  • Heisman Finalists: The Final Six Candidates Have Been Announced

Typically at this stage of the Heisman race, the amount of players eligible to win the award is narrowed down to five. However, this year, for the second time in history, there are six Heisman finalists to close out a very exciting year in college football.

The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the most impressive player in college football, and there are several players attempting to make the case that they are the best this year.

As a result, it was too hard for the committee to narrow the finalists down to five, and the top 6 are filled with top players from the SEC, and two players that will be seen in the national championship. It is the second time in history that there are six finalists, and the first time since it happened in 1994.

The six finalists for the Heisman Trophy are Jameis Winston, AJ McCarron, Johnny Manziel, Andre Williams, Tre Mason, and Jordan Lynch. As usual, the Heisman finalists have been narrowed down to primarily quarterbacks, along with two running backs.

The college bowl schedule was also released today, letting all of the teams and fans know where the teams would be heading during the off-season, and when the games would be played.

Andre Williams, who is talked about less than any of the others, plays for Boston College. He ran for 2,102 yards, and 17 touchdowns, including racking up 200 or more yards five times during this season.

Northern Illinois continued to make their case for a BCS bowl behind the play of Jordan Lynch, but fell short and was not able to defeat Bowling Green. However, Lynch has been impressive throughout the season and threw for 2,676 yards and 23 touchdowns, and ran for another 1,881 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also finished seventh in the Heisman voting last year.

Tre Mason has been able to make his case for the Heisman over the past couple of games especially, helping his Auburn Tigers defeat Alabama in the Iron Bowl, and then gave a very impressive performance against Missouri in the SEC Championship Game, running for 304 yards, and scoring 3 touchdowns.

Mason has not had the attention on him as much as some of the others this season, and was somewhat in disbelief when he heard the news. Upon hearing he was invited, he said “For me to be invited to the Heisman ceremony, I am honored and blessed. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. This is an honor for all of them also.”

Jameis Winston is the leading contender for the Heisman Trophy, as the quarterback of a Florida State team that has demolished their competition throughout the season. He is also heading to the BCS National Championship with a record of 13-0, easily handling their opponents throughout the entire sesaon.

Winston ranks first in the NCAA in passing efficiency, passing yards per attempt and set the NCAA record for passing touchdowns by a freshman. He was also investigated for sexual assault recently for an incident that occurred almost a year go, and while he was not charged with anything, it has been a case that has been getting him a lot of attention recently. Of course, off the field drama is no stranger to Heisman hopefuls, with Reggie Bush and Cam Newton both experiencing similar situations in recent years.

Joining Winston are two of the top quarterbacks in the SEC, AJ McCarron of Alabama, and Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M, who won the award last year. Johnny Manziel was very impressive during the first part of the season, including almost beating Alabama, and leading a blowout against Vanderbilt. However, his Aggies lost the last few games of the season, hurting his chances of winning the award.

AJ McCarron has 2 national championships already in the past three years, and much of the country is well aware of what has been done at Alabama already in the past 3 years. However, after their loss to Auburn, they will not be heading to the national championship this year. Despite his success with the team, this is the first time that McCarron has been invited as one of the Heisman finalists.

After the six Heisman finalists have been announced, it is hard to know who will come away with the award for sure, although Jameis Winston has certainly been the favorite recently. His Florida State Seminoles will be playing against the Auburn Tigers in the BCS National Championship on January 6th in Pasadena, California.

  • Capital One Bowl: Gamecocks Will Face the Badgers

With the college bowl schedule released yesterday, the South Carolina Gamecocks found out that they are headed to Orlando to face the Wisconsin Badgers in the Capital One Bowl. The Capital One Bowl is the best non-BCS bowl and will be played at 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day. South Carolina comes in at #9 in the BCS standings and Wisconsin is #19.

    South Carolina Gamecocks

The Gamecocks finished second in the SEC-East with a 10-2 record. Some notable wins for the Gamecocks this year include beating two teams that were ranked in the Top 10 at the time the games were played. Clemson, an ACC team the Gamecocks beat 31-17, was ranked #6 going into rivalry week. The win over Clemson marked South Carolina’s fifth win in a row in the rivalry and was the Gamecocks 18th consecutive win at home. The other Top 10 team the Gamecocks beat was the Missouri Tigers, who played in the SEC Championship Game. Missouri was ranked #5 when the Gamecocks faced them.

There are quite a few standout players for the Gamecocks, including defensive player Jadeveon Clowney, who is projected to be one of the top picks in the NFL draft. Even though Clowney has been a force for the Gamecocks since he arrived in Columbia, he was promoted to celebrity status after the Gamecocks’ bowl game against Michigan last year. Clowney delivered one of the nastiest hits in college football history, which was featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10. See the video below.

Another Gamecocks player that is certainly worth mentioning is senior quarterback Connor Shaw. This dual-threat quarterback has completed 158 passes for 2135 yards this season, which includes 21 touchdown passes and just one interception. Shaw is arguably the best quarterback in South Carolina Gamecocks history. Shaw is USC’s all-time winningest quarterback with a 26-5 record, which includes a perfect record at home.

