  • Starving Children Found in CA, One Chained To Wall

Officials say this is one of the worst cases of child abuse and neglect they have had to witness.

An eight-year-old girl, who officials described as skeletal thin, was found chained to the wall, looking as if she’d barely eaten in months.

Monterey County Sheriff Scott Miller has been in law enforcement for 30 years, but “this is one of those cases that sticks with you for some time,” he said.

“When you’ve got over 30 years in the business you’ve seen way too many of these types of things before,” he said. “But this is, in terms of child abuse and neglect, this is towards the top.”

The two responsible, Eraca Dawn Craig, 31, and Christian Jessica Deanda, 44, domestic partners, were arrested on counts of felony child related charges that include false imprisonment, child endangerment, severe neglect, and abuse. The children — two boys, ages 3 and 5, and an 8-year-old girl were immediately removed from the home and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Craig and Deanda were arrested on March 15. The charges were announced nearly a week later following further investigation, Miller said in a Friday afternoon news conference.

The children were rescued after investigators were tipped off by a caseworker after several appointments were missed, Miller said. He wouldn’t comment on the specifics of the missed appointments but did say the two elder children were home-schooled and therefore not missed at an area school.

“They had concerns as to the welfare of the children,” he said. “They had concerns because of past history.”

Miller wouldn’t comment on whether either woman has a criminal background.

Investigators discovered at the home on Russell Road just outside Salinas city limits, what could only be described as a grisly scene.

“The conditions are reported as squalid,” he said. “There was very little food in the residence. There’s also concern the little girl the 8-year-old was from time to time chained to the wall of the residence and was denied food.”

What was most disturbing was the discovery of twin heavy chains hung suspended from the wall 4 feet off the ground. At the end of the chains, investigators found a collar said to be used to wrap around the little girl’s neck or leg to keep her from seeking out food.

“She was extremely emaciated,” Miller said. “She’s been described as someone who looks like someone who’d been in a concentration camp.”

  • 2nd Prayer Death: Did Parents’ Beliefs Kill Toddler?

It’s hard to pinpoint the most tragic aspect of the death of an 8 month old child. However, without a doubt, the most frustrating parts of this senseless loss is that it is in fact the second child of a Pennsylvania couple to die.

Herbert and Catherine Schaible have been down this road before.

The couple defied a court order to get medical treatment for their children following the death of their two-year-old son, Kent. Now they are being jailed for the death of a second, even younger child.

44-year-old Catherine Schaible told the judge that, “My religious beliefs are that you should pray, and not have to use medicine.”

Her 45-year-old husband told the judge, “We believe in divine healing, that Jesus shed blood for our healing and that he died on the cross to break the devil’s power.”

The decision of the couple to once again forego medical treatment resulted in the loss of their infant child Brandon to pneumonia.

Despite the couple’s lawyer claiming that the court order clashed with their fundamental beliefs, Judge Benjamin Lerner was not interested.

“April of 2013 wasn’t Brandon’s time to die,” said Lerner. “You’ve killed two of your children. Not God. Not your church. Not religious devotion. You.”

The couple was sentenced to 3.5 to 7 years for the death of the child, a punishment some may not see as quite harsh enough given the fact that this is the second of the couple’s children to die from purposeful refusal of medical attention.

Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore said that the second death was a “foreseeable” tragedy.

“This was going to happen,” said Pescatore. She agreed with the couple’s public defender Mythri Jayaraman that the couple’s beliefs were such that it was likely the remaining children were in danger. That feeling would prove to be correct a few years later.

Pescatore said of the cases that, “Everybody in the system failed these children.”

Is this a matter of the legal system encroaching on “Freedom of Religion” or is this yet another bizarre case of parents killing their kids and blaming their irresponsible actions on religion?

  • World’s Most Distracted Driver is Arrested on 405 Freeway

Shawndeeia Bowen, 29, of Hawthorne, was arrested for child endangerment at about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The mother of six has a lot of people talking after driving on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles while texting with her one-year-old daughter sitting on her lap.

To make matters worse, she was driving with a suspended license and two more children in the back seat were not safely strapped into the vehicle. Her 2-year-old was in a safety seat, but it was not fastened with a seat belt and her 4-year-old was not wearing a seat belt.

Her baby girl is simply adorable.

Bowen also has nine traffic citations for similar offenses and is being held on $130,000 bail. She says that she put her child in the front seat because the infant was crying and needed to be comforted.

On her Facebook page she has posted several pictures of her kids and other assets that may or may not belong to her:

We can all spout hate at this mother and continue to make fun of her, or we can help her get back on her feet and help her become a safer driver, more protective mother, and a more effective citizen.

Hopefully Ms. Bowen will adhere to safety regulations in the future. If she ever gets her license back.
