Verizon 5G Roll Out Marches On, Hits 34 Cities

Verizon has now hit 34 cities with its 5G roll out, adding Cincinnati, Little Rock and Kansas City, according to a company press release.

Verizon made headlines at the end of last year for meeting, and surpassing, its goal of rolling out 5G in 30 cities by year end. By the end of 2019, it had reached 31 cities. In the first month of 2020, the company has now hit 34.

Because Verizon is focusing on high-band, mmWave 5G, the new service does not cover all areas of the cities. While mmWave is the fastest flavor of 5G, with speeds measured in gigabits, it has very limited range and building penetration. As a result, only parts of the new cities have coverage.

Cincinnati’s coverage is “concentrated in parts of Downtown, Mt. Adams, West End, Evanston, Walnut Hills, Corryville, Clifton, Price Hill, Over-The-Rhine, Mt Auburn, Avondale, Newport (KY), Dayton (KY), Bellevue (KY) near landmarks such as: Great American Ballpark, Duke Energy Convention Center, Serpentine Wall, City Hall, Xavier University, Cincinnati Zoo, Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati Christian University and Newport Waterfront (KY).”

In Kansas City, service is based “in parts of Downtown, Midtown-Westport, Plaza Midtown, Olathe and near landmarks such as: The Garment District, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Rockhurst University as well as inside and around the professional football stadium.”

In Little Rock, service is “concentrated in parts of Midtown, University District, Birchwood, Otter Creek and near landmarks such as: UAMS College of Medicine, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Rock Creek Square Plaza Shopping Center, and Outlets of Little Rock.”

Once customers move outside of 5G range, their devices will automatically transition back to 4G LTE. Even with the geographically-limited rollout, however, Verizon’s 5G will bring a welcome performance boost to customers, as well as help ease the strain on their 4G network in heavily populated areas.

  • Substitute Teacher Fired Over Nigerian Lottery Scam

WCPO in Cincinnati reports that a substitute teacher is out of work and barred from being able to teach in the area. Students had reported that the man was asking students for money, saying he was involved in a Nigerian Lottery scam.

The whole thing started when Jay Deutsch was called to sub at Fairfield Middle School. He reported for work and set about teaching the material on The Crusades. But he varied from the lesson plan that had been left for him, which prompted an Advanced Placement student to complain to another teacher. That teacher listened in on more of the class, then reported what she had heard to school officials. Based on that report, officials escorted Mr. Deutsch out of the school and asked the agency that had provided him to never assign him there again.

A clue about what that second teacher may have heard came days later when students began to tell their parents about the oddball sub teacher. One alleged that he had told a female student that she was “beautiful”, in a way that creeped her out.

But some students said that Deutsch had asked them for money, saying that he was involved in a Nigerian Lottery.

In a typical Nigerian Lottery scam, someone is contacted with information that they have won the Nigerian Lottery, a lottery they have in all likelihood never entered. In order to be able to claim their exorbitant winnings, they need only provide a “processing fee”, anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

Very few people fall for such schemes anymore, but apparently some do, and end up losing their money.

Deutsch says he did not mention anything about a Nigerian Lottery to students. He says that he will not fight his ban from teaching in the area, though.

  • Ken Griffey Jr. Apologizes for Awkward ESPN Inteview

Ken Griffey Jr.’s interview with Linda Cohn on ESPN’s SportsCenter was awkward to the point of being difficult to watch. Now Griffey wants Cohn and her viewers to know he’s sorry for how the interview went.

Griffey gave a series of interviews on Wednesday in connection with Upper Deck’s month-long 25th anniversary celebration.

Everyone wanted to know Griffey’s thoughts on his 1989 rookie card.

He spoke with ESPN’s Mint Condition, USA today’s Ted Berg, and made an appearance on the Golf Channel.

But it was Griffey’s SportsCenter interview that earned the description of cringe-worthy, horrific, the most uncomfortable interview you will ever see.

Griffey was sullen and for the most part unsmiling during his interview with Cohn. The veteran SportsCenter anchor had to work hard to keep the interview moving forward in the face of Griffey’s somber, often one-word responses to her questions.

Cohn kept up her smile and gracious demeanor during the interview, but showed her true feelings on Twitter after the interview.

Griffey posted an apology on Instagram: “I want to apologize to Linda for the way things went today. I was in the middle of a cough attack and felt a little ill and didn’t want to walk off the set. Linda has always been professional to me and my family . I’m sorry, Junior @espn @sportcenter @lindacohn.”

Griffey is a 13-time All-Star who spent most of his 22-year Major League Baseball career with the Seattle Mariners and the Cincinnati Reds. His record includes 630 home runs, the sixth most in MLB history. Griffey retired abruptly in 2010. In 2013 he was inducted into the Mariners’ Hall of Fame and currently serves as “Special Consultant to the Franchise.”

  • Cincinnati Gunman Scares University of Cincinnati Campus

As a college student, this writer can attest to how scary it is to hear about shootings on college campuses and face the reality that such threats could become a reality at nearly any point. Those fears also surfaced for students, faculty, and staff at the University of Cincinnati when reports of a person with a gun were called in on Short Vine, a street near the campus. The campus police sent out an alert, telling people to stay out of the area, and began a search for the mysterious gunman.

The campus police began their search for the gunman, but never issued an official lockdown, though they did encourage students to stay where they were and to avoid the reported area. The police searched the buildings and area around where the gunman had been sighted, and found nothing, so they issued an “all clear” alert, telling students it was safe to move about. The police reported that the suspect, described as a fifteen-year-old black male, ran into a neighborhood across the street shortly after being spotted.

Though no campus-wide lockdown was issued, certain buildings were locked down as the search was conducted. The police focused on Proctor Hall, a building that was not technically on campus, and surrounding areas to ensure that there was no threat after the gunman fled. The campus police officially reported that no gunman had been found, no shots had been fired, and no injuries or deaths had occurred in the process.

There has been no statement issued concerning whether or not the suspect will be pursued or kept on lookout for. The story ends on a happy note, however, that there were no injuries or deaths as a result of the scare, and everyone present was able to walk away from the scare with nothing more than a frightening story to recount to their friends, family, and loved ones back home.

  • Ben Roethlisberger Struggling This Season

Steelers heartbreak happened for the second time this season when the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers with a final score of Steelers 21 and Bengals 23. The dismal season to-date for Ben Roethlisberger becomes obvious when considering his plays thus far, which include having passed only 442 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the total of the two games. That’s an average of one-for-one with only two games into the season.

When battling the Bengals in the second game of the season for the Steelers, Roethlisberger passed 251 yards and made one touchdown. Fans should not be too disheartened with Roethlisberger’s performance just yet since he has the reputation for putting on the heat when the pressure rises. The video recap of the Steelers and Bengals showdown on Monday night proves how close the two teams competed for the win.

Though only two games into the season, fans have started voicing concerns that Ben Roethlisberger is being viewed as a caricature of himself where his skills and hype are disproportionate to the observable performances and expectations placed upon his broad shoulders. However, the season is just starting and the famous quarterback still has time to prove himself before being subjected to another potential discarding. Whether the Steelers will redeem themselves this season is anyone’s guess; however, in the meantime people are all too happy to comment on the potential outcomes for the season.

  • Vanessa Lachey Tweets about Son’s 1st Birthday

Vanessa and husband, Nick Lachey, welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world on September 12, 2012, Camden Lachey. This past weekend they celebrated the first year of his life in the best way possible: attending a Cincinnati Reds game.

All three wore matching outfits, blue jeans and matching jerseys. Vanessa says that Camden loves the water and probably would have enjoyed a pool party, but she said that he has his whole life for pool parties and that this celebration was for the parents.