    Wisconsin Badgers

The Wisconsin Badgers finished up the season 9-3. This will be the first time since the 2009-2010 bowls that Wisconsin hasn’t been selected for a BCS bowl–the Badgers have gone to the Rose Bowl the past three years. With losses to Ohio State, Arizona State and Penn State, this just wasn’t the year for the Badgers. Notable wins for the Badgers include beating then #19 ranked Northwestern and then #25 ranked Minnesota. Neither of these teams were ranked at the end of the season.

A couple of players the Gamecocks will have to watch out for are quarterback Joel Stave and running back Melvin Gordon. Stave, a sophomore, had 2,414 passing yards and 20 touchdowns this season. Gordon, also a sophomore, rushed for 1,466 yards this season for an average of 122.2 rushing yards per game. Gordon had 12 touchdowns for the season.

The Badgers are currently one-point favorites over the Gamecocks, which may come as a surprise to many fans. What’s your prediction for the Wisconsin-South Carolina Capital One Bowl game? Add your comments below.

  • Jameis Winston Will Not Be Charged In Sexual Assault Case

Jameis Winston has been under fire recently for allegedly raping a young woman who accused him of the assault, which happened about a year ago. The investigation has finally come to a close, and Winston will not be charged in the case of sexual assault.

It appears that there was simply not enough evidence to charge the 19-year-old Heisman candidate and one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Jameis Winston, the quarterback for Florida State, is likely headed for the BCS National Championship.

Winston would have faced charges of sexual battery, although there is not enough evidence to charge him in the case. William Meggs, the state attorney for Florida’s Second Judicial Court, said of the case “We have a duty as prosecutors to determine if each case has a reasonable likelihood of conviction. After reviewing the facts in this case, we do not feel that we can reach those burdens.”

While the fact that he is a superstar athlete could have helped his case, the state attorney said that they try to treat everyone the same, and they have a history of doing that. Evidence was collected at the time of the incident to suggest that Winston was involved, but he claims that he had consensual sex with the accuser.

It was reported last month that Jameis Winston was being investigated for sexual assault but the real question is, why would it take the police this long to accuse Winston of the crime? The report also detailed a description of a man that is much shorter than Winston, which could have also helped his case. He has denied the allegations to a crime that occurred on December 7th of 2012, and since he was not investigated until now, it seems to hard to link him to the case.

Jameis Winston has already won ACC player of the year, and as Florida State gets ready to play against Duke for the ACC title on Saturday, he will continue to make his case for the Heisman Trophy as well, given to the most outstanding player in college football. Of course, this is not the first time that a Heisman candidate has been under fire for doing something negative off the field, and just in the past few years, Reggie Bush and Cam Newton received similar attention.

Throughout the investigation, Jameis Winston had refused to comment on the situation, and has remained the starting quarterback for the Seminoles.

  • Tim Tebow May Have A Career In TV

Tim Tebow May Have A Career In TV

His NFL career may be over, but that doesn’t mean football will no longer be a part of Tim Tebow’s life.

Though many fans, and Tebow himself, would have liked to see him in the NFL again, he hasn’t received the call from any NFL team since he was let go from the New England Patriots in August. Not even when so many teams could have used a quarterback this season.

The former NFL quarterback is the cause of a TV bidding war. Multiple sources told The Big Lead that many channels, including ESPN, CBS Sports, and Fox Sports, are vying for Tebow to be the newest analyst for college football. ESPN already has a show designed for Tebow on their ESPN SEC Network.

It is expected that come January, Tebow’s phone will be ringing with offers to become a college football analyst.

ESPN will debut its SEC Network in August 2014. The network has plans for its own version of “College Gameday.” Tebow is one of three names that are being thrown around to co-host the show. Alabama grad Rece Davis and “the voice of the South” Paul Finebaum have also been mentioned. ESPN is still looking for a fourth co-host for the show.

And getting Tebow to the SEC Network could be the ticket for the network to get picked up by multiple cable providers.

CBS Sports wants Tebow so bad they’re willing to make major changes to their pre-game show to get him.

If Fox can snag Tebow, they’re looking to have him analyze both college football and NFL games.

Personally, I think the Heisman Trophy winner and former Florida Gator would be a great get for any network looking to add to or create a show.

Though it looks like some people disagree with me.

  • BCS Standings: Things Are Shaping Up As The Season Comes To A Close

The BCS standings have been released, and with only one more week to go in the season, things are finally starting to fall into place. After an incredibly dramatic finish between Alabama and Auburn, this week’s BCS standings also feature a new #1 team for the first time in a long time.

The bowl games are shaping up to have quite the excitement in the coming weeks, with top teams losing and a variety of scenarios possible.

The BCS standings have been significantly changing in recent weeks and with Auburn’s big win over Alabama, the top team that has won the past two national championships may have been taken out of the running for this year’s title game.

For the first time in a long time, a new team is sitting at the #1 spot, and the new team is Florida State. Florida State has been dominant throughotu the season, and looks to be headed to the national championship shortly.

