the hit comedy, Coming to America. The duo, who also appeared together in Harlem Nights, chatted about their experiences on Arsenio’s new talk show last night.

Hall even asked Murphy why they never did a sequel to Coming to America. Murphy responded in his token African Prince voice how the lawsuits came pouring in after his portrayal of Prince Akeem. “When Coming to America came out, there were a bunch of lawsuits…with guys who claimed to be this and that. I’d be up in the club and this African dude would run up on me like, ‘I am the real prince! You stole my life from me!”

Eddie Murphy was a regular guest on Hall’s hit talk show back in the 1990s, appearing a total of six different times. So people started wondering where Eddie was when Hall started his new talk show simply called Arsensio, back in September. Rumors began to spread that the friends had some kind of falling out. However, Hall put the rumors to rest when he announced that his old buddy would be back on the couch in order to promote his new album “9” which features a single with Snoop Dogg called “Red Light.”

Hall released a statement last week announcing Murphy’s appearance. “The questions I have been asked more times than any others since announcing I would be coming back to late night are ‘Will Eddie be a guest?’ and ‘When is Eddie stopping by?’ The answers are ‘yes’ and ‘November 19.’ I can’t wait to get one of my best friends back on the couch and maybe he’ll even sing a little reggae for us.”

Here’s a clip from the hilarious interview:
