  • Chelsea: Three Members Of Football Club Hit With Misconduct Charges

The Chelsea Football Club is one of the oldest and most revered teams in all of England. Over the years, the club has seen massive success and is still the only British club to have ever won all three main UEFA club competitions. Now the team has found itself in some hot water thanks to the conduct of its management.

The English Football Association announced on Wednesday that it has filed charges against a player and two managers on the Chelsea Football Club. Chelsea midfielder Ramires, assistant manager Rui Faria and manager Jose Mourinho were all called out due to conduct observed during the team’s match against the Sunderland Association Football Club on Saturday.

First up, the UEFA says that it has charted Ramires with violent conduct following a video that appeared after the game showing Ramires striking Sunderland’s Sebastian Larsson. Since the incident was not caught during the game, the UEFA had to assemble a three-man panel of former referees to determine if his actions were indeed violent. The panel affirmed unanimously that Ramires’ actions were violent and now he has until 6 p.m. Thursday to respond to the charge.

While Ramires’ actions weren’t caught until after the game, the team’s management was caught red handed while the game was still in session. Faria has been charged with two counts of misconduct following his alleged use of “abusive and/or insulting words” towards the Fourth Official during the game. Faria was then asked to leave the technical area and his actions upon being asked to leave amounted to another charge of misconduct. Faria has until 6 p.m. April 28 to respond to the charges.

For those curious, the moment when Faria gets thrown out of the game has been caught on video:

Finally, Mourinho has been charged with one count of misconduct following comments he allegedly made about the game officials after the match was over. After losing the game against Sunderland, it’s alleged that Mourinho called the referee’s integrity into question.

Here’s the interview in which Mourinho made the sarcastic comments about the referee:

Even the team’s Twitter account was sour about the call that cost them the game:

So, what could have caused this sudden outbreak of misconduct charges against the Chelsea Football Club’s management? Well, one possible theory is that its loss against Sunderland was the first home loss after 77 home wins against them. It’s more likely, however, that the team responded similarly to how most teams respond to what they perceive as a bad call – poorly.

Finally, here are all the highlights from Saturday’s game:

  • Champions League Results: Semifinals Set

With the conclusion of two more quarterfinal matches on Wednesday, the semifinals are set for the 2014 Champions League. And, for the first time since 2007, four-time champions Barcelona find themselves on the outside-looking-in.

Barcelona lost its quarterfinal match Wednesday to La Liga leader Atletico Madrid, 1-0, resulting in a cumulative 2-1 aggregate loss. Unfortunately for Messi and company, Atletico’s dominance over Barcelona has been consistent all season, with Atletico holding Barca scoreless for three of their five matches. Even more impressive is the fact that Atletico has held Messi, who is averaging over one goal per game, scoreless in all five contests.

With its advance to the semifinals, Atletico Madrid has its best opportunity to win the Champions League since it finished as a runner-up in 1974.

Those chances seemingly become even greater if they meet reining Champions League champions Bayern Munich in the semifinals, a team which struggled against the defensive pressure exhibited by the flailing Manchester United F.C. in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Bayern Munich came into the Champions League as the heavy favorite, having won the Bundesliga title just weeks ago and having lost its first contest in 54 league games this past Saturday.

Wednesday’s match-up against Manchester United on Wednesday, though, had pressure that Bayern is not used to playing under. Having played Bayern to a draw in their first contest, all Manchester had to do to advance to the Champions League semifinals was outscore Bayern by one to win the aggregate.

By the 57th minute of Wednesday’s contest, luck seemed to be shining on United as Patrice Evra buried a shot in the top-right corner of the net to put Manchester up 1-0.

Seeing its dominant year flash before its eyes, Bayern Munich decided to up its game in the final 33 minutes, scoring 3 goals and defeating Manchester United by an aggregate of 4-2.

While this was the expected result for Bayern Munich, it was the end of a very disappointed season for Manchester United. The team currently sits in seventh place in the Premiere League, a league which it won by 11 points last year. With the loss against Bayern Munich, Manchester United is assured they will not see Champions League play again for another 17 months, missing the cut for qualification for the 2014-15 season.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo Hugs Man Who Rushed Onto Pitch

In this post-9/11 world in which we live it is nearly impossible to walk into any major event without having to deal with endless security checks. That fact is what makes what happened Wednesday night in Miami that much more interesting.

During the final of the Guinness International Champions Cup at Sun Life Stadium between Real Madrid and Chelsea superstar Cristiano Ronaldo got a little more love than usual from his adoring fans. In the 67th minute a man rushed onto the pitch and managed to get a hug from the young star.

Moments like that can be terrifying. It is impossible to tell when someone just wants to meet their idol up close and personal and when their intentions are a little more nefarious. John Lennon and Latina pop sensation Selena both had their lives ended by troubled fans, and no young athlete wants to be cut down at the height of their powers. With that in mind, Ronaldo showed great poise and understanding to the excited fan, even returning his hug and helping him off of the pitch with the help of security officials.

There are a few questions about how and why the man did what he did, such as how he bypassed security, what he said to Ronaldo, and what the player possibly said back. In spite of all that, it is a night that neither Ronaldo nor the fan will forget anytime soon, especially since the fan was surely locked up for at least the night and will face fines.

I have a feeling that he would say that it was worth it.