The bowl projections, and where teams will be headed is narrowing down slowly, but the fate of several teams around the country will be determined shortly. The conference championships are coming up next weekend, and after Saturday’s games play out, college football fans will have a better idea of where their favorite teams will be headed during the bowl games.

Here is a full list of this week’s standings.

    (image)

Ohio State is also closely behind now at the #2 spot, however they have to get past a tough Michigan State team in order to make the title, and that could be a difficult task to overcome. If Michigan State is to win the Big Ten Championship Game against Ohio State, then they would be headed to the Rose Bowl for the first time in many years. After a hard fought season, a Rose Bowl berth for the Spartans is something that they could look forward to, and are deserving of the game. Michigan State’s only loss this season is to Notre Dame, an out of conference game, and anyone who saw the game would argue that MSU should have won the game if it were not for the way the game was officiated.

Even if Ohio State were to win, some people feel that the SEC is such a strong conference that Alabama, Auburn, or possibly even Missouri might be more deserving of a shot at the title. Missouri’s coach Gary Pinkel said, for example, “Any one-loss team in the SEC (should be considered) just because of the strength of schedule. Hopefully that will be taken into consideration.”

Alabama has been one of the top teams for several years, and as the SEC continues to dominate, especially in last week’s BCS standings, it is not hard to understand the argument that is being made for the top-ranked SEC teams, and their chances of going to the title game.

With the current BCS standings, it seems that Florida State has their spot in the title game secured, however on Ohio State’s end, things are a bit different. Ohio State barely beat a struggling Michigan team over the weekend, and after Auburn’s upset, they might have what it takes to win the SEC championship game, and proceed on to the national championship if Ohio State were to lose especially.

The fate of the BCS standings is coming down to the final week, and the results of the the Big Ten Championship and the SEC Championship will have a big impact on who goes to the BCS Championship, depending on who wins, and how each team plays.

  • BCS Standings: FSU is the New Number One

For the first time in years, it looks like the SEC won’t have a dog in the fight in the BCS National Championship Game. After then #4 Auburn beat #1 Alabama as the last possible second on Saturday, Florida State moved up to the #1 spot and Ohio State moved to #2 in the BCS standings that were released Sunday evening. Unless Ohio State loses to Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday, this will be the first time that the BCS-CG hasn’t had an SEC representative since 2005.

The BCS standings over the past few weeks have seen a lot of switcheroos at the #2 and #3 spots, and because of FSU’s strength of schedule, it looked like the Seminoles would get stuck on the outside looking in at times. That all changed after Alabama lost to Auburn, though. As long as FSU beats Duke in the ACC Championship Game on Saturday, they will be sitting pretty for the BCS Championship Game that will be played on January 6, 2014.

In an interview FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher gave to ESPN, it doesn’t sound like his team is too concerned with looking ahead, though–as with the rest of the season, the Seminoles take things one game at a time and whatever happens, happens. “We’ve been able to focus, not pay attention to the outside things and worry about anything,” Fisher said. “We can’t worry about where we’re ranked and what goes on. We’ve just got to worry about preparing and playing, and that’s all we tell our guys, and hopefully we can do that at least one more week right here.”

Check out the updated BCS standings below.

    (image)

Even though things aren’t looking good for the SEC as far as the BCS-CG is concerned right now, the Buckeyes will certainly have their hands full with #10 Michigan State on Saturday. Considering that Ohio State barely–and we mean barely–scraped by an unranked Michigan on Saturday, their berth in the BCS-CG isn’t nearly as secure as FSU’s.

Things will get even more interesting for Ohio State thanks to the brawl that led to two of their players being ejected during the Michigan game. One of the players, Marcus Hall, left the field with two middle fingers raised in the air. Head coach Urban Meyer says he won’t suspend either of his ejected players for the Big Ten Championship Game, but the Big Ten will have the final say in the matter. Considering Hall’s extreme behavior, it is hard to imagine that the Big Ten won’t slap him on the wrist and suspend him for at least part of the game.

  • Iron Bowl Upset Sees Auburn Defeat No. 1 Alabama

Last night was one of those games that will be talked about for many years to come. If only for the unpredictable (and if you happen to hate the Crimson Tide, absolutely hilarious) finish. The No. 1 Alabama had practically already started packing their bags. “Atlanta, here we come!” But the No. 4 Auburn Tigers did not plan on going out quietly. As it turned out, they weren’t going out at all.

The local rivalry made many suspect they were in for a great match up. But no one could have predicted the level of drama would be as high as it was. It was the sort of game where a 99-yard “Hail Mary” return by Amari Cooper that ended at 21-21 tie in the fourth quarter would not be the play of the night. Oh, the play would star Alabama….just probably not in the manner they would have preferred.

In the closing seconds of the game, there was already the expectation it was going into overtime. Kicker Cody Foster had missed crucial opportunities earlier in the game, leading to the decision to use Adam Griffith for a literally last second 57-yard field goal attempt.

There are kickers who have missed that last second field goal and failed to give their team a major win. However, no one wants to be the kicker whose failure results in a catch that turns into a 100-yard return for a touchdown. Chris Davis performed an impossible task to help Auburn snatch victory away in a flash. Meanwhile, Alabama players stood stunned on the field and fans gaped in the stands.

