  • Reddit Is Killing Off Reddit Talk

Reddit Is Killing Off Reddit Talk

Reddit has announced it is killing off Reddit Talk, its Clubhouse clone unveiled in April 2021.

Clubhouse was all the rage in the midst of the pandemic, spurring other social media platforms to copy its features. Reddit was one of those that jumped on the bandwagon, rolling out Reddit Talk.

In a company announcement, Reddit has revealed it is sunsetting Reddit Talk. The company says the third-party audio vendor it relied on has shut down, making it too costly to keep the feature going.

Our original plan was to maintain Talk while we worked on this. Unfortunately, the 3rd party audio vendor we use for Talk is shutting down its service. In other words, the resources required to keep Talk live during this transition increased substantially.

We don’t have a timeline to bring Talk or an audio product back in the future, however we will share any updates when we have them.

  • Clubhouse Leaves Beta and Is Open to Everyone

Clubhouse Leaves Beta and Is Open to Everyone

Clubhouse, the popular audio-only social media platform, announced it is out of beta and no longer invitation-only.

Clubhouse has gained popularity as a platform for audio chatrooms and conversation, but has been invite-only for the last year. The company used those 12 months to fine-tune the experience, figuring out what works and what doesn’t.

“Twelve never-boring months later, we’re thrilled to share that Clubhouse is now out of beta, open to everyone, and ready to begin its next chapter,” reads the company’s blog. “This means we have removed our waitlist system so that anyone can join. If you have a club, you can post your link far and wide. If you are a creator with an audience, you can bring them all on. If you’re hosting a public event, anyone can attend. You can bring close friends, classmates, family members, coworkers, and anyone else you like — on iOS or Android.”

The news follows the company’s announcement it was adding a direct-message feature called Backchannel.

  • Facebook Spending $1 Billion on Content Creators Through 2022

Facebook Spending $1 Billion on Content Creators Through 2022

Facebook plans to pay content creators some $1 billion through 2022 in an effort to ward off rivals.

Facebook has been facing increased pressure from rivals, such as TikTok and Clubhouse, and is facing its slowest growth rate in company history. As a result, the company is increasingly looking at different ways to increase engagement and continue attracting content creators and users alike.

The latest endeavor, announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, involves paying out $1 billion through 2022.

“We want to build the best platforms for millions of creators to make a living, so we’re creating new programs to invest over $1 billion to reward creators for great content they create on Facebook and Instagram through 2022,” wrote Zuckerberg. “Investing in creators isn’t new for us, but I’m excited to expand this work over time. More details soon.”

It will be interesting to see if Facebook’s efforts yields results.

  • Slack Joins Chorus of Companies Wanting to Challenge Clubhouse

Slack Joins Chorus of Companies Wanting to Challenge Clubhouse

Slack is the latest company looking to cash in on Clubhouse’s popularity, with plans to include similar features in its own app.

Clubhouse is an audio-chat social media platform that is currently invite-only. The app has experienced a significant surge in popularity, with some of the biggest tech news debuting in Clubhouse chats.

Not surprisingly, major tech companies are wanting to capitalize on Clubhouse’s success by rolling out their own competing apps, or adding its functionality to their existing ones.

Slack appears to be headed for the latter option, according to CEO Stewart Butterfield, who broke the news in a Clubhouse chat, one that included Clubhouse CEO Paul Davison.

“I’ve always believed the ‘good artists copy, great artists steal’ thing, so we’re just building Clubhouse into Slack, essentially,” said Butterfield.

Needless to say, Butterfield being willing to challenge Clubhouse — while in a Clubhouse chat with the Clubhouse CEO — caught people’s attention.

The news also caught the attention of Bret Taylor, Salesforce CEO and Butterfield’s future boss once their merge goes through.

  • Elon Musk Stood Up Vladimir Putin in ClubHouse

Elon Musk Stood Up Vladimir Putin in ClubHouse

Not just anyone can stand up the Russian president, but that appears to be exactly what Elon Musk did.

Musk tweeted at the Kremlin’s official account in February, inviting Putin to join him for a chat on the invite-only Clubhouse social media app.

According to Bloomberg, it appears the Kremlin was at least interested in the possibility.

“It’s undoubtedly a very interesting offer, but we need to know what he means, what’s he’s proposing,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at the time, adding, “we’ll check it out first and then we’ll respond.”

It appears that Elon Musk never responded to the Kremlin’s follow-up attempts, ensuring a Clubhouse sit down never happened.

“Apparently there was some kind of misunderstanding,” said Peskov. “Most likely, this matter is exhausted.”

Musk has been known for some brash actions in the past, but standing up Vladimir Putin certainly ranks up there. Hopefully, the slight won’t impact Tesla’s business in Russia.

Elon Musk: BitCoin On the Verge of Widespread Acceptance

Elon Musk has said bitcoin is on the verge of achieving wide acceptance among investors and conventional finance people.

Tesla’s famous CEO has been on a roll in the last few weeks with his commentary on various companies, services and technology. His tweet about messaging app Signal helped drive unprecedented growth in the wake of WhatApp’s privacy mishap. A tweet about GameStop helped drive further investment in the stock. Musk recently added #bitcoin to his Twitter profile, leading to a 14% jump in bitcoin’s price, and has now predicted the cryptocurrency is on the verge of widespread acceptance.

“I am a supporter of bitcoin,” Musk said in his first discussion on Clubhouse, the invitation-only social media app, according to Business Insider.

“I think bitcoin is on the verge of getting broad acceptance by conventional finance people,” he added, while also admitting he should have invested in the currency eight years ago.

“I was a little slow on the uptake … I do think at this point that bitcoin is a good thing.”

Musk’s comments are the latest indication of the inroads bitcoin has been making, with even an NFL player’s salary being paid in part with the cryptocurrency.