“Camden loves to dance, he loves music,” Lachey said. “He loves the water — the pool, swimming, the beach — to the point that when we give him water and try to sign ‘Drink, drink,’ he literally puts his face in the cup and starts [acting] like he wants to go swimming. But I won’t do a pool party for his first birthday, because I feel like we have the rest of his life to do pool parties. He’s 1. This one’s for Mom and Dad.”

Venessa kept all the fans and family updated via Twitter on all the excitement of the birthday celebration.

Vanessa adds that her one year old has already developed a personality of his own and adores his daddy.

“I think Cam just loves anything that Nick does — he’s such a little Daddy’s boy, it’s adorable,” she says. “Overall, we’re just constantly talking to him and singing to him … anything to interact with the little munchkin.”

Vanessa wasn’t the only one that took to Twitter about Camden’s first birthday. Nick also tweeted calling Camden “the most amazing little boy”.

  • Lung Cancer Research Could Get Boost From New Stem Cell Findings

New research conducted at the University of Cincinnati (UC) Cancer Institute suggests that lung cancer stem cells can be successfully isolated and grown in a preclinical model. Such a process could provide a new method for investigating immunotherapy treatment options that target lung cancer stem cells.

“Increasing evidence supports the idea that cancerous tumors have a population of stem cells, also called cancer-initiating cells, that continually regenerate and fuel cancer growth,” explains Dr. John Morris, lead author of the study and professor at the UC College of Medicine. “These cancer stem cells may also have the highest potential to spread to other organs.”

The researchers stated that current research models provide limited information in the interaction between cancer stem cells and the immune system. They claim this makes it “virtually impossible” to study therapies that utilize the body’s immune system to fight off cancer.

The new study, published this week in PLOS One, successfully isolated lung cancer stem cells that can be used in a mouse model with full immune system function. The researchers used a “tumorsphere” assay test to accomplish this feat, allowing them to enrich their samples to isolate cancer stem cells.

The research team now hopes to develop more effective therapies that target cancer stem cells by showing how those cells escape the body’s immune system.

“One of the hypotheses behind why cancer therapies fail is that the drug only kills cells deemed to be ‘bad’ (because of certain molecular characteristics), but leaves behind stem cells to repopulate the tumor,” said Morris. “Stem cells are not frequently dividing, so they are much less sensitive to existing chemotherapies used to eliminate cells deemed abnormal.

“Studying these unique cells could greatly improve our understanding of lung cancer’s origins and lead to the novel therapeutics targeting these cells and help to more effectively eradicate this disease. Immunotherapy is the future of cancer treatment. We are hopeful that this new method will accelerate our investigation of immunotherapies to specifically target cancer stem cells.”

  • Sarah Jessica Parker Hits Home State For Obama

Sarah Jessica Parker hasn’t kept it a secret that she is a fan of President Obama’s; in June, she held a fundraiser for his campaign at her home and starred in an ad talking him up which aired on MTV. In her latest effort to spread the word about Obama to her fellow female voters, she hit up her home state of Ohio recently along with actress Alfre Woodward and Democratic strategist Valerie Jarrett.

“The things that I feel are most important to women and to children, the things that have made an enormous difference these past four years, and the possibility for even more important, vital and necessary change, is going to come from the Obama administration,” she said.

Indeed, Obama has been enormously popular among women voters this time around because of his stance on healthcare–including birth control–and the fact that he believes the government shouldn’t have a say in what women do with their own bodies. Winning the key state of Ohio could mean winning the election, as both parties are fully aware, and with celebrity endorsements on his side, Obama’s approval rating in the state could be just the boost he needs.

Valerie Jarrett, who is chair of the White House Council of Women and Girls, says the election is particularly important for females this year.

“If you think about the president and what he’s fought for his entire life, it’s really all about equality, and opportunity — building a middle class that’s meant to last, and women are an important part of that,” she said.