“Hey Alabama! Hey Alabama! Hey Alabama, we just beat the Hell out of you!”

The jubilant Tigers fans could not contain themselves as they flooded the field, singing and dancing and rubbing the surprising finish the faces of their rivals. Social media lit up with reactions. Some tweeted disbelief. Others death threats. Poor Cody Foster was forced to go into Twitter-hiding, having deleted his name from his twitter and removed his picture in hopes of avoiding a huge wave of backlash over his failure.

As disappointed and angry as some fans may be, it was understood by cooler heads that sometimes the odds just aren’t in your favor.

“Sometimes luck just isn’t on your side,” quarterback AJ McCarron said, his disappointment highly visible.

Luck was a key factor to be sure, but sometimes it’s about space and opportunity. Atlanta’s SEC Championship will be a cat-fight as both sides go by the name of Tigers. Which side will reign supreme is anyone’s guess, though a last minute upset may have taught sports pundits to question the “sure thing”.

  • USC vs. UCLA: The Case for Ed Orgeron

This Saturday is a big day for college football rivalries: Ohio St. vs. Michigan, Clemson vs. South Carolina, and Alabama vs. Auburn. While perhaps the Alabama vs. Auburn game is the most important football game of the year, the USC vs. UCLA game does not lack its own drama and import.

There are multiple things on the line in the Southern California match-up. Firstly, both teams are fighting to finish the season on a strong note and contend for the best bowl game possible. USC comes into the game having won 6 of their last 7 games after going 3-2 under former coach Lane Kiffin. UCLA, on the other-hand, comes into the game having gone 3-3 in their last 6 games after starting 5-1 and at one time being ranked in the top 10 nationally. Considering both teams compete head-to-head in the PAC-12 South division, one can be sure that their respective bowl game selections will highly depend on the outcome of this game.

Secondly, personal pride is on the line. Cody Kessler, quarterback for USC, stated that “When you come to USC, that’s the first thing you think of, is playing UCLA,” displaying the intensity of the rivalry between the two teams. The crosstown rivalry will feature superb athletes on both sides, each with something to prove.

For USC, the bulk of the offense will come from their backfield. Trojans runningback Javorius Allen has scored 3 touchdowns in 3 of the previous 4 games, leading a core of tailbacks that is currently averaging 177 rush yards per game. This stat should concern Bruins’s fans due to UCLA’s difficulties in containing the run against big-name foes such as Stanford, Oregon, and Arizona.

For UCLA, the offensive attack will rest in the hands of sophomore, dual-threat quarterback Brett Hundley. While Hundley’s total pass yardage is down from his 2012 effort (2,637 yards versus 3,745 yards), his QB rating is up 8 points and his ground-attack has shown improvement. If UCLA wants to win Saturday’s match-up, however, Hundley will most likely have to rely on his arm and attack a USC secondary which struggled against the spread-offenses of Arizona and Arizona State.

Perhaps the most important thing on the line in Saturday’s rivalry, though, is the coaching future of USC’s Ed Orgeron. When Lane Kiffin was fired 5 games into the season, USC decided to turn to Ed Orgeron, the former head coach of Ole Miss who had come to campus with Lane Kiffin in 2010. While Orgeron was named as USC’s interim coach, he has made a tremendous case to become USC’s next head coach, leading the Trojans to a 6-1 record over their past 7 games and once again bringing national attention and big-time recruits to USC.

With a victory against rival UCLA on Saturday, Orgeron would make USC hard-pressed to select someone else as the next head coach. That being said, with a loss to UCLA Orgeron’s fate would almost certainly be sealed. USC has already interviewed Jack Del Rio, the current head coach of the Denver Broncos. Along with Del Rio, other big-name coaches such as Kevin Sumlin, James Franklin, and Chris Petersen have expressed interest or been targeted by USC in their search.

Whatever the outcome, the game is sure to thrill. USC is riding the momentum of turning a doomed season into a tremendously successful one, while UCLA is trying to salvage an extremely strong beginning of the season by securing 9 victories and punching their ticket to a prime-time bowl game. Due to UCLA’s struggles against the run and USC’s Cinderella-esque season behind Ed Orgeron, the edge goes to USC, but only slightly.

  • BCS Standings: Top 3 Unchanged, SEC Continues To Dominate

The BCS standings have been updated yet again, and without a change in the top 3 spots, Alabama and Florida State continue to show that they are the top two teams in the nation.

However, Ohio State is making their case as well, and with big games coming up against Michigan and Michigan State, they have a chance at the championship game as well.

The BCS standings have been changing a lot lately, and it was looking like Oregon or Baylor might even have a chance at the national championship with impressive wins in the next couple of weeks, but after they both lost on Saturday, it is not looking good for either of them.

Alabama and Florida State have been dominating their opponents all year, and it seems to be set for them to play in the championship, but as the season comes to an end, it is hard to know what will happen.

