  • Jenna Coleman Was Surprised to Learn Clara Oswald’s Fate On “Doctor Who”

Jenna Coleman admits she was surprised to learn the fate of her character Clara Oswald, as she departed Doctor Who on Saturday night. In the episode titled “Face the Raven,” Coleman’s character met her demise.

“It was a surprise when I read the script,” Jenna Coleman says. “It did not go in the direction I thought it was going to. But it’s really cool and different, and good, I think. And sad.”

It was difficult for Jenna Coleman to film those final scenes. After all, she played Clara Oswald since 2012.

“I couldn’t stop crying after I filmed my final scenes–it was ridiculous to get emotional. I’d planned all these things I wanted to say but only got two words out,” she says.

Fans watched as Clara Oswald’s life was ended by a deadly raven known as a “Quantum Spirit,” which the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) explained to her is “a spirit bound to a victim, you could flee across all of time and all of the universe and it would still find you.”

Jenna Coleman’s character sealed her fate in a previous episode, whens she offered to take on the death sentence imposed upon her friend Rigsy. Nonetheless, Clara believed the combination of Ashildr’s and the Doctor’s powers would be enough to save her.

Did you catch Jenna Coleman in her final episode of Doctor Who on Saturday evening? Are you among those fans disappointed Coleman has left the show?

  • Clara Oswald Meets Her End In Shocking ‘Doctor Who’ Twist

Doctor Who fans were in for a shocker on Saturday when beloved character Clara Oswald died at the hands (or claws) of the Raven.

The episode, entitled “Face The Raven,” was the first installment of the show’s three-part finale, and kicks off with The Doctor and his precocious assistant Clara Oswald taking a call from Rigsy, a graffiti artist that Oswald had met in the previous season.

Rigsy tells Oswald about a strange number tattoo he found on his nape, which prompts her and The Doctor to visit him in London to investigate.

They soon find themselves on a strange street, which, apparently is part of a community governed by another familiar face – Ashildr – the young village girl whom Doctor Who saved from Vikings a few episodes back.

The young mayor tells Clara Oswald and The Doctor that Rigsy had murdered one of her alien locals and that the tattoo signifies his remaining time on Earth. An investigation is initiated by Doctor Who on the condition that no harm will come his assistant’s way.

“I guarantee the safety of Clara Oswald,” Ashildr promises.

It is soon discovered that Ashildr used Rigsy to trap The Doctor in the hopes of finally capturing him for his enemies to deal with. Unfortunately, Clara Oswald – in an effort to outsmart the sentence – takes Rigsy’s tattoo, thinking that he will live and that she will be spared as well per Ashildr’s promise.

Realizing that Clara Oswald will have to take the death penalty, Doctor Who threatens Ashildr complete destruction, but Oswald suddenly makes a crucial decision.

She owns up to the blunder and decides to take responsibility for it.

Her last words to her employer were “Whatever happens next, wherever she is sending you … don’t be a warrior. Promise me! Be a Doctor!” after which the black Raven kills her.

Actress Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald admitted feeling emotional about the fate of her character, even though it did not come as a complete surprise.

“I couldn’t stop crying after I filmed my final scenes – it was ridiculous to get emotional. I’d planned all these things I wanted to say but only got two words out.”

The episode garnered mixed reviews from fans, who thought that Clara Oswald’s death may have been too “gruesome” for its younger viewers.

However, lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat defended the creative choice by saying that death isn’t something that most children will be learning about for the first time through Doctor Who.

He added that kids find scary things appealing, much like they love Halloween and scary stories.

  • Clara Oswald: Jenna Coleman’s Character Exits “Doctor Who”

Twitter lit up before and after the departure, with a wide range of emotions from diehard Doctor Who fans.

Some fans shared multiple thoughts on the social media site.

    Then there was this:

One Doctor Who fan chose “Goodbye Clara” as her Twitter handle.

Some Clara Oswald fans begged to be killed so Clara Oswald could be spared. Really? This is a TV show–right?

A review of Saturday night’s episode reads, “And in light of that, you could argue that Clara’s death ultimately wasn’t about Clara at all, but rather about the Doctor and his reaction to it.”

What’s your take on that notion?

  • Jenna Coleman Confirms She’s Left ‘Doctor Who,’ Signs on to Portray Queen Victoria

Jenna Coleman confirmed to BBC Radio on Friday that he has, in fact, left her Doctor Who role behind, following rumors from earlier in the week that said pretty much the same thing.

“I have left the Tardis–it’s happened,” she said. “I’ve filmed my last scenes.”

So when exactly will fans bid adieux to Jenna Coleman’s character, Clara Oswald, behind?

Coleman played coy that that question, revealing only that it will be “at some point this season.”

Don’t think for a moment that Jenna Coleman will sit idol now that her time on Doctor Who is through. She has already signed on to play a young Queen Victoria in an upcoming drama series called Victoria.

Saying she is “delighted” to be playing Queen Victoria during the time when she was both courting and married to Prince Albert, Jenna Coleman calls the new drama “ambitious.”

“She is a vivid, strong, inspirational and utterly fascinating woman in British history and I can’t wait to tell her story,” she says of her character.

Despite her new endeavors, it wasn’t easy leaving Doctor Who. Jenna Coleman dished about her last scenes as Clara Oswald with current Doctor Peter Capaldi.

“It’s been in the works for a very long time,” she said, “[Writer] Steven [Moffat] and I sat down a year and a half ago and tried to work out the best place to do it and tell a really good story,” she says.

“We’re not going to give any details but it will happen at some point this season. We worked out a really good story arc out so hopefully people will love it,” Coleman adds.

Filming starts soon for Victoria, but there’s one thing Jenna Coleman needed to perfect before she begins playing her new role.

“I needed to learn to waltz,” Coleman said of the role on Radio 1, “It’s really fun, it’s like bootcamp.”

  • Jenna Coleman Confirms She’s Staying on ‘Doctor Who

Jenna Coleman has no doubt given Doctor Who fans the best holiday gift of all. She confirmed just days ago that she planned to stay on through season 9, portraying the immensely popular Clara Oswald. Fans had likely been biting their nails ever since Jenna let on that she was unsure as to whether or not she would return.

“It’s wonderful,” she said during an interview with the New York Daily News. “I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor and I couldn’t walk away with the story being unresolved. There is so much more to do. I think they’ve finally just reached a point where they really understand each other.”

Coleman seemed especially excited to be once again teamed with the Twelfth Doctor, who is played by Peter Capaldi.

“It’s wonderful. I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor and I couldn’t walk away with the story being unresolved,” she said. “There is so much more to do. I think they’ve finally just reached a point where they really understand each other.”

Clara was first paired with the Eleventh Doctor, who was played by Matt Smith. With Capaldi now playing the iconic character, Coleman said that she has enjoyed the experience of ‘depicting the duo’s evolving relationship.’

“The arrival of the Twelfth Doctor has just kind of dropped this whole bombshell and allowed the dynamic to totally change,” Jenna said. “So I think just when Clara was feeling more comfortable in the relationship, it has suddenly thrown something new up.”

What does the Doctor think about Jenna Coleman sticking around for at least another season?

“I’m thrilled,” Capaldi said. “Jenna has just been fantastic and such a pleasure to work with.”