Auburn and Missouri are also in the top 5, as the SEC has continued to dominate once again this year. South Carolina and Texas A&M could easily shake things up as well during rivalry week, as they have big games against Clemson and Missouri, respectively.

While Alabama and Florida State are still undefeated with 11-0 records, Ohio State is right up there with them, and will have an interesting meeting with Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship. If Michigan State wins, they will go to the Rose Bowl, something that has not happened for the Spartans in a long time, who is undefeated in the Big Ten this year.

However, if Ohio State wins, and beats Michigan to close out the season next week, they will likely play for the National Championship. Jerry Palm, a BCS analyst said that if Alabama or Florida State are to slip up, then Ohio State would move up into the top spot, but speaking on the likelihood of Missouri or Auburn jumping into the equation, he said “The coaches in particular are not going to allow an undefeated to not play for the title. They understand how hard it is to finish unbeaten. It hasn’t happened yet in the BCS and there is no reason to think it would this year.

Almost anything is likely to happen with the top 5 teams in the BCS standings as the season comes to a close, but the top 3 teams continue to give themselves more separation. Auburn and Missouri sit at #4 and #5, and a SEC championship win could potentially send either of them to the championship.

The bowl projections are being set up with all sorts of scenarios already, and what happens in the SEC will likely be the deciding factor, since the SEC currently 3 teams in the top 5.

Does anyone have any big predictions? What will happen once this wild season finally comes to a close? Discuss.

As the top teams around the league head into rivalry week, anything is likely to happen with the BCS standings, and they all better play their best if they want to have a chance to play in the national championship.

  • Aaron Murray Leaves The Game With A Knee Injury

Aaron Murray, quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs, suffered an injury during their win against Kentucky yesterday.

Of course, Georgia had no trouble with defeating the Kentucky Wildcats, but after leaving the game with a knee injury, Murray is likely to be out for the rest of the season.

Georgia is not one of the top teams in the SEC by any means this season, but behind their star in Aaron Murray, they are certainly able to match up against anyone in the conference.

With an injury to his left knee, Murray needed assistance to leave the field late in the 2nd quarter.

Georgia currently sits at third place in the SEC East, behind Missouri and South Carolina. After the injury, Murray immediately motioned to the team’s medical staff that he needed help, and he was escorted to the locker room, struggling to put any weight on his left leg.

Just after halftime, it was announced that Murray would at least be missing the rest of the game, and it looks to be much more serious than that. Aaron Murray tore his ACL, and will be having a season-ending surgery, preventing him from returning to the field in his final game at home.

He had an MRI on the knee on Saturday night, and is likely to be having surgery sometime this week. He is a senior, and has had a very successful four years with the Bulldogs, starting all 52 games of his four years, and becoming the Southeastern Conference’s career leader in yards passing, touchdown passes, completions and total offense.

Georgia’s coach Mark Richt said that the injury was sickening, finding it hard to enjoy the rest of the game, and mentioned “It’s kind of a crummy feeling when you think of what Aaron is going through right now.”

He will surely be missed in the final part of the season, but Aaron Murray is grateful for the four years that he was able to spend with Georgia, and hopes to be successful in the NFL. He was 18 of 23 passes for 183 yards with four touchdowns in the game against Kentucky.

  • Auburn Hail Mary Pass Lifts Tigers Over Georgia [VIDEO]

The Georgia Bulldogs had a comeback against the #7 Auburn Tigers last night that many teams dream of, but never see. After getting beat like a drum during the first three quarters, the Bulldogs were able to rally back from a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter to pull ahead of the Tigers. Auburn got the ball back with less than two minutes to go, and just when it seemed like a victory for the Bulldogs was guaranteed, the Tigers pulled of a 73-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass that you would not believe.

Watch the video of the Auburn Hail Mary pass below:

The Tigers were 4th and 18 and had 73 yards to go with only 36 seconds left on the clock. What happened next was simply amazing. Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall took the shotgun snap and stepped into the pocket. Rather than throw to an open receiver, he threw the ball down the field into double coverage, and it looked like the ball was going to be intercepted. Sure enough, a Georgia safety got his hand on the ball. Instead of coming down with it or knocking it down, though, he tipped it right next to receiver Ricardo Louis.

“When I saw it get tipped around, I knew we still had a chance,” Marshall said. “It was a live ball. I saw that Ricardo still had his eyes on the ball. That’s something we work on at practice: keep your eyes on the ball.” After the ball was tipped, Louis reached out, bobbled the ball a couple of times and then took possession of it and ran straight to the end zone. Judging from Louis’s reaction in the end zone, he was just as shocked as the rest of us.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Louis said. “It just landed right into my hands. I saw it once it got over my shoulder. It got tipped, I lost track of it…but when I looked over my shoulders, it was right there.”

As for Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, it was easy to see he was frustrated with how the end of the game played out. After leading his team to three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to take the lead, only to see an almost guaranteed victory snatched away brought a strong reaction from the senior quarterback on the Georgia sideline. Murray was seen slamming his hat on the ground in disgust after the touchdown.

“That’s a freak play,” Murray said. “It’s like a nightmare. You try to wake up, and we are celebrating victory. It’s tough. This is going to be a tough one to get over.”

Auburn’s win over Georgia guarantees the Tigers keep their Top 10 ranking this week and kills any chance the Bulldogs had of winning the SEC-East. Now that the Bulldogs lost, Missouri will take the East unless they lose one more game. If that happens, the South Carolina Gamecocks will claim another division title.

  • Rutgers Player Jevon Tyree Says He Left Team Because of Bullying

Another week brings us another claim of bullying in football. This time, college player Jevon Tyree is saying he quit playing for Rutgers because an assistant coach was verbally abusive. This new bullying case comes to light as Dolphins player Richie Incognito was suspended for allegedly harassing a teammate to the point that he left the team.

Tyree, 19, and his parents claim that Rutgers defensive coordinator Dave Cohen called Tyree names, including “p***y” and “b**ch,” and threatened to head-butt him back in April.

“He was just trying to really make me feel as if I was soft,” Tyree said. “He got all up in my face. Coach Cohen has a lisp, so he was in my face telling me he’ll head-butt me, and he was kind of spitting in my face as he was saying it. I was just pulling my head back, looking at him like, ‘Is this guy out of his mind? Is he crazy?’”

The incident was brought to head coach Kyle Flood’s attention and Cohen was verbally reprimanded and forced to apologize the next day. Tyree says he felt “ostracized” because of what happened and decided to quit the team earlier in November.

“Basically, my dad went in there and told Coach Cohen there’s going to be no more bullying towards me,” Tyree said. “Basically that’s what it was–I was just bullied by him for no reason.” Tyree also said that he was excluded from team meetings and that the coaches wouldn’t play him at cornerback after the starter was injured–they played a wide receiver instead.

Do you think what Cohen did constitutes bullying or is Tyree making a bigger deal out of this than it is? Respond below.

Jevon Tyree stayed on with Rutgers for a few more months. He quit shortly after a dispute between his parents and athletic director Julie Hernann. Tyree’s parents decided they wanted the issue reviewed again in September. According to Hernann, they approached her regarding the incident with Cohen, but the Tyrees said they only talked to Coach Flood.

“I never talked to her. That is insane,” Mark Tyree said. “My mother has passed and I would put my hand on a stack of Bibles in her goodness. That’s ridiculous that she would even say that. That’s scary.”

During an interview Hermann said, “I’m sorry he doesn’t remember that. I was informed about what happened, what they say happened, and we investigated it. Again. Reviewed it. Kyle Flood reviewed it. That incident pre-dates me…It was dealt with then by Coach Flood…And we have not had an issue since then.”

Now that Jevon has voluntarily left the team, the Tyrees want disciplinary action brought against Cohen. “I really think disciplinary action should happen, almost to the point where (Cohen) should get fired. I really do,” Mark Tyree said. “That’s how bad it is, especially for the damage he’s done to Jevon.”

  • Alabama vs. LSU: Always A Big Deal

    Here we go again!

Number one ranked Alabama goes up against arch nemesis (#13 in BCS) LSU in tonight’s marquee game in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Now, a game pitting two highly ranked teams usually means a great game to tune into. When you add the history between these two teams, including Alabama coach, Nick Saban, who was also the former coach of LSU(2000-2004), it can take that up a few notches.

Tonight, LSU has a chance to hurt their division rival, as Alabama is trying to continue their road to a third straight National Championship. The importance of that has not left Saban unaware, “It’s probably hard for everybody to think that this is just another game,” Saban said.

Everyone has their picks for tonight’s big game as well as former Super Bowl winning coach, Tony Dungy:

And lets not forget the venerable Lee Corso, of ESPN’s College Gameday picking Alabama here:

The pressure will be on for LSU being both the underdog and going into hostile territory in Tuscaloosa. ”It’s definitely huge. I can’t even understate that,” Tigers running back Jeremy Hill said. ”It’s a big game. I’m not even going to sit here and lie to you guys. You just can’t let it overwhelm you.”

LSU coach, Les Miles and Saban have had a great rivalry since 2007. The series stands between the two at 4-3, Bama. Tonight’s game will either even it for Miles’ and LSU or give Saban’s Crimson Tide another step closer to their goal.

If tonight’s game is anything like last year’s, we are in for a treat tonight.

  • Oregon-Stanford Game Draws Fans To Thursday Football

Normally, the Thursday night games are not such a big deal, and most people do not tune in to football until Saturday afternoon. However, this week is a bit different, and college football fans are given the opportunity to see a couple of excellent match-ups, especially the face-off between a couple Pac-12 powerhouses during the Oregon-Stanford game.

Oregon and Stanford have both looked impressive throughout the season, and Oregon still remains undefeated with a record of 8-0, while Stanford is 7-1. Oregon is led by their star quarterback Marcus Mariota, who has had all sorts of Heisman Trophy buzz surrounding him and the excellent play that he has shown all year.

As both teams have continually been two of the top teams in the league in the past few years, and especially the Pac-12, each time they meet, it is a big deal for west coast football, which often does not get as much attention.

In each of the past three years, the loser of the game received its only regular season loss, and the winner of course went on to win the Pac-12 title. This year’s game is especially important as Oregon, the #2 ranked team heads south to play Stanford in their stadium, which is sold out for the game.

Stanford won last year, and will look to do the same this season with the game being in their home. Stanford was able to hold Oregon to their lowest score all season last year, with only 14 points, and this season the Ducks are averaging 55.6 points per game, which ranks them second in the nation.

Marcus Mariota experienced the only loss of his career in last year’s Oregon-Stanford game, and will look to keep it that way with a win this season. He tries to stay positive in the situation and said “When you experience (a loss), it helps you not fear it. There’s a lot of times when you go out there and you fear failure and that’s not how you should play football.” The star quarterback has not thrown an interception since their loss to Stanford in Eugene in 2012.

The Oregon-Stanford should be a very competitive one as they prepare to face off against one another late on Thursday night for those not watching on the west coast. This is the first time that two teams in the top ten have ever played on a Thursday night, making it a memorable one for the players and fans.

  • Northwestern Wounded Warrior Uniforms Create Controversy [IMAGE]

Every year since 2009 a handful of college football teams wear special Under Armour uniforms for a game as part of the Wounded Warrior Project. Northwestern University is participating this year by wearing a special uniform on November 16. Usually the Wounded Warrior uniforms are widely respected, but the uniform Northwestern will be wearing has garnered a lot of criticism.

The American flag is incorporated in all aspects of the uniform, all the way from the helmet down to the cleats. The problem? The flag parts of the uniform are splattered with blood, which some people believe is highly offensive to veterans that were injured in combat. See a video and photos of the uniform below.

    (image)

    (image)

While some football fans seem to like the uniforms, they have struck a nerve with a lot of people. In Lt. Col. Robert Bateman’s guest post on Esquire, he called the blood-spattered Wounded Warrior uniforms “disgusting” and says they aren’t cool:

“But when you add in the blood-splatters “artistically scattered” across the uniform as though it was the football player who had been shot, mortared, rocketed, or hit with an IED, that takes it from being merely crass to being outright Not. Cool. At. All.”

Lt. Col. Bateman also complained about the amount of money that will be donated to the Warrior Wounded Project from jersey sales. Northwestern is selling the jerseys for $75, but only 10 percent ($7.50) will actually be donated to the WWP.

Deadspin writer Barry Petchesky also thinks the blood spatters on the uniforms are too much–“But isn’t ‘flag covered in blood’ a little on-the-nose for something honoring a group that operates programs for injured veterans?” Petchesky also complained about the fact that Northwestern is only donating 10 percent of the jersey sales to the WWP.

It’s worth noting that while Northwestern is only donating 10 percent of jersey sales, they plan to auction off the game-worn jerseys and will be donating 100 percent of the proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project. When the South Carolina Gamecocks auctioned off their Wounded Warrior jerseys back in 2011, they raised $60,000 for the organization.

What do you think of Northwestern’s Wounded Warrior uniforms? Respond below.

  • BCS Standings: Another Switcheroo at the #2 Spot

Another week, more BCS drama. The updated BCS standings were released last night. We didn’t see a lot of movement within the Top 10, but Florida State and Oregon did switch places. Again.

Oregon had a BYE week last week and FSU played–and dominated–Miami, who was undefeated and ranked in the Top 10 before facing the Seminoles in Tallahassee. Not only did Florida State beat then #7 Miami 41-14, the Seminoles didn’t let the Hurricanes score at all in the second half, once again proving how dominant they are on both sides of the ball.

Check out the updated BCS standings below.

    (image)

Aside from FSU and Oregon switching places, Miami dropped out of the Top 10 down to the #11 spot, which allowed Clemson, Missouri and Auburn to all move up. Outside of the Top 10, the South Carolina Gamecocks moved from #14 to #12 after thoroughly thrashing Mississippi State at home. Michigan State also moved from #22 to #17 after beating Michigan 29-6.

How did your favorite team fare this week? Respond below.

With all of the switcheroos each week, fans can’t help but speculate where Florida State and Oregon will end up should both teams win out. Assuming Alabama wins out as well and retains their first place ranking and slot in the BCS Championship Game, it looks like Oregon will finish up at #2 based on the remaining SOS. They have #5 Stanford remaining on their schedule, while FSU’s toughest remaining opponent is an unranked Florida that is having a terrible season with a 4-4 record so far.

Until the four-team playoff goes into effect for the 2014-2015 season, this shows just how important it is for teams like FSU that play in weaker conferences to schedule stronger OOC opponents.

  • State Beats Michigan Thanks To Spartan Defense

Michigan State was able to bounce back from their embarrassing loss to Michigan last season, and with an excellent defensive effort, Michigan State beat Michigan in East Lansing on November 2nd.

The defense was certainly the key to the game, and the spartan defense prevented Michigan from scoring a touchdown throughout the game, holding them to only 6 points, which all came in the first half.

The game ended with a final score of 29-6. The two teams came into the game with Michigan ranked #23 and Michigan State being ranked #24, but it seems that this game put Michigan in their place, assuring that the Spartans are the better team this year.

The game was deadlocked at 6-6 for part of the first half, looking like it would be a totally defensive game like the one they played in 2012 that ended 12-10, but that changed quickly. While the defense of Michigan State continued to shine, Michigan slipped up and allowed 23 points to be scored following the 6-6 tie.

Pat Narduzzi, the defensive coordinator knows how important it is when State beats Michigan, and is willing to do whatever it takes to get his defense to get the job done. He didn’t want them getting stupid personal foul penalties and admitted that there was one, but he delivered a strong statement when saying, “We’re going to bully people — that’s the game of football.” The Michigan State defense did come out as the bully yesterday and completely shut down the Michigan offense, showing fans who the better team in Michigan truly is.

This game that resulted in State beating Michigan was a very important one for both teams, and especially Michigan State, who remains undefeated in the Big Ten. The likelihood of the team advancing to the Big Ten championship is looking even better after the win, and a record of 8-1, and their only loss coming to Notre Dame.

As if the scoreboard show for a defensive effort was not enough, Michigan State’s defense was able to beat Michigan down so hard that they ended up with -48 rushing yards by the end of the game, which of course was their worst output in the history of Michigan’s football program. Their previous low came in 1962, when the Wolverines were held to minus-46 yards by Minnesota.

This time when State beats Michigan also marks the most lopsided win in the series since a 34-0 victory in 1967. In yesterday’s game quarterback Connor Cook was 18 for 33 and passed for 252 yards, also running for one touchdown.

Michigan State is often a team that is overlooked in college football, but after they beat Michigan, they have a remaining schedule that consists of Nebraska, Northwestern, and Minnesota, and a chance to go undefeated in the Big Ten.

  • BCS Standings: Florida State Drops to #3

The updated BCS standings were released last night, and while there weren’t a lot of major changes from last week, the poll did see Florida State and Oregon switch places. Florida State dropped from the #2 spot to #3, which puts a damper on any FSU fan’s hopes of making the BCS Championship Game for now. The move wasn’t surprising, as the now #2 Oregon Ducks soundly thrashed a #12 team on Saturday, while Florida State played one of the weaker ACC teams.

Check out the updated BCS standings below.

    (image)

Florida State’s drop in the BCS standings has a lot of fans riled up, with many fans pointing out how beneficial a playoff would be. Currently, the top four teams in the BCS standings are undefeated, plus there are four other teams in the Top 25 that haven’t lost a game yet. Based on the remaining strength of schedules for the Top 4 teams, it’s highly likely that at least 3 of the 4 teams will remain undefeated.

A four-team playoff will go into effect for the 2014-2015 season, but that doesn’t do anything for the present, of course. If all teams in the Top 4 go undefeated, which two do you think should play in the championship game? Respond below.

Aside from Florida State and Oregon switching in the standings, another big change this week was #5 Missouri dropping to the #9 spot. After the #21 South Carolina Gamecocks came back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win in double overtime on Saturday night, the Missouri Tigers got their first loss of the season, which all but guarantees that their BCS-CG chances are shot.

  • Clemson’s Tajh Boyd Says Gambling Rumor Isn’t True

The past week hasn’t been so great for Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd. Not only did the Heisman hopeful have a poor showing in a 51-14 loss against Florida State this past Saturday night, some gambling rumors involving Boyd have surfaced, which he says are absolutely untrue.

The rumors surfaced over the weekend online after a person who goes by the alias Incarcerated Bob said that Boyd has more than $80,000 in gambling debt related to bets made on NFL games.

While people wouldn’t typically bat an eye at such online rumors–especially ones made by users hiding behind a screen name–Incarcerated Bob is well known in the gambling world as he often sells insider information to gamblers, which is why the rumor grew legs. According to The Clemson Insider, Incarcerated Bob said that his information “comes from direct sources in Vegas that have ties to the bookies.”

“I don’t really know where that came from,” Boyd said. “When I heard it, it was pretty shocking. That being built on top of the loss made it a rough little weekend.” Boyd tried to keep a good sense of humor about the allegations and said that he doesn’t get to watch enough NFL games to have a problem gambling on them.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was informed of the allegations prior to the Florida State game, but Boyd didn’t find out until Sunday morning when he was forced to clear up the matter.

“That just added to my beautiful Sunday,” Swinney said. “I spoke to Tajh about it, and he just shook his head. So, I have no reason to not believe Tajh Boyd. That is the only comment there is.” Swinney also added, “I have no reason not to trust him, absolutely. No question, his integrity is impeccable.” Boyd, a senior, hasn’t had any off-the-field issues in his time at Clemson and is also an ACC Academic Honor Roll member.

Boyd’s parents are outraged at the accusation. “These reports are totally false,” Carla Boyd, Tajh’s mom, said. “Please leave my son alone.” His mom said they are considering pursuing legal action, if they can find out the true identity of Incarcerated Bob.

Unfortunately for Boyd, the gambling rumors issue isn’t closed just yet. Athletic Director Dan Radakovich asked the Clemson compliance office to examine the report. The athletic department also forwarded the gambling rumors report to the Atlantic Coast Conference.
